I haven't installed TWRP or cwm as of yet. I am rooted. It seems like I am seeing a lot of people having various problems and not being able to reboot. Does this seem to be coming from user errors or are there some issues when installing recovery software on the G2?
I'm not real interested in installing a custom rom but like having a full backup in case of problems.
1 last question. I bought one of the meenova devices so I could use my 64gb scard. Am I correct that cwm is the way to go if I want to,save my backups through USB?
Thx
I'm wondering same thing..
I really need to do EFS backup, but after reading problems with TWRP, I really don't want to go there..
I'm on CWM now, and have all my backups that way
Luckily I haven't lost my EFS data, althoug I've flashed like five different ROMs.
Now I really really want this thing backed up.
Also have same concern with OP. Have read many posts that they semi brick and LG Flash tool gives error when returning to stock. I'm kinda nervous because even flashing stock sometimes they get error?

Hey guys so I have a weird problem.
I can't restore my new backups.
That means all backups I did 2 weeks ago are restorable but now, when I do a backup of my current cyanogenmod rom and try to restore it, I get stuck at the HTC boot screen.
I heard it's because I used rom manager and sometimes rom manager destroys the PC10IMG, is that true??
Same thing happened to me. I had to do everything all over again. It will be nice if there is some more information about the problem. Thank you.

don't trust rom manager to perform recovery operations through its gui with any consistency.
if you're going to perform a recovery operation, just do it through CWM and save the hassle.
Well I did it all /backups & recovery/ through CWM and just hang on the welcome screen. Not that it was important because I only wanted to back up something I forgot after intending of installing a new rom, but still the question remains and it will be helpful for future time
I've found that Nandroid backups are unreliable if I'm at all low on free space on the SD Card. Even if there are no errors during the backup. I make sure I've got at least room for two whole backups now. Seems to solve the problem.
Hi,
I have a problem with my cwm. I made a backup with cwm without any error.
But when I tried to restore it I got an error at the point of data restore.
As a result, I miss most of the app data.
I have no idea why I get an error. Checksum is fine. I did the backup with another version of cwm than I tried the restore. But that shouldn't be a problem, right?
Please help me. I need my app data.
Thanks in advance.
Log file is not saved by the way.
Solved
Even though nobody seems to be interested in my problem, i wanted to post the solution. Maybe somedy someone will need it.
The problem indeed was the different versions of cwm.
I did the backup with 6.0.2.3 non touch cwm and then i updated to 6.0.3.0 non touch cwm.
Stupid, i know. I had no img of the old one at first. SO i tried many things. I flashed the 6.0.2.3 touch cwm which didn'n work either.
But i found the image of the 6.0.2.3 non tocuh cwm on my phones sd partition. I don't know why it was stored there, it seems cwm backups a image everytime you backup a rom.
Doesn't matter, i flashed it and bam.... it worked.
I think its kind of a bug that an backup from a further version cannot be restored with a new one.
And i think its no good that the developer doesn't provide the old versions on his HP.
For the future I and you as well will know.
Thanks
get twrp, seriously. cwm simply cant keep up anymore unless they make a super effort to bring it up to date again.
Moles himself is answering me. What an honor. I'm a big fan of PA ... I use nothing else.
I already replaced cwm with twrp. I read a few things on the web last night. Many users prefer twrp. I just didn't know that it makes any difference until now.
Thanks and kepp PA as innovative as it is
Ok so after rooting and using Flashify to install Loki'd TWRP 2.3.6.2, I backed up my stock rooted. Then, I wiped and flashed PA 3.99. Other than this phone taking forever to do anything in TWRP, everything seemed fine. I booted into PA, installed my normal software setup, rebooted to recovery, and made a backup.
Now, if I try to restore (either stock rooted or PA, it fails. It says something about unchecking the MD5 verification option, which I have done in the general TWRP settings, as well as making sure it stays unchecked in the restore preferences. Have tried restoring to both stock rooted and PA from both a PA install, and a fresh stock rooted install. Both fail with the same error.
I'm backing up/restoring to/from the internal SD, not an OTG cable. my cable that worked fine for my Note 2 and HTC One does not work with my G2. I have also tried re-flashing TWRP in case it was a bad install or something.
Does anybody have any thoughts/suggestions on what I can do to be able to restore roms? I've never had any issues like this with any other device.
I'm interested in this as well. But honestly I haven't been able to restore a damn backup in quite some time using my Galaxy Nexus using TWRP and CWM. It just seems like it tries to, but fails toward the end.
I did a backup of my stock/unrooted but haven't tried to restore it yet. Have you thought or tried to use one of the GUI Apps from the Play Store that does Restore/Backups? I would also pull those backups off of your phone and onto a PC. You can always copy them back later but I've erased everything using TWRP a few too many times.
I would also suggest trying to use CWM to restore the backups. I've never tried to restore a Nandoid from one recovery using another, but it may work.
Sadly with restore not working, it is kind of scary to even attempt it. I would make sure I have some stock images laying around with the ability to adb push if need be. Keep this updated please with either findings or solutions. If I knew 100% that my Nandroid backup was able to be restored, I would attempt to try some of the custom roms out there.

