Yesterday I upgraded my sgs to froyo jpc with kies. I am new with Android but the post of Aery(congrats and thanks) was so clear that i didnt resist: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...=froyo+upgrade
Froyo is of course better than eclair but Android is still disappointing to me.*EDIT: ( If the official Froyo will be better than jpc so maybe, not that disappointing)*
I miss that proper voice dial/control (over bluetooth or not) and proper connectivity control (network,data,bluetooth and gps) of the old Symbian S60 OS on my lost 5800XM
Some Android fans did say that Symbian is primitive in comparison to Android. Well the first edition of the S60 didnt even have kinectic scrolling or multi-touch( the 5800 doesnt even have a capacitive touch screen), but what do I care about those toying things? I want basic functions working properly out of the box.
Android users have to wait till version 2.2 to get voice dialing over bluetooth and it's there now, but is very crappy.
Could android developers not investigate how Symbian does that?
I have mostly dutch names in mine phone book. Android's 2.2 voice dialing doesnt support the language of the phone if its not one of the 5 or 6 of its list
With symbian voice dialing will talk the phone's language as it should be.
With android voice dialing over bluetooth behaves erractic even in english.
And voice dialing directly at the phone doesnt repeat the names that it processes and it's so buggy and also erractic
With my old Nokia 5800XM, I could keep the phone in my pocket, and while listening to music with the headset, press and hold headset's talk button say a name the device repeats it and by no further action it makes the call; without even having to take phone out of the pocket....It wont happen with my sgs.
My car have bluetooth voice system that works perfectly ansd smoothly with my old 5800xm since the very first edition of the symbian S60, without pre-programing both systems...
Nothing primitive about that
Android developers should yhink about the future. The majority of the consumers don't know or don't have time to tweak a device or a OS or help to develop it. The majority of the users want a smartphone that will do basic functions and perform well out of the box...
Because if an android device will be just about being another expensive toy with cool graphics with cool touch-screen stuff, well, that market belongs to i-Phone.
And in this way, the future is not bright; they need to get a grip

you can use google voice build in or vlingo free
for data control there is SwitchPro, works great
yes there are still some stuff to polish on Android, it's not perfect, but we are getting there
and i agree the voice dialing is a bit buggy at recognizing the proper command or name to dial even in english

Android Market is full of useful Apps, tools, add ons, and games
i spend a whole week installing apps to see which one was better, as there are times many does the same thing, but some are better designed than other.
For me Android is the cats meow...
I had a Windows Mobile phone (HTC Mogul aka P4000 in Canada) It sucked pretty bad. If it was not for this community that phone would have been useless.
While I've never owned an Iphone, I've had a ipod touch 2nd gen for a while.
Then I got my Galaxy S... I sent a good a amount of time reading about this phone when Samsung announced it. I also sent a good amount of time reading about other HTC android devices along with android itself.
I decided on this phone due to it's specs and how eager the community sounded about it's overall potential.
Sure the iphone has a large following and a very large app store, but it's not nearly customizable as a solid android device with an eager community wanting to constantly push it to it's full potential.

I don't care if Android becomes another "hype" like the i-Phone, because it's "cool" is from Google or stuff like that.
I just want mine quite expensive Android device having the basic functions working properly out of the box.
Can you imagine what's gonna happen when Nokia decides to come up with a real high-end device, and with that I mean real fast processor, lots of Ram and Rom like in the sgs and then running Symbian^3 or Meego? The thing will fly.
That N8 is looking good but comes with the same old arm processor of the N97 just overlocked ( so I heard)
As I said I don't care about the i-Phone and all those suckers paying an abusive price to have a "hype" thing
And I dont care about how strong or rich Google gets. I am not a stock holder and i dont work for Google..do you?
I just wanted mine expensive phone having a good working stock voice dialing system.

