i setup my samsung vibrant for wireless tether, my laptops connect without any problem but my tmobile galaxy tab won't pick it up. seems like the wireless tether is invisible to the tab.... anybody can shoot me a fix? thanks!
I believe the Tab, as with all Android devices, doesn't see ad hoc networks. Wireless Tether uses ad hoc. Only 3G Mobile hotspot on VZW uses true infrastructure mode. There are hacks out there depending on the type of phone you have.

thanks for the advice! after i swapped the wpa_supplicant, it's working now
How do you swap it out? I found 3 files with that name. 2 of them have .conf at the end of their names.

Is there a way I can connect the Nexus S to my Droid's Wi-Fi tethering? The NS isn't recognizing the network and won't connect when I type in the SSID. I know it's probably just a simple setting I need to change on the Droid, but I'm not sure which one. Any help is appreciated.

Is there any security on the Droid's tether? Try disabling all security and reconnecting. You should Have to type in the SSID, just select the network like any other wireless connection. I used my Nexus One to give the Best Buy demo unit service when tried it out - worked flawlessly.

No security or anything on it. Perhaps my wireless frequency channel is incorrect; could you tell me what yours is set to on your Nexus One?

Not seeing the option to change Channels on the Nexus One... only configuration options are SSID and password.
You dont see it as a wifi network?

Are you using the tethering function built into Android? It seem that my Droid doesn't support that as my only built-in option is USB tethering (I'm running CM 6.1 stable, so it should be there I should think).
I'm using the Wireless Tether for Root Users application to do tethering on my Droid. It's worked with numerous other devices (iPod Touches, my laptop, even game consoles recognize the network), but it seems that other Android phones in general (I tested some friends' phones; Droid Eris, Droid Incredible, and now my NS) don't see the network and refuse to connect to it.

Nope, and even when I type in the SSID manually, it's like it doesn't exist.

Ah I see. Yes I was using Androids built in tethering function.

Wireless Tether for Root uses ad-hoc to connect. Android does not yet support the ad-hoc protocol. However, the iphone, ipad, and desktop OS's do support ad-hoc.
Also, I believe the nexus one uses native infrastructure mode...that's why you were able to tether with it.

Edit: ^ beat me to it lol
could it be that wireless tether for root users only does ad hoc wireless networks vs native Androids infrastructure mode? I know i tried to tether my work laptop to my vibrant with wireless tether (think it was pre 8 or something) and my companies base image didnt allow connections via ad hoc for our vpn. Maybe android phones are the same? just a guess...

Thanks for the info. I guess I have to either hope they get native tethering working on the Droid or Android gets ad-hoc support in a future update.
I am trying to pick up my Droid 1's tethering but it doesn't seem to come up on my list of networks. Also when I was at a friends house, I could not pick up his wireless either. Anyone know why this would happen?
Android cannot connect to adhoc wireless networks. Your OG Droid is not capable of operating in AP mode and thus uses adhoc mode for wireless tether. As has been mentioned elsewhere you should be able to get bluetooth tethering to work.
Thanks. Don't know too much about tethering. So just change it to Bluetooth instead and it should work?
I have paired (PDA Net) my xoom to my droid x and it says they are using Bluetooth tethering. But it still shows 3G. How do I know which is actually active? Do I need to turn off 3G? How?

What did you do to pair it with PDA Net?
Running 4g on CM7 GB with hotspot on and it works great.

I have just got my hands on an ASUS transformer tablet . Now I thought ok it's wifi only thats fine I can tether it to my little tattoo and use 3g that way.
Problem is I didn't realise that Android doesn't see adhoc networks to connect to them. So I want my wireless tether to work in infrastrusture mode instead of adhoc.
I've been searching and seen this done for other phones but can't seem find a way to do it on the tattoo/click.
Has anyone found a way to do this?
Well there is a wifi tether app on market wich does the job...with that app your tattoo works like AP for 3G network. Also i think that your tattoo must be rooted.

I'm already using it. Version 2.0.7. but it broadcasts in adhoc mode so the tablet won't even see it.
Well i dont know what to say, my laptop work just fine with wifi tether app on my tattoo.
It will do. Mine to because laptops can see adhoc networks.
Or is there a way to enable android native tether instead of using an app. I've read somewhere that works in infrastructure mode.

I have a similar problem too! It seems that nothing but computers can see ad-hoc networks. So, my Kindle, my Xoom, and other smartphones can't access the network through tethering. Is there a way to make wifi work in infrastructure mode?
Nobody else have had such a problem?
Have you tried this setting?
Wireless Tether:
- Install Wireles Tether from market
- Run app
- Press on init "tethering"
- go to "menu" -> "settings"
- Enable "Wifi-Encryption" For safety...
- Change "Passphrase" (13 chars)
- Change SSID if you want
Yes, I tried: that creates a wep-protected ad-hoc network...

