[Q] S memo on Galaxy Note 3 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I am Francesco and I am new to the forum so I apologize if I am posting in the wrong placing or else...
I am a a Galaxy Note fan. I had the Note 1 and now have the Note 3. However, what I loved the most about the note 1 was the S memo app, and in particular its on screen widgets, which, differently from what happens with action memos in note 3, could be of more sizes, you create many off etc etc... I realky dont understand why Samsung would get rid of the S memo app and I am personally trying to get it back.
I tried installing the apk... I can create widjets but the app doesnt actually work.. any tip? Maybe rooting the devicd? I'd do whatever to have S memo back!

yes you need root ,so you can get root explorer and push it into system but it still might not work

if you find a way, please let me know, because i miss the resizable sticky notes on my home screen, and the widget for action memo sucks... only displays the last note (and what if i need to put another one?)

I already "pushed it into the system" downloading the apk and installing it in the device. It`s there, it opens and it creates widgets but the second I try to write or modify a widget, it fails and closes... Would rooting solve this?

[Q] Missing - lock screen shortcuts, ability to change bottom row of apps

Hey everybody,
Long long time reader, first time poster.
I've just bought a Galaxy Note 3, because I was so happy with the Note 2 I just had to have the new one.
To my surprise, there's a couple of fundamental features missing from my ****ty AU version (my Note 2 was an International Version).
There doesn't seem to be an option to enable lockscreen shortcuts, I've seen videos online of people enabling these on their respective Note 3's, but the AU version just doesn't seem to have it.
The other thing that is really grinding my gears is that the bottom row of apps on the homescreen is locked. Ie. they can not be moved or changed (Phone, Contacts, Messages, Internet, Apps), why in gods name would Samsung ever lock something like that?
There is one last thing, but I can't be sure if this is an isolated AU version issue or one that is across the board, but when I plug in my headphones, it doesn't take me to that wonderful Music specific screen like the Note 2 did. Is this something that has just been omitted from this phone or is it entirely an AU specific thing?
My question then becomes, is there anything I can do about this?
I've noticed a JB 4.3 Firmware kicking about and I would gladly void my warranty to get back these features. But I don't want to void my warranty and still not have these features, if you know what I mean.
I'd really appreciate any advice on this, as I said, I've been a long time reader of this forum, any time I've googled anything about my phone, this is the place I end up, so I know you're a knowledgeable bunch, help me out
Thanks in advance, I'll be watching this space.
Mine doesn't even have the lock screen apps but I have a favorite apps widget on the lock screen.
Plus I don't have the flare in lock screen like I saw in a video review.
I have the Germany Snapdragon version

I hate the locked dock as well .... also, the Australian version of touchwiz does not work in landscape mode. eg: if you use Ultimate Rotation Control to force the home screen to rotate, the touchwiz icons wont align properly in landscape.
I have complained on their Samsung Australia facebook, but none of the rep has replied.
https://www.facebook.com/SamsungAustralia/posts/10151943776798523
I think it is the decision of the samsung Australia to lock the dock and not allow us to change it.
maybe we need to form a petition on change.org

If you don't care about voiding your warranty then it's easy fixed. It just involves deleting a couple of lines in others.xml which you can do with root explorer or a similar root file manager. I have and more all good

Aus Note 3
Regarding the Aussie Note 3 dock etc, I believe this is due to the ongoing legal crap between Sammy & Apple.
Use a custom launcher or flash other firmware?
Hi all. I am from Romania, Europe, and bought on 25th september a Note 3 from Korea. Is a N900K model, unlocked, so is working with my SIM from Vodafone RO. I had a Note 2 before and I was very happy with it. But now... I don't know... There are some problems and one is the lock screen shortcuts that I can't change. There is a "slide to right" menu were you can put the shortcuts, but not directly on the lock screen. Why?
thanks, it works without any security ... but in the my note 1 t can still have shortcut with some security

Galaxy Note 3 missing shortcut icons
Last week, I bought Samsung Galaxy Note 3. All features and configurations are very nice. But one thing is that I saw in Youtube video clips, for the other person's Note 3 have the shortcuts like S Voice, Action note and Touchwiz home but not for my one. Though I tried to create these icons, I can't do it. I know these apps are in there. It takes more than 4 days for me. No success. Can you help me. I can't find the clues anywhere.

