hotspot for mf9 not working using multiple methods, help!

I need some help. I have a sprint s4 on mf9 and the single reason I wanted to root and mod my phone was for free hotspot. I used to pay the $20/ month for 2gbs and had that discontinued last week right before I rooted.
first I tried motochopper, didn't work. Then I rooted and tried crwrj's mf9 hotspot mod, didn't work. Then I installed negalite using cwm, didn't work. Finally I installed triforce and still no luck. I have wiped the cache and davlik before each rom install. I should clarify, when I say hotspot doesn't work, I mean when I hit the hotspot toggle in system settings it just says that my carrier has not authorized me. Generic message.
I am a noob to rooting as of last week so I'm sure I could be doing something wrong. Is there any suggestions that you could give me as to what I can do to get the hotspot to work? Any help would be appreciated!

btw, both roms install beautifully and successfully and are working great its just the hotspot feature that won't work!

Root using the cf auto root method, chainfire with PC Odin. Then grab the PC Odin tar of oudhs recovery. Then boot into recovery and flash the mf9 hotspot mod zip. That way has always worked for me. I'm on the phone so I can't easily get you links. Cfroot is in the original development section, not the custom roms. Both oudhs recovery and mf9 are in the custom development section. I can't remember if that is what the sections are actually called at the moment.

thanks for sharing, I did root my s4 using the cf root method and odin and then installed the mf9 hotsopt mod in recovery mode. You're losing me when you say to get the tar file from oudhs in recovery - I don't know if I missed that step or what I'm supposed to do there... I'm a noob!
btw, what about the triforce and negalite roms I installed -shouldn't the hotspot work out of the box once installed?

In the regular development section, there is a oudhs recovery thread. In there, you'll find a zip and a tar. The tar is meant to be flashed in PC Odin. When you fire up Odin, put the tar in the PDA slot and flash. Let the phone boot completely between flashes so things can settle and get set up correctly. Any confusions, let me know and I'll clarify further.
I assume you know the difference between download mode and recovery mode on the phone. Root and recovery are done in download mode. The hotspot flash is done in oudhs recovery mode. If this is the first time you are putting oudhs on the phone, when you reboot in the menu selection, it might say something about fixing recovery because the phone wants to flash stock recovery after the reboot. Allow oudhs to fix that. It's not hard, just take your time and read what's going on. If the screen, in oudhs recovery is too twitchy, you can still use volume up and down to navigate and power to select. You'll do fine. Just don't get ahead of yourself. If you're confused then stop and look online for an answer. You'll flash everything in Odin in the PDA slot and make sure the only check box that is checked is reboot phone. Don't move the phone or computer or cable while flashing. An intermittent connection when flashing could be disastrous.

Just to let you know, you can use any custom recovery. TWRP works great also and you can load that through the goomanager app from the play store if you want to simplify things.

I don't remember if that recovery was, but one of the other ones, people were saying they were having problems with it. Some recent update made it unstable in some way.

I had to unroot and go all the way back to MDC. I made sure that each up update settled for at least an hour. When up to MF9, used Odin method for root then root explorer for the mod. The important thing is to make sure that the hot spot toggle is still there after each OTA update. I had to do it twice when I lost the toggle between MDL and MF9.

[Q] Is nuke & pave the only way to update a rooted s4?

Hi,
I have OUDHS-Recovery-jfltespr-1.0.3.3 and CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720 flashed on my SPH-L720, on what was stock 4.2.2
My question is, do I HAVE to nuke & pave (factory reset) to get this to 4.3 and then re-root it?
If so, why? I thought one of the big advantages to rooting an Android was the ease with which you could un-root and return to stock.. I remember having to do factory resets to update iPhones before re-jailbreaking them, what a joy! I was hoping to avoid that here, especially as I'm behind a restrictive data cap for internet (~10GB/mo, which is about 300MB/day, combined up & down).
So... any ideas?

You have to be on a totally stock firmware to apply these firmware updates.So you can be rooted and update, as long as you have no mods applied, like the hotspot mod, etc.
Seems the easiest path if you do have any mods applied (which would be most rooted users, I'm sure) is do a full nandroid backup and TiBu or Helium backup. Also backup anything else from internal memory that might be lost, like Nova settings, etc. Then load the MF9 stock tar via Odin. To do that, follow the directions in the following thread in the section labled "Reverting to Unmodified Stock MDL to update to Stock MF9". Just use the MF9 tar instead of the MDL one:

Ironically, I had just rooted the day before 4.3 came out. The only 'mod' I have is the CWM custom recovery.. I'm guessing that's what's tripping it up?

