Burning heat - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had intense heat in phone during my early purchase this month. Later after OTA update, the heat was completely gone. Today, all of a sudden heat started again and battery drains in 30 minutes, yes 30 minutes. Nothing new installed. Any reason?

Note 3 has so many issues i hate n3

I like it for productivity. But this issue is quite very disturbing. Never had such in note 2 and it's battery was awesome. How do we fix it looks exchange service eats more.

I have same issue
my note 3 is very fast in discharging
when i have fully charged in 100% after a few minutes nothing touched it goes 99% then on keep browsing it goes 98% with an extra heat also..
this is only happen if you are on the stock kernel
i think the stock kernel for note 3 must be adjusted for battery saving...like note 2

Turn off animations. Dim the brightness . That solved both battery and overheat and lag issues for mr.
Sent from Note 3 (The beauty & beast)

I just noticed that brightness is already set to auto and it's less than 50%. Let me further reduce it
By the way where is animation option?
So bad to do all these to make battery survive. Samsung should have thought these well ahead before pushing so quick on new products.

By the way any ways to disable e change services which eats my battery heavily?

Exhange Services is any email account and calendar sync other than Gmail&Google Calendar. To turn it off, get rid of those. Not ideal. Putting them all on manual sync does the trick too.
As for the spontaneous heat, sounds like IndexingService.

I never had this problem earlier after recent update. Started heating up from yesterday only. Putting my corporate email to manual defeats my purpose. What's the indexing thing you mentioned?
I try calling Samsung support and they insisted to bring all kits by Monday. Will keep it posted here.

Same here! This is the second day I'm using Note 3 and this didn't happen on Note II.
Now I disabled all Dropbox syncs, and disabled ALL sensors movements and just let enabled the s pen commands. Reduced the brightness to the minimum also. But it's still hot, even after rebooting.
I will disconnect charger and go out and see if, like yesterday, the battery will drain. Oh! And, by the way, I didn't charged it when I went to sleep and when I woke up I noticed that from 3AM to 8AM my battery dropped from about 40 to 7 and then stopped going down, but when I started using it battery drain started so fast again until it turned off.
Now I just made a full charge with the device turned off and let's check what will happen today with this new settings...

While I'm not happy to see others with this problem of their note 3 heating up its kinda good to know now that I'm not the only one with this problem. I posted about this also over on the tmobile n900t thread and I got a very good reply(useful mod) back from a member that seems to(so far) keep my device cooler than it was getting while extreme gaming on device.

[Q] Battery question

My battery is acting very strange because soon as its fully charged within a few seconds after unplugging it drops to 99% straight away without me touching it. Anyone know if that is normal or a faulty battery? I've been using my Note 2 before upgrading to Note 3 but never seen this quick drop before :crying:

no mine not doing that, have you given it a full discharge at all yet
Probably a calibration issue

Even when it says 100% let it be on charge for 5 10 mins. Then u might see the difference.
Sent from Note 3 (The beauty & beast)
Sorry... My Note 3 doesn't do that.
It stays at 100% for like 2 hours of light use then drops to 99% after a while.
The shortest I have seen my Note 3 stay at 100% is like 30 minutes. Cuz I was playing Real Racing 3
Thanks for the reply lads, I'II give it a few more charges to see if its goin to improve it but I suspect its a faulty battery.

battery issue.!

Guys i have the snapdragon version note 3..
I have big issue with the battery. I currently have 82% with only 23mins of screen time and wifi on.! I am using stock rom rooted. The phone is 3 days old..
Any fix?
Thnx in advance
I also had this issue. Run the phone down to 0% and then fully charge, then run to 0% again. This refreshed or calibrates the battery counter and my battery life went from 2 hours screen on to about 9 or 10

Questions should go in Questions and not in General.
Also keep in mind that a Power-Off and then Power-On cycle is pretty battery intensive - 2-3 reboots can take well over 5% of your battery.
Same issue here. Im forced to run ondemand at 1500 max to save some juice until samsung fix their crap

For me it's always unticked, also all google locations, nfc, bluetooth, GPS, data sync, all motion sensors and whatever else disabled. No bad apps, all greenified, no bad wake up logs.
Everything is normal. I almost never play games and use it just for browsing.
2 possible battery drainers:
Bad firmware or Google Play Services. I don't know what's causing it but since MJ7 everything sucks.
I'm currently doing full discharge (since I always plug it when it's around 10-20% left). It's now at 1% and I'm playing games like mad and it's 15 minutes already and still hasn't turned off. Possibly bad battery calibration?
Put cool tool on your phone.
tick show most CPU intensive process
Kill most CPU intensive process.

