I hope the devs can get a flashable rom going quite soon, I dont care if the whole thing doesnt work I just wanna try it out, probably the same with most of you, no?
God, im excited, what about you guys?

I'm not that excited. I think it's great for this device's development, but I personally prefer the battery life and stability that the stock rom gives us. The official 4.3 will suffice for me until I upgrade to a different phone.

I found the device to be more stable using Cyanogenmod. I also get better battery life. But when 4.3 comes out I will probably go back to stock.

samsung most probably wont officially update the s3 to 4.4 because by the time 4.4 is out for samsung devices, s3 will be out of the 18 months update window provided by samsung.
the hardware wont be at fault over here though.

?? touchwiz? who said anything about touchwiz?
he's talking about the binary blobs of the mali driver. CM needs that too, for smooth animations and the like.
That's the reason why CM 10.2 has laggy animations and CM 10.1.3 doesn't. Same reason for Omni.
We have 4.2 blobs, but not for 4.3.
Exynos
So.. I'm sure the community will release a 4.4 ROM sooner or later but depending on the community rather than Samsung i think that a broad community is necessary to get good results. I was used to a great developer community delivering great ROMs and options for my Samsung Captivate but now i see that somewhat diminished in i9300 because of the Exynos code being closed to devs. Camera being faulty, animations being laggy, etc.
I'm wondering that maybe its time to move from my gs3 to some other device with a Snapdragon maybe and an active dev community. I'm not a dev but I really enjoy their work. Which device do you think its currently one that promises good dev activity? Am I right to think snapdragon is a better choice? In that case, could a, say ATT GS4 with Snapdragon, be a better option?
Thank you!
Nexus 5, i9505 or xperia z1

Hello guys.....
As we all know that Samsung made a huge changes for thier smartphones with jellybean 4.1.2......
One more thing we all get bored with jellybean 4.1.2..... Is it right....???
And what do you think....??? And what changes going to be done in jellybean 4.2.x....... What features going to be add
Will samsung improve more (or) only make minute changes
Did you get any news (or) information about upcoming update or leaks for Jellybean 4.2
So what your opinion on this

I prefer 4.1.x to 4.2.x so I'll likely skip that update if it comes. I'm actually on 4.1.1 now after reversing back from 4.1.2 and I'm happy with it.

personally, i dont really mind when we get 4.2.1. there arent that many add ons that i would consider significant enough to warrant an update.
want lockscreen widgets? most music apps already have them and some of the other apps on the market already do too.
want photo sphere? i dont see how samsung (or other app developers) wouldnt be able to add that themselves to their own camera app.
improved keyboard with gesture typing? we already have that.
multiple users? dunno about you guys but im the only one using my phone. sure, would be nice to lock out friends with a guest account when they borrow my phone, but not a necessity or something i'll use everyday.
wireless mirroring? cant we already do that with allshare?
daydream? not something i'd use since it pretty much stops the device from going to sleep, which will reduce battery life.
4.2.1 is mainly an improvement for those who are using unadulterated aosp and aokp, but for someone like me who doesnt actually mind touchwiz, its not significant enough for me to shout out whoop dee doo.

You folks do know that there has already been a 4.2.1 leak for the S3 a while back. Most likely they will start rolling it out after the S4 becomes commercially available.
The firmware wasn't very stable as it was a development build but it did contain many of the features that ship with the S4.
I imagine the Note2 version will contain some extra stuff.
You can get the S3 firmware from Sammobile.

Yeap, I was told the same by one of the Engineer who works in Samsung.
I feeling bad because i just bought it and this news..Oh man!!!
4.3 is never going to happen.
The Galaxy S2 update proces will stop at 4.1.2 I think. The big problem here is the fact that Qualcomm stopped making drivers for the Qualcomm chip inside some Galaxy S2 variants like the American T-Mobile and Skyrocket variants after Android 4.1.2.
Samsung can only port 4.2.2 to the Exynos variants (because they make their own drivers), that will be the I9100(M,P,T), I777 and Epic 4G Touch variants.
Will Samsung choose to update those variants to 4.2.2 and leave the QC variants at 4.1.2? Or will they keep it simple and stop at 4.1.2 like HTC did with the HTC One S (2 variants one with a Snapdragon S3 which QC stopped supporting and another variant with a Snapdragon S4 which QC still supports)?
An Android 4.3 update for the Exynos variants would mean those American variants will be surpassed by 2 Android versions and that is never going to happen.