You will need to install the stock recovery, the MJA update will not install with a custom recovery.

Thanks guys. I ended up installing SAC's 4.1 (based on Android 4.3), after manually flashing the MJA modem firmware.
(Because even after flashing stock recovery, I was getting error 7 or something like that, no clue why, I tried searching a few days, but no dice. The recommendation was to flash non-destructive MF9 stock update over first and then update, so I just downloaded Sac's while I had 4G on the way back from work).
NEW QUESTION: How do I get the updated camera firmware, as Sac's modded stock camera seems not to have it. (although, maybe Sac's camera is in error and the firmware is already updated it just doesn't realize).
I can get a patched camera to not do the popup, but I want the firmware. Any way to extract it from the stock MJA OTA file and flash just that?

Error 7 is normally when your recovery pics up that you are rooted. Or when there is a problem with the updater script in the zip file.
If sacs used the MJA camera as a base for his nodded camera then he should have the latest camera firmware.
If you worry this much about Tue camera you can download a stock rooted MJA ROM and go into system/apps with a root explorer and extract the camera apk. Then go to where the camera apk is extracted to and move it to your internal memory under system apps. Then set permissions and reboot.

The camera supposedly had some improvements, that's why I'm trying to find out. I'd ask in Sac's thread, but I don't have enough posts yet. And, I used SuperSU's uninstall to unroot the phone before trying the MJA OTA... although I did put stock recovery first, IIRC. Perhaps the root uninstall needed custom recovery to work? Anyways.

[Q] Not Booting Into Philz Recov

As the title says, I am currently unable to boot into Philz recovery. I bricked somehow trying to flash sacs 4.3 by stupidly restoring the wrong part of my nandroid backup. Flashed the stock OEM 4.3 MJA and did a factory reset right after. Anyway, when I try to boot into recovery it says "Recovery not seandroid enforcing" and "see warranty bit : recovery" then just reboots into the rom. Can anybody help me out?

Once you flashed stock MJA, you have to re flash Philz and reroot.

I did both of those. I currently have root access and flashed the recovery twice to make sure I didn't do it wrong the first time. I am beginning to wonder if the bootloader changed from MF9 to MJA when I flashed the OEM, which won't allow Philz to boot properly.

I did use Odin... that's what I meant. I did get it to boot once after disabling the Knox bootloader with SuperSU and installing the binaries for CWM but when I tried to reboot back into recovery it starts booting then reboots normally again. I think I'm just going to have to wait for a MJA compatible custom recovery. Gonna stock it out for now.

Im on MJA and using the latest philz with zero problems, also people are having success using twrp 6301, although I would use caution as its not 100% yet, what rom are you on? You can remove Knox with titanium backup, either way philz is rock solid on 4.3, also if making backups on 4.3 you need to go to Nandroid settings and check the selinux 4.3 box before making a backup in order to restore a 4.3 Rom. Also not sure why you are having to install binaries for cwm? Since you are staying stock cool but if you used cf auto root, which you stated you are rooted, you should be able to Odin philz, did you ota? Flash the modem from Unknownforce? @leaderbuilder you have any input man?

On the oem 4.3 rom still because I can't flash. Can't flash because custom recovery won't boot. I think it's because of knox. Where do I go in titanium backup to disable knox? Because I can't get supersu to do it again.

I think you are possibly a little over your head. You must take some time and read through the Stickies, Howtos and original posts. Please.
You can easily root (using cf-autoroot - may have to install Superuser from playstore afterwards) and then put a custom recovery (also easily done by installing GooManager and then selecting install custom recovery CWM or TWRP etc) on stock 4.3 that has knox.
From there you can then change/install whatever recovery you want and whatever 4.3 ROM you choose.
BUT I'd highly suggest you take some time, slow down and read, read a little more then after that read some more before you turn your new phone into a shiny paper weight.

