Phone Screen Wakes Up and Stays On All Night - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I tried searching around the forums but was unable to find a similar problem, so let me describe the problem:
Plug USB3.0 cable into the phone to charge overnight.
Screen immediately lights up because of the charge connection, I press the power button to turn off the screen
Upon returning a few hours later or the next morning the phone screen is on (all night long)
I have the following settings on the phone:
screen timeout set to 15 seconds
"Stay Awake, Screen will never sleep while charging" is turned off under developer options
phone is NOT rooted
Any other ideas on what's going on here? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have Noticed this behavior as well,

Funny thing tho... I clicked "stay awake" in developer options... then do the same as you... plug in the charger, turn off the screen... and now it stays off :silly:

Interesting, I tried what you suggest...Anytime I get a text the screen does come back on and it now stays on so this doesn't quite do the trick for me.
Thanks!

Mine stays off...sounds like maybe a rogue process. Check and see what has the longest process runtime...If it's a user installed app delete it. That doesn't I'd say factory rest

I was getting this behavior, the screen was turning on and off (basically flashing) when I got a text message. I finally uninstalled Textra and that resolved it.
I haven't tried another 3rd party text app, yet.

My phone Screen stays awake all-night what can I do to fix it ?

What did you do to break it?
Presuming this is new behavior, what did you add or remove?

Touch not going off

Hi all
For some strange reason my Touch's back light will go off, but the screen itself will not turn off.
Any ideas, it's killing my battery if I forget to turn it off manually.
Thanks.
Well.....I'll start simple....have you checked to make sure 'turn off device if not used' is checked and you have a reasonable time limit set like 30 secs or a minute? You'll find this under start-->settings-->systems-->power-->advanced. Check to see if it behaves the same way on A/c power too.
I just double checked the settings and all is still right. Funnily enough the screen did go off afterwards. It just seems to do it every now and again. Did Microsoft carry over the need to restart every now and again from XP
Hmmm....you know my phone does that too sometimes. But I've noticed it only happens when its charging or on A/c power. It stays on for a bit longer after the backlight has turned off.....and I've had to wait for upto 3-5 mins for it to turn off. Perhaps your phones doing something similar.
Mine also does not go off when plugged in, but that's because I set it not to (in power settings).
I found my phone completely dead this morning ... any ideas??

Turned off by turn on!

A couple of weeks ago I came home from work and picked up the case my Samsung 10.1 tab was in. Curiously, it felt warm to the touch. When I took my tab out of the case, it was on! Now, I know I turned it off before I placed it in the case. How could it have turned on by itself? And aren't these things supposed to turn themselves off after awhile?
Today, I had my SGTab plugged in to charge for several hours. It was turned off. A couple of minutes ago I was sitting at my computer when I heard a familiar beep. I turned around to where I had my tab plugged in, and much to my surprise it had turned itself on. I noticed that the battery now read 100%. Usually when I unplug my tab it is at 98 or 99% charged. Is is supposed to beep and come on automatically when it reaches 100% charge?
Has anybody else experienced this?
You probably just have a tech-ghost that likes to mess with you. Just ignore it and it will eventually get bored and go elsewhere.
Seriously though, no. That is odd.
Mine turns itself on as well.
I mentioned this in another thread that I started, but mine seems to think USB items are being connected frequently, even when it is not plugged in, or when it is plugged in to power.
If I ever try to power it off, it defiantly powers back on seconds later.
Keep your tab handy and watch to see if the USB connected item shows up in your notifications or if the battery with a red X symbol shows up.
It will turn on to notify you that it is at 100% charge. Mine turns back off after a bit.

Couldn't tell ya cuz I've never charged my tab completely while it was off, I usually just leave it in sleep mode.

Sorry, I didn't mean it was completely turned off; it was in sleep mode. I never turn it "off."
It happens to mine, and I notice that it takes place when charger is plugged in, and power gets cut for some reason.
I read elsewhere that it's supposed to give a sound when it gets 100% full. Mine only vibrates, is that normal?