Well Samsung made those variants so they should care, the reason for all those variants are all the different bands those carriers want to support. I really hate all the different American variants, Murica before all. Samsung should release just one variant woldwide so they wouldn't have these problems.
But those variants are a good reason for Samsung to stop updating the S2. The Exynos chipset is more than capable to run Android 4.2.2 or 4.3 for that matter so they can't use arguments like the SoC is to slow or RAM is too low. It's kinda convient for them that QC stopped the support.
But all in all the S2 got enough updates. From 2.3.x to 4.1.x is very nice for an Android phone.

4.3 isn't likely for SGS2, but looks like we might be getting 4.4 Kitkat
EDIT: Well that might be a bit premature, 4.4 will have lower requirements than 4.3, so SGS2 will certainly be able to handle it, it's just up to Samsung now whether they want to do a new 4.4 rom for SGS2.
Even if 4.3 Official is released
i will stick with Cyanogenmod
TWz is very laggy
At least I learned something here. Never trust Samsung. Never trust ARM. Never trust Android. And never trust XDA members and their belief that customs ROMs will magically fix everything.

Does this phone really need TRIM? I had 2 devices that really "needed" it.
One of them having the I/O etc issues and etc. Htc One X and Nexus 7. It did not make any difference .
No matter what I do, the Nexus 7 even with the TRIM running, btw read up on the conditions when it will fire away, is incredibly laggy. (And yes everything was tried, factory images, custom roms, custom kernels, setups) Will go for exchange
I would say TRIM is a bit overrated.
4.3 might not be for everyone to look for.
However rumors around 4.4 seem to be nice. I would have nothing against to skip the 4.3 and go directly to 4.4.
If they really cut down on the hungry resources and it will run on lesser devices, newer ones will literally fly

I understand about TRIM but if LG were to ask you that you can only have 1 ROM...4.3 or 4.4 what would you choose?
You can get 4.3 with TRIM or you can get 4.4 with TRIM + other features.
I want LG to skip 4.3 and focus on 4.4 because I want the new features + TRIM. In another 1-2 weeks, 4.3 will be nothing but history when 4.4 will be announced by Google. Everyone will want 4.4 and as much as you trust LG in thinking they will provide a software update for both 4.3 and 4.4, that is very unlikely. The process for a carrier and OEM to release an Android update is a long process and if LG were to go through this process, I want the latest and greatest Android update. 4.3 is very minor and other than TRIM support, I don't really care about the rest of the features.
4.3 Is awful. I kept 4.2.2 on my nexus devices due to the suck that is 4.3. I couldn't care less about an upgrade right now.

anyways be happy you do not have that lag. there are like gazillion theories why it happens... boiling down to ****ty hw ... Once the SD gets full on extensive use the perfomance starts degrading, more and more quickly till the point factory resets wont do nothing...
Anyway enough OT Back to this phone.
You all guys think it that the Nexus 5 will be based on this.
Well I do not wanna pop your bubble.
But as mentioned earlier I had Nexus 7 old one with Tegra 3. And the Htc One X basically same device.
Thinking that we will have as well clones from Nexus 7. Did not happen and I actually do not know if anything or anything that matters came from the Nexus 7 to Htc One X despite being the same Chipset and etc.
Well could have been caused also cuz of Nvidia locking down their sources. But I think Snapdragon is also sometimes not so nice.
Anyways, saying that there will be for sure ports and etc. Till we really do not have the specs black on white, you wont know for sure.
Also there are already differences that might be crucial. So who knows how good the ports will be anyways.
Still knowing all this I ordered it. I would love nothing more then AOSP with Xposed and lets say Gravity Box + Greenify to make me happy

