[Q] Duplicate files - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a big question, I copied a backup of the ringers and notifications, from my old device to my new note 3, the question that I have is that I see two files named notifications, one of these appears in the phone storage, and the sungo on this route, phone storage >> medium >> audio >> notifications.
can someone tell me the difference between these two.

memory stick folders?

Hi,
I'm eagerly waiting for my X1 (2 month wait ) and I have already bought a 16 gig sd card to put music and bits on.
So I can transfer my music over can someone tell me the folder names/structure for the memory card so I can create the right folders and not waste my time.
Thanks
You can create whatever folders you like. Everything is up to the user.
I would advise to make a Program Files folder though. Although the first app you install on the storage card should create one for itself, you never know.
I suggest you make the following folders:
-Music: For your MP3s and stuff
-Pictures: For your pitures. Note that the camera will put the pictures in /DCIM/100XPRIA. Haven't found a way to remap this... (That actually works).
-Software: CAB-Files for all your software so you have them whenever you need them. Make sure you get CAB-Files of the software you're using, not ActiveSync installers that have to be run on your PC.
-Notes: It is intelligent to have Windows store your Notes on the MicroSD card. You have to make this setting manually.
-Movies: For your movies if you intend to watch them
More folders will be created automatically, such as the programs folder mentioned by orelsi, 2 folders for Windows Media Player and Inboxfolder (If you choose to store Emails on the storage card). Notice that if you plan to use a navigation software, it will most likely create a folder in the storage card root. Sometimes even multiple folders. I think TomTom quite sucks regarding this. So in order to keep your "real" files apart from any Settings/Navigation Maps/etc, you may want to create a folder named Files or something, that holds all of the folders in the list above. This makes administration of your files a lot easier but it can slow down access times because you always have to go to storage card, then choose the folder, then choose the category and then the file. Of course this depends on your setup. You can easily create a direct shortcut to that subfolder.
One more thing: Regularily check your MicroSD card with Windows for faults. I find there are problems with this quite often and you can lose data easily.
Cheers Guys

Reference Page for Folder Structure in HD2

hello everybody,
i am searching here for a while and couldn´t find any helpful webpage or forum thread here that shows me, where are the standard folders located ( registry settings ) in WM6.5 or in special for the HTC HD2.
i would like to re-arrange any folder for media files ( ringtones, mp3-music, videos, documents, ebook and so on....)
to an easier structure in \\storage card and saving memory/space in mydevice
for that reason i´d like to know where are folders for what reason of standard-copy paths in \\mydevice and \\storagecard to erase un-needed things and avoid duplicating
the goal is to have easier folders to locate files
like
\\strorage card\Pictures
\\strorage card\Videos
\\strorage card\Music
\\strorage card\Ringtones
\\strorage card\Documents
and make sure that standard applications use that new paths for managing
i think i am not the only person who is interested in that, otherwise sorry for disturbing
thank you
PS
Everything you mentioned happened to be under \\My Documents. They are part of file sync to Windows.
It is a bad idea to place ring tones on SD card. It probably won't work.
thanks for that info.
that was indeed my intention also to change ringtones to storagecard. i am aware that didnt´ work , but with changing reg-keys maybe..any idea where they are ?
Yeah, don't put anything on the storage card that your device might need at any given time. Even if you never remove your card, it won't always be available when needed. For instance, when your device wakes up from an incoming phone call, it can't access the storage card right away since it may take a moment to activate the reader. Therefore it might not be able to use a ringtone stored there.
For the same reason, I wouldn't redirect the "standard" locations to the storage card through a registry change if I were you. You never know how the device will react if it wakes up and doesn't find its "My Documents" folder right away.
Other than that, it doesn't really matter where you put your media files: most of the built-in applications look for them everywhere. So if you want to save internal storage space, you can move most media stuff to your storage card without redirecting the default folders.
For music, I'd say go for "\\strorage card\Music", since that's where music files are automatically stored when you sync with Windows Media Player on the desktop.
For pictures, you might want to use "\\strorage card\DCIM\100MEDIA", since that's where the camera puts new photo's; but "\\strorage card\Pictures" will work just as well. HTC Album will pick up pics anywhere you put them. You can even choose which folder to display in the Sense tab. From the Sense tab, just go to > "Album" > "Albums", pick the one you want, then > "Menu" > "Set as favorite".
As you can see, these will work without redirecting the default folders to your storage card. If, however, you want to try anyway and don't mind the risk of experimenting, the content of this registry key looks promising:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Explorer\Shell Folders
Good luck!
If you want to change the location where the camera stores new pics, you might want to look at this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Pictures/Camera/OEM/PictureLocation
But again: I haven't tried this, so use at your own risk!

[Q] Can't change my ringtone all of a sudden

Hey guys,
I've got a Nexus 4 running the latest version of Cyanogenmod.
Every things been fine with the phone until I woke up this morning and found I'd lost my custom ringtone. Also, my photo's wern't showing up in Gallery. I connected my phone up to my PC to see what was what. (Half the time my computer won't open the phone, it just opens up saying '0 items', and I have to un-plug and re-plug in the phone several times before it lets me access the internal storage).
I found that nothing had changed; everything was still on my phone, all my pictures, ringtones etc. I quickly backed them all up to my PC in case the Nexus decided to delete them.
I really don't understand why my phone is doing this. I've put my custom .mp3 ringtone in every audio folder I could find;
Media>Audio>Notifications>Ringtones
Music
Notifications
Ringtones
I've got the song saved in about 8 different locations on the phone, and it still won't recognise it in the ringtones options. I've tried various 'ringtone-setting' apps, but they haven't worked. They told me that my custom ringtone was selected but when the phone rang, it used the default tone.
ALSO, when I tried to put my photos back on my phone (DCIM>Camera) they arn't showing up in my Gallery.
Any one else experience similar problems and knows a solution?
Many thanks

Use file explorer and start to hunt down a file name ".nomedia" (without quotes), the file explorer need to have "show hidden files" enabled. For your case, most likely there is one placed under /sdcard.