Yeah I'll check around and see if I come up with anything. I'm not particularly new to this if you can't tell. I've rooted and customized 2 different phones, as well as jailbroke, themed, and flashed stuff to my ps3 back when it was possible. I rooted and flashed sacs v4 rom and ktoonsez kernel easily almost immediately after getting the phone a few months ago. I'm currently running a rooted, stable, stock 4.3 MJA everything so I guess I'm gonna wait and see if anything new surfaces. I have a suspicion that something is writing over CWM with the stock recovery when I boot into the rom but I don't know what to do about it. GooManager won't install openrecovery for some reason either, I already tried that. Just stalls at the download page. Thanks for the help anyway guys.

If you can get into download mode there is no reason that a custom recovery shouldn't install via PC Odin.
You can try this.
Grab the recovery .tar Launch Odin (make sure to 'Run As Administrator') place the .tar in the PDA slot and make sure you un-check "Auto Reboot".
Once it installs (Pass) take phone off PC, remove battery.
Put battery back in and then boot straight to recovery - Home button, Volume Up and Power button till you see the very little blue 'entering recovery' at the top left. If you get into recovery just choose the 'restart phone option. Or you might want to step through the Philz menus then back out to the Power Options then Reboot system and then 'fix root' and let it reboot.

Xposed and Safestrap on Lollipop?

However, I had no Idea it would be so hard (impossible?) to get xposed back. Is there any way in which I could install xposed ARM without having a custom recovery on my verizon G900V running lollipop?
I also read an article on another website that said you can flash safestrap with odin, go into safestrap, install anything necessary, and then reflash current ROM? I am not TOO knowledgable with all of this, however I have found my way around all this enough to ensure myself root and all needed features. Any help or information would be amazing.

I was considering flashing the xposed ARM file with flashfire, however I read someone else was stuck in a bootloop who tried this. Would this not work? Is there any method? I was also looking into flash gordon which lets you flash .zip files without requiring custom recovery. Thanks!

Go to the xposed thread and read any comment at all. It doesn't work on touchwiz based lollipop architecture. PERIOD. you didn't need a new thread in this forum to learn that...

I see, is there some way that I could downgrade. I've been looking into that for awhile now to go back to my 4.4.2 but there's a ton of methods and I am not sure which is required for my device. I canno't seem to find a specific method for my g900v s5. Thanks for you're reply, and I hope I can downgrade.

You can go up and down as often as you like. I would Odin the NCG tar from the link below and reroot.
You probably still have safestrap. You could try this first. Go to download mode and Odin the NE9 kernel. When your phone starts booting up you should see the safestrap option to boot into recovery. Boot into recovery, install a rooted NE9 ROM of your choice. Boot back into download mode via safestrap and Odin the NE9 firmware. Let your phone boot all the way up and you should be good to go. Use NCG kernels and firmware-roms if you would rather be on NGC.

If safestrap doesn't show up, Odin the full NCG tar file and reroot your phone.

Thanks so much for your help, the only problem is I never installed safestrap on my phone. So I do not currently have safe strap, or any custom recovery. So i can just use the odin method then, correct?

Yes, sir. That would be correct. Since you are rooted, there is an app called Flashfire you could use that doesn't even require a computer but if you are familiar with Odin that is a good way to go as well.

I have flashfire installed, in fact I used it to upgrade to lollipop. What settings should I use with flashfire to downgrade to lollipop? Do i have to clear cache or anything? What ROM do you want to have on your phone?

Just a normal stock 4.4.2 ROM works fine for me.

Thanks so much! It worked perfectly! I had a problem initially after installing towelroot and xposed and got an error when rebooting the phone called "Process system isn't responding". My phone kept freezing and was super slow because of this. I believe it was due to me restoring contacts from titanium backup. I restored the contacts system app as a whole. I didn't realize that at the time however, and just system restored my phone again, and did everything the same yet didn't restore my contacts, and the message is now gone. I am not running root with xposed on 4.4.2. Your amazing!

[Q] Please Help! Cant Flash Recovery!

Ive been going so crazy trying for about 15 hours total now trying to root and get a custom recovery on my phone, for some reason, nothing will work. I do have alot of experience with rooting and ive done just about everything, attempting to get this phone to flash a custom recovery.