I have an HTC Hero(rooted) and my wife has the Samsung Epic 4G(rooted). I have tested both phones with the same WIFI Tethering app and the Galaxy Tab recognizes and connects to my wife's phone...internet wifi works just fine.
When I test it on my HERO...the Tab will not recognize the HERO at all. I know that this works just fine with my laptop. I've tried the wireless tethering app and still no luck.
I have the wireless tether app V. 2.0.7 and the WiFi tethering app V. 3.0...no luck on neither one of them. Wondering why it works fine with my wife's phone and not mine. There was no need to modify anything on the Tab for it to recognize the Epic...but no luck on the Hero.
Any ideas????
I know it can be done.
Thanks in advance.

Search this forum and the Development Forum for Ad-hoc Network support.
The gist is this - your phone (and most older phones) only provides an Ad-Hoc network to tether. The galaxy tab requires infrastructure mode to tether and will require a few fixes that are provided in a thread in the development section to work with Ad-hoc networks.
The Epic will provide infrastructure mode which is why it works and the Hero does not.
The issue is most likely that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not see/connect to Ad hoc networks, which is probably what your phone is broadcasting. If your Tab is rooted. Check out the link below. I followed the directions from the first post and am not able to tether to my iPhone (had the same issue as you prior).

A simpler solution is to use the latest experimental version (3.x) of android-wifi-tether on your phone:

My tab is not rooted yet, but I will do soon enough. Just a little afraid to do so right now. I've rooted quite a few phones so I'm confortable doing that. Just need to read a little more on how to root the tab. I'll take a look at the link you provided and hopefully I can get this thing to work.
Thanks

That's what I thought as well, but my Tab will not recognize my HTC Hero(yes it's an old phone) but my laptop recognizes it with no issue. Hero and Epic 4G have the same wifi tethering app and Epic connects with no problem, but my hero will not. Damn, I want this thing to work.

I have the same problem with Samsung Infuse Phone rooted and had Wifi tethering working fine with my laptop, but not Galaxy Tab 10.1. GT 10.1 didn't even see the SSID of the Samsung Infuse. Not sure what is the problem with SGT 10.1 wifi.
I got v3 to work but only with any password. Does anyone how to fix this?
After doing this WPA supplicant zip thing...will this effect my wifi network(at home) in any way?

That's exactly what my Droid was doing. The new build of wifi tether didn't work for me either. Changing the wpasupplicant (I think that's what its called) fixed it instantly and now my tab can see all ad hockey networks like my phone and printer!

Gonna have to change the WPASupplicant, just thought something was wrong with my Tab. I need to take care of this. Thanks
You can Wifi tether your tab with out root or replacing the WPA supplicant file.
Instead of using Ah-hoc mode, just use Infrastructure mode like regular wifi.
I use the app call Wifi Tether ( just Google it). This app needs root.
Once you install the app.
Go to Setting.
Change Device- Profile- I tested Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy Indulge
Change Setup-Method- chose Softap (master), this will get you Infrastructure mode.
You can set Wifi-Encryption if you want.
Your tab should see your phone now.
Don't forget to donate to the dev.
So EVERY hotspot in the world is in Infrastructure mode? What if you HAVE to connect to an ad-hoc network, then what?
The wpa supplicant method is better because it allows your Tab to connect to BOTH ad-hoc and infrastructure networks. It's not for everyone, but i prefer that method.
You are missing the point.
This only pertains to an individual, his or her phone and the tab. Also, how often does other people share their ad hoc wifi with you. The main point is the is no need the root the Tab, which has the potential to brick. I like to take the easy route first.

Rooting the Tab is the easiest thing in the world, come on. First time I did it all I used was an app called z4root. How hard can that be?
Even without z4root it's dead simple.
But I won't begrudge your intention, to each his own. Carry on.

You can use z4root on the Samsung Galaxy Tab? I'm already rooted just wondering. .

Not if you're using the Sprint version SPH-P100. No root, just rooted ROM at this point.
I use the WPA Supplicant modified method. Works best for me on my Super One Click rooted T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 7" with GB 2.3.3. and Jupiter Overcome ROM.
I use the Wireless Tether App from Muller, Lemons, Buxton. When I'm on the road, I tether my Tab with my rooted Samsung Galaxy Prevail from Boost Mobile with Shrinkage Monthly Unlimited plan. For me it's the best.
I checked the OP's method with a 2nd Super One Click rooted U.S. Cellular Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" with froyo that I have w/o replacing the WPA Supplicant file. Still has original. Could not get it to tether with my phone using "wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk" app. But the app does work with my T-Mobile Tab w/ modified WPA file. The Tab recognizes the "wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk" as Ad-Hoc.
Works great on an unrooted Sprint GT. Thanks for the heads-up
