Today FoxFi said it needed to install VPN certificates on my Note 3, then required I set up a PIN/Pattern on the lock screen. I hate mandatory locks on my phone and don't want it. I use App Protector for the apps I want locked. I've used FoxFi for a couple of weeks now and it just did this today. I know I read somewhere that you don't need FoxFi to enable the Mobile HotSpot, but mine doesn't launch without it. I am rooted and hoping that something else is available.
Any ideas?
Yeah I'd like to know what this is about as well. I'm getting the same message now. Like u said there is another way but I liked FoxFi and it works well. Idk what to do. I hit install and then u have the option to choose to use it for a VPN and apps or WiFi? I'd like to here from someone who knows a bit more about this before I go doing anything. By the way I am Not rooted either. Still 100% stock.

I just figured it out man!!! Open Foxfi hit the menu button, press hash code, type nolockscreen exactly like that. That's it! Now turn on hotspot like u would, u get the Verizon pop up, just hit home button and wha LA!!! Back in business and u don't need a pin or pattern lock screen!!!!

I cannot thank you enough! It's strange but from last night to today it started prompting me for the lockscreen. It's pretty annoying to have that enabled and I was already going to look for a new method when I can across this post. Once again thanks a million!

No problem I'm glad I saw your post. It's what caught my attention to it so I went n looked at the app in the playstore to see if maybe it was because of an update and after reading through the description of the app I noticed way at the bottom that it said to do that for it to work with the galaxy s4. I figured they're similar phones so I gave it a shot and it did! We helped each other man! Without your post I would've never bothered to read that completely.

Thank you soo of much! I was pissed when they updated it. You had to choose between a pain in the ass combo for your lock screen or no lock screen at all. Now I can have my one swipe lock screen like I had before. I don't know why they changed the way it works for the note 3. Maybe for the people who couldn't figure out to press the home button.

As far as I know, Verizon thinks you have the hotspot active, but foxfi seems to spoof the subscription check for whether you have Verizon tethering or not. I would assume the VPN setup is to link the tethered devices so that all data appears to go through the phone connection and not the tether. Built in tethering popping up is probably the only way to turn the wifi into a router-like device.
It does work, and while I only tethered a few things while on vacation, Verizon has not gotten mad at me yet.
I would expect FoxFi to continue working on it, and restore their app to the old functionality of not using the built in tethering once they figure out how to make it work.
This doesn't seem to work on Kitkat... anyone know what else to try short of wiping the phone and starting fresh?
i never set a password on credential storage and the option to delete it is grayed out.... I've also tried several ways with no lock screen, PIN lock, Pattern lock... doesn't seem to get past this message.....

Same thing here it doesn't work on NC4 firmware. I asked in my own thread on how the devs are bypassing the tether check but no one will answer me. I asked a long time ago and again last night. Still no answer.

I'm not rooted. I have been using FoxFi before and after Kitkat. The update before the one that fixed it for Kitkat was where mine required a screen lock and certificates, but I had a screen lock on my phones for years, so it wasn't a big deal for me. The newest update that allows it to work with 4.4.2 is a bit annoying (having to randomly re-authorize it when the security asks for permission) and then having to use it's short cut to fool the phone into believing you have a hot spot subscription...but I burned over 120 gig last billing cycle and find it easier than some of the other wifi tether masks.

