[Q] Disable LG and Google Keyboards - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I use SwiftKey -- one thing I don't like is every time the keyboard opens, a notification lands up top asking me to select my keyboard. On HTC, I would simply rename the HTC keyboard APK and that was that.
What would be the equivalent process here?
Thanks!

If you're rooted and have Titanium Backup installed, just uninstall LG Keyboard and the themes that go with it.

Not sure why it would do that? I always use SwiftKey, and never had that notification on mine. Weird.
But, as mentioned, rooting is a good way to clear the bloat. Amd is really easy too.

Are you talking about the keyboard switcher in the notification bar/shade? You should be able to disable that in settings under language/input somewhere. If it's not there, your old method will work OR un-checking all other keyboards in the same language/input menu, disabling, or uninstalling any additional keyboards.

Yes, the KB switcher in notification bar / shade. I have never been able to disable that via a setting. The LG and Google keyboards cannot be deselected (greyed out) thus leaving disabling / uninstalling as the only option.

You have to delete all other input methods except for swiftkey if you want to remove the notification.

Resolved. I rooted and renamed the LG IME to .apk.bak using ES File Manager and I disabled the Google AOSP keyboard.

On my end I just wanted to confirm that the solution with Titanium backup Pro worked.
I just had to freeze the LG keyboard and the 3 LG themes, disable Google Voice Recognition (uncheck automatic) and reboot, et voila !

Only one keyboard, input method menu option still showing

I installed swiftkey today to play around with it but uninstalled it. However now the input method menu option is still showing in text fields, even though android keyboard is the only choice. Anyone know how to get rid of this? Restarting and reinstalling / uninstalling swiftkey did not help. Thanks.
try clearing data for the keyboard?

Nice idea....no dice though!
Well this is odd...I restored a nandroid from before I installed swiftkey (only had android keyboard as an option) and the input method menu option is still there. Is this how its always been on cyanogenmod or something and I never noticed? I know it used to not show up, but now I don't know when that changed.

So you got it working? If not then go into MENU>SETTINGS>LANGUAGEAND KEYBOARDS and puput a check mark in the box for your keyboard and then long press in a text field and it should be there.
I think the problem is that he can't get the option for the keyboard to go away, not that he can't get it to show up. I've never heard of a problem like this. How did you uninstall Swiftkey?

Yeah that's the problem, its not that the option for swiftkey is still there, its that the "input method" menu option is present in all text field context menus, and when you choose it, the only option is "android keyboard". I believe that in the past, if you only had one keyboard, "input method" did not show up at all. So I restored a nandroid to before I installed swiftkey, and "input method" is still showing despite having only one keyboard, which is why I'm confused.
I just uninstalled swiftkey the regular way from the running tab of applications.
So, if you're running cm6.1, do you see "input method" even with only one keyboard installed?
Ahhh, I see. The input method will always show up, regardless of how many keyboards you have. This happens to everyone and to my knowledge it isn't a bug.

Okay thanks for clearing that up. I believe with the stock Sense ROM it removed that option when only one keyboard was enabled, but I guess I never noticed it didn't behave that way in AOSP/Cyanogen.

[Q] Physical keyboard is stuck in "shorcut mode"

Problem: I can't use physical keyboard In my SMS prog (go sms), instead the shortcuts come up:
b - browser
s - sms program
e - email
g - gmail
etc.....
When did this start happening:
1. I updated from cm7 RC1 to RC2
2. Flashed Vivid theme from Sonny (Think thats what his name is)
Usually, if I restart the phone, the keys will work, but after a couple hours, it'll go back to shortcuts. Is there a way to disable shortcuts entirely, I never use them? Any advice how to fix my prob?
This happened to me as well, all you have to do is apply shortcuts to the quickkeys at the bottom of the hardware keyboard and you're set

Should be stated that this can be done via CM Settings > Input > Quick key 1/2/3
Clearing all of the shortcuts fixes the problem for me
Settings > Applications > Quick Launch > LONG PRESS to clear
^^Actually, this is the best thing to do.

[Q] keyboard icon

How do I stop the keyboard icon in the top left of the notification bar? I was using the stock keyboard and I could uncheck the Google voice typing, but it kept coming back. I changed to swipe, but now I can't uncheck the stock keyboard or disable it.
Any thoughts?
I get this alert from time to time to so i wonder about this too??
This is an Android 'feature' you can't turn off. The keyboard icon comes up whenever a keyboard is on the screen. You can't hide the icon. It's the same with any Android phone. I think it disappears if you use stock keyboard but I might be wrong.
Yes it's a stock android thing, but other phones you can disable the other keyboards so it doesn't pop up. I was hoping there was a way to do the same on this phone.

