4.2 vs 4.3 data speeds - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember hearing that when people upgraded to 4.3, their data speeds started to slow down. Is there anything showing which radios are faster than others?

Try each individually and check the signal strength and speedtest to find out your self.

Well holy hell, I was using Carbon 4.3.1 with the stock radio and with Franco 193 and only getting around 1mb download speed for some reason.
IN THE SAME LOCATION
I switched to Carbon 1.8 which is 4.2.2, with Franco 165, and a hybrid kernel (with LTE enabler, but switched APN from LTE to GSM) and I was getting 15mb down, for some reason same speed with LTE only and GSM only.
Not sure why that is, I'm in Kansas City, which does have LTE for Tmo, but whatever, I think this proves my point.

Well if you're speed was low on LTE then you just didn't get good LTE signal, that's the problem, you just had to disable LTE. When you flash a rom, it doesn't flash a baseband so you are using the same baseband, just without LTE enabled. Doesn't have anything to do with OS versions (you would think if this was an issue it would have been an uproar over the internet.)

There were a lot of Nexus 4 owners complaining of slower data speeds after the OTA to 4.3, just google "Nexus 4 data speeds 4.3".
Also when I was on 4.3 it was all stock, there isn't an LTE fix for 4.3 I don't think. So yea, I was updated with the newest baseband (radio) and it was just really slow for the past week. In my specific case, the baseband/OS version does have something to do with it.
If I can go from 4.3 at 1mb/sec to 4.2.2 at 15mb/sec in the matter of a few minutes by flashing a few things, then I'd say there was a problem.

I had the opposite experience. Going from 4.2.2 to 4.3, my data speeds went from never topping 1 Mbps to between 3 - 7 Mbps on the stock radio. I also still get the better speeds with any of the hybrid radios I tried on 4.3.

I would like to try some radios to find any differences.
Which would you suggest for stock 4.3 with Franko kernel?

There are hybrid radios or LTE enablers for 4.3? Where? I've only seen the thread for 4.2.

they're in the thread marked "hybrid LTE radio". All radios work for all versions of Android

Network gsm signal keeps dropping

Hello I have been having an issue where when connected to wifi and on gsm/Lte in the testing menu the gsm Signal drops to no bars and I'm emergency calls only. When I change to wcdma preferred it's okay. When wifi is off its also okay. I have not changed anything for months apart from dling the latest Franco kernel nightlies. I'm on Rogers from Canada. I don't think it's a network thing since when wifi is off I get Lte

Probably a kernel issue. Find a version that works and stick with it instead of doing the nightlies (which are prone to have things break).
It's not the kernel, I put the stock one back on and the same issue. It's been rainy here the past couple days, I wonder if that plays in.

Maybe something to do with how you setup LTE since the phones really not meant to have it. Maybe a good place to look is in the thread specifically for LTE in the General Section, its pinned to the top of the section.

[Q] Cannot get T-Mobile LTE enabled at all

info about my phone:
baseband: .33 right now
ROM: this one at the moment.
also tried this one, this one, and this one
also, its the new white nexus
what I've done so far:
I've tried this on the .33 baseband.
I then found these two zips (1 and 2) to help automate the process a bit, and use those to try baseband .24 and .27 with no change.
then I tried the instructions on this site
and finally, I am now on this rom I mentioned above, which is supposed to have everything done already...
I Know for a fact my area has LTE, as my roommate gets 4G on his S3 every day.
does anyone see anything I might be doing wrong?
Is your roommate using LTE with T-Mobile?
Nexus 4 only supports LTE band 4.

did you update the APN to fast.t-mobile.com? I can't tell in specific so ill just give you a quick run down.
On multiple devices i've done:
1) flash broadband
2) clear caches/factor reset
3) flash AOKP (or CM 10.1)/GAPPS and clear caches
4) flash franco kernel (not necessary but i prefer it) and clear caches.
5) update APNs
6) change to LTE/GSM in phone info settings.

T-Mobile LTE/Older Radios with 4.3

Anyone find a fix for the audio issue yet? If so please share. If not, I'm sure a fix will be out soon?
The only thing missing for me while on 4.3 are those awesome LTE speeds that I honestly can't live without anymore (especially upload, upload speeds on hspa are garbage).
Thanks!
I understand there is a new radio with 4.3. What version is showing up on your phone? Does anyone have a pointer to release notes that show you details of what has been changed in 4.3, particularly with the radio?