Well, best answer till now. 2 years huh? Just that if you talk about vlingo, google voice search, voice dial of the 2.1 and all those apps on the market, you really should have a look at Symbian voice dialing; it looks like more than 2 years ahead.
Btw, Symbian S60 got it right on its first edition with the 5800XM. and that's very impressive for a phone that costs around 200 euros....
Well, but i like the bigger and brighter screen of the sgs. And its nice sound and good working wifi....but that have nothing to do with Android.....
Google said that currently only the US English is supported and working for the voice features.
The other accents, like UK English, and the other languages will be coming later.
But the good news with this, is that once the voice features are supported for a language, everything works - not only voice dialing, but also voice search, etc...
So I guess we just need to be patient.... at least google have already shown us that they are working fast.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Google voice search and the voice dialing within android are 2 different things
The voice dialing in my sgs is powered by the PICO TTS engine that was quite buggy in the eclair and remains buggy in the (beta?) froyo and it is even more unfunctional over bluetooth.
The same engine behaving differently when speaking via BT and when speaking directly to the phone. Even in the standard language
All Google did is install a 3rd party app within the firmware instead of developing a voice engine within the OS.
Or is this Pico app just a temporary thing until google get things done? And where is the article?

Ok seriously if you are that in love with symbian and Nokia why did you buy a new phone. one would assume it was because you were tired of your old one and wanted to try something new that's great that you did, but if your this unhappy quit being a fan boy and just return the damned thing already and get another symbian device

All of the voice actions are going to use the same engine.
I.ex: if you say "Call Joe" or "Navigate to Joe" or "Search for Joe" it's (obviously) the same engine. (but your phone doesn't have this engine yet).

Currently, if you talk with a US accent it is working beautifully. But if you use another language or a UK accent it just falls on its face.
Anyway, once we get voice actions working properly in all of the languages Android will be 2 years ahead of Symbian & Co.

So I was right, 2 different things, both of them not working properly yet.
Firstly, during annoucements of Android 2.2 with a list of improvements, one of them was bluetooth voice dialing and of course they were reffering to the unfunctional or bad working Pico TTs engine; so bluetooth voice dialing is there but doesnt work properly and that's what I mean when I say "disappointing"
We are talking about the active engine, and not about something that will be ready someday maybe...
The whole issue with voice actions is another story and quite strange as well. What was that about accents?
If I use google voice search and I speak english with my brazilian/dutch accent and it understands me completely and never fails. why online search functions work even with my accent and the other functions won't? And for online search in english I was already usingo Vlingo on my old 5800xm almost 2 years ago
Seems to be it uses exactly the same technology of Vlingo or vice-versa, that means another toy thing.
But this thread has nothing to do with future possible solutions, it's about something that was supposed to work properly right now and it doesnt.
But who knows, our friend AllGamer is right; 2 years is not much and this is just a beta version?

There must be something android did right for you to have so much time to complain and still sticking with it.

Google actions is ready and working great. It was released 1 or 2 months ago.
But currently only US English is supported, this is why you don't have it on your Dutch/Brazilian phone.

There's nothing strange here. You are still using the old system that worked poorly and just don't have the new voice actions engine yet, that's all.
As for accents: UK friends of mine are getting 98+% accuracy (even when dictating SMS) when speaking with a US accent. With a UK accent it fails miserably. But this is normal, as UK English isn't supported yet.

Seriously, what we have now in US English is really amazing. Of course it still needs to get ironed out and all of the languages need to get supported. But Google is really moving fast.

Many things are going good, so, I wont complain about what is not going good? What about fake annoucements? Should users not complain about that? .... Critic is also a form of contribution. You can also see it as feedback; so my sgs will get better almost on a daily basis

It was officially announced: Finally voice dialing over bluetooth with Android Froyo 2.2 . Froyo is here, voice dialing over bluetooth can be activated but it's unfunctional...it doesnt work good.
Do you work for Google? So inform it to them.
And I also hope that voice actions will work offline
Cause I only use wifi and no internet in my car.
Proper voice dialing should work offline too

No. This is not the future. This is today. -> NOW<- and has been working for 1 month already.
For the 3rd time: it works in US English, but you can't install it in the other languages yet. Languages other than US are currently being implemented. FOR THIS REASON: it doesn't work on your Dutch/Brazilian phone, yet.
Of course it works offline (SMS & text dictating, local phone searches & actions) . But everything requiring an internet search (i.ex: google search and maps) will not render any results if you are offline, obviously.

