At the end of last week, I installed the new 4.4 Google apps, including the new Hangouts, on my CM10.2 nightly-equipped N4. Voice+ was enabled, and integration continued to work just fine. This meant that I now had everything (SMS, GVoice, and Hangouts) routing through one application. It was a pretty ideal solution for me.
Being impatient, I have since moved to the 4.4 roms that are floating around. I wanted to see if it would be possible to bring Voice+ into one of these roms since Google is in no rush to give us complete integration. I was surprised when my search for information on this issue yielded very little information. Am I missing it? Is this not as widespread of an issue as I might have expected?
Has anyone come up with a good way to integrate everything now that Hangouts and SMS have been officially integrated?
I'm not sure if any other roms have pulled Voice+ from CM yet. But also, I don't know if anyone has done much with 4.4 other than get it running yet.
However, the CM team posted this on Google+: https://plus.google.com/117962666888533781522/posts/gFjZS7NcTNr
basically it says they're starting to work with 4.4, and it appears most of their mods are functioning and not causing any problems building.
So hopefully it won't be too long before we start seeing test builds of CM 11.
edit: I will also mention that I'm anxiously awaiting Hangouts getting all of the Google Voice features. I use Google Voice for everything, and SMS, calling, and hopefully VOIP (like in iOS) in Hangouts would be fantastic!

Thanks for that link. I hope we see some builds popping out relatively soon.
I too use Voice for everything. No one even has my (currently) T-Mobile number. I've had carriers in multiple continents, and it's been great always having one number that works no matter where I'm living at the time. I will be very pleased when full native integration is introduced.

Do you still get voicemail notifications through Google Voice on your phone? When I did this on my D2VZW, Google Voice Texts integrated with Hangouts via voice+, but when I got a voicemail it would ping and then disappear, so I only saw it if I happened to open the Google Voice app (which I wasn't doing often since Hangouts handled messaging).

Actually, no. I hadn't even thought about it, but I missed a call yesterday, and I had no voicemail notification. Thanks for pointing that out.
I have Voice+ installed on my Nexus 5, but when I send a text through Hangouts it still uses my phone number, not my GV number. Did I miss a setting or something?

I thought Voice+ was only available through CyanogenMod. Has CM built for the Nexus 5 already? Or do you mean the Voice App by Google?

There is an app in the Play Store that installs the CM software onto other roms. I tried it with AOSP 4.4 on my N4, but Voice+ wouldn't work. I'm still waiting for my N5 to arrive. There is an unofficial CM11 being built for the N5, but I don't want what all is included or functioning at this point.

i am hurting so badly right now at the concept of not being able to get google voice on this.
UNBELIEVABLE..this is just horrible. And i trully believe they wont make a native app for it..like a tablet version as verizon has said this is not capable of text messages.
UPDATE: EVERYONE i created a official google forum request for this amazing app to be used. PLEASE JOIN and voice you opinion on it being needed, WE WILL GET AN ANSWER!!!
thread with google forum is here! Cheers!

Set the texts to go to email. You can respond via email as well.
I still cannot convert completely to Google Voice as you cannot get picture messages.
Yea you can get your texts, but where do your friends send you a pic to?

heres the thing, i ported my number, saved a boat load of money, managed to have all my friends send me pictures through gmail. its more conveneint anyways.
all in all google voice is amanzing and i heavily use it, if you read up on all it can do (and ..its ALOT)
i refuse to believe this is happening and google cant utilize its tablet market..it would be suuuuch a win. also i do believe mms will happen eventually as this is the last year that their service is considered...free...so hmmm
jesus i need a xoom google voice app, and a crack rock
Have you tried side loading the Google voice app? If so does it just FC when you try to open it?

