Use of the Grip Sensor - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

Hi everyone,
i just went through the *#0*# test with my Note.
And i noticed our Note 10.1 2014 has the same good old grip sensor installed the old Note 10.1 has. It triggers when you hold your note on the left side.
I did a quick search for "grip sensor" in google play and found nothing. It seems like no app uses this great sensor build into our notes.
I think this is mainly the case since nobody even knows about it.
So i start this thread now to solve this.
Do you have suggestions on how we could use the sensor?
Can someone write an app that uses this sensor? - or integrate it in an existing app
Feel free to post suggestions and your thoughts about it

Yes, but this doesn't answer the question: What does it sense?

I have a case that covers the sides, does that make the sensor useless?

Hmm it senses the electromagnetic field of your hand perhaps?... im no expert
but it even works if you hold your hand within a 1cm range behind the note. You do not have to touch it.

Nope it works through covers and even through thick cotton.
But try it yourself by dialing *#0*#

I have to add to what one of the previous users posted. This still doesn't answer what it does. What does it trigger? What could it even be used for?

it seems like it triggers nothing... perhaps samsung knows what... but its intresting that they still have the sensor build in "without" using it.
it could be used obviously to detect if you have your device in your hands..
.
You could for example try to use it to hold your device awake while holding it... but i cant say if this works without trouble...
also you could use it as a "button" - for any function in any app.. hmm in games... you have to be creative i think xD
But finding usecases for this sensor is also the reason i started this thread. So try it out with *#0*# and feel free to post suggestions

I ve been trying to turn the screen off & on when you open & close the flip case. Found that the grip sensor dustinguishes the open case from the closed... but how to use this to trigger the screen to turn on & off, I ve no clue.... any help d be appreciated.

It is on every samdung tablet

actually the two lines at the bottom of the device are the grip sensors.. when u cover it it will vibrate when u r testing the GripSensor.. but dunno what is the purpose of it

not only from the left side, actually it will trigger when you cover one of the lines at the bottom of the device, but dunno why they are used for

Its used to block out your hand when you are writing on S Note so you dont accidentally hit the back key with your palm.

Use of grip sensor
From everything I've read the grip sensor is to detect if the device is in a case/cover but as to what cares about case detection is another thing, perhaps Samsung's OS uses it

Maybe it's used for the On Body Detection lock for Smart Lock in Security option?

What about left handed people..?

Maybe Google's smart-lock uses it for the "on body recongition" because when I set my phone on the table it stays locked and when I slap my hand on the geip sensor (where the battery is) it unlocks.

Grip sensor in my note 5(SM-N930G0) is always on.screen never turns blue when i perform the test.
and due to this reason phones battery performance is very low.
Does somebody know how to fix this.
Thank you

[Q] [HELP!] Have I damaged my screen?

Hey all,
I received received my LG Nexus 4. I don't know if I may have damaged my screen but hopefully you guys can help clear up my queries.
I've been trying on screen protectors and my case, I don't know if maybe I've damaged it. But, one thing that has lead me to believe this is when I start up Nexus 4, during the Google screen at the top right, there is a bit of light exposure.
Basically, I would assume that during the Google screen at boot up, the whole screen would be black right except where it says Google.
Mine has a bit of faint white light on the top right corner.
Could anyone help clarify this for me?
Appreciate it, thank you!
I'm assuming that on most Nexus 4's that around the Google logo at boot up it is pitch black. But, others with Nexus 4's please check on boot up at the Google screen around the top right edge, do you also have a white/faint tint in the corner?
Are there anyways to check this? That the touchscreen is still functioning in the corner? Am I worrying too much about it? Is there a way of testing the screen?
Is your case still on the device? I'm not sure which one you're using, but it's possible that it may be too tight for the Nexus 4, which is causing pinching of the touchscreen.
You're right, at boot, the screen should be pure black, save for the Google logo and that unlocked icon (for unlocked bootloaders).
You can check if it's still registering touch feedback by going to Settings > Developer options > Show touches. Then try touching that area and looking for a white circle. Or simpler, you can pull down the notification shade from the upper right edge.
If it's still in warranty, maybe you could have it returned too.

