Hello,
I have a Galaxy S4 4G (I9505) with a 32GB external micro-SD card formatted as exFAT. I use this to record some seminars that takes often 0.5-1.0 hour. The video seems to stop after 30-45 minutes based on the video resolution, but always when the file size reaches 4GB.
I know that ex-FAT allows more than this. My device reads it fine and everything, but the camera app still enforces the limit. I'm using the stock app, on a non-rooted Android 4.2.2 (OTA update), the Samsung version not the Play one. It's also usually not a battery problem (battery is often above %50 after recording, and sometime it's in charger from laptop or power plug).
If I understand correctly, Android API allows overriding this limit and maybe making it unlimited, but I can't find any video recording application that does have this limit disabled. Can you suggest any?
Otherwise, if there is another custom ROM or whatever that I may install to get a modified stock app without the limit, I'd take that as an option, although obviously just recommending a 3rd party video recording app that overrides the limit sounds like a much less hassle (even for someone familiar with rooting and flashing, from my old Galaxy S 1 days).
Thanks a lot.
I tried Snap Camera but it seemed to have the same issue (stops at 4GB when saving to SD Card, which supports more as exFAT formatted. Other Suggestions?
Solution
Open Camera can split the file. Another one is called Secrete Video Recorder, but Open Camera is really what you're looking for. But notice that since the Kitkat update apps cannot save files to the SD card. Yes, that's what I said, Google decided that only their apps can record, everyone else can't. So if you haven't updated, don't, if you did, downgrade back to Jellybean.

I did some video recording today in bright sunny conditions and when i went to watch the clip back the video stutters at times and also the sound is out of sync.
Handset is sim free and standard with the standard 8gb card that came with the phone.
Anyone else getting this?
I am sure i have read somewhere about video recording problems with other handsets where the class of memory if not high enough i.e 6 plus that there are issues recording in hd.
any ideas?
Turn off "Image stabilizer" in video & capture video again Hope it works
I don't have the link handy but there is an audio sync issue on the arc that becomes more noticeable the longer the recording is. It was reported to SE support. Hopefully a fix will be released.
Here is a link
yeah i have the same problem and you can se other peoble with the same problem on this link go to talk.sonyericssondotcom
someone on another thread in here (think it might have been commodoor) suggested that it might be related to low internal storage.. I've installed "auto memory manager" which tweaks the andoid mem manager to keep more memory free - rather than killing active tasks - since I did that I haven't seen the problem (YET)!!.. have you noticed if you get this problem when you have low memory available?
thanks for all the replys
Well i have very vew apps installed on the phone at the moment but will check where they are stored and move them to the memory card if that is thought to help.
The video clip itself was only about 3mins max in length so that really shouldnt be an issue should it?
I will also try it with the image stabalizer off if thats thought to help.

I said it somewhere. again i had this when i just got my phone. But it can also happen if you have a slow sd card. Slow sd card was the problem at Nexus forum when we where able to record 720p with the nexus. it looks like the same issue. But with the standard delivered cd card ishould work great. i use a class6 16GB card so no issues with that.

Are you using the standard delivered sd card with your arc?
what also can happen is that you have to use the phone a while like couple of days ti get everything working right (so the dalvik-cache can build). after couple of days it will work great.
just noticed that the standard card i have is only a class2
that cant be right is it?

Yes, that's right
My Arc and Desire HD came with Class 2 cards too.
seems very low for a device to record hd to?