Yes and yes. No worky.
i tried going off my app purchas history doesnt work
You could always do the e-mail thing, and create a new gmail specifically for the texts. IE. [email protected] or w/e, then you can have pictures sent there, and you can use the gmail widget basically as a text app, since you're e-mailing you're texts back you should be able to send mms right through the e-mail, then you really don't have to worry about having a voice app, and got a cool widget for your texts.
I might do that now that i think about it.
I am mad about the lack of Xoom support also, but where theirs a will, there is a way.
raddude, smart move but i dont think i have the stomach for another email addy. im so in tune with texting via computer off my google voice and how smooth it is from there to my nexus. i want to say i believe in google and see some how..some way..a jump over verizon's limitations on this but i dont know
Your world sure comes crashing down around you a lot. You should get some medication.

Ok, so I'm a little confused by this post. Is there some indication out that there there will NEVER be a google voice app for tablets/xoom? If so, where is the documentation supporting this?
I assume (and maybe incorrectly) that a google voice app on the xoom is just a matter of time (like flash and enabling the SD slot), not any direct statement made by google.
Does anyone have any concrete information of either scenario?

I don't believe so. I think people are just "OMG PANIC!" because not everything is exactly how they want it on a release day.
Patience truly is a virtue.
Just to add idle speculation into the fire, i am almost positive that we will get the iPad treatment vis a vis Google Voice. Meaning they need to get a version of the app going for android that does not integrate with a dialer.
I would love to have a voip option or something, but VZ and all US Carriers do not want us to use our devices as phones, they want us to have 2 lines with them! Galaxy Tab, which in the rest of the world is effectively a giant Galaxy S with dialer, etc, on all US carriers has had its calling disabled (of course since its froyo it was easy for at least the tmo ones to get the feature back).
This is not a Google issue, but rather one of the carriers not wanting us to not pay them for our minutes.
I think some folks might also be getting confused with the following Verizon statements quoting Verizon as saying the receiving or sending of SMS or MMS won't be supported by Verizon on this device.
I just interpret that as meaning that Verizon will not let the device natively receive and send SMS/MMS like a regular cell phone or provide phone apps to do this. Because GV does SMS/MMS via data and not through the normal SMS/MMS mechanism I would assume that Verizon's statement doesn't exclude the potential for GV on the device at all...

Except Skype works on 3g and Wifi on the xoom
So, I've been trying to get SMS working through google voice on my NC, with the latest nightly of CM7 running.
I got the latest "working" google voice I could find linked here on the forums. Got it setup and was able to get the voicemails on my account...
My issue though, is that I can't for the life of me get texting to work. Most of the threads I find on here about it are mostly people saying "It just worked for me." ...unfortunately, that doesn't really help if it didn't "just work".
Anyone have any tips on how to get it working, if it doesn't out of the box?
try DESKSMS

I Use DeskSMS for all my texting, its by far the best. It can link up through several accounts, and i use Trillian as my client, but you can use any client.(which i got free from Amazon free app day a while ago)....its still apparently in Beta, and i think its almost finished. Ive had it from the very beginning. Its FREE right now on the market, until they release the final version. Hope this helps...at least with the texting its flawless!
Bobby
Thanks for the info.
DeskSMS looks like it links up to itself running on your phone. I'm not really looking for something like that (phone's old school and not a droid) since it's not really a viable option.
I see people talking about how they are using Gvoice to send texts. Which is what I'm trying to get working, but it just absolutely refuses to. Like I was saying, I can access voicemails through the gvoice app. When I try to send a message in the messaging app, all I get is a "Service is unavailable" message.
I use the latest version in the market and have never had a problem with it.
This right here is your problem:

You need to use the Google Voice app to send the SMS messages, not the native Android App.
Thanks dormido.
I actually just saw something about that while I was browsing around between the last post and yours.
The posting I had found said something about hitting "t" to bring up the texting window. I haven't gotten the keyboard up in the GV app yet, but I guess I'll have to look at it a little more since I have confirmation that's how it's done now.
Thanks
Actually....
I figured this out now.
Apparently, since I've had the same google voice number since it was closed beta (and haven't really used it since). It didn't have all the features enabled anymore. The site was missing the voicemail and text widgets as well. Changed to a new Gvoice number in settings, and it all works fine now.
I feel like an idiot for it being such a basic fix.
Just found out that GV does not do MMS AND does not decode emoji (receiving and sending)
After using it for a YEAR!
My girlfriend has been sending me mms pictures with her iPhone (yeah we've all been there having a girlfriend with an iPhone is quite the pain)
but i have not been able to receive any of them. (yes I really want those naked pictures haha )
On top of that, GVoice also does not decode emoji's or send them out (yep you guessed why i need it for)
When i receive emoji texts, it shows up as "" on browser and it shows up as ? ? ? on the phone.
I just switched to the Nexus 4, Jelly Bean 4.2.1. So I am not satisfied when I have such a superior phone but unable to do simple functions like that.
Been toying around the whole day trying to get emoji to work, only to find out that if I was texted to my regular number, everything works fine, but if I was texted in GVoice number, the emojis disappear.
Does anyone have a workaround?
If possible, I don't want to switch to my regular number.
That's not really a nexus 4 issue, but more of the googlevoice application itself. I actually have been able to receive some mms (it sends it as an attachment to my gmail). Also I've had certain emoji and foreign characters work for me, which didn't work a few months ago. I can only guess googlevoice will slowly implement more features into their app.
I have v.4.2.54 of googlevoice if that helps. :fingers-crossed:
it never has done either of these. For the MMS part I don't think they have ever announced support

I realized it isn't a Nexus 4 issue, but I did mention that I have a superior phone which is Nexus 4 and not being able to do simple tasks such as this is unacceptable!
I've also had certain emojis appear but with Jelly Bean 4.2.1, emoji should be fully supported by now.
As for mms, I read that if Sprint users(or if you're a Sprint user yourself) send you mms through GVoice, it will forward it to your email. Which is the smart thing to do and it SHOULD be that way.
Other cases I've heard happening are random hit and miss results from other carriers.
I'm using v 0.4.2.72
Ohh, I actually didn't know mms from only Sprint users work. But now it makes sense why I am only able to get it from certain people, so thanks for the info!
In the past I've tried setting texts to auto forward to gmail and tested out mms during that time and it didn't work. I haven't tried recently though. Until Google officially supports it, I just use other alternatives for mms like whatsapp :/.

As mentioned, regardless of your phone being "superior," The limitations of MMS through Google Voice is not Because of the phone, but due to the limitations placed on Google Voice. Google Voice being a free service (for now at least) there is not reason for Google to use the extra server space to hold Picture data until you choose to download it. Just as your normal carrier, picture/data attached to MMS are stored on thier servers until you retrieve it (open the MMS and download).. There might be a possibility that MMS comes to Google Voice, but more than likely to only paid users. So until then, if you want those "naked pictures" you can either take them yourself, or have her email them.
As for your Emoji.. They are supported in Jelly Bean, you just have to enable them...
Settings>Language & Input> Check the box next to iWinn IME (Emoji Input)
Then when you click on a Input Box, in your notification bar and Keyboard Icon will appear. Open the Notifcation bar, click the "Choose input method" and Select Emoji Input.
If that is to many steps for you, then you can open Settings>Language & Input>Android keyboard settings>Add-on dictionaries.
Then install the "Emoji for English words" dictionary.
Then when you are typing you will get the option to insert a Emoji from the Auto-corrent bar.
Type "Smile" and a Smiley Face ☺ will appear
Type "Star" and a Star ★ will appear
More Emoji options: http://pastebin.com/UhsFze0u
Note: Note all phones will support these, so don't be surprised if you send a emoji to someone and they are wtf is that suppose to be because they see "3wsdfsa3" instead of the emoji. And IMO Emoji are childish, just type wtf you want to say instead of using a picture to do it. Guess it would make since if you were texting a 2 yr old that could only read picture books
@UberSlackr
I understand G Voice isn't a paid service and this doesn't do MMS by itself. But they could've done what they offering to Sprint users now which is by emailing you the photo to your gmail.
As for emoji, I know how to and already have enabled it in JB (as described in my earlier post) My problem is that G Voice does not decode emoji when I receive them and it doesn't show when I send them out.
The main reason I use G Voice is the convenience of logging all my texts and occasionally when flashing a new ROM goes wrong, I can still send texts through web browser.

