When I rebooted my phone this morning, it was essentially back to factory settings. The start-up wizard came up. All my shortcuts and widgets were back to the default and none of my apps were working.
Signing in to my google account seemed to restore most stuff. And the market still had a list of all the apps I'd installed, even if they were no longer installed. I had to uninstall and reinstall everything. Had to reset up the email app, twitter, facebook etc. SD card contents were still there.
Just to be clear, the apps weren't actually installed, they just appeared to be in the market.
This was just turning my phone on in the morning - I see no point in having it switched on all night!
Any idea what happened or why or whether it's likely to happen again??
I am sure some would like to help, however, your post is lacking many critical details:
1. Are you rooted?
2. What ROM are you on?
3. Did you install anything new or update anything yesterday?
Details, we're not magicians (ok, maybe some of the Dev's here are)...
sorry, bit of a noob!
i am not rooted, i have a stock nexus one running 2.1.1
last new thing i installed was a few days ago - a geocaching app. had normal behaviour with that installed for those few days. also have installed other updates for various apps.

No biggie, Look around at people's sigs and see how they are set up, gives much information without having to post it all the time.
As for the issue, not sure, never had this issue nor have I heard of it.
My Fascinate is rooted properly
Since then, I've installed SetCPU and Titanium Backup from the market...
Shortly after, my phone stopped being able to Download Apps from the Market...
So I uninstalled both programs
The Market says "Currently Downloading" but the Taskbar never shows it happening, and the little download bar in the App spins for a while and just stops.
I even left a simple game downloading overnight to no avail
I also tried clearing all the caches- download manager, market, etc...
Help!
Try canceling your downloads, logging into Talk, then trying again? Or cancel downloads, reboot, log into google Talk, then open Market

I had the same problem. Clearing all the cache and data for market and google apps worked for me.Though a google search has revealed results may vary.

This happens to me and many many people ALL THE TIME. The worst part is that there is never one reason why this happens or one fix. You just have to be lucky. I AM GETTING SICK AND TIRED OF THIS HAPPENING TO ME AND EVERYONE ELSE. Hopefully when froyo comes or something it will not happen anymore.

@billypunk81 That is a quick google for an answer.
And in the future please use the general forum for any and all questions. Unless you are developing something don't start a thread here.
Also give this a read.
good day.
I had same issue and nothing helped. I froze 'Market' and 'Market Updater' from Titanuim then thawed both right away. Started working after that.
Check and make sure Background Data is on. Maybe it got turned off somehow.
Try removing the 2.2 Market if you have it installed. That's what did it for me.
I ran into this situation when I mistakingly restored the 2.2 Market after flashing jt's clean ROM. To solve this, I removed Vendor.apk and reflashed jt's clean ROM. That fixed things for me.
Hey guys,
After I rooted my S4, I went in Titanium and uninstalled a lot of the bloatware, including ChatOn. Now I'm having issues with the Samsung text-to-speech engine, which I've heard is attributed to the lack of ChatOn. However, I did make a backup of all the apps, but restoring ChatOn didn't fix the problem, and when I start ChatOn, I just get a black screen. And any time I open the text-to-speech options, it just starts giving me "Unfortunately, Samsung text-to-speech engine has stopped." I can't look at the settings, change the language, or anything.
Does anyone know how to properly restore ChatOn, or some other way to circumvent this problem?
You can only download it on play store or samsung apps and just go to titanium backup and "convert to system app" is that I would try. Anyway I don't think deleting chaton may get you this problem, once I always have deleted it.

I'm no developer but I don't think ChatOn is the cause of this because I've deleted it before on my Note 2 and it never gave me any problem like that. Although I was running OS 4.1.2 and S4 is 4.2.2. But I think it is something else you have froze or deleted. I would recommend go through TB and search the apps you have frozen or deleted that has to do with txt to speech like Talkback or something like that & restore them one by one to see if that corrects it. Just a suggestion.
Change your text to speech provider to google and that error goes away.