My brother in law recently switched over to SPRINT and gave me his pretty new DX. I can't activate the phone until next week (because he made the mistake of porting the phone number BEFORE he gave me the phone) so according to VZW i have to wait until that process is completed and the billing cycle is finished before I can use the phone. (I don't think he plans on paying them )
My question is...can I root the DX before I actually get it linked to my VZW phone number? (like remove google apps and just use the phones capabilities like camera etc. without having to call and activate it) I'm coming from HTC Droid eris so I don't know much about rooting the DX yet.
Can someone help me please.
I believe you can, I think theirs a way to bypass the activation screen. You might be able to find it on the forums or if not just Google it I'm sure you can find it.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Yes you can root it without being on a network. all you need to do is go back out of this thread and read the first sticky and go to the wiki. I would post link but since this is my first actual post i cant
And after your phone reboots you can get passed the little android man by touching each corner in a circular motion.
I hope for your sake that your brother in law pays Verizon. If he doesn't in they most likely blacklist the phones esn.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
But keep in mind if the phone doesn't have OTA 2.2 you might want to keep all apps because the update might fail because missing files.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You don't even need to do the 4 corner trick.
Touch the android, hit next until you have the options of "create google login, sign in, or skip" and just choose skip. That easy.
That's assuming he's at the "touch to begin screen" which he probably isn't being that he's the second owner.
...but yeah, check the sticky and root away.
Thanks for the information guys. Yeah I really hope that they allow him to give me his phone. I kept verifying with the rep that it would be okay to transfer the phone, he said it should be okay since it's HIS property. But i never know with those guys...
I don't plan on removing any apps at all I just want get the root access and ready so when I do hook it up, it'll be ready to go.
I'm excited to see what you guys have in store for this phone...especially coming from the Eris.
Just connect with wifi and use as normal. That easy. You can even setup a google account and use market and have all the sweet and chewies of using the X less the ability of calls and texts.
As stated above, if he doesn't pay the bill VzDubya will (normally) put the phone on the do not activate list. Again though this wont effect use while connected to wifi.
Will I have to set the phone to USB debugging mode if I try and root?
If so, I dont think I'll be able to root since I can't even get passed the "Activation Screen"
Also, how can I check to see what android version he is on (2.1 or 2.2) How do I look at the bootloader info...can I do that w/o Root? Is that dangerous? I don't want to brick the phone...
sorry for all the questions guys appreciate your patience.
Anyone?

I mean seriously, do you even read any of the posts before replying?
1) OP said he's running a Villain ROM which means he's rooted and modded.
2) Another poster running Villain can't replicate the problem.
3) No one other than the OP (and I'm assuming even you) can replicate the problem.
4) Who knows what the OP might be running app wise that might be triggering the issue on his phone.
I know I'm not a mod but these little "crisis" posts that start out as embers end up being raging fires. Maybe its because of all the different languages spoken. By all means, if anyone running a stock ROM can replicate this report back. It would indeed then be an issue worthy of the front page and the title "Security Flaw in our phones."
Just to add - I'm using litening 1.1, and I have an enforced exchange PIN.
Double clicking the home button will not get past the password entry screen.
Believe me, I've tried all ROMs and various apps to get around the password, still haven't found one yet.

it should work if you checked one handed operations in the settings. this was the first thing i tried on the display model at the at&t store today. the guy in the video is kinda doing the wrong gesture to get it to work though. its not a half circle gesture, you need to swipe the screen to the left and back to the right real quick with out taking your finger off the screen. or vice versa.
Did that already. Still does not work. Dont know why. Hehe.

I had the same problem. I solved it by disabling all accessibility services, in my case it was lightflow that caused it. If you enable lightflow you get a warning that talkback can't be active in junction with several Samsung services, which is on one hand exactly what happens. On the other hand it's not talkback that's activated, but lightflow. which is really strange : the message is simply wrong.
I spotted this thread here:
http://developer.samsung.com/forum/...=GeneralB&messageId=204387&messageNumber=2156
Look at post #35. This is a bug of the S4 but it seems to be also existent on the note 3. this is what also breaks the gesture for one handed operation .

This is it! I disabled all my accessibility services and suddenly one-handed mode worked right away!
That's a bit of a damn shame, as I need those services for my Pebble and to a lesser extent, Lama. Oh well, fingers crossed for a bugfix.
We better cross fingers very hard because Samsung had not fixed this for over a year!!!
To get this working it seems all accessibility options have to be turned off. I don't think any specific third party app is to blame as any of the ones on the screen cap caused the function to stop if it was turned on. If they are turned of it works fine in Touch wiz and other launchers tried.
Hope this is fixed soon as Lightflow, DynamicNotifications, Pebble and Tasker etc. are very useful to me - even more so when rooting is reliably sorted.
It's also worth mentioning that turning on any of these accessibility options also causes the standard browser to keep talking annoyingly saying "Page Loading", Page Loaded" etc. Further indication it is an Android bug.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 4
Yes you are wright. This was the problem. But without pebble and tasker is not my option, so I'll wait for the fix it.