Sure, but I'd expect AOSP roms to show up shortly afterwards. LG based stock one.. who cares. However it would be smart if LG did leverage their development work on the n5 to be the first out with 4.4 on a non-nexus device.
I really don't want to hurt feelings, but seeing past neither 4.3 nor 4.4 coming anytime soon.
Lg will highly updates it's phones once if it suits & that is also about year late. Than forget updates through lg.
So all we need is an update for Note 2 so we can get a TW port. Perhaps this port could be more stable than KK. So the question is, when is the 5.0 official update for Note 2 will come? Are there even rumors for an update for the note 2?
Android Lollipop will most likely be even less hardware-hungry than kitkat. So I see no big problem in bringing it stable to our device.
aosp lollipop - yes, if it will be ported or support for s3 by cm will continue, that would be awesome

Hi!
I don't think that S3 will get Lollipop directly from Samsung (I think nobody expect that), but I expect that will be technically possible, hardware could running it and developers try to port the update for this device.
From Samsung, I don't expect nothing.

You saw a news which is dated at march 2013, are you serious?
There will be no touchwiz based lollipop for SGS3. If we're lucky, EXTREMELY lucky, some exynos 4 device may get lollipop, like Note II got kitkat, and somebody may port it, but this is THE BEST SCENARIO, considering the fact that Note 2 got KK and we didn't, and Samsung policy, we may NOT be that lucky. I doubt that any Exynos4 similar device will make it.
You'll have more luck waiting for CyanogenMod, Omni or similar AOSP ROMs, but be prepared for issues, I already have some sneaky tests going on .
I fear that it will be the KitKat thread all over again with rumors, screenshots of "test reports" and whatnot.

Well, kitkat was made for devices with 1gb of ram. Rumors says that android 5.0 is going to be for devices with 512mb of ram(or even more). So chances are that we could skip kk and go directly to L. But this is based on rumors only.
Not likely mate. As far as Samsung is concerned our device is obsolete.
S3 did not get KitKat. What else for lollipop?

Will it happen :?
Well support stopped at 4.3 and I'm using the latest lollipop ROM with my S3 (via the latest BlissPop ROM). So I'm sure it will happen.

Coming from Samsung? No f*****g way. But fortunately there are many skilled and committed developers at xda who are working hard to keep our device up-to-date. So I'm sure a few of them will update their ROMs to Android M Sources.
The other Question is, if the (old) SIII Hardware is performant enough for Android M. But from what I read in the news, it shouldn't be too resource consuming.
So, if you are running a ROM and are willing to flash a new version: Things are looking good .
Its looks like a tiny upgrade as well so I'm sure the talented devs on this site can make it happen.
Too early to talking about M

I think also......:good:
With aosp source code from Google still a couple of months away, I don't see this happen. Even the talented devs that ported 5.0 to our s3 will probably stop here. We may see more stable 5.1.1 ROMs, but I think that's it.
Let's face it. We have a poorly documented/sourced exynos, and our device is over 3 years old. Its been a good run.

you know that android M is 95% similar to android L , few tweaks and improves under the hood but nothing else so dont be so amazed for this update
Try the latest blekota 4.4.4, note 4 rom, it's really look like the note 4.
Samsung dropped support at 4.3 and will not be updating past it for the s3.
They have newer flagship devices in the S family which have taken over.
Custom roms might though.

On the one hand,we are lucky enough to get android L and the developers may stop. But android M is mostly same as L with a few extra features and tweaks. So,fingers crossed.

It is really nice, looks and runs very good but the problem is that after about a month it started running slow, which is weird because I installed about 15 apps at the beginning and then nothing. I flashed unofficial CM12 and it is ok except camera.

m-for-i9300
i and another popular dev we're working on m dp for i9300.
for now it's very difficult, if we can get a build for sure it will be buggy (no ril, wifi etc.)
anyway: https://github.com/m-for-i9300
Maybe it's possible with custom roms
We all know somebody is gunna port this to our device. The s3 still sells. Its got a bit of development still and cm12.1. Someone will do it.
Still waitingg

Marshmallow?
I think, we get Marshmallow only with customs ROM's like CM12, CM12.1.
Probably modders can port Marshmallow Rom.And also It will be Cm 13.0.I really liked Lollipop cuz the interface looking great and modern.
I agree with some posts, it's still too early to develop android M for non nexus phones. With patience and colaboration, eventually some developer will... develop android m for the S3.
