[Q] Installed the new 4.3 on my i9505 with knox - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I've installed the new official 4.3 rom with knox on my galaxy i9505. Now after KitKat announced I want install this (when they release a rom, AOSP, that fits to i9505 (not the google edition).
I've already rooted my device so it flagged as 0x1.
Is there any way that I'll be able to install the AOSP kitkat 4.4 on my device? (I don't care from the warranty)
I really love the touchwiz 4.3 but the kitkat looks amazing, and it's AOSP - so should work much smoother than touchwiz..
(Sorry for the bad English, I'm not a native English speaker )
My baseband version is: I9505XXUEMJ5

i didn't see yet, but it should release soon..... doesn't it? and I just wanted to ask you that question in order to make that clear...
By the way, a hypothetical question: can i install android 4.3 AOSP right now on my i9505 after the 4.3-knox-enabled update?

AOSP is custom - Yes
but to talk about KitKat is very very early, with the Knox headaches are not clear let alone to talk about something that is not there

And when do you think KitKat will release to i9505? (just a question.. if it doesn't allowed here to ask I'm sorry)
I've seen that the knox is a bootloader. There is no way to burn another bootloader to device? and in general, android should be open source - samsung doesn't pass the law?
and last question, if I'll install 4.3 AOSP to my i9505, can I do OTA upgrade to 4.4 AOSP and make my device to look like i9505G? I've heard that there is no difference in hardware between the two devices.

Look like Google Edition yes, but turn it into one, and to receive OTA is impossible

Ok thanks a lot

What I understood is that if you update to 4.3 manually you won't be able to update with Samsung released 4.4 later OTA. But will we be able to update to 4.4 manually ?

I have the same question. Obviously you can find custom roms etc.. but I would like to convert my i9505 to an i9505G so I can benefit from Google OTA updates too and have a "clean" ROM from Google with pushed updates etc...
Thanks

+1 here too. I really love to have this too. I know there are custom roms out. But having OTA is much more important for me.
Anyone here who can explain how we can get official GE 4.3 on our S4 4.2.2 GT-i9505 ?
Regards,
Manuel
I'm open to correction on this but any 'Play Edition' ROMs at present are custom roms, and will not be set up for OTA.
Whether someone can get this functionality in place... I don't know. That's for a better dev than I.

Its not currently possible, due to different bootloader and partition sizes between i9505 and i9505G. I'm personally looking forward to using the modaco switch feature to switch between google edition and touchwiz rom. There is arguably a lot of Samsung bloatware on the S4, but also a lot of useful features. I feel the Samsung camera takes better photos than the GE/CM camera (felt the same about the camera on my HTC Sensation). The devs working on the S4 do a fantastic job, there isn't really much of a delay between a new release and a ROM being updated or made available when a new version is released.

Ideally I would have liked to flash the low level firmware so the HW is seen as exactly the same as the I9505G one so we could have a Google Edition on the I9505. But I understand that as the HW is not exactly the same this would mean to have a kind of middleware that would make a I9505 look like the I9505G from a HW perspective.
The other solution is to be patient and get the 4.3 OTA from Samsung that we are all waiting for. I understood that this could be released next month together with the new Note 3. I need the Bluetooth Low Energy feature from 4.3 on my I9505.
merci

Which Android version is better for our i9506 : Jelly Bean 4.3 or KitKat 4.4.2 ??

Kitkat
KitKat is better, even 4.2.2 was better than 4.3 slowmo..
The SD card restrictions in KitKat create too many limitations for my liking. Even with root and SDFix, some apps still can't access the external SD card. On top of this, there doesn't appear to be any significant improvement in performance or battery life.
Maybe when someone does a good sammy custom rom based on 4.4.2NNE (would I love an Omega rom right now!) it will be a worthwhile update. In the meantime, if you have 4.3, stick to it. As I discovered to my annoyance, there's no going backwards.
Any team will cook for i9506??It's a shame
In my opinion they are almost the same Sh*******t with few changes.
I'm just using the i9506 since 4.4.2.
I'm rooted, debloated and adfree.
For me the system is fast, stable and handy.
I like it and don't miss something.
PS: SDFIX: If you fixed the ext sd write permission than any app should work...
Are you sure you've done it correctly and being rooted?

I am quite pleased with 4.4.2, my only problem is that at the moment you cannot root without activating KNOX.
For this reason I wanted to downgrade to 4.3 where you can root w/o voiding the warranty.
Anyhow, your post surprised me, because you say that even 4.2.2 was better than 4.3
Do you mind to tell me (us) why you think so?
What is wrong with 4.3?
Should I really stay far from this 4.3?
Many thanks in advance.

I moved since a couple of months to v4.2.2.
So far so good.

[Q] Should I update from 4.3 JB to 4.4.2 KK ?