You're right it does give that warning but it used to be when the warning popped up instead of hitting cancel you would just push your home button and wa la it worked! But now you get a pop up from foxfi asking to let them install a VPN and if u do this it will work again. And if by some chance u get the Verizon pop up again just hit home, not cancel.

Foxfi is an amazing app! It has totally saved me. I had a rooted note 2 that I used my hotspot on to give WiFi to my Nexus 7 that's installed in my car dash so that way I could use maps, music, etc. When getting the note 3 with Verizon, knowing it would be locked down, my biggest concern was losing my hotspot cause I need it for the car. And yes one can just root their N3 to get around this but if you're me, well then you have no windows PC computer therefore cannot root! Not this phone anyway. So Foxfi allowed me to keep my hotspot even without having root and for me anyway, that's the point of Foxfi! And that's why its so useful.

Curious you running the latest firmware? If your not, obviously do not accept it.
Also are you on "shared everything" plan? This makes a difference as that "shared everything" plans apparently have the hotspot free, but if your on a normal/unlimited plan, then its not free..
I ask because I'm on the latest firmware, with FoxFi/PdaNet and it does not work for me.

Yes, I took the latest update, which got me into this mess. I was running it without issue before this. I am still on grandfathered unlimited, which is why FoxFi is necessary for me. Just happy I got it back to working, albeit now with a necessary pattern lock, but a happy sacrifice to keep tethering.

Hello,
I seem to not be able to get FoxFi to work, I know this is redundant but can you confirm the following steps:
uninstall foxfi
uninstall foxfi key
remove certificate from the settings->security panel
reboot phone
install foxfi
install certificate with default vpn parameters
turn on foxfi wifi
when verizon dialog box pops up hit the home button
I've tried that 3-4 times and it doesn't seem to work. Previous to the OTA update there would be a red icon showing in the top left of the screen when the hotspot was enabled, that no longer shows up, just the foxfi icon saying wifi is available. I am unable to logon to the hotspot wifi though.
Thanks

Nope. Not for me. I let it set up the VPN. Tried with and without the nolockscreen hash code. Not toggling the hotspot on. When i try manually, it just turns back off. Are you all verifying that you can still tether? Are there any settings in the Mobile Hotspot configuation you changed?
UPDATE: Got it working. I had installed the VPN certificate "for wifi" instead of "VPN and apps". I removed the certificate and started up FoxFi, this time leaving it with the default "VPN and apps" on the certificate installation. All is well now. Thanks!

Does anyone have any idea how I can change the encryption method back to swipe using Foxfi? I've tried all methods in this thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2743117&page=8 to no avail. When trying those methods and going back into security - encryption, all items except password are greyed out un-available.
I drive a truck with the phone in a cradle and I REALLY need to be able to go back to just swiping the screen to unlock when I am rolling.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
VZW Galaxy S5 Retail Edition, rooted w/ SuperSU installed & knox disabled. Running Foxfi for wireless hotspot. Unless there is another way for me to make the hotspot work? Not on an 'everything' plan on old unlimited so I need to hack the hotspot.

Not sure where the problem lies because that method, while a pain in the ass, does work. Another way would be to install one of the ROMs that has the Verizon provisioning turned off, and then you can just use the built in hotspot toggle.

x2, or just install the Xposed framework, and X Tether, and remove FoxFi altogether. I mean, if you're already rooted, there's no real risk to the Xposed and X Tether that I have found. And SWIPE AWAY with it. I have been for a couple months now.
Found another quicker way to do this:
1. Goto google.com/android/devicemanager and locate your phone.
2. Click "Lock" and chose a new number password.
3. Type the new password on your phone and it will unlock.
4. Now it should let your change the lockscreen to anything, and foxfi will continue to work
Still working after restarting phone and using Foxfi