The reason you could not complete uncheck the Google Voice in Setting/Language and Input because your LG keyboard using it as an add on. I had try to turn the Google Voice off but it will come back agian
To disable the icon keyboard icon in the top left of the notification bar you should go to Setting/Language and Input then
1. Uncheck the Google Voice in Setting/Language and Input
2. hit the LG keyboard setting (it was a gear icon in the end of the LG keyboard row) then uncheck Voice input.

Use any Root Uninstaller to uninstall LG keyboard (remember to backup the LG keyboard).

[Q] google voice typing not working and no mic on any keyboard

Can't figure this one out. Using the LG keyboard, I do not have a mic icon no matter what I try (it is enabled in settings). Selecting Google Voice typing doesn't even open. Using the stock google keyboard from the play store doesn't allow me to select the mic icon either from the ',' key. I have checked the installed voice engines (LG, Pico) and installed the google voice engine but nothing works. Anyone else having problems with this function?

Yes exact same issue- in settings under Lang and Input & LG Keyboard, voice input is auto selected but grayed out. Google search bar widget shows mic icon in preview view, but when I add it to the home screen the mic icon is gone and nothing happens when you click on the bar. Phone's mic is working normally. Gettin worried....
Same problem!
24A IOroot TWRP 2.7 Malladus 2.0.2.
To text, I have to tap a LOT of buttons.
1 tap on text icon.
Then tap the + icon to compose new message.
Then tap the status bar button to drop down status bar.
Then tap choose input method.
Then choose either "Google voice typing" or "LG Keyboard".
Then choose contact.
Then text.
There is no microphone icon on the LG keyboard for texting.
I'm a noob. This is the clunkiest text interface I could imagine.
What am I missing? Is there a text app I need to download to get a better interface with the ROM?
Thanks for any help!!
I can drop-down the status bar and touch allows me to select between Google mic or LG keyboard,

BTW - my google voice typing does work when I select it as described above.
I enabled it under Settings / Language and Input.
Try uninstalling Google voice search and then reinstalling it. This worked for me.

Do you have a settings cog to the left of your space bar? If so long press that and you are presented with options including the microphone. Once you click on the microphone the popup window goes away and the settings cog is replaced with a microphone. This worked for me when I had the LG Keyboard. I'm currently using the AOSP keyboard which has the microphone by default.

Thanks!
Worked like a charm!
My button left of the keyboard had the pencil. On longpress, it gives the option of pencil, mic, settings, or a note thingy.
I had it in my head that my problem was some kind of buggy thing associated with removing bloat and stuff.
In fact, it was nothing more than "please try to learn how to use your own phone".
So I kinda feel dumb....
But on the positive side, you look brilliant!
Thanks!

Just stumbled across it one day. You can do the same with the command and period buttons to the right of the space bar.

I had the exact same problem, and after hours of searching, found that somehow Google Search was disabled. Go to settings/applications and slide all the way to the right under "disabled" and click on Google Search, and then re-enable it.
Next, go to General Settings/Language & Input and make sure there is a check next to Google Voice Typing. Problem should be solved.

Exactly the same thing happened to me once but i figured the problem!
Follow these steps to fix the problem
1. Open settings, in the general column click on language and input.
2. Go to Google voice typing and enable it.
3. Click on the gear next to Google voice typing.
4. Change the language to only English US.
5. AND THAT'S IT....IT WORKED FOR ME.....ENJOY VOICE TYPING!!!

I go to Settings, scroll down to Slide Aside (Device section) and then click the toggle switch (top right), does that not work for you?
I don't even have that option...
I never really found it all that useful when Google's builtin Multitasking app lets me pick any open app (not just 3). Plus I don't have to manually hide anything.
I DO use the floating apps and Memo often.

Sorry, I read your initial post too quickly. I now understand that you meant you had disabled Slide Aside. So now it is listed with your Disabled apps but the Enable button is greyed out, correct?
I wonder if another app is also disabled that Slide Aside had as a dependency?
Are you rooted? Have you ever run GMD Auto Hide Softkeys?
No i'm not rooted.
D802 International with kit kat 4.4.2
As you'r right the button its greyed out.
And in the menu the option its not there.
same issue here, disabled slide away while phone is on root, flashed to official 4.4.2 and am unable to enable slide away.
I guess the solution is to root my phone and enable it again
But i'v never been rooted at all
No ideas guys?
