Just picked up my Galaxy S3 today on the Sprint network. I'm trying to change the owner information displayed on my lock screen. Whenever I launch the Owner Information section under the settings/security menu, the phone goes to a black screen and then comes back stating "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped."
Has anyone else noticed or experienced this, or can you replicate the issue?
Thanks.

I've got the same problem. No Idea what could help. Did you find anything out?
Nope, mine works fine
Same problem. The last time I had the same problem with language and input and I noticed it happened because I had disabled s voice. This time I don't know what is causing the issue. Some app might be coming in the way. I have avast anti theft installed so that may be causing the problem. Not sure.
Which carrier do you have? I have Sprint, and my owner information works fine.
Unlocked international version.
I finally made a factory reset and then selected NOT to restore from my Google account. Then it worked fine. I only had to do the settings again. The user apps I could restore with Titanium Backup.
Everything OK now.
I don't wanna reset my phone. There has got to be another way.
So strange that something like owner info would crash. I've reset my phone 3 times in a week and had no problems with it.

Interesting...glad you worked it out but in contrast, I always restore from Google and my owner info works fine. But stranger things have happened. I lost copy/paste after rooting, ended up flashing the stock AT&T rom that's rooted and deodexed and all has been well ever since. Go figure
I think there's a bug (either by Samsung or by Google) when restoring from the Google account. When I select to restore from the Google Account my S3 takes the data from my tablet and I suppose that it cannot handle the information I stored in the owner information of the tablet.
I am pretty sure, all of us who are having this problem have something in common. Some app in all probability cause it does not seem to be a very common problem.

Spot any common apps apart from the pre-installed apps?
Hey guys,
After I rooted my S4, I went in Titanium and uninstalled a lot of the bloatware, including ChatOn. Now I'm having issues with the Samsung text-to-speech engine, which I've heard is attributed to the lack of ChatOn. However, I did make a backup of all the apps, but restoring ChatOn didn't fix the problem, and when I start ChatOn, I just get a black screen. And any time I open the text-to-speech options, it just starts giving me "Unfortunately, Samsung text-to-speech engine has stopped." I can't look at the settings, change the language, or anything.
Does anyone know how to properly restore ChatOn, or some other way to circumvent this problem?
You can only download it on play store or samsung apps and just go to titanium backup and "convert to system app" is that I would try. Anyway I don't think deleting chaton may get you this problem, once I always have deleted it.

I'm no developer but I don't think ChatOn is the cause of this because I've deleted it before on my Note 2 and it never gave me any problem like that. Although I was running OS 4.1.2 and S4 is 4.2.2. But I think it is something else you have froze or deleted. I would recommend go through TB and search the apps you have frozen or deleted that has to do with txt to speech like Talkback or something like that & restore them one by one to see if that corrects it. Just a suggestion.
Change your text to speech provider to google and that error goes away.

Thanks for the responses, everyone.
But yeah I guess I got the idea from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41287449 and another thread somewhere.
So, I guess my problem is a bit complicated, and pretty difficult to explain.
1) I already have Google TTS checked, and I don't get the Samsung TTS error unless I (a) open a Samsung app (like S-voice), or (b) open up my TTS settings.
2) I don't really care about S-voice, although when people ask me to show me S-voice, I'd like to have it functional.
3) The only reason I bring this issue up is because I'm trying to enter my TTS settings in order to enable Light Flow or LEDBlinker Accessibility.
4) The reason it's making me enter TTS settings is because for some reason my system language and TTS language don't match up. >_<
It's all very bizarre and roundabout, but I've just gotten a feeling from some threads that uninstalling certain Samsung Apps (like ChatOn) can cause these TTS problems. I don't have any other apps uninstalled with TiBU, although I do have a few ATT apps frozen.
I'm beginning to think Odin'ing back might be my only option, though I'd like to avoid it. :/

I'm with you on this. I wish I could find more help on this problem. I did the exact same thing and had the same results: I backed up and then uninstalled ChatOn and ChatOnV using Titanium Backup. That made S-voice and S-Translator stop working. So I tried re-installing ChatOn and ChatOnV but they would just freeze when opening, so I uninstalled those again and searched for ChatOn in the play store, installed the two apps (ChatOn and ChatOn Video & Voice) and now ChatOn works, again. The problem is, S-Voice and S-Translator do not. I also switched to using Google TTS in the settings, but I really would like to get S-Voice to work again (S-Translator I can live without, but I'd love it if S-Voice worked). I can't figure out how to get that to work correctly short of Odin-ing, which seems like a lot of effort.

After I froze some bloatware, I actually started having problems with the Samsung text-to-speech (FC's repeatedly, very annoying). To fix the issue, I switched away to Google's TTS, and then froze the Samsung TTS to get it to go away. This, in-turn, broke S-Voice. To fix S-Voice, iirc, I ended up converting it to a User App and it began working again. Quite strange.
Try fiddling with these in different orders. Take backups with TiBu first, of course. As a last resort, Odin'ing to stock should fix anything.
EDIT: also, for broken apps (like Chat-On), try clearing the cache and data for each using TiBu (cache option is on page2).

I tried clearing the cache like you mentioned, but I didn't try freezing the Samsung TTS. I didn't have Titanium Backup Pro, so I couldn't do that, but I went ahead and made the purchase and froze Samsung TTS and that fixed it (I also changed S Voice to a User App, although I'm not sure if that is what fixed it or freezing the TTS).
At any rate, thanks for the help! S Translator works now, as well. I went ahead and froze several other apps that I don't need (rather than removing) and everything is smoother and less bloated
FIXED!

