How do you get around a battery pull? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I pre-ordered the Sprint G2 variant & am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. Earlier today, after flashing a new beta kernal on my Note 2, it decided to freeze & lock up. In such a predicament, typically my last resort is to pull the battery & reboot. It made me wonder: Not having previously owned a phone with a non-removable battery, what are one's options with the G2 in such an instance?

Hold the power button

This doesn't always work on other phones with that functionality. How is the G2 different?

It is my understanding that this is a forced action with non-removable battery phones. It is hit or miss with removable ones though.

Yes it does. it's like a kill switch for the battery. no matter what fails, holding that or specific button combination will kill it and do a hard reboot.

Umm... no, it doesn't. As I said in my post above, my Note 2 has this hard reset functionality upon the long press of the power button. I can tell you from personal experience that there are certain instances where

Oops, hit submit by accident. Anyway, as I was saying, this doesn't always work with my Note 2 and other removable battery devices that I've had freeze up in the past. I'm wondering if it may be custom ROM/kernel related on those devices but again they all had the capability of a removable battery. Not trying to be argumentative, I just know that the long press of the power button hasn't always worked for me in a freeze/locked state on those devices.

there is no way to remove the hold power button function, as it's buried deep inside the phone and is non-reliant on processes or the android system

***For those who are experiencing freeze ups***

Hello people, I thought I would inform you all of a much better and effective method to deal with your phone freezing. Many of us are using custom kernels such as nemesis2all's OTB or imnuts peanut butter jelly time in which have a tendency to freeze our phones due to the overclocking/undervolting. Or, we are on JT's new CM7 mtd or Andmer's GB MIUI and our screens will turn off and nothing that we do will turn them back on. The natural reaction to this occurrence is to take the back off the phone and pull the battery out. But, this is not good for it to be abruptly pulled in the midst of supplying power to your phone. Not to mention the severe battery drain that comes along with doing this, as I'm sure many of you have already noticed to be the case. No matter what rom/kernel you are on and no matter how frozen your phone is, if you simply hold both the volume up and volume down buttons and the power button at the same time for about 10 seconds, your phone will do a hard reboot. Problem solved without doing harm or damage to your phone and without excessive battery drain. This method even works for CM7 MTD/GB MIUI MTD. This is not the same thing as the three finger method that you are warned not to do with these roms. This method will lead to overall better battery life and phone life. Not to mention, a lot less frustration.
I think just vol UP + power works, but either way.. it's a useful trick to know!
And especially helpful if you have a case on

Good to know. I broke my case by taking it off and on so many times. It's still useable but this will prevent further damage, and save me some time.

Indeed. I never do battery pulls personally.
verizon techs have had me do battery pulls a couple different times lol.

Yea, but not while the phone is on and in a frozen state with a steady stream of battery power being supplied to it, I assume. That is very different.

Power on but not frozen... but I agree its not good to pull battery in frozen state... volume up and power button is what I do in that situation. My SF has only froze two times and that was from overclocking... not very stable over 1200 on the stock rom. Srry hope my last post did not offend, I meant as verizon was dumb for having me pull the battery with power on!

It's what I use as well, power+both volume buttons does nothing for me, I think technically power+volume up is a soft reboot, but, it works.
I will use this next time... My phone froze up this morning. I thought I was going to have to pull the battery and just as I was tapping the battery out of the phone I saw the bootlogo. When I put the battery back in my /data was gone. Phone would boot, but there was no data partition. It was toast.
Had to Odin back to stock and start all over. My last Titanium Backup is from more than a month ago. I have a Super Manager backup from ~ a week ago. Will give it a shot.

Very true and not a big deal, most phones will be going to this. It is completely new battery tech too. Lithium Polymer instead of Ion. Much longer lasting, so 2 years of trouble free use should be no problem. Hell, Im going on 3 years with the original battery.
omg that is worst thing , if the phone freeze we need to wait untill battery die. if we install custom rom and it wont start we need to wait untill battery die to enter recovery image ,

No, like the HTC One X it will have a "kill switch". Which is usually holding power + vol down or similar.
I'm sure you can power it off by holding down the power button if the phone freezes.
People thought the N7 battery wasn't replaceable until they started popping off the back and it was just attached with a connector.
For all we know, those two Torx screws near the microphone will allow us to remove the back.
PS: Stay in school, james300.
This wasn't that hard to find.

Bootloops

Quick question: what happens if you had a nexus 4, and one day you flash an unstable kernel, and you get a boootloop? There's no battery to pull out, so what would you do?
Sent from my awesome Nexus S
As far as I know you can hold power for 5-10 seconds and the phone will reboot, and then with the correct volume key it will enter recovery/fastboot/whatever.

For phones with non removable batteries there is always a button combination that triggers a hard shutdown.

HTC One X: Hold power 10 seconds, reboots, press volume down and you enter recovery.
HTC Desire GSM: Power, Volumen down, Trackball pressed.