Thanks for the reply.
I have only tried directly through TWRP. I've been flashing phones and tablets for years, but only using TWRP and CWM. I've been using TWRP lately because it's gui is nicer and until now, I've never run into any problems with it.
And yes, restore not working scares me. I know I can adb stock if I screw things up, but I hope it doesn't come to that. I guess for now I'll keep running stock rooted (despite it's horribly ugly unlock animations) and just wait for official AOKP with 4.4...
Lots of ppls here lost their efs, imei etc.. Or getting bootloop or can't make phone call wifi not working after flash a new rom or tried to do nandroid restore.....
Good news are we have so many hard working devs come up solutions to repair those problems.
But for a newbie like myself. I am waiting or looking for a ultimate backup method that has been proven working.... So I don't have to worry about flashing my phone. (I am flasholic Hahaha...) Is there one already? Or is there gonna be one soon?
Sorry for my childish English.

Backing up your EFS is probably the biggest one, however I backed mine up and bootlooped and couldn't restore it so had to use this efs fix anyway.. So short answer, not really, Samsung phones are not mod friendly anymore, or as mod friendly as they once were.
Helium is a good choice for non-root backup and TB for root or a recovery back up (CWM offers custom backup)
Just the thread I was looking for. I'm looking for a WORKING backup solution for my rooted Note 3 but none seems to work.
I have seriously tried at least 7 different backup/restore apps (haven't tried TB as it just comes off as too much for my taste; haven't even downloaded it) and each of them have had their own issues. In the end I could never get my apps backed up to begin with, much less to attempt a restore.
Last one tried was Helium; I go through the backup process and I have no idea if the backup jobs were done. I see a black screen which eventually disappears and that's it. (this is basically the case for all the apps I've tried to run) Nonetheless I went to try and restore from Google Drive which I connected the Helium app to and I get the error "an error occurred while retrieving your app list". No backed up apps are displayed...
Is it something I am missing? Can anyone suggest a backup app besides TB that actually works, please. All I need is the Apps + AppData backed up to either Google Drive or Dropbox.
Much thanks to anyone who can help.
I use Helium and it seems to work ok but a LOT of people seem to have issues with it.
G-Cloud also works well and it saved me a lot of work when I had to do a factory reset when trying to fix the corrupted EFS partition.
Backing up the EFS seems to be less important on the Note3, once it's reformatted using the fix here it seems to sort itself out afterwards by rebuilding the info from the underlying hardware. Restoring the EFS when it breaks won't fix the problem as it's the partition itself that's damaged, not the EFS data within it.
And of course, Titanium Backup is still the king IMO.
I'm wondering if there is any way to basically copy the entire phone.. os and all... and make a rom out of it? I just thought life would be so much simpler if I could do a fresh install of 4.4.2, root, recovery, do all the tweaks/settings and removal of bloatware I don't like and then install all my standard apps *minus games of course* and make it into a rom, I could save myself tons of time by not having to keep rinsing and repeating this long procedure whenever I run into major issues.
If you make a proper backup...then have to restore it, it will restore exactly how you had it at the moment you made the backup.
So....you can
If you say "Please" be sure and hit "Thanks"!!!

I used CWM and made a nandroid but it must not back "everything" up, because I had some issues after replacing numerous files and when I ran restore and it rebooted... had window after window popping up telling me "this stopped working and that stopped working"... nonstop... ended up having to do a complete wipe and reinstall.
Thats why I thought there might be a better method like making a rom as I mentioned in my original post.
Then you made your nandroid incorrectly.
Either you didn't select all the partitions (inclusing media) and the SE context.
OR the recovery you used is the issue.
I've created hundreds, if not thousands of nandroids and flash between ROMs/Builds all the time. [well not lately been working 15+hour days]
Take some time and read through the OPs and follow up discussions for the recoveries and ROMs and you'll find the right combo of recover/ROM.
I always make sure my nandroids restore before moving on to another ROM or build. IF they don't then I can rebuild current ROM (since I know exactly what is involved), try another recovery and see if it restores after complete double/triple wipe and install of another ROM base. If that works I'll note the recovery/ROM combo and then move on.
Just my two cents.