Thanks for the responses, everyone.
But yeah I guess I got the idea from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41287449 and another thread somewhere.
So, I guess my problem is a bit complicated, and pretty difficult to explain.
1) I already have Google TTS checked, and I don't get the Samsung TTS error unless I (a) open a Samsung app (like S-voice), or (b) open up my TTS settings.
2) I don't really care about S-voice, although when people ask me to show me S-voice, I'd like to have it functional.
3) The only reason I bring this issue up is because I'm trying to enter my TTS settings in order to enable Light Flow or LEDBlinker Accessibility.
4) The reason it's making me enter TTS settings is because for some reason my system language and TTS language don't match up. >_<
It's all very bizarre and roundabout, but I've just gotten a feeling from some threads that uninstalling certain Samsung Apps (like ChatOn) can cause these TTS problems. I don't have any other apps uninstalled with TiBU, although I do have a few ATT apps frozen.
I'm beginning to think Odin'ing back might be my only option, though I'd like to avoid it. :/

I'm with you on this. I wish I could find more help on this problem. I did the exact same thing and had the same results: I backed up and then uninstalled ChatOn and ChatOnV using Titanium Backup. That made S-voice and S-Translator stop working. So I tried re-installing ChatOn and ChatOnV but they would just freeze when opening, so I uninstalled those again and searched for ChatOn in the play store, installed the two apps (ChatOn and ChatOn Video & Voice) and now ChatOn works, again. The problem is, S-Voice and S-Translator do not. I also switched to using Google TTS in the settings, but I really would like to get S-Voice to work again (S-Translator I can live without, but I'd love it if S-Voice worked). I can't figure out how to get that to work correctly short of Odin-ing, which seems like a lot of effort.

After I froze some bloatware, I actually started having problems with the Samsung text-to-speech (FC's repeatedly, very annoying). To fix the issue, I switched away to Google's TTS, and then froze the Samsung TTS to get it to go away. This, in-turn, broke S-Voice. To fix S-Voice, iirc, I ended up converting it to a User App and it began working again. Quite strange.
Try fiddling with these in different orders. Take backups with TiBu first, of course. As a last resort, Odin'ing to stock should fix anything.
EDIT: also, for broken apps (like Chat-On), try clearing the cache and data for each using TiBu (cache option is on page2).

I tried clearing the cache like you mentioned, but I didn't try freezing the Samsung TTS. I didn't have Titanium Backup Pro, so I couldn't do that, but I went ahead and made the purchase and froze Samsung TTS and that fixed it (I also changed S Voice to a User App, although I'm not sure if that is what fixed it or freezing the TTS).
At any rate, thanks for the help! S Translator works now, as well. I went ahead and froze several other apps that I don't need (rather than removing) and everything is smoother and less bloated
FIXED!

I did the exact same thing. Deleted some bloat ware (including chat on) and S Voice stopped working correctly. Even though I had a back up on TB I it didn't fix the error message. Finally I just unrooted it (just youtube how to unlock & unbrick galaxy s4). Very simple and straight forward. It took it back to factory firmware, then I just rooted it again. And no I'm obviously not going to delete chat on.
How to convert it to user app?

I used Titanium Backup to do this. I'm not sure if this option is available in the basic version - I purchased Pro a very long time ago. Reply if you need some specific instructions.
Hi so been on 7.0 for at least a month and just last two days phone was being really buggy so I turned the phone off and back on phone didn't prompt for password to boot.
Is there a way I can save the whole phone on to drive to send to someone to take a closer look to see what virus is on here Im guessing it's a rootkit some how also what way would you run packet capture to see things that way?

a virus would be software related...if you did a full wipe and installed fresh software and it continues it might be an app you keep installing...do you get your apps from the playstore or side load as well

playstore only before my phone was locked boot loader and encrypted to have to use pin to boot device.
AS SOON as i get the buggy phone and reboot when it boots up it no longer request pin to boot. on stock rom i was rebooting phone every week to see how long it would take and usually nothing odd until phone got buggy for reason of the reboot.
the buggy issue is shortly opening an app the app will freeze so i hit home nothing happends try to turn the screen off nothing happends until a minute later sometimes phone will reboot its self or i hold power to make it reboot but both take about same amount of time when phone goes into full freeze.
so it being a playstore app and the virus not getting detected google needs to look into how they can patch this...
so im putting this out there so this person or group doesnt forever have a backdoor into peoples phones.
this issue i have had since november last year but havent been so aware about the issue till august. since august ive been dealing with know some how they are getting in and must be an app but i got rid of all games and weird apps that are not nessisary