It is low indeed. i don't knwo why they put a class2 card, class4 would be a lot better.
I am using VGA modes now because of that
Hope it's only a matter of sdhc class...
pretty sure that class 2 should be quick enough to support HD recording...
EDIT - Depends on the compression rate - but Class 2 supports upto 2MB/s (16Mb/s) and most 720p, compressed, is likely to be less than 10Mb/s.. so should be fine.
Never had this kind of issue.video recording just fine. I usually upload to facebook.although I convert and resize it first.but both still fine
GN Multimedia-Xperia Arc
Keep having this problem with every video I record is starting to really annoy me.
im also having this problem.. but only with 720p recording.. no prob if using other settings..
I get camera freeze on mine with a class 10 32gb card :-(
Sent from Galaxy Tab.
have you tried clearing the internal phone memory before you record? I suspect that it's the way the system is caching and then writing out to SD, rather than the SD card speed.. If the Camera has more internal memory available then it may be ok? I did you couple of tests and it seemed ok.. (currently using Free Memory Manager - which manages the system using the in build memory manager, rather than killing tasks indiscriminantly.
I also have the problem even with class4 card...
I am using the stock provided Class 2 16GB card with no problems.
I use Auto Task Killer so I have a good amount of RAM available always.
I have read numerous accounts of people being disappointed with the video capability of this phone. I have experienced numerous times that while taking a video the video will temp. freeze. After some trouble shooting with different kernels, ROMS, camera apps, and everything else i have found the reason for this freezing. It seems that if you use sd card for storage by selecting choose sd card storage within the camera app the video will always have tendencies to freeze do to the write speed limitation of the sd card. I have a 32gb class 4 and the write speed is not enough for the high quality video to write without problems. If you are fortunate enough to have a class 10 this may not happen. I have also found that selecting internal memory when using ROMS such as CM7-CM9 although CM9 does not have a working video camera yet, the problem is not present. Just wanted to share for those who bash the Atrix but won't go to another phone and stop *****ing.
Hello beautiful people.
So, what happened was, I recorded a video, i did press pause a few times, to keep the video in one file. The location would be on micro sd card.
After some time (some time did run by), then I somehow hadn't noticed that the battery might be running flat. NExt thing is, the phone shuts off/down. I was hoping that it did save the footage. But alas, the only thing I can figure, is that there are 2 files in a 'thumbnail' folder, sized 600-800 MB, these seems to be interesting because of the timestamps. A thumbnail can hardly be of those sizes ?
I copied them to the PC and renamed them to .MP4, however, because of a missing 'header' or something they don't seem to be playable, I checked them with IrFanVew, SUPER, and other programs. They don't seem to recognize the files.
And year, its the i9505 model, rooted, with hm, omega rom (v19 on 4.3 jelly-cream-cookie-icing-on-the-cake or whatever)
before the next 20 replies tell me to use search function..i have searched in vain for vast amount of time, and nothing seems to help.
I hope I have explained the problem well. I assume, as the video recording can tell the used space (I figure 600-800mb is the size used, or like 5-7 minutes in fullHD), that the footage is saved somewhere.
Would there be any hope in using recovery programs ? I haven't have luck using those in the past, as they find all kinds of junk (including tons of thumbnails and logos etc), and I suppose, the actualy <temporary?> footage isn't classified as an .MP4 video file.
What do you think ? The problem lies not in, forgetting to save the footage, or pressing the back button. the footage/ the recording may very well have been on pause, while the phone shut off because of lack of battery power. THough I haven't checked the battery, as I replace batteries, when one battery is low. WIth a dock, i simply switch out the battery.
Thanks a bunch in advance to any good tips and help you can come up with. If anyone has a good understanding of how the standard camera app works as for saving footage in terms of temporary file locations, and/or how to handle said temporary footage files, I'd be grateful. Maybe I can check up on whether there's any temporary files that hopefully can be converted in to working video viles ?
regards
aerobotix.
At worst
I should have never taken the Kitkat update. Yeah, I read all the things about third party apps not being able to save to SD card but I didn't think that would effect the stock apps and the way things normally occur. So.. Here's my biggest problem which has me extremely pissed after attending EDC NYC last night..
I use the stock camera app to record a lot of video. Unfortunately... Like NONE of it saved. I have the SD card set as storage. The pictures saved. None of the video I recorded last night saved. Sometimes it looked like it did, then it wouldn't play. Or I'd get the corrupted icon. I look this morning, nothing there. Thankfully I also brought a REAL digital camera and used it sometimes, but.. All the good video I used my crappy Note 3(showing my rage). What is wrong and how do I fix this? Why wouldn't the stock camera video app keeps my videos?
Another weird problem I have and I can't seem to figure out why it's happening. Many times when I go into settings, my ringer volume and everything drops and goes into complete silence. Like I had manually reduced the ringer sound fromt he side button which I didn't. Then I have to jack it back up.
Also, some apps now have a tendency to save to the SD card right from the Google Play. Only thing is, they save to SD card and are not able to be run. They crash instantly and say they have stopped... You then can't move them from SD card to internal memory either cause they crash then as well.. You uninstall them, they install again on SD card when u try to reinstall and same problem. Only way to get them to install to internal memory and be able to run is to remove the SD card, install them when there is no SD card in phone, then reinstall SD card and they will then run from internal memory cause they weren't installed on SD card. Is there a setting that somehow got switched to install to SD card instead of internal by default? Seriously... Kitkat has made my once joy to use Note 3 complete sadness...
All this badness happened since I got Kitkat. I'm not rooted either. I should have rooted before I guess but.. Ugh.. Is there a root method now if we took the OTA update? TY in advance!

No root yet for kitkat, that's why I kept bypassing update on mine until I got root up. Now on KitKat with SD Card Fix(which you need root for) and all is well. Unfortunately Kitkat has drastically changed what Apps can and can't do with the same permissions they hat on JB. Honestly I agree this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen, but I guess they were sick of the malware and poorly written apps blowing away other apps data or stealing it. It's too bad they had to go the apple route.
Short of returning and demanding a JB phone, Only advice is be patient and hope someone figures out how to root, or find apps that properly work with Kit Kat SD Card settings.

The main problem right now is the video recordings. I can't record anything beyond like 15 seconds with Instagram. If I use the camera's video recorder I see it recording, but when I stop it, he recording becomes corrupted and is unplayable. An idea what is causing this? Would reformatting the SD card work? The thing is this is the stock camera app. It shouldnt have any prob recording stuff to SD. The picture record. It's just the videos that are screwing up

Change the camera storage to Phone and and see if that works, if so, then it sounds like your card has an issue, or the App has issues accessing it properly. I would start by reformatting the card, if that doesn't work then maybe you need a hard reset.
1+ for EDC NYC haha
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Free mobile app
So from some research I've learned that I cannot root my phone because of the Marshmallow update, which is unfortunate to say the least because I want this exact mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/development/mod-hx-camera-mod1-0quality-t2816831
Primarily I need it so I can record video for over the FAT32 HDD limits. Mucking about with quality, focus and all that is a bonus at this point basically. All I want is to record video to a micro SD on the phone without having to hit the record button every twenty minutes! Preferably it would run for about three hours for my needs. Attempted to use Autoboy dash cam because reviews stated that it would simply stop and start recording for you, essentially just hitting the "record" button for you when a clip reached its maximum file size--but this hasn't worked for me. The video listed under Autoboy's internal file directory shows the clip at 48 minutes, but when accessed through the file manager the clip states 28 minutes, and plays at only 28 minutes regardless of how the file is accessed.
Basically:
1. Is there a way to root this phone yet? (I would do anything at this point, but I know there isn't.)
2. Is there a camera app or hack that will do this for me, without being majorly unreliable or downgrading quality immensely?
Thank you for your time, I've tried researching this on my own but have continually hit a number of dead ends it seems. Hope for a quick and helpful reply (the answer that this is impossible is also quite helpful)!