That is the major flaw of the Android, it is so US centric (so have beena the most other US based, in the beginning).
It took 10 years from Microsoft to understand that
- there is other languages and alphabets in the World than the US English
- not all people uses 12-hour clock and mm/dd/yyyy date format
It took 10 years from programmers to understand that
- the applications should use the op-system date format, there is no need to take than by themselves
The Android is far from perfect, it is moderate even in basics. It is not 2 years behind, it is 5 years behind. My Android date format is dd/mm/yyyy, yesterday I add the birthday to my contacts, the date format is dd.mm.yyyy, why? That is the most stupid thing among other date mass about.
I hate those stupid US things, but I can live with those (for a while).
Hi I tense to agree with you, android is still a premature system, for instance the network connectivity switch just terrible with sgs compare to my old n97. And the worst thing sgs has a crap gps like n97

I don't know what problem you are having with network connectivity. Even on my HTC Kaiser , which is a 3 years old Windows Mobile 6 phone that was not made for android at all, network switching is working perfectly with Froyo.

According to the latest tests posted in the gps threads, this issue seems to be fixed in the latest beta firmware (the official release is scheduled for this month). They compared it with the HTC Hero, the Nexus One and the iphone 4. The SGS tracking is now doing as well, and its getting a lock in about 10 seconds. (check the gps poll thread)
Is it advisable to purchase any particular app from the Samsung App Store or should one buy it from the Android Market?
In my opinion, one should prefer to buy any particular app from the android market rather than Samsung Appstore which is yet to grow with even basic professional relevance!!!
I am saying this after I have had this experience...
Last week I bought SPLASHTOP REMOTE DESKTOP from Samsung App store on my Galaxy Note for about 0.99 USD. There were few noticeable differences:
First thing I immediately noticed was that the version I downloaded (1.6.0.5) was OLDER than the corresponding one available (1.6.5.6) on Android Market.
Still I preferred to buy the app from Samsung App store as it was much cheaper (0.99 USD) as compared to the one available on android market (USD 4.99).
Just two days after this I noticed the CERAMIC WHITE model of NOTE and of course could not resist the temptation of owning it, so gifted my (erstwhile) dark blue NOTE to my bro (after factory resetting it!!!, which my bro is now using with all his relevant google/samsung account credentials!!)
And this is where I learnt that because I "changed" my device, I can not REDOWNLOAD my "purchased" app from SAMSUNG APP STORE despite regitering with same Samsung Apps account!!. This is so very weird, as I have been seamlessly transitioning my all apps to my all new devices just by ensuring that I have the same google/android account registered on my new device.
I tried to restore my app through Kies, but in vain, then I tried to get in touch with customer support at Sumsung App Store and which is when I noticed that that they have a very LOUSY and LAME UI, that just leads no where.
Needless to mention, I purchased the app again, but this time from the android market. Although I had to shell out USD 4.99 (instead of 0.99), I find its worth it as now I have a app, that is LATEST VERSION (yes, in this example of splashtop, it has significant change of opting for custom resolution of native device), and that I will be able to use on as long as I want, even after I move over to any new device (of course there is nothing better than Galaxy Note as of now!!).
So in conclusion, Samsung App store SUCKS while Android Market is far much ahead. Thus in my opinion, assuming all fundamentals remain uniform, its better to purchase an APP from ANDROID MARKET rather that Samsung App Store!!!