OP wants to use <.33 for LTE. Radios newer than .33 has LTE disabled.
So thats why he doesn't want to use .84 (that comes with 4.3)
There is no fusion fix yet.

does in-call audio work fine with H and H+ on the newer radios?
.27 or .33 is needed for LTE however, the .84 radio hasn't been out long enough to determine if LTE can somehow be enabled. Time will tell, Google has surprised us with today and how it's turning out.
For now, stick with what is known to work...

It doesn't have to be out long enough. If the radio has LTE disabled, its disabled. You can't workaround to enable LTE on a radio that is compiled with it disabled. Its a closed source radio just like all of them.
With 4.2.2, using the old radio with an audio fix allowed for us to keep the LTE active. Does this still work work 4.3?

[Q] Get LTE speed on cyanogenmod running on Galaxy Sr

So I have a Galaxy S4 Sgh-i337m (Canadian version) that have a custom recovery(clockwork touch 6) and is rooted. On that phone I have cyanogenmod 10.2 and I've been trying to get an LTE speed without success. I've seen the posts that tell me to change my apn but it haven't work. Currently when I switch data on I either get 4G or H+. I made speed test and the maximum I got is 10MBPS normally it should be around 30 to 75MBPS. So can someone help me get LTE speeds here's a photo of my current APN?
Could be a bunch of issues. Is the network mode set correct? I have noticed at times it is set to 4G to save battery. I have had times after flashing a ROM not connecting to the lte towers until after making a call. Another fix is resetting to default in apn.
Sent from my Nexus 10
Unless they've added an LTE symbol...on CyanogenMod 4G means LTE.
On touchwiz when it displays 4G its pretty much H+, Samsung just likes to make it look better
However you are right...your speed tests aren't lte speeds

When you see 4G on the status bar go to settings >about device>status. Network type should say umts% for 3g, hspda% for hspa+ or lte% for LTE (The % represents a frequency). Then you'll know for sure.

Getting ready for 4G?

HI, the three network in the UK is rolling out 4G this weekend, what rom do I need to flash my nexus 4 with to get it working ???!!....I wan't super fast lol !!!!!!!
I think it's only starting in like 3/4 cities if your lucky enough to live in one of the cities. Also nexus 4 only supports one band on 4g if your also lucky enough for three to be using the supported band.

itll work on the n4 only if its band 4 lte, and no other frequency for lte. and its not about flashing a rom, its about flashing a hybrid radi, having the right apn, and changing the phine info to lte/gsm. there are threads that explain how to do it.
Yes I live in London.....but since updating to the latest 4.3 I can no longer select 4g LTE in the service menu. How would I find out if three is using the correct band !????

it goes back because you need to use either the .27 hybrid radio or the .33 hybrid radio. google disabled lte for 4.3, and you cant enable lte in the settings unless you are using one of the hybrid radios.

nice rationalization, but not true. the chip works great, everything works. and since switching over to lte permanently, ive been seeing 6-7 hours screen on time regularly. imagine this, when you download things it takes time for it to finish downloading, especially large files. the slower data speed, the longer it takes. the longer it takes, the more battery is wasted. on lte, i average about 30mbps download speed, so downloads finish in seconds. so less battery is wasted. i download 2gb games from the play store in about 13-18 minutes. the newer lte chips are much better on battety than the old days, better than hspa+, hspa, 3g, and 2g.
How can that be possible ? The LTE chip in the nexus 4 has no antenna or amplifier :/ hmm I'm baffled

Battery life is the same with LTE enabled. My N4 has it enabled my wife hasn't let me to it to her's yet and our battery life is the same, but my data is much faster than her's. I get LTE signal with my N4 in the same places as I do with my Galaxy Tab 2. So I would say it works perfectly fine. Yes I am on T-mobile in case anyone was wondering.
3 UK is going to use LTE band 3 and 20 only, so the nexus 4 will not support it (unless Google is going to release a Nexus 4 LTe version, which is pointless because you should get the Nexus 5 anyway.)