1. No where in this thread do you mention enabling Emoji support.
2. You continue (through out the whole thread) to blame the lack of Emoji & MMS on the Nexus 4 or Jelly Bean.
Your problem is with Google Voice, in all cases. So you better off posting a thread in the Google Support Forums and not the Nexus 4 of XDA3. Google has an Agreement with Sprint to allow MMS. This is due to being able to "port" your Sprint number to Google Voice, their for there has to be a way to have MMS since Google Voice becomes the Primary number/feature.
4. iPhone has the ability to send image to email (attachments) through the email app. Have her send it directly to your email.
I understand your need/want to use Google Voice. I also use Google Voice, so that I can text from the same number on my N7 as well as my N4. But you will have to find alternative methods of achieving your MMS / Emoji needs.
Don't Flash so many ROMS and you wont risk loosing Messages or need to text from the computer.
Have MMS sent to the Primary number of the phone, then back up the pictures to google drive.
Install a SMS/MMS Backup app, and run it before flashing a new ROM. Then restore the backup.
As for an Alternative to Emoji in GoogleVoice, I can not think of any, and I'm pretty sure this is not even a concern of googles to implement into the service. Thankfully

The google voice app does not decode emoji, but the service does support it. If you change the settings in the app to receive the messages in the messaging app instead of the google voice app emoji will work. To change the setting in the google voice app go to Menu>Settings>Sync and notifications>Receive text messages(then select via the messaging app)
Edit: It seems like some enojis work but others don't
I've been a long time user of GVoice and actually just recently found out or never cared that it has the option to receive texts. I have tried numerous times and can not get it to work. I've changed to receive text messages via GVoice but it has never worked for me. Am I missing something?

Sorry to bump an old thread but just to let people know the latest version of my app Send It Pro now integrates Google Voice support meaning you can now send any file on your Nexus 4 (just got mine and loving it) to anyone from your Google Voice number. And due to the nature of how it works it doesn't suffer any of the incompatibility issues MMS has.
Doesn't resolve the issue receiving but allow you to send files directly from your G-Voice number is halfway there
Emoji (partial support)
If you turn on the emoji android keyboard (not on by default but available in JB) you can see emojis that are common between iPhone emoji and Android emoji (they are in black and white on android but it works).
Google voice only seems to support recognition for these emojis (so far I have only seen a heart and a lightning bolt from my iPhone friends) so even on my mac while they show up in color and normal, it is only for common emojis (imagine the same effect could be achieved on the phone with a custom emoji keyboard).
I just wanted to share this because while I don't care too much about emoji the emoji keyboard is not enabled on android by default.
I was wondering if there was a way to get SMS and MMS to work over wifi with any app other than verizon messages. I've been a big user of that since they incorporated individual sounds for contacts. However, their most recent update has made MMS stop working entirely so I've gone back to Messenger for now. But last night I was at a bar with a friend and for whatever reason, inside the building a VZW signal was impossible. Outside the building it was fine....but inside it just dropped out. Wifi worked fine, but I was unable to send or receive any messages. Hangouts I cant remember if it could handle wifi for sms or not...and hangouts is not playing the correct sounds I select for contacts on my 6p.
i'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who used verizon messages that had mms stop working since that latest update. Of course they won't support the Nexus 6p, so I think we're stuck in a waiting game for now.
If you use Google Voice, you can use Hangouts for calls/sms/mms over WiFi or mobile data.
No.. I don't use Google voice. I've had my number far too long to switch to a Google voice number. I like the stock app.... But having the ability to text over wifi was nice with Verizon messages. I had a nasty exchange with their tech support. They kept telling me the same crap. I had to tell them as a nexus owner I'm not a tech idiot. It's on their end and started with their update. Fix it. Of course they continue to tell me it's my fault some setting isn't enabled when it is.