That could be it, then.
Mine was doing something similar: plug in power connector, tab buzzes, press power button once to put tab to sleep, put down to charge....... come back next morning and tab screen is on.
This is what "fixed it for me": disable the "keep screen on when charging" in the developer options.
As already mentioned, the Tab will turn the screen on when it reaches 100% charge to tell you to remove the charger from the wall socket. If you have the Tab set to keep the screen on when charging, the screen will never turn off again at this point.
As I say, that fixed it for me, but as usual YMMV

[Q] Can you stop screen from coming on when charged/charging?

settings - developer options - stay awake - uncheck box

Hi,
Some custom roms like AOKP allows to enable / disable the "Wake up on charger". If it's unticked the screen don't turn on if you plug / unplug your phone from USB or wall charger.
EDIT: sorry misreading, it's for wireless charging...
I have accomplished this with some Tasker (app) profiles i found on the forum. I have attached them. The profile turns off the screen after 3 seconds of starting charging then prevents it from coming on again. Perfect for inductive chargers that lose charge for a microsecond every little bit. It also keeps the screen off after removing from the charger, you have to manually press the lock button.

Works for me. Screen never comes on after the first three second, which I lowered to one second. have you locked the phone first before you put it on the charger?

I use the orb to charge my N4 at work. This works great until it reaches a full charge. At this point the screen turns on as wireless charging shuts off. Then a minute or so later when it drains to 99%, the screen turn on as wireless charging starts back up. Then when it reaches full charge a minute or so later.... yada yada yada. This is beyond annoying watching my phone flash continuously. My only "solution" at this point is to slide the phone up so that the wireless charging doesn't work and leave it that way until it drains further. Is there any way to tell the screen to NOT come on when charging starts or stops?

How familiar are you with messing with Android?
In system\framework\framework-res.apk\res\values\bools.xml there is this option: <bool name="config_unplugTurnsOnScreen">false</bool>
It is set to true by default but if changed to false, as far as I can tell, the screen won't turn on when you start/stop charging the phone.

I'm assuming you have to be rooted to be able to do this, right?

Yes - best case scenario for editing that value is that you're rooted and deodexed. That way framework-res.apk will be more easily editable.

GT-i9505 S4 Screen Time Out does not activate after charging phone

I have a Galaxy GT-i9505 S4 and whenever the phone is fully charged, I plug out the micoUSB charger cable from the phone FIRST and then after the power charger adaptor from the power outlet. Thats the way to do it according to the user guide.
But, after doing all that after its charged, the phone's screen stays on and the Screen does not time itself out even though I set the display to time out after 30 seconds.
It does time out after 30 seconds whenever I tap something or do something on the screen, or nornally after doing tasks on the phone, it does do its normal time out after 30 seconds.
But I dont know why it did not time out after a full charge session.
Thanks.
I had a smiliar problem, the screen never shut off when connected to a power source. I think somehow the Android debug settings got transferred from my last phone.
These are not the exact words (I use Swedish) but it should get you where you need to go.
Go to Settings - More - About - click "Build nr" until you get a prompt saying Developer options activated - press Back - Developer options - Uncheck "Stay awake".
Hope that helps.

Stay Awake was already UNCHECKED.
And just to understand here, the screen itself DOES shut off during charging, but the screen remains ON after unplugging it from the charger. And the only time the screen times out, is after when I press or do something on the screen. or after normal operating usage.
I just noticed that after I unplugged it from the charger, then I went to another room to do something and this was way longer than 30 seconds, and came back and the screen was still ON.
But, AFTER normal operating usage, the screen always times out after 30 seconds. So, thats OK. No issues there.
I had the problem with the no longer automatically / manually turn-off display and for me it was rename / delete the bootsamsung.qmp in system / media / the cause, soon to rename them or delete the display turns of not more itself off or even manually by button ...
is reproducible, but why no idea, when an idea who likes because nothing is even now what you would normally get in touch oO

S8 G950U won't come back after power button sleep or time-out sleep

If I turn my screen off it will not come back on. I can see a very faint but unusable screen image. If I plug in the charger I can fool around with it and get it to start up. It works normally if I don't turn off the screen or if I leave it on the charger. I tried a new battery but changing it did not cure the problem. Any ideas?
Edit: if I toggle Always On and get the clock during sleep, the problem seems to go away.
Thanks

Use this and toggle the CPU option and set to apply locks on boot https://www.google.com/amp/s/apkfab.com/wakelock-revamp-powermanager/eu.thedarken.wldonate/amp
The problem is related to deep sleep in the phone