MK808, Is it safe to leave plugged in?

Hi,
I have an MK808 Stick PC that i'm using as a SmartTV adapter for my TV to play content on local and internet network. I read in the booklet that it is not recommended to leave it plugged in for extended periods, but is kind of inconvenient where it is located to keep plugging in and out all the time. Is it safe to leave it plugged in all the time? Is anyone doing this now? If not, anyone have an alternative idea?
have left mine plugged in for nearly 2 months now, if you touch the stick its cold, so doesn't overheat.
Yup. Mines been plugged in for a while.
I replaced the power supply with a 2A unit and I have no problems playing PS and N64 games. In fact, my old LCD 32" TV is giving me more fits then the MK808.

If you're really worried about it you could consider a smartstrip type surge protector for you TV setup so the miniPC powers up and down with your TV.
http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Strip-Protector-Autoswitching-Technology/dp/B0006PUDQK#productDetails
Or a remote controlled power strip like this one from Belkin:

Just some ideas.
Thanks everyone for the replies, puts the mind to ease. I have left it plugged in since I started this thread (barring power outages) and so far so good. I also got an RC11 air mouse+keyboard and it has a power button on it. I assumed it was for the remote, but when holding it down it brings up the stock android shutdown/reboot screen. Just thought it was worth mentioning, haven't see that said anywhere else yet.
I have been leaving mine powered by my ROKU's USB port.
We will see how it does with my 1st (what appears to be stable ROM: Stock + Goodies http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2070390), flashed this morning...

As long as you don't forget to turn it off, you should be fine. I see no reason for that behavior to harm the device.

I am no expert, but what does it hurt if you pull power while it is in the GUI?
When we pull batteries on locked up phones, I have yet to see ill-effects.
This is just speaking of the following devices: D1 x2, D2 x2, DroidX, Intercept, Optimus Slider, Sidekick 4g x2, and Relay 4g...
I understand Dalvik might get corrupted, and maybe cache, but couldn't you just wipe it? While running WiFiKill, a SK4g sometimes would lock up, and I could either restore a backup, or clear both caches to stop boot lock-up.
How I understand it:
Writes are only done when you select a setting, open an app, etc... unlike Windows that does a bunch of crap in the background, and never stops licking drives/cache/etc.
Enlighten me.
It is not safe. It will start acting up and eventually die. That is why there is a power button in the status bar, so use it!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
It'll probably be fine for a year or more, but eventually the heat will degrade the board and components and cause it to malfunction, by which time it'll be obsolete anyway.

a co worker has a s8 that died currently has no led when plugged in to charge

The screen is black but it flickers in random places but only for a millisecond can not reboot even with power+vol up +bixbi
Laptop does not see it
anyone have any idea of what to do
he has tried different chargers, cord, wireless charging, none work no LED light
He started having issue right after going through TSA at the airport scanner, probably not related
Has your co-worker's phone come back on? I think this may become more of an issue than just a few phones. This is the third I've run across, in the same basic time frame, all in December 2017. Mine was on NYE and I had been working in the morning with my phone, put it in my pocket (loose fitting, pajama/lounge pants), and later pulled it out to use it again. It was off. I thought maybe I had somehow hit the power button while in my pocket, but it wouldn't come back on. No extreme temperatures and no forewarning of any kind... After researching how to get it turned back on and getting several misdirections, I got it to come back on the next day by pressing and holding the POWER button, the VOLUME UP button, and the BIXBY button simultaneously until the phone vibrates and comes back on.
~~~~~~~~~
EDIT: I didn't catch that you had already tried this process. Do you know if this was the first time they have had this issue? Did they get the phone going again with another method, or are they still trying to get an answer? Obviously, I am very interested to hear how this turns out for them!
~~~~~~~~~
I would highly discourage anyone from disabling the Bixby button or setting it to "No Action" on the phone. If the phone dies again, and you have already disabled it, you will not be able to perform this restart. I am trying to find a solution to this very situation right now. My phone went down, dead as a doornail, after I had recovered it once and disabled the Bixby button. I had no idea it would die again, for no apparent reason, since it has always run perfectly since the day I bought it. When I tried my restart method I described above, it did nothing. Of course it did nothing, because I told the Bixby button to take no action!
I'm just trying to make sure that no one else has to go through this... If anyone knows of a solution to re-enable the Bixby button when the phone is OFF, please post here! I'm desperate to get my phone back!!

Thank you for your reply! I'm really trying to fix this without having to spend a bunch of money. I don't have the protection plan from my service provider (thanks, Mr. Salesman for not adding it!), and I didn't catch it in time to get it after the purchase. The battery has not been allowed to go completely dead for more than two times since July. I try to keep it charged between 20% and 80-100%. I don't leave it on the charger overnight (anymore) and have been vigilant to minimize the draw on the battery using Greenify and keeping an eye on the device maintenance.
I will go to the home screen and check it out though, so thanks for the heads up!