It is simple thing, Samsung application can be redownloaded to Samsung device only, (and it is even more strange when it not supports change of device.)
Android purchase will work with any Android device, if you change in future, as it is linked to your Gmail.
And thats Y i think, samsung store provides somwat cheaper thn Android Market. But in long term it cost more.
Very right dr.ketan, its indeed strange that it does not support device change too even if one changes to a different device of Samsung make!! And that's why I reiterate that although on one end they make superb devices as NOTE, on the other end soft serves like their app store, their kies... lack professional relevance

For me, the solution to this is... If I buy something, I own it (which is why I don't buy apple). I can make a back up of CD's, DVD's etc.. that I have paid for. It is the same with apps. I don't care if I'm slated/criticised/abused, after I have bought an app I will find an apk on the net as a backup should I change my phone or flash it. or use 'app backup and restore'.
I have spent far too much time in the past with customer (don't)care trying to find out if they would let me redownload apps I have purchased when I change my phone..

As I have experienced, you may change or hard reset you device unlimited times and still you will continue to enjoy the benefits of being a licensed user of the app, and thus you will be able to download it unlimited times, as long as you continue to have android OS and the same GOOGLE account.
As far as developers support is concerned, I have no precise idea on this, although I feel the support depends on developers commitment to the product. May be I should add here that as I have seen in last 2 years (ever since I am using android) I have been getting updates to my older apps even now, if at all there is a newer version.
Even on the Android market you can have trouble if either google or the developer remove the paid app or release a different version then the old app you purchased is no longer there so if you change your device then you are stuffed and either have to purchase your asp again or you won't get it. For example see the dice player which had paid versions but google removed it and now only free advertisement supported version is available.see comments section for the asp where paid customers are cribbing that now they can't instal paid app on new phone.
Loads of other examples like train times UK app had free version two years ago without ads but later was removed and new paid version came up but when you get new phone then the old asp no longer existson the market.
I have been in contact with Samsung Customer service, UK, Spain and Poland... The thing is they are not able to give me an answer and in my opinion they are lost about this problem.
Main advertised apps/widget for the NotePro 12.2 are missing in UK, Spanish and Polish firmware. Do you have this apps available on your Magazine UX??

I read several sites and forums, and the explanations given are devoted to the new agreement between Samsung and Google. Seems that Google wasn't too happy about the Mag UX.
May I ask you for your opinion about this??. Why the user always has to lose when it comes about benefit of multi-nationals?. I understand that every company will look for maximize their benefit, and we already paid a good amount of money for this tablet... but we should get (at least) an explanation or official information about why Samsung:
1 - Is delivering the new devices without all app/widgets available?. Or at least let people find it and install them.
2 - If the number of apps/widgets comes deliberately limited, why don't let us uninstall the Mag UX?.
I know if I spend some time following other threats I will be able to install other launchers, or root the Tablet and install more Mag UX apps..... the points is, I paid for a device that it should be ready to work/productivity ( see Ces2014 presentation of Samsung were they describe the meaning of Pro devices ).
Maybe instead of losing my time with Samsung Customer Service I should do what other NotePro users did, and customize my tablet by my own....

I installed Apex as my very first app, and as such Magazine UX is entirely irrelevant to me. I don't have access to it, nor do I feel the need to have 4-6 massive single-coloured blocks on my screen. Magazine UX is the worst thing to come to Touchwiz since Touchwiz itself.
If I wanted a screen that looks like Godzilla vomited Lego, I would've bought a Windows tablet.
I've disabled Samsung Hub, Weather Widget and most of the other bloatware, so I can't test either way.
Samsung isn't selling it with a clear text saying "We promise all these Apps". So there's not a single legal thing you can do about it. In fact, I'm fairly sure the promo video had a "Apps not available in every country" message somewhere in there.
Samsung is delivering the devices without all the bloatware because people asked for less bloatware. You can't have both. And because there are parts of the world, a great many, where copyright organisations are more powerful than the governments, and as such they simply can't. Most European countries beings amongst those.
As for why they don't let us uninstall it, for the same reason Google hid the developers options under a 7x tap. Because 99.99% of the users are complete technological retards who click on everything they can set their sights on, don't think it through and then blame Samsung(or Google) when something goes horribly wrong due to their own incompetent actions. Most of them are too stupid to link "Delete this Launcher section" to the consequential vanishing of said screen. Hell, most of them barely know what a launcher is to begin with.
Keep in mind that installing another launcher will disable Magazine UX.

