[Q] rooting a 4.3 device - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

nexus 7 2012 updated to 4.3 JB.any idea on rooting it (build JWR66Y) ?

Use WUG's toolkit bro

Very simple and easy. I use that tool to root

Its a nexus, just boot to fastboot
fastboot OEM unlock
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Now boot to recovery and flash one of many amazing custom ROMs
I really suggest doing as many things as you can manually, it takes little time or effort to root a nexus and you will learn much more than you would from any toolkit

how to root android 4.2 nexus 7?

I noticed the threads arecurrently only for 4.1, is it possible to root 4.2 yet?
Of course 4.2 is root able. There are threads outlining this.

I've used wug kit to root 4.2
just like any other nexus or android version before 4.2.. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash either the su binaries or a custom rom in your recovery, reboot.

[Q] nexus 7 toolkit root failed

Hi all,
I am new to Android and just used the nexus 7 toolkit v3.2 to unlock my nexus 7. The rooting seemed to proceed without a hitch, but after the reboot it doesn't seem to be rooted, according to root checker. What should I do?
Thanks in advance
Root manually. This is a Nexus, there's no need for all this toolkit crap. (No offense to the devs of course, they are awesome)

Use Wug's toolkit, it's better. The devs of that toolkit you are using have only given updates to paid members - that toolkit version is quite old.

Don't use a toolkit. It is one command to unlock, one command to flash cwm. Then you flash supersu from cwm. It takes less than 2 minutes.
Agree, but OP seems like a newbie.

Could you provide a link to instructions? It would really help, thanks.
I was able to get rooted, and flash cwm using wug's toolkit. I also found instructions to do it manually, so I will try that next time. Thanks!

Possible to get stuck in fastboot?

Hey guys this may seem like a really stupid question... But is it possible to get my Nexus 4 stuck in fastboot mode? This is going to be my second android device and I want to root it. I have a Kindle Fire that when I first attempted to root it got stuck in fastboot mode and was not recognized by my computer. I managed to get on another computer and complete the root, but is there any risk of this happening to my new Nexus 4? Thanks
There are always risks, but it is very low risk with the Nexus. The Kindle is locked down by Amazon thus is a pain to root, while Nexus is a development device made by Google so root is very easy and straight forward. Don't worry about it
Thank you for answering! Can't wait to root it. What do you yhink is the best method?

I used mskip's ToolKit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688
but Wug's works too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469
I personally recommend Wug's since it has a graphical interface with a lot less options (much easier to use). There is also a detailed guide on how to install Nexus 4 driver.
For recovery, installing it via ROM Manager/Goo.im after root obtained works best. The ToolKit doesn't seem to flash recovery very well.

The same happened with my Kindle fire but not the Nexus 4 as it is meant to be unlocked and accessible. Hack on!

Rooting android 4.2.2 nexus 4

I updated my nexus 4 to 4.2.2 and have terrible battery results. I want to root and flash cm 10.1 does anyone now if any toolkits have updated to root 4.2.2?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
All the toolkits should still work.
But do yourself a favor and learn to use fastboot and adb. Super easy to use, and its all you need on a nexus
Fastboot oem unlock
Fastboot flash recovery recoveryfilegoeshere.img
Fastboot reboot-recovery
Adb sideload romfilenamegoeshere.zip
Adb sideload gappsfile.zip

Yeah I'm new to this whole thing haha. Do you know any good videos that do adb to learn from?

4.2.2 has a tremendous batterylife improvement over 4.2.1. I would recommend a data/factory reset or even better flash the whole 4.2.2 factory image for optimal result.

best way to root 4.2.2

didnt notice that the nexus 4 toolkit did not work after the 4.2.2 update so whats my next best option?
Unlock bootloader in fastboot, fastboot flash your recovery then flash an SU zip then your rooted

Toolkits work fine. Need to update devkit, follow the developers download sites and instructions.