[Q] Battery Drain by "Android System"!! please help!!!

At first "Android System" was like 25% which was okay i guess, I still felt like the battery is not so good.... it drained fast...
But today with moderate use I got from 100% at 7:00 to 5% at 17:30! (and I charged for like 10 minutes with a 1A charger which didn't help a lot)
when I checked the battery stats, "android system" was 43%!!!!
Even when im not using the device I see that the battery goes down very fast! even though I clean the apps in the background a lot!
Maybe i turend on some setting that really drains the battery?
What can I do to fix this?
I have to mention that these stats are with power saving mode turned on!
This is such a disappointment... I hope it can be fixed cuz I expected a lot more from the phone's battery..
Also - I dont know if it helps, but the devices tends to get hot even when not using it...
and the screen is almost always on very low brightness
Attached are screen shots with the detais about "android system"
Check out my thread dude I have the same problem except nowhere near as bad as urs. I thought 20%-25% was a lot but damn 40%+ is insane. I think it's a kitkat problem or something.
A factory reset may help you though.

un-sync your samsung account and uninstall the samsung app store. YMMV, worked for me. :good:
I had this problem, too. Are you using Google+ to backup your photos? Turning off auto-backup made a massive difference for me. I've also switched off Google Now and location reporting, and both made a big different. By Galaxy S5 was burning through battery life before, but it's been pretty impressive since I made those changes. And I still have Samsung Apps activated and my Samsung account in sync.

do you have "restrict background data" ticked on power saving?
and yeah make sure GPS, Bluetooth is off too, only use when needed.
my battery on my s5 lasts 2 days of fairly heavy use
turning off mobile data/wifi when you don't use it significantly reduces android system and android os usage.
it isn't really a solution, but it is a work around.
I also have a problem I posted this on another members thread -
I have also had this problem, I have not changed many settings since day 1 of owning this phone - nfc data bluetooth & sync off, Wifi scanning all the time only when charging & drains so much during the night! Last night I was on 42% at 21:50 then at 22:50 it was on 23% then at 23:50 it was on 15% & at that point I put ultra power saver on, which said I would have 1 day of power left.... I checked again at about 01:00 & my phone had run out of battery & shut down! Today I am taking back my phone to the shop & am demanding a new handset, I think I may have just had a faulty S5? Also my phone was getting quite hot at night in my pocket & also had a problem sometimes when powering on with the power button to wake the phone nothing happens & got stuck in ultra power mode a few times & rebooted? Other than this I love the S5 & hope my new handset is perfect? IT BETTER BE? [emoji35]

Let me know if they give you a new handset...
I sent an email to support, they told me to bring the device to the lab to get it checked....
cant they just give me a new one and thats it? -_- ughh
Went to the EE shop like I was told on the phone from customer services but they were unhelpful & then had to phone customer services back but then all they could do was send me another battery & not give me another handset yet! but not until after the weekend which by then my 14day return with no questions asked would be up & I would be bound to a contract for 24 months.... So i told them to stick there contract & thanks for wasting my time & lieing to me, so gone over to O2 contract a few hrs later & I must say I am happier with them, I even asked if they could unlock my phone to any use any sim & was told just ring customer services & they will do it free of charge!!!! (I was very surprised), anyway charged my battery for about 6 or & a half hrs & have had 22hrs battery life so far with loads of Web viewing, Wifi on most of the time & still have 27%. Loving this phone [emoji106]

[Q] N9005XXUFNF4 my battery drain is worse.(SORRY didn't see no Q)

Hi all.
This phone is becoming a joke, it seems that with every update Google or Samsung are crippling this phone.
N9005XXUFNF4 was supposed to improve battery life on the Note 3, so why is my battery drain worse?
I bought the Note 3 to do away with netbooks and tablets, but now I am being forced to use them again.
When I use the internet, browsing on the Note 3 itself, my battery can lose 50% in under 30 minutes. I am then forced to switch off data out of fear that the phone will not last the day.
However, when I tether a notebook or a tablet to the Note 3, it will give me about 8 hours of internet usage before it needs charging.
So what is the point of the Note 3 now? It is quickly becoming just an expensive modem.
Mine is worse too but not as yours. I want some solution.