Obviously this presents many challenges, the lack of google's presence amoung the top. So my story is how I managed to install almost everything (except play store) and how now I can do just about everything I wanted without rooting.
The trick was to find apps that simulate or sync within the web and they trick the HDX into thinking it has a google account installed. This has allowed me to access gmail, google calendar, search, tasks and more. I even got wifi text messaging working, which is a big deal for me.
Finally, I found the perfect launcher that replaces the tedious Amazon interface. I'm not kidding. You wouldn't tell the difference between a rooted HDX and mine.

Yup - I ran native (unrooted) Fire OS 3.2.6 for nearly a year before moving to a different rom. It's quite possible (and often rather easy) to either sideload play store apps or find high quality equivalents that duplicate the best from google. Some I still use today even though I have full access to the play store. Toss in a few Xposed modules and life is pretty sweet. That said, there was always the challenge of dealing with new versions or accommodating the various limitations inherent with Fire OS. I think the story here is an unrooted HDX can be still be a useful/productive tool but the work effort definitely goes up once you step outside the Amazon ecosystem.

Finally, I found the perfect launcher that replaces the tedious Amazon interface. I'm not kidding. You wouldn't tell the difference between a rooted HDX and mine.

Is there an "How To Do It" tutorial

As the title says, I'm a total Android noob. I tried a droid phone many years ago, but found it irritating and fiddly, and went with an iPhone. I'm no fan of Apple, but it works pretty good, and as long as I was able to jailbreak the phone, I was OK with it. I think the future of JB for iphone may well be at the end of the road. If I ever have to replace or reload my iphone, then I lose my JB & I'm locked into Apple's walled garden. Unacceptable, as then I lose my ad-block and other items that make the device tolerable.
Realizing that my current iPhone is very likely my last, I snagged a Samsung Galaxy Tab A SM-T580 to see if I could learn to live with Android. One of my biggest issues with Android is Google. I despise Google and avoid using Google & their services to the greatest extent possible. (Yes, I know, flames and criticism headed my way for saying that ).
I don't want anyone's cloud, mail or other services.; I have my own servers for caldav, mail and file services. I want a stripped down, unbloated, and ad blocking android experience that is as free as possible from google or 3rd party services.
I understand there are other images (Cyanagen, AOKP, etc) but I don't know enough about any of this yet to know what I'd be getting into there.
But as a start, following a guide found here on XDA, I have rooted the tablet, and using Titanium, removed a good bit of the bloatware. I notice that since rooting the tablet, there is a 6 - 8 second delay after entering the pin code and hitting OK before the tablet unlocks. Not sure what that's all about.
There's a lot to learn and a lot of mis-information out there. It's hard to find a straight answer. Any tips or info appreciated as I try and figure out how to get as close as possible to my goal.

My advice.
Ignore built.prop mods. I haven't seen any empirical evidence to prove it does what people say it does. Infact I've read more to say its bolony. However, I did find 3c toolbox improved my battery life on my Galaxy s5 with lineage os installed.
I managed to remove google from my android box. Use aptiode for an app store.
Download F droid,
Install newpipe YouTube client. Then ads are banished forever.
Install ad-away. Helps block ads on browser.
I use mi-explorer.
Don't use greenify or clean master they don't help.
With 3c toolbox and root you can remove a load of rubbish. My basic M8S runs really great with google removed.
I would recommend lineage OS, I have it running on 3 devices so far. I'm the nougat Aosp from this forum on my tab 10.1.