these are all the apps ive had since ive had this issue.
i was hopping that esfiles exploreres new feature of being notified of new files would help solve this but some folders it doesnt detect like youtube or google music even though in es files explorer i unlocked ability to view the .nomedia
Drop ES File Explorer, to start. Read this article, or do some googling about it on your own;
https://www.androidpit.com/this-is-why-you-should-not-use-es-file-explorer
I have to agree with the article when it says Solid Explorer is a great replacement. I've used it for years now and it's never let me down.
The fact of the matter is, if you manually wiped all of your phone and formatted your internal storage, nothing remains from pre-wipe. If your issue is coming back it can only be a hardware issue (if applicable) or some app you are using, as previously mentioned.
Furthermore, after googling your exact issue I came to find that certain apps that require 'Accessibility Services' can and will disable your pin/password/pattern on boot. Check if any of your apps fit the bill in 'Settings > Accessibility > Services'
Disable any apps which are enabled and reboot. You may have to set up pin, etc., again, but leave the services disabled and see if the issue returns. Let us know!
Edit: Upon more googling, I've found reports of people who had the issue return after disabling & uninstalling the apps in question as well. You may need to flash stock images again and do not install any apps that require accessibility services, or don't grant any of them permission even once.
Edit2: Just another link to check out;
https://blog.g3rt.nl/android-lollipop-encryption-user-interface-flaw.html
Edit3: Issue tracker link; https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=219498
Edit4: If you logged into your bank app and factory reset or flashed factory images, logging in again after the wipe/flash will show as a new device. Same goes for having login alerts set for Google / Facebook, etc. Your same phone shows as a new device after the flash or wipe. Guaranteed not a virus.

I turned off keeper nothing.

I dont know how to re enable boot encryption pin.

Thank you I will keep you informed give it till February if nothing odd happened.

Hi folks,
I've got a stock 6013, fully up to date on Android 10, never rooted or anything, and suddenly the Gmail app started crashing. Every time I would open it, it would crash within a second. At first I thought it was just that app. I wiped storage for Gmail, and things seemed back to normal. Then I noticed certain other apps... but ONLY CERTAIN APPS... started doing the same thing. Wiping their storage restored them. Even going into the Google Search bar results in a crash within a second or two.
It's not a hardware fault... I just finished a half an hour of Angry Birds 2 ( ) with no problems. But now Gmail is acting up again. Tapatalk was a problem once, but clearing its storage restored it and it seems stable.
Anybody else seeing very weird repeated app crashes that happen within a second or so of starting said app?
Marc
I'm having the exact same problem. This started 4-5 hours ago. Before noon PDT, a game I was playing worked fine, but by 1pm, I saw the same symptoms. Gmail is also crashing for me, as well as Oxygen Updater and the Amazon Shopping app.
Clear system cache.
Try using factory load for gmail and Google Play Services. Clear the latter's data.
Delete Google account and recreate if the above doesn't work.
Google Play Services is probably the culprit.

Thanks. Did that and went through https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/9037938?hl=en as well. Once that was done, uninstalling and reinstalling the offending apps seems to get them working. It was definitely Google Play Services throwing a huge tantrum. I haven't messed with Gmail yet, but Pocket Casts and Amazon shopping are back up after uninstall/reinstall. Thanks!

Doesn't hurt anything to clear Google Play Services data, I do it weekly.
I also package block it except as needed like for Gmail.
Disable Google Firebase if you don't use it; data miner and a resource hog.

Not good
I rarely update OS's anymore, even with app updates I keep backup copies of the older version(s) if needed.
Since Q, Google has been on a downward spiral with Android. I'm not impressed.
As long as I have a fast, stable platform that fullfills its mission, I leave it be.
Even a malware forced factory reset be less time consuming then trying to adapt to Google's concept of "improvement".
Thanks folks. It was the issue @meowingtv cited. Last night I found a temporary fix was to roll back the Android System Web Viewer app, which I did. This morning I saw the all-clear that it was ok to re-update it and Chrome at the same time. All good now, but this was a SERIOUS CLUSTER.