Simply solution. Flash skyhigh kernel and U will have 10 hours screen on time. Or 3 days normal usage. .
I'm always doing stuff on internet. Mobiledata/WiFi I think thats why it drains faster.

Faulty hardware? No. Faulty update or flash, most likely.
By using simple tools to monitor your battery usage, you could trace and eliminate problems. I use BetterBatteryStats.

No.
1. KK ruined battery life so you can't get over 6 hours of screen on in 4.4.2 unlike 4.3.
2. Different devices have different quality chips. You can't guarantee same results.
3. Show me your 10 hours screen on time with no underclocking or undervolting, or even a screen cap of 3 days of normal usage (Facebook, Whatsapp, Tapatalk)

I suggest AuroraKernel v11R2 , i can simply go thru a day with my data and wifi on
Thanks everyone.
Unfortunately this phone has not improved. I can tether all day, but if I use the phone for what it was designed for, i.e, browsing internally it drains quicker than my bath.
I now have the most expensive phablet acting as a modem for other tablets, this really defeats the whole point of buying this phone.
I have been with Samsung since the GS3, but now my next phone will not be another Samsung.

Life expectancy?

How long can one expect a device such as the note 3 to last. Let's say the device in question never is dropped or mishandled. Now with heavy use on a daily basis would you expect all internals and externals to perform flawless for 5+ years. What would the max be. Looking for answers from people who know not guessing please. I'm just curious as many probably are as well. Thank you for all the views and responses.

I am not sure. I am on my second note 3 now since they seen to have an use with the sandisk ultra micro sd card. The phone cooked itself while charging. I can't speak to the actual internals, qa process in the factory and expected life expectancy resulting from those either being robust our weak.

I would not expect this device to last 5 years. I've used this device heavily - every day - for almost a year now. So far the plastic chrome overlay around the outside has cracked near the volume button - and it was not dropped and it was in a case yet the plastic chrome cracked. I used superglue to patch that crack. Apparently, the silver plastic chrome cracking is not abnormal - especially near the S-Pen (though I never use mine so it didn't happen for me there). I've sat on my phone in bed once (I usually carry it in my back jeans pocket) and it showed no signs of problems - I'm a 5'11 220 pound male so I'm not small. The screen is holding up VERY well - no obvious scratches even though now I go case free (and have for months now).
Of all the phones I use (HTC MyTouch, Motorola Droid 1, HTC Thunderbolt, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, Note 3) - I give the Note 3 very high ratings for durability. It is extremely light - and the big screen allows me to do what I want without hinderance.
Will it last 5 years? I doubt it mostly because of software reasons (most Android phones stop getting updates around 5 years out). Will it last 2 years? I'm betting on it - not planning to upgrade till 2016. Happily running Alliance Rom Build 1 - impatiently waiting for Build 2.
I'm running an Anker (stock sized) battery from Amazon - and for the price - will get a new one next year to keep the thing "fresh"
Thanks for the responses so far. Very good posts. I have had mine half a year it's still in mint condition. I use a neo hybrid case with no screen protector use to use one but I take care of my devices. If I was a dropper I'd have a glass screen protector and otter case lol. I was running alliance now trying jasmine 2.4 waiting super impatiently for a port of the note 4. Yes my last device Droid 4 lasted 3 or 4 years then it went haywire. Hoping my phone lasts awhile interested to see what the note line has to offer for the next few years to come.

No one "knows" relative to the Note3, it's only been out a year!
However....it is just another electronic product. It appears well built, depending on how often it's charged....over 5 years you may need one or two new batteries but they're user-replaceable.
AMOLED displays should last 8 to 10 years and flash memory should last for about 200,000 write operations.
In other words....it should easily last 8 to 10 years....the "life" of its least reliable, non-user replaceable component.
That presumes the cellular service providers still support the current protocols.

I'd say you have a dead (shorted) battery. Pull the battery and plug into charger....will it start now? If nothing else...unless you got it the day it came out, it should still be under warranty.