I did the exact same thing. Deleted some bloat ware (including chat on) and S Voice stopped working correctly. Even though I had a back up on TB I it didn't fix the error message. Finally I just unrooted it (just youtube how to unlock & unbrick galaxy s4). Very simple and straight forward. It took it back to factory firmware, then I just rooted it again. And no I'm obviously not going to delete chat on.
How to convert it to user app?

I used Titanium Backup to do this. I'm not sure if this option is available in the basic version - I purchased Pro a very long time ago. Reply if you need some specific instructions.
I am a total newbie, so please bear with me. I had never heard of rooting a phone until I got the Galaxy S4 i337. I saw that the Golden Eye was good for starters, so that is what I put on my phone. I followed directions to the letter and it worked perfectly!!! So thanks for that. Anyway, now that I have it rooted, I noticed a couple things that don't work. The screen mirroring is one of them. I have a friend with an unrooted S4 Active that can see me on the network (I was sitting right next to him) but when he tried to connect, it failed. He also could mirror his phone to the TV. When I pull up screen mirroring, it says that there are no devices to connect to. I didn't know if that was right with this rom, or maybe a setting I haven't found yet. I also have the active apps widget and Greenify to let me know what apps are running, but when I go into the ram manager and hit clear memory, it tells me anywhere from 20-35 apps were killed, and this is when I am not even using the phone. I can do it again 10 minutes later and it says it still killed a bunch of apps. I thought rooting my phone was supposed to help with that, no? And if not, what would you recommend for an app to help. Maybe a different rom would be better? My concern has been with the battery not lasting very long. Thanks!!!

Goldeneye is a very good rom for beginners & vets alike. I would recommend it to anyone as far as that goes. But to answer your question you would need to install the addons called Samsung crap pack in the addon section in op. He took out those apk's because a lot of people prefer not to have all those features for whatever reasons so he just added a flashable zip in the addons for those that do.
Now as far as apps running in the background you would need apps like greenify or titanium backup to freeze those apps that u don't want running in background. Or if there are apps that you simply don't even want you can just delete them with tb or app called Nobloat in play store. Just an FYI, I would freeze them first for a little while to make sure they don't interfere or cause issues with rom. Also can do the same with the CP zip after install use nobloat to delete extra Samsung apks you don't want or use.
Hope this helps you out man & Great choice for a rom btw, you will be pleased with it

Thanks!!! I didn't know the screen mirroring was a Samsung app since it was still on my phone.
I have Greenify, but it only allows me to hibernate a few apps. I have done that to all of the ones allowed and still get 20-30 apps killed when I hit the clear memory on the other app. I will try the other one you mentioned and see if that works better. Again, thanks!!!! I have been enjoying the Golden Eye so far!

GoldenEye is a GREAT ROM, and yes you need the Samsung Crappack addons for some features to work. I also recommend Titanium Backup Pro; its worth the dough. Below is a full list of services you can safely freeze (originally from UCUAMDL AT&T firmware, but many services are still in Goldeneye), anything Samsung is in the Crappack. Just freeze whatever you dont use.
Great choice again.

Wow! Thanks for that list. I am going to download Titanium now. Thanks again you all have been a huge help!! :victory:
Hello, I've had my i9500 gs4 for a while now and finally took a leap of faith and rooted it (had a bad experience before on a gs2) I rooted it fine used the CF-Auto root tar file and open twrp recovery and everything was okay. I installed titanium backup, and nobloat and deleted some apps i really didn't like as well as some other things i didn't find completely useful like face recognition lock stuff. That went all okay and i didnt notice any hiccups in my phone and I left my phone to charge for a while.
When i came back a friend tried to message me on facebook and I hadn't heard my phone notify me and I hadn't received any notifications from the messages at all for an hour, I took a look through some of the things i had frozen in titanium backup and unfroze google play services and installed push notification fixer which did speed up the notifications of my other apps (textra, regular facebook app, emails) but still didn't give me any notifications from the messenger app, i have attempted an assortment of troubleshooting like uninstalling and reinstalling the app, fiddling around with the application settings and the heartbeat intervals for the PNF app, basically anything short of flashing stock.
I am quite lucky with my experience to get this far and this issue is more of an inconvenience more then anything, and to be honest i believe I've just accidentally deleted something, but i would really appreciate any help and I thank you in advance for your time.
You have obviously deleted or frozen something you shouldn't have. I can't believe you froze Google Play Services!
I would download and re-flash your firmware, unless you can replace the apps you deleted?

thank you for the reply, i have cleared the cache, and data off the app and reinstalled it from the google play store and that seems to have fixed the problem at least for now, and yeah xD i felt a bit dumb when i found it frozen.
So I've done a couple factory resets while setting up my new VS995, rooting, etc.
It seems that after initial setup and sometimes even following a couple of reboots more apps just install out of nowhere.
On my last flash the first thing I did was go and freeze all the VZW apps (I'm not with Verizon anymore) and seemingly even after this some additional apps installed.
I don't recall all of them, but there was definitely:
- Yahoo Finance
- Yahoo Newsroom
- Yelp
And 2 or 3 others.
Does anyone know what is causing these apps to install? They don't seem to come back after I remove them.

Are you sure playstore is not installing them? I. Would also suggest you uninstall them instead of just freezing. No point in having them frozen if you don't use them.

I'm not freezing them. I'm freezing the Verizon system apps. It is clear if you look up what Dtignite is that this must be the culprit.
I wasn't able to actually observe if they were installed through the Play Store or through some back channel, but they were clearly getting installed as user apps after the phone was setup. The good part about it is that even though it is bloatware, Dtignite installs it all as user, so it is easy to uninstall.
I just didn't know what was triggering the installs.
Welcome to Verizon. Its dtignite in earlier versions and mobile system something in newer updates, but it still has the purple swirly icon.
