I have the same question. Obviously you can find custom roms etc.. but I would like to convert my i9505 to an i9505G so I can benefit from Google OTA updates too and have a "clean" ROM from Google with pushed updates etc...
Thanks

+1 here too. I really love to have this too. I know there are custom roms out. But having OTA is much more important for me.
Anyone here who can explain how we can get official GE 4.3 on our S4 4.2.2 GT-i9505 ?
Regards,
Manuel

I'm open to correction on this but any 'Play Edition' ROMs at present are custom roms, and will not be set up for OTA.
Whether someone can get this functionality in place... I don't know. That's for a better dev than I.

Its not currently possible, due to different bootloader and partition sizes between i9505 and i9505G. I'm personally looking forward to using the modaco switch feature to switch between google edition and touchwiz rom. There is arguably a lot of Samsung bloatware on the S4, but also a lot of useful features. I feel the Samsung camera takes better photos than the GE/CM camera (felt the same about the camera on my HTC Sensation). The devs working on the S4 do a fantastic job, there isn't really much of a delay between a new release and a ROM being updated or made available when a new version is released.

Ideally I would have liked to flash the low level firmware so the HW is seen as exactly the same as the I9505G one so we could have a Google Edition on the I9505. But I understand that as the HW is not exactly the same this would mean to have a kind of middleware that would make a I9505 look like the I9505G from a HW perspective.
The other solution is to be patient and get the 4.3 OTA from Samsung that we are all waiting for. I understood that this could be released next month together with the new Note 3. I need the Bluetooth Low Energy feature from 4.3 on my I9505.
merci

This is the site to go to:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
If you register, they even have an app on Google Play that helps handling the updates.
They offer the original Stock ROMs, even by carrier, if possible.
Be aware, that after you flashed one of these ROMs you naturally have to root your phone again.
Since "rooting" is a bit of a Grey area (the manufacturers don't like it, so they make it not too easy to accomplish, but on the other hand, without the community of developers for custom stuff they wouldn't thrive like they do), you are simply not able to make an official update without loosing root.
You can always wait for you favorite custom ROM to be updated, though

[Q] Installed the new 4.3 on my i9505 with knox

Hi
I've installed the new official 4.3 rom with knox on my galaxy i9505. Now after KitKat announced I want install this (when they release a rom, AOSP, that fits to i9505 (not the google edition).
I've already rooted my device so it flagged as 0x1.
Is there any way that I'll be able to install the AOSP kitkat 4.4 on my device? (I don't care from the warranty)
I really love the touchwiz 4.3 but the kitkat looks amazing, and it's AOSP - so should work much smoother than touchwiz..
(Sorry for the bad English, I'm not a native English speaker )
My baseband version is: I9505XXUEMJ5

i didn't see yet, but it should release soon..... doesn't it? and I just wanted to ask you that question in order to make that clear...
By the way, a hypothetical question: can i install android 4.3 AOSP right now on my i9505 after the 4.3-knox-enabled update?

AOSP is custom - Yes
but to talk about KitKat is very very early, with the Knox headaches are not clear let alone to talk about something that is not there

And when do you think KitKat will release to i9505? (just a question.. if it doesn't allowed here to ask I'm sorry)
I've seen that the knox is a bootloader. There is no way to burn another bootloader to device? and in general, android should be open source - samsung doesn't pass the law?
and last question, if I'll install 4.3 AOSP to my i9505, can I do OTA upgrade to 4.4 AOSP and make my device to look like i9505G? I've heard that there is no difference in hardware between the two devices.

Look like Google Edition yes, but turn it into one, and to receive OTA is impossible

Ok thanks a lot
What I understood is that if you update to 4.3 manually you won't be able to update with Samsung released 4.4 later OTA. But will we be able to update to 4.4 manually ?

What firmware is it currently on? You can't flash other phone's firmware package, but you can use their ROMs and depending on what firmware you have you can use AOSP ROMs.

You'll have to upgrade to MK2, either by OTA or ODIN. Then you'll need to root, install Safestrap, and install the NC1 stock ROM using the different instructions in the General thread. I'd look at the All Things MK2 and NB1 index for a list of the different threads you'll need to run a 4.4.2 ROM.

[Q] Where is support for SCH-I545 (Verizon) Galaxy S4?

Hello people, I have been lurking and I was here last year to root my SCH-I545 and I still have the android version 4.2.2 . I know it was impossible to unlock the next version (4.4.2?) so I just moved on and kept using 4.2.2. So where is the official unlock for the latest version for SCH-I545? Is it supposed to be the same as i9500 or i9505 or i9505g? And I want a root of the official verizon version, not cyanogen or watever release group there may be. (no offence). I've tried your stuff but its just buggy sometimes and it feels weird. Sorry I didn't mean to diss the whole community of developers out there, I'm sure people appreciate your hard work and dedication.
But back to the main point, I want to update my rooted Verizon SCH-I545 from 4.2.2 to the latest version, please show me where to go.

Quick Q: Should I update my phone to Lollipop?

Hello,
like the topic name says, should I update my phone to Lollipop?
I've read on older topics there are a lot of issues with stock 5.0.1, like lower battery life, lags and other stuff.
There have probably been a few OTA updates that might have fixed those issues?
What are you're guys experience so far with stock 5.0.1?
I'm still on 4.4.2 btw, so far it works great.
If you have i9505. Is recommend updating and flashing @Albe95 S6 Port which is the best current rom for S4
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
What about stock 5.0.1, yours and other peoples experience?
I just got the phone, so I'd like to keep it stock for now.
No and never update anything your phone in any way!
Update = Problems. Lollipop already proved that.
Hope you have not yet updated !
I haven't updated yet.
So I guess I should stay on 4.4.2 then.
Stay where you are. If you want lollipop go custom or gpe.
I too is still on 4.4.2, might try a custom lollipop

Stay where you are ,Lollipop has battery drain!!!
Thanks for all your input on this guys, I really appreciate it.
Hopefully Samsung will fix it through future updates.

Don't count on Samsung fixing anything in a timely fashion. At this point it's highly unlikely the S4 will ever see Android 5.1.1, especially if Samsung can't even be bothered to update the Google Play Edition S4 to 5.1.1 despite every other GPE phone already receiving it.
If you want a stock-ish custom Android 5.x ROM for your S4, there are at least three decent ones in the I9505 Development section: Imperium ROM, Lollirom, and Albe95's S6 port. Currently I'm using the S6 port as it's the only one of the three that is running Android 5.1.1.
BUMP'ing my old thread a month later because I don't need to create a new one.
Same question, there probably have been a lot of OTA updates after the first 5.0.1 came out on the S4,
is it worth now updating to 5.0.1?
Have the battery issues/lags/whatever problems been fixed?
I'm still on 4.4.2 and I'm tempted to update but I don't wanna get any problems.
The looks and feel of 5.0.1 are nothing if in expense of performance/battery.
Thank you for your time.

No, don't do it. I tried recently. Still crappy (clean install). So I'm back and will stay on KK for this devise. Faster, more reliable and fewer bugs.
DON'T, as others said stay at kitkat or older ,but if need lollipop so badly one of the following (both requires updating to lollipop)=
1.CyanogenMod or cm based ROMs(for touchwiz haters,half stable,recommended=CyanogenMod itself)
2.touchwiz based roms(for touchwiz fans or the people who are trying to be original, sometimes fully stable, sometimes half stable, recommended=able's s6 port or able's lollirom)