Just to respond to your google voice question. I had a number for almost 14 years. I ported that number over to Google Voice for 20$ one time fee and forwarded my google voice to my cell phone number.
I've been scouring the web for an old version of Verizon Messages and am coming up short. I'm hoping that by installing an old version, it will fix our issues. I'm going to try contacting the developer.

it is available on apkpure site. You can find many old versions. Just do a quick google search and you should find it.
Search Term: Verizon Messages APK
If I can find my S4 and charge it... I can use apk extractor to grab the old version of my S4 from before my nexus arrived. Also might be on my N7 if that hasn't automatically updated.
Big thanks to chichu_9! Inwas able to get last month's version on apkpure and now mms is working again, over wifi and vzw network. I just can't update the app anymore
Thanks @chichu_9 I got the apk from apk pure and all is working well again. Thanks.

yes, that is the version that I rolled back to on my phone and it has been working over wifi. MMS group messages have also been working.
I have 6.02 as well and everything is fine. I received an email from the VZW messages app team and they are aware and "working" on the problem
Adblock plus is blocking mms as of now. Remove it and mms will be back.
I don't have ad block and MMS is still not working on VZW messages. I'm completely stock. It's a problem with the latest update. According to Verizons email they sent me.. "we are aware of the problem and working to correct it"
I asked in the LeeDroid thread, then realized its probably better asked here instead.
Anyone have a working APK for the Verizon Visual Voicemail app for the HTC10? Once I flash a custom ROM such as LeeDroid (and, I assume any other custom ROM?) there's no longer any app for VVM.
In fact, as far as I can tell, there is no voicemail app at all; so anytime someone leaves me a VM, I'm not getting notified about it. The only way for me to check VM's is manually press 1 each time on the dialer.
Anyone else on VZW having this issue?

Sure Did read it.
It says only *86 will be available.
That is my point: you won't any longer get playable messages stored in your M9 as before. You will have to dial *86.

No?

What's going away is the $2.99 option.
Look under "Basic Visual Voice Mail (Included)"
App and *86
Again, read the link you posted. The first line:
On 7/8/2016, the $2.99 Visual Voice Mail service will be discontinued. Some older smartphones and basic phones that support it won't be able to use the service.
This is only impacting some older smartphones and basic phones.
The HTC 10 is newer and a smartphone, and is therefore unaffected because it qualifies for the free basic VVM.
I have the voicemail app n my viper rom here but it takes the 2.99 premium upgrade.
Is the new message+ app what your looking for? I think that had the VVM also. I had it saved somewhere but for the life of me I cant find it now. ill pull it later cause I'm going to back to stock to test something out.

The Voicemail app and Message+ are two different things.
The Voicemail app defaults you to a free trial of the $2.99 premium VVM, but you can downgrade straight away to the free VVM service from the menu.
The Message+ app can be downloaded from the Play Store (search for Verizon Messages).

Thanks all for the replies. Ultimately I'm just going back to Google voice for my VM's.

I figured that out after I searched the play store. I have never seen this basic VVM cause I never used the stuff, I have the app installed but never use , I also thought when I did start up the message app it did have a tab for the voicemail but again it was not there.
My voice-mail goes through my HTC messages app. It is a tab/slide over in the app

Is it set up like the m9 where the messages app has 3 tabs sms, mms, and voicemail because when I tap voicemail it takes me to my text messages with no voicemails after I installed those apks. That's is the messages apk from the Verizon version right? I think there is something else probably missing to make it work properly.

correct, i have no idea what else you need to get going though.
It has to be some type of file that joins the two together.

Yeah, I just had the stock system with the messages app. I was thinking the apk for the messages app would work. Now I'm in leedroid and I don't have it either.

I am experiencing the same thing, after just switching to LeeDroid.
I tried downloading and installing the .APK file referenced in this thread. That seems to work somewhat, but when I launch the app I just get a message that says "Connecting to Visual Voicemail...", and then nothing happens. I wind up having to back out of the app.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Then there was this ... Running LeeDroid
