Hello guys,
I'm new to Android (switched from iPhone) and I wanted to use my ad-hoc network, which is hosted from my computer. But my LG G2 doesn't see the network on the list.
Now I've read a lot about "wpa_supplicant" and tried several files but none of them worked on my phone (rooted).
Can somebody help me with my issues or give my some tips to make ad-hoc networks work on my phone?
Greetings from Germany :good:
Android doesn't support ad hoc. You're right there has been a few devices that can be modded to get WPA supplicant to work. But it depends on the wireless card. I'd research in that direction

Hi!
Did anyone manage to connect to an ad hoc wifi network? Its my understanding that you have to root your phone and edit some files in order to do so. My phone is already rooted. Anyone willing to try it out and give the steps here?
Thanks!
Android 2.1 does not support this.
Yes! I know that! But i think you can edit some files after rooting in order to allow this?
Galaxy S wont find ad hoc AP, how to fix?
Hi, how to configure galaxy to connect to a ad hoc ap? It seems like wont find the ac hoc SSID at all?
Hello,
Ad Hoc Access Points support start with Froyo, if you really need it, give the latest XXJP2 a try
Any luck finding the answer?
Nope! No luck yet! And it seems no one is interested

have you tried modifying those files (wpa_supplicant.conf and others)?
Are you just trying to use your phone as a mobile APN? Because this is built into the galaxy S.

I am trying to use my wired LAN connection on my phone using the Laptop's ad-hoc wifi connection.
I'm reasonably confident that it simply isn't supported in Android 2.1 and that it's totally unrelated to config files (i.e. There's nothing your average user can do about it). I don't know if ad-hoc wireless made it into Froyo but there has definitely been an official feature request filed to Google for ad-hoc functionality.
i also find it very annoying that sgs doesn't support ad-hoc.
You can try to use this software http://www.connectify.me/
sadly it uses windows 7..
Just had a look over here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
Can any dev please patch the SGS version of wpa_supplicant? Pretty please?
Another thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755254
really??
i couldn't find it even though i have jp3
The android OS filters out all Ad-hoc networks. There was a patched wpa_supplicant that seems to be working for some. I tried it and it does display the ad-hoc networks but fails when trying to obtain an IP... I am stay playing with it but I will update if I even manage a connection.

[Q] still no ad hoc in JPC??
is it true??
i tried a couple times and i'm still wondering about this ad-hoc problem
anyone?
i really need to confirm this
[Q] ad hoc in jpc??
is there still no ad hoc compability in the new FW JPC??
is there any trick to connect wi-fi from laptop to galaxy s.
PS: i use vista, so no connectify.
thx
i setup my samsung vibrant for wireless tether, my laptops connect without any problem but my tmobile galaxy tab won't pick it up. seems like the wireless tether is invisible to the tab.... anybody can shoot me a fix? thanks!
I believe the Tab, as with all Android devices, doesn't see ad hoc networks. Wireless Tether uses ad hoc. Only 3G Mobile hotspot on VZW uses true infrastructure mode. There are hacks out there depending on the type of phone you have.
Search for wpa_supplicant You need to swap out this file with the stock one

thanks for the advice! after i swapped the wpa_supplicant, it's working now
How do you swap it out? I found 3 files with that name. 2 of them have .conf at the end of their names.

The Nexus S 4G will allow you to tether 3G or 4G using most of the apps in the market such as Wireless Tether or the built in hotspot app (3G only), but these methods turn your NS4G into an Ad-Hoc network. Some devices, my notebook computer for instance won't accept an Ad-Hoc connection so I found another (Simple IMO) method.
Some background:
My brother has an Evo 4G and he has never had any issues tethering to my notebook computer using 4G so I wanted to find out why. Turns out Evo's use a different method of tethering. They do not broadcast as an Ad-Hoc network they use a completely different method of tethering called "SoftAP". This essentially makes Evo's think they are actual Access Points, which any wi-fi enabled device can connect to.
I found a way to make my NS4G work in this manner using the WiFi Tether app, very similar to the Wireless Tether app in the market.
Prerequisites:
MUST be rooted.
Make a nandroid backup ( better safe than sorry)
Have some time to toy with the settings if the ones listed below don't work (which they should)
Download and Install attached file "WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta6" on your NS4G and grant SU permissions.
Open app and go to Settings-> and change to the following below:
Change Device-Profile: Samsung Galaxy S
Change Setup-Method: Netd (Master)
Once you change those settings you will be able to tether as an Access Point and not as an Ad-Hoc connection allowing you to connect and tether your 4G with pretty much any wifi device.
You may have to play around with the different variations of the options but the ones I have given above should work just fine.
**One thing I should note, the only issue I've had with this is set up is when you stop the connection. The app might "Force Close" and on occasion reboot the device. But that is a small price that I pay to tether my 4G connection.
Let me know if this method works for you just so I can confirm it wasn't a fluke on my end!
Hope this helps anyone with similar tethering issues.
the latest version from the market allows you to choose softAP mode

Wireless Tether is blocked for us 4G users on the market. The last version that I was able to download from the market was 2.0.7 and it didn't include the softAP option. While I never have had a problem running in ad-hoc mode it's good to know the app has been updated since 2.0.7, thanks joesloco for the heads-up.
btw your instructions worked for me I was able to connect with 4G through an actual AP instead of an ad-hoc network.
Shuts my 4g and 3g down waaaaah!!!

My Nexus S 4G is running on latest stable version of Cyanogenmod.
As far I know, the 4G switch/widget is broken in this version.
When I turn it on from settings, 4G scans for a while and then it says disconnected. Does 4G work with Cyanogenmod? Any patch required? Or should I replace with a different ROM?
I'm in a major city that has Sprint 4G coverage.
How could I get 4G tethering working?
Thank you.
Great guide. I forgot all about this when I used it on my optimus.
I heard that this is faster than the native one. Is that true?
I was wondering if there was a method to enable ad hoc in the new ICS roms. I know it's early in the development, but if there is a simple fix i'd love to hear it. I have tried all other options of tethering. My phone (Nexus S 4g) doesn't like to create an AP network. I can get my kindle to connect to it, but it never gets an internet connection. Any help would be appreciated.
P.s. I've tried every Wifi tether app in the market with no luck.
Thanks
don't know about ics but i'm using zt-180 adhoc switcher from the market
should work for ics too
Zt ad hoc switcher is a no go. I think the WPA_applicant file has changed from the gingerbread builds.

I was looking in the ICS thread and was reading that some ICS user can pick up wifi tether from there android phones and I was hoping someone could tell me how to do so thank you in advance if you can help me
If your android phone is rooted you can download one of many wifi hotspot apps from the market, i.e., Wireless Tether, Barnacle, etc. You can then connect to said hotspot via your KF. If your phone is not rooted look to your providers stock hotspot app, however if you this route you will most likely have to pay an extra premium to use this service.

You can make you phone as a hotspots active if you have data connection agreement with your phone services provider. Check if you have this option in the mobile wireless setting in your smart phone. Please note there is additional cost for data a d you should join a package that fit your need