I am currently rooted, but i cannot get a custom recovery. I have just tried this method,

with that tool, however after running it, it successfully flashes the recovery, then boots me into the Odin Mode Download screen with the picture of an android. Same thing with trying any other method of flashing a recovery. Can someone please tell me how to get past this, im so exhausted trying to fix this. I tried factory reseting my phone from the phones settings and even that brought me back to the download screen with a picture of an android. I cant get into any recovery at all! Stock or custom it sends me back to that screen.
How can i flash a custom recovery and get this working? Thank you guys in advance

You're on nj4. Safestrap is the only recovery you're going to be able to use. Read the stickies in the general forum

i installed the proper NJ4 safestrap apk and pressed install recovery, however it still says it is not installed "reboot to recovery" is greyed out. Upon booting into recovery, i am still stuck in Odin mode. Anyway for me to stop odin mode from continuing to come up instead of recovery?.

I would guess the system is looking for stock recovery, and it isn't there any more due to your flashing the CWM OUDHS recovery and/or TWRP. You probably need to put the stock recovery back.

I know and I've been trying to find out a way to do that. Could you help me if that's what I need to do? Once I reinstall stock recovery will safestrap work?

I would suggest that you flash nb1 then nb4, root and install safestrap. At this point, a clean install is your best bet. Refer to this thread in the general forum.

U can get stock recovery back by either flashing the whole stock firmware via odin or extracting the recovery image from the firmware and flashing it by its self via odin I don't know anything about safestrap as I'm on Canadian version some one else can hopfully help u out with tht

I read what you posted and I don't entirely understand. Could you point to me to a download a maybe dumb it down a bit?

You are on NJ4 (I337UCUFNJ4). There is no flashable "whole stock firmware" for that version. There is a flashable whole stock firmware for the NJ1 version (I337UCUFNB1). Also, there is no easy way to "extract the recovery image out of the firmware and flash it by its self via odin." The reason for this is that you need a .tar archive to flash in odin, so if you extract just the recovery, you then need a Linux box, or a Linux virtual machine running on your windows pc to make the tar file from it.
This is why I suggested that you flash the NB1 full stock firmware, and then flash the upgrade to NJ4 from stock recovery, as outlined in the guide I linked.
As you asked for a little more detailed help, I'll try to walk you through following the Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Safestrap Guide.
First, read through post #1 and the FAQ in post #3. Next, you need to decide what version you want to end up with. Let's assume that you want to end with NJ4 -- KitKat 4.4.4. (If you want to end with OC3 -- Lollipop 5.0.1, then the instructions are a little different.)
In post #2, under the section titled NJ4 -- KitKat 4.4.4 expand Step 1 - Odin to stock. The files you need to download are at the top of this section. Follow the steps; they are pretty self explanatory. Part 1 installs full stock NB1, and Part 2 installs the upgrade to NJ4.
You are now on fully stock NJ4. If you want to root and install Safestrap, expand Step 2 -- Root and Install Safestrap. The files you need to download are at the top of this section. Again, the steps are pretty self explanatory.
That's it. If you want to now install custom firmware, you are ready, or you can just stay on stock if you prefer.

Yes and i did everything under the NJ4 Kitkat 4.4.4 section. I am rooted and everything worked except for safestrap. I open it and press install recovery and everytime it finishes it says "state:Not Installed". And reboot to recovery is greyed out. Upon manually rebooting into recovery mode, i am in normal stock recovery.
I cant use the selinux mode changer it says. To root i didnt use towelroot because installing the NC1 kernel disables my wifi connection, and since the phone has no service, i had to use KingO Root. I have confirmed root access using root checker. But Safestrap wont work.
What do i do? Is safestrap not working because i didnt root with towelroot? I assumed it didnt quite matter how i rooted. If it is because of towelroot, then how do i get towel root to work while on the NC1 kernel with no wifi and no cell service?

Update: I found a selinux Mode changer apk on xda and installed it. I tried it and safestrap still would not work and said "not installed". I also reflashed the NC1 Kernel and the same thing happened. I booted into recovery for confirmation.
I guess its maybe because i didnt root with towelroot? But it is impossible without phone service because flashing NC1 disables the wifi. Please reply as soon as you can

I can't help with your current issue with safestrap because I don't own this phone. I have worked on my son's S4, and a couple of others that have come through my hands. I have performed the exact process you just used with no issues.
I would suggest you post your issues in the guide thread where someone who has more experience with safestrap can help.