Read through at your own risk.
Pmfji, but I have had a similar experience. Set up my Note 3 to charge one night, went to sleep, woke up and I could fry a virtual egg on it. The temp was some ridiculous number I can't recall. Totally freaked, thought the thing might explode. Mind went into overload, gotta figure this out, before it burns out!
Kept repeating the mantra, "this is just a computer", over and over. In a former life I used to be a 'Wintel' power user or so I used to think.
Racing through all the possible scenarios, what could be the issue? I checked my tools, not only was the temp outrageous, but the CPU frequency was through the roof as well! Noting the super high temp over a long period—a few HOURS; finally, I thought to pull the battery.
For those who know, not an easy effort given a Zerolemon case (think Outterbox) and humongous, heavy battery amidst visions of seared flesh! ?
Battery out, I could think more clearly. Letting the thing sit and cool for a half hour or so. I sat hoping, whatever the issue, the battery pull killed it. While I struggled to put my foggy brain into overdrive. Not the way to start the day, before breakfast and before my first cup of coffee! Imagine, wake up, grab the phone, cut the alarm, then ? wtf!
Thinking on it, I figured it had to be a problem with some very recent software installed on my—Rooted, Xposed, and otherwise stock Note 3. Could it be one of the Xposed modules??
I had, a couple of days before, after a short stint with 3c's "Battery Manager", swaped it for 3c's "Toolbox Pro" (which among MANY, MANY, MANY tools includes the Battery Manager Pro).
Daunting, comprehensive apps both, of which my primary focus was, at the time, facilitating the Battery Manager so it would provide relatively useful and accurate readings of the Zerolemon's 10,000 mAh battery level at any given time. An effort which was driving this tinkerer absolutely batty! ???
So, after several courses of, pull the battery, think a little, place the battery, watch, feel the temps rise, and pull the battery, the damned thing just would not stop! Finally, I used Toolbox Pro's "CPU Manager" and "Task Manager" to determine which app was monopolizing the CPU percentage use/time; and, concurrently causing the insane CPU frequency, and ultimately frying my phone. Needless to say, the device was not only super hot, but irritatingly sluggish which made this a tediously slow process.
Anyway, culprit found,Titanium Backup and that app was history. Actually, that may have been my first use of Toolbox Pro's "App Manager". One or the other….
Which app was it? Unfortunately, I do not recall, maybe a record is in the logs. How high did the temps go? Again, can't recall, I can vouch it was higher than any temp I had experienced on a Note or any computing device. How's my Note 3? Well it was, well—fine! Showed no consequences, nothing.
That is til I screwed the sound/volume (Wanam and another Xposed module poorly coincide when both utilize the volume button to trigger different functions), but that's another story.
For the record, I am on my FOURTH Note 3!! My present and last Note 3 is suffering the same sound/volume issue, a tinkerer's fortune. Though my first ROM flash should correct that issue.
Hmmm, now how do I flash?? Odin (isn't that a Norse g_d?), TWERP (isn't that some sort of butt humping??), SafeStrap (isn't that a sexual device hung from a ceiling beam??), duhhhh another confused newb….
Thanks to anyone bothering to read through the above.
You said it yourself you left it on the charger all night and woke up and it was hot. You can't leave a phone on a charger all night sleep for 8 plus hours that would fry it and it would be hot overcharging is really bad.

I leave my phone plugged up overnight, every night. I have had a replacement phone because the proximity sensor failed, but I've had this one for ~6 months and it's never overheated or done anything like above. Battery life is still great.
+1. Never had a problem with any device charging overnight, be it phone, tablet or laptop.
I leave my Note 3 plugged up All Night, EVERY Night. Anywhere from 5-12hrs depending on the day of the week & how many beers I drank the night before. I've NEVER had anything close to that happening. I do have a Great Battery app, Battery Doctor but I don't think it would stop that from happening if it happens so easily/frequently by charging them to long.as you suggest. There was definitely something funky going on with this guys Note 3. My Note 3 got REALLY Hot one time, while I was at work & it was Off the charge. I actually got a System Temperature Notification that it was over heating. I clicked on my Battery app & it had already found the culprit. I had turned Off Google+ Auto Backup Pic/Vids feature about 2 months prior to this. That morning when I got to work I turned it back on. Google+ started backing everything up at one time, >10gb. & started to Heat it up. The app now will Not backup everything at once unless you click the backup at once option. That was fixed in one of its updates.