Hello
I recently got my S4 i9505. I'm planning to root it
I have Android version 4.3
I used to flash costum roms on my s2 but I'm not really planning to do much flashing on my S4. not soon anyway
So as I connected the phone to Kies to make sure the drivers were downloaded so I can proceed with rooting
Firmware update popped up
I'm not sure what the best option for me now.
Should I root now and then I'd be able to flash a costume KK rom? and are there any stable ones that are better than the stock?
Can I use kies to update my rooted phone?
Maybe I should stick with JB 4.3? Which one is better 4.3 or 4.4.2?
I remember facing some issues when I update my s2 back. So I searched for the KK Update for the s4 and some people weren't so happy with their KK update
I know that doesn't represent the majority but still it could happen to me
So I confused myself
What is your advice to me?
sorry for the long post
Also I have an extra question What is KNOX? and do I need it?

First, the most problems in 4.4.2 are fixed, so if you flash the officical, latest firmware of your country you shouldn't have any problem.
An important thing: if you flash a custom rom, your warranty will be set 0x1, that means, you lost your garanty if you flash a custom rom, that's the so called KNOX. You can use knox like a second system on your phone, with all secure data in it, you can only access with a passwort and all datas are locked without this passwort.
Root your phone after the software update if you want to root it.

[Q] Installing 4.4.4 and keeping root and Knox 0x0

Hi everyone.
I received my Galaxy s4 yesterday the c9515L variant and it came with the 4.4.2 version of android. Using TowelRoot I rooted it and now is working fine , It constantly wants me to upgrade to the newest version (I guess 4.4.4) and I wonder if i'd loose the root and if the Knox would be activated once I try to do the root again.
Also I installed Xposed and some modules, did that trip the knox?
Also, Is there any ROM available that won't trip the knox to 0x01 and having more features thatn stock? I guess to install the Rom I'd need Recovery and thus tripping knox...
Sorry for asking so many questions but as you can see I'm new to the SGS4 comunity.
Thanks.
1. Do you mean GT-i9515L? coz C9515L doesn't exist...
2. The update isn't android 4.4.4 for sure.

First of all, my mistake, what I meant was I9515L.
And, If I currently have the 4.4.2 and it wants to make a system update in "your" opinion what would that be? 4.4.2.1?? No? I though so..... thats why I said 4.4.4.
Any information regarding my questions would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Tale a look for example in Sammobile.com your updates and you will know something more of your device. It is likely that new models of Samsung using TW will update directly to android 5.0 Lollipop in early 2015 (but your device no maybe). Press "THANKS" button if the info helped you and Merry Xmas

A few simple questions

I have 7 questions, I will +Thank you for all your answers.
1. I'm still on 4.4.2 [XXUFNB9], is that even the latest KitKat? Since people keep telling me to stay on KitKat, not to update to 5.0.1.
2. Second question, since my CSC is [NEEFNB2] which should be NEE region, that should mean that the latest 5.0.1 via OTA is [XXUHOD7] which was released on 2015-May-01. Isn't that outdated?
Source: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-I9505/NEE/
3. Now if I look at the latest releases, starting from DBT region which is Germany and a lot of others, the latest 5.0.1 for the i9505 is [XXUHOH2] released 2015-September-01. Compared to my NEE region release date, my 5.0.1 update would be outdated right?
4. Last few questions, if I were to update to 5.0.1 via OTA, is going back to KitKat as easy as flashing PDA via Odin including the factory wipe in recovery? Will that trigger Knox?
5. Going back to KitKat from Lollipop I would still be using the Lollipop modem on KitKat, is that bad and why?
Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62947457&postcount=11
6. I've read a lot about Knox 0x1 and there are a lot of weird explanations about it.
Someone use to say is that you stop receiving OTA updates. Others say is that Knox can't make a container? Whatever that means.
Is the only negative thing Knox 0x1 that you lose your warranty? I dont have that anyway, so why all the fuss about 0x1 if it's only warranty?
7. What's the experience on the latest 5.0.1 [XXUHOH2] OR latest for NEE region [XXUHOD7] if someone has it?

The answer to all your questions:
You worry to much. Region is not that important. And who tells you to stay on Kitkat? I wouldn't want to run outdated software on my phone. So just upgrade and you can always downgrade. There are guides in the general section on how to do that. For questions about knox there is a whole thread about it. Also not really important in your case.
Even better would be to flash the CM so you are really on the latest Android version 5.1.1.
Hey,
these people told me not to update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/help/quick-q-update-phone-to-lollipop-t3163097
Thank you for your answer.
I am still open for suggestions if there are any, of not. I'll consider trying 5.0.1 soon and hopefully I'l like it.
EDIT:
I have updated to 5.0.1 [XXUHOD7] just now.
I can report my experience after some usage.

Because for some reason this this one is actually running perfectly, I have no complains yet.
The thing is it is running better than my last KitKat rom, faster in opening apps and smoother scrolling without skipping frames as much.
Battery life? It's repporting 3 days left atm, so I suppose it's the same as it was on KitKat, but will see.