Thanks for this 'teaser', but you didn't say which 'one-or-two-files' these are..?

in /system/csc the two files I checked were feature.xml & others.xml.
I think others.xml may not be important, I edited the option in there and still had no access to the Hotseat. Buit feature.xml worked.
The setting to change is
<CscFeature_Launcher_ReplaceHotseatAreaInEditMode>true</CscFeature_Launcher_ReplaceHotseatAreaInEditMode>
set it to false.
reboot, and you now can edit the hotseat / bottom row. thank christ for that.
So while teaserguy was only half helpful, a little bit of tinkering did help.
also, just incase anyone is unaware, yes.. you need to root your device to access these files.

Just got Note 3, no pop up note feature (action memo sucks)

Hi everyone,
This is my first post.
I switched from note 2 to note 3.
Just discovered there is no S-Note pop up feature, which was my MOST used/desired feature in Note 2, and now with the Note 3, it does NOT have this feature, only Action Memo, which is very basic, and saves as an Action Memo file, not an S-Note file, which would have been perfect.
So the action memo app is so basic, you can't even sync with google docs or whatever back up source. It only stays on the phone. Cant edit the memo names, cant change the pen type etc. Very sh***y.
Just wondering if there is a way, on my Note 3, i can install the old S-Note which was on the note 2, and have the pop up feature when S-pen is Detached?
Thanks

I agree, Samsung stupidly took pop up browser away, can't understand why, I really hope they include it again in an update - can't see it tho. Just baffles me why they removed it, for an inferior method.
Yes. I have not been using the s pen at all. My main use was for the pop up note when s pen detaches. Action memo isn't meant to be a note taking replacement app. Very frustrating.
Any solution to this?
Thanks again
I miss the pop note too. When I sold my note 2 I had about 40 notes.
Now the new s note doesn't even have shape recognition by default.

1 week into using n3 and already can see many improvements needed for s-pen workflow
1) tap twice on the screen while holding spen button to launch AM
2) once your note is written, select it for a screen capture by tracing a circle around with the spen while holding spenbutton
3) save to snote or whatevrr app in the share dialog
4)save in snote
Not as easy than the straight GN2 experience but it's the best workaround I've found.

Get floating browser from the play store. Its even better then pop up browser IMO ..

Did you ever get any solution figured out? I've got the same problem going on with the Verizon version.
Hi Guys, had this very same issue. I am not sure my symptoms match your's, but here's mine. Basically air command, double tapping on the screen does not fire up the Action Memo app, which is supposed to in a normally functioning device.
First of all make sure you don't delete/free ALL your action memo instances in Titanium Backup. There's quite a few, so make sure they are not frozen.
Second, check to see if you have the xposed framework installed. If it is installed, un-install it and reboot. See if action memo works via Air command.
If Action Memo works after that, you can reinstall xposed framework. This is how I got mine working again. Hope it helps

Man I wish I could be giving you a positive confirmation that it works... But it doesn't. I uninstalled xposed & all modules, confirmed all 3 action memo files aren't frozen or disabled and rebooted several times. Still no action memo in any form (air command, lock screen or app). I'm so frustrated over this one stupid thing it's ridiculous.
Only thing left for me to try is to move my titanium backup off device and go to stock and back.

Samsung replaced Action Memo with S Note. Old memos are stored as jpg in a device folder, actionmemo. They can be viewed and deleted but not modified.

I'd suggest going back to a stock base and not touching any apps surrounding action memo - and unless you're positive it's not associated with action menu, leave it. Then try freezing the ones you're questionable about one by one and see which can be safely removed and still let action memo still function. Best suggestion there amigo! :good:

[GUIDE] Speed up and customise Note 2014

Root
This guide assumes that you have rooted your tablet.
Instructions to do so can be found here:
P600 - Wifi only model
P605 - Lte model
Disabling Apps
Why?
Disabling Apps can have a significant performance improvement. A lot of apps startup on boot and use a little bit of ram to cache. Disabling the apps/services you don't need will free up some of the ressources.
Instructions:
Keep the apps you need and if you are not sure rather keep an app more. You can disable a lot more if you know what you are doing. You can either disable/freeze using Titanium Backup Pro or ROM Toolbox Lite. If you do it that way the apps will still be enabled if you create a second user on your tablet. You should rename the apks to .bak in /system/app then they should be gone globally. You can do this with the free ES File Explorer, just make sure to select root "Root Explorer" under Tools and to mount /system/app as r/w through the menu you get by clicking on "Root Explorer".
This is the list of apps you can safely disable.
AllShare Cast Dongle S/W Update
AllShare ControlShare Service