There isn't a .nomedia file in the root of the storage but there is a NOMEDIA file in the Notifications folder.

Just copy your files in notifications and/or ringtone in the folders on your internal storage. They will appear in your choices.
No individual Notification tones in Nougat?
Can you not apply individual notification tones in Nougat ? I used to be able to assign tines for FaceBook (FB "PoP"), whatsapp, different tones for both sim texts (I have dual sim phones now all running Nougat V7). I'm using a Huawei Mate 9 128gb and Porsche Design Mate 9
Seems a bit mad to me as it was a great feature or am I missing something?
Check that you don't have a .nomedia file in the root file system. I had an app do this and it disabled my custom ringtone and notification sounds.
I had to remove it and remove and replace my custom sounds to fix.
I have a Nexus 6P myself, with Android 7.
I don't know why this isn't said more often: You need root access. And it shows up in none of the "solutions" on Google.
The stock notification sounds are in /system/media/audio/notifications, and you need root access do do anything there. Most apps just give you an option of picking a sound from this particular folder. So all other advice on this is stupid and pointless.
You need root access to have a custom ringtone on your Android. Certainly a blow to the philosophy of how "free" Android is supposed to be compared to iOS.

I have replaced the the original files with the one I would like to have, i.e. renamed the file "original.ogg" to "blabla.ogg", copied the custom filed "custom.ogg" in the corresponding folder, renamed to "original.ogg". When I select "original.ogg" as a ringtone, e.g. in whatsapp, the standard notification tone is played instead. However, if I click on the file in whatsapp, the correct tone appears. Choosing "original.ogg" as the standard ringtone leads to no ringtone sound at all. Any thoughts?

I had the same problem on my S7 Edge and figured out the problem. The files copied over with the Attribute Permissions of R/W for the OWNER and nothing on the GROUP and GLOBAL level. In Solid explorer, I changed the permissions to READ on the GROUP and GLOBAL levels and its now working like a charm.
After the upgrade to Android 7, I lost my ringtones and notifications that I downloaded to the Ringtones and Notifications folders in the root of my SD card. I had to copy those folders in to the system /media folder, including the Alarms foder. After that, I was able to see all my personal ringtones, notifications and alarms. This only works in the internal storage.

custom sounds for notifications?

Hi,
I've tried following online instructions for adding custom notification sounds, which say to copy the sound file to storage>emulated>notifications, and then selecting the sound via settings>[app of interest]. But when trying to use the custom sound for the messages app, the new sound doesn't appear in the list, and I can't find a way to select any other custom sound.
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks...
restart the phone or use some app for media data base refresh
of the top of my head SD scanner or something like this is the name of the app
just search play store for Media data base scanner or rescan
Thanks for the tip. I've rebooted, and downloaded/run SD Scanner, with no joy. The file I'm trying to use is in mp3 format; is that a problem?
FWIW, the problem S10 is my wife's phone. I used the recommended process last night to add the same mp3 file to my ancient Nexus 6P, and in a strange sequence of events, it didn't 'take' last night when we checked, but when I got my 1st text this morning, the notification sound had changed to the new sound.
The S10's available sounds under 'general notifications'>'sound' include a category of 'custom', which has 'Facebook Pop' as its only entry, but I can't find any way to access the 'custom' category to add a file to it.
Again, thanks for any assistance.

hmmm just to be clear you added mp3 to Notification folder (the default one) and i wont show up in app when trying to change the sound or it wont show up in samsung's notification sound selection? (also try adding the sound to ringtones folder)
also you could try converting the sound to *.OGG see if that does the trick?
Correct. Added to Notification folder, but file name doesn't show up it the selection list for messages app sounds, nor any of the general 'sounds and vibration' subcategories. I'll try to convert the file to .ogg format and retry.
Thanks; will post my results.

Converted to .ogg, added to notifications, ringtones, and the just-noticed 'sounds' folder. I can now see the file under 'settings'> 'sounds and vibration'>'ringtone' in the 'custom' category. I can change the ringtone to the new file. But it does *not* appear anywhere in the settings>notification sound section, nor as an option when going down the menu tree for the messages app notifications. The ringtone category also includes multiple other custom audio files, but the notification sound category has only that 'facebook pop' file under the custom category.
OK, I tried multiple other things, and in the process, discovered (via a file explorer app that I'm comfortable with) that there's a folder under storage>emulated> called 'mobile content'. In *that* folder are folders with the same names as under the 'emulated' parent folder: data, dcim, download, notifications, ringtones, sounds, etc.
So.... I copied the files to notifications, ringtones, and sounds, and now the desired file shows up in the messages list. And, we now get the desired sound as a messages notification.
Thanks for the help, and a heads-up to the next person that has to deal with this. The phone had a hard reset before being gifted to my wife from her son. We used Samsung's transfer app to move her data/apps from her Samsung S8+ to this phone, and we haven't created any new folders beyond those created by Samsung.
Again, thanks for the help; without the new ideas I'd never have dug that deep into the directory tree on the phone.
Charlie
Followup:
Apparently you can get a messages 'notification' (for what?) that's different from a 'new messages' 'notification'.
Duh. Nothing I've found online about the Samsung s10 mentions this.