I'm using a Ringke Fusion case, it's brand new. This was yesterday I noticed this on the screen, I was a bit annoyed after wasting a couple of screen protectors getting it on, hopefully when I go home and look at it today it looks pure black but I doubt it. I will try out the methods recommended.
@mlag: Surely I couldn't have broken it? Everyday people must put these phones into there jeans or tight trousers and it must put some pressure on the screen. As I said yesterday I was a little frustrated after going through many screen protectors trying to get it on properly. Hopefully today when I switch it on when I go home it looks better.

So I've established that light bleeding on the Nexus 4 along the top of the screen is quite common. After reading from this thread below.

Now can anyone tell me how light bleeding is caused? I'd appreciate it, thanks!
Its the display itself when made, you can't cause your phone to get light bleed at least I don't think. I also have a little on the top right.

Thanks for your response mate in both threads, I read the other one and I agree with you. It doesn't bother me, it is only because I switched on the new phone yesterday I was just playing with it as I haven't got my new SIM to use it yet. And, I noticed at the top on the right there was a very faint light bleeding, it isn't that noticable.
I will carry on using it as it is.

[Q] Anybody seen this screen?

I bought this S4 9500 off ebay second hand. When I switch it on the light on the screen comes on nothing else and switches off after approx 3 sec - no boot up etc. . When I press on/central menu botton +volume up I get this screen. Note it displays upside down. When i choose any of the options it seems switch off. Certainly does not respond any further.
The charging plug has been broken by previous owners - can this phone be saved?
Thanks for your help

It is also pretty easy to tell that the phone in that photo has an LCD display due to its backlight rather than OLED.
There is an app in the Play Store called, "Genuine Galaxy S4" (I cannot link it here as I have not posted enough yet for linking to be enabled on my account) It's very easy to find. It will confirm it's authenticity and I'm sure you could send kind of photo of the screen to eBay
Hope this helps

Really.
So the button is not completely smooth, like the volume rocker switch is?
The light is reflecting somehow at the point you see the dot. I've added a second photo, that shows light reflecting differantly.
I thought at first it was a power led or something?
If you run your nail down the button, does it get caught in the hole or run smooth across it?
Thanks again.

Using your iPad, you've obviously not used other manuafacturers who push off design issues as 'by design'.
After having the device for a couple of days, I am glad I checked.
There is no "hole", the power button has a textured finish that radiates outward from the center of the button, which is why it looks like there's something in the middle of it. If you run your fingernail across the power button, you will notice that the entire button has that textured finish on it.

Screen brightness not work after screen replacement

Hello
I replaced my Galaxy note 3 screen, everything is working good. But it seems I lost the brightness. It is on a high brightness and does not go down, even when I put auto. I need to lower the brightness, because of saving batteri and for a better reading to my eyes.
Do you have any solution? Is it a hardware or software issue?

No actually I didn't try a factory reset, should I do that?
I don't know how much battery power the app will use. When ever I had to replace a screen, I just looked for a phone with broken internal components and a working screen.
Try a factory reset but make sure you have a backup of your data.

Have the same issue with samsung s3, Everything works fine except the brightness won't budge, the light sensor is working fine. I checked with sensors multitool and it responds so there is no question of sensor being blocked or damaged.
I agree that with 3rd Party replacement Screen, Samsung just doesn't want to work, I would have gone for another device for the price I paid for the replacement display but I didn't thought of it at that time. anyways, Samsung sells crap, I have seen so many users having issues with their displays, even the newer ones. I have stopped investing in Samsung anymore, lost trust, feels like been betrayed with the one that I fell in love.
Auto brightness often doesn't work with any 3rd party screens on any phone.

Galaxy S8 G950FD magnetic sensors out of calibration

Hi
i got 2 brand new S8 G950FD and i got the same problem with both
tge magnetic sensors "compass" keeps losing calibration.
this becomes very annoying when using Google maps onfoot everything is upside down .
recalibrating the sensor is always successful but for some reason it doesn't stick for long even when using high accuracy location settings
I'm not sure if the problem is with Google maps compatibility with the S8 or with the sensor itself
anyone having the same issue ?
does the calibration rest automatically when going to the sensor app (*#0*#) ?(even though I'm going to the sensor app becomes the map is upside down )
thanks in advance

make since but i don't have any metal in the case, and it does calibrate
I've got exactly the same problem. I never thought that a protective case could be the problem, however, I'm using the Samsung original clear case and it does recalibrate...but it's very annoying because you can't rely on your compass, it will abandon you without warning.
Has anybody found a fix to that? Is it hardware related?