Keep these under all circumstances:
SystemUI
Other things:
Animations:
Increasing the speed of animations can make it feel faster, because you are not waiting on the animations to finish. Disabling the animations can make it feel very fast, but if you like animations you might as well keep them.
To be able to change the animation speed you first need to enable developer options:
Open settings
Navigate to General -> About device
Tap on "Build number" 7 times
You should get a notification "You are now 4,3,2,1 taps away from being a developer
Open up the developer settings
Scroll down to "Drawing"
You can change Window/Transition/Animator animation scale. I would advise setting them to 0.5 or disabling them
Nova Launcher
This launcher is one of the fastest. If you go into "Nova Settings" under "Look and feel" you can set the "Scroll Speed" and "Animation Speed" to Faster than light. This will make the tab feel like a rocket.
Customize Apps for MultiWindow
Download and install the Xposed Framework
Open Xposed installer
Go into Framework
Select Install/Update
Download/Install MultiWindowManager
Open it and select the apps you want to be able to use in MultiWindow
Reboot
Now when you press on edit in MultiWindow you can select all your apps
Factory Resetting / Updating to newest firmware
There have been several updates from samsung which drastically increase the performance. Make sure you are on the newest available firmware. Also if you are experiencing lag or any issues it might be a good idea to start from scratch. You can search on Sammobile for your device number and download the firmwares. You can also download firmwares from other countries and flash them with Odin. For example I'm using ML1 from Taiwan atm even though I'm in Germany. Just be aware that there might be differences between the firmwares. But make 100% sure that your device number matches. You have to extract the file you downloaded and put the tar.md5 file into the "pda" slot. This will wipe your internal sd card completely, including your data, so backup because everything will be gone.
If this helped you let me know and if you have suggestions I can add them to the OP.

iPad sucks. Yes it's fast, and the apps look good, but that's it. If you want to do any actual work on it, or watch whatever show or movie you throw at it, or really multi-task, it blows.

Cool, hope that your device will perform as well as mine when you apply the guide.
There are several limitation with iOS that make it harder to do serious work. You tried and saw for yourself... And I doubt there will be a stylus ever, I recall Steve saying at the launch event that it's easy to use, works with your finger, a pen would just add an additional layer of complexity.

Yes let us know what your experiences are. I've always thought iOS was too restricting overall but with 7, they seemed to make it a bit more flexible.

Well I got the Air on Friday and tried it all through today, when I finally had enough. iOS 7, in my opinion, is “prettier”, but functionally, nothing has changed.
You still need iTunes if you want to put any movies on it, you still don’t have any access to folders, and it’s generally the same walled garden it has always been.
Very happy to be back on Android.

Yes, this is a very good tip. All that software piled up on top of each other can cause issues.
Any device that updates i'll do the ol' factory reset afterwards to run at optimal performance.

Things to Delete?

I just got my first Note series phone. I was wondering if there is anything I should straight delete after turning on the phone for the first time.
Someone said delete the Tmobile app cause it can show you're rooted? I held down and moved it to Remove spot., but does that delete it from the phone?
If anyone knows of any others that would be much appreciated.

No, system apps can't be deleted unless you are rooted. They can be disabled tho, which will remove the icon from the App drawer.
What you did, was just remove the icon from the desktop.
Ahh. Ok, thanks for the response.
I think even though I disabled some of the apps. Some still show up in App drawer. Like Music. I disabled that cause I have 3 freakin different music players. Like why the hell do they do that?
Anyways it's still showing up on my App drawer.
Rooting is really tempting me. Even though this is my first Note and have no experience doing it.

You should try using a different Launcher. Such as Nova or Apex. They have the option of 'Hiding' the icon that you don't want shown in the app drawer. Maybe you should start with that since you are new rooting.
Oh i thought you needed to root to change the launcher. Thanks for that info.

You can completely change the look of your phone without rooting, but you won't be able to do a lot of the things people like to do.
Here is a link to a good article on various launchers: http://www.androidpit.com/what-is-the-best-android-launcher
I really enjoyed Buzz Launcher for a long time, but I'm using Smart Launcher now with Cover Lockscreen on top of it. Can't wait to get my Note 4 and make the big from my Note 2.
