New to Sliding Messaging and like the UI but I'm not getting any notifications of SMS messages and worthless without it.
This was the only SMS other than stock that I had installed. After installation on my unrooted N3, I don't receive notifications at all... no led, vibrate or ringtone. Test notification in the settings of the app worked, but not when messages arrived.
I tried a number of settings within the app such as over-ride the stock app and still no go. In fact the stock SMS notifications stop working even after uninstalling SM. Notifications worked again after I installed handscent but I really just want SM working by itself.
A number of reviews mention similar problems but the developer who replys quickly just keeps blaming it on other SMS apps even after I told him there weren't any other ones installed prior to SM.
Anyone else using SM on the Note 3 having this problem or know of a fix?
Go to settings then security then notification access abs give it access. Not sure if that will work but worth a try.

Settings> App Manager >scroll right to "all" > Pick messages.
is it on? check show notifications
if you don't see it in "all" then its probably off and is in the "Turned OFF" section

This did it. Thanks for the help. Is this new to JB 4.3? I've never seen/needed this setting on my SGIII before.

Hey gang,
I've just installed Handcent and its very Awesome indeed so I want to make this my default SMS/MMS app.
My question:
How can I stop the HTC Message app from running in the background and, presumably, eating battery/CPU cycles.
I've turned off notifications for the HTC Message app so I only receive SMS notifications from Handcent but I want to kill the HTC Message app permanently. I should also say that I don't want to delete or 'un-install' it.
Thanks for any ideas,
E
BTW: Handcent is sweeeeet for those that haven't tried it. Big recommend!
get a task manager to stop any app you'd like.
The bug with the HTC messaging app was activated by sending a message through it. So if you haven't *sent* one through it since rebooting the device, it shouldn't eat hardly any resources.
I find that I get double notification sounds.
I'm sure although switched off, the HTC Messaenger is still sending the notification sound through.
Either that or Handcent is doing it twice :-(
You need to disable notification from the internal app. All Programs < Messages < Menu < Settings < Uncheck auto-retrieve & uncheck Notifications.
Thanks very much for this post
I came to ask the same question and you had already asked it. My problem is solved.
And yeah...Handcent is super sweet! \m/
Anyone know how to remove messaging from the phone permanently and just have handcent?

So i just went to that website and it was another forum which a guy said to go to another forum which didnt answer the question. So i just tryed it out and removed Mms.apk and replaced it with handcent and everything works.
I know this is an old post but i figured i would update it with the answer for future searchbutton users

Ideas To Disable Default SMS App - Android
We're devleoping an SMS app for Android and are looking for ways to disable the default SMS app (all handset types).
Besides having the user manually disable notifications and auto-retrieve, any input on integrating and automating this with our SMS app or better ideas. Thank you.

I had the problem for a couple days after getting my hero. I connected it to my task killer. Here's some stuff you can try.
reboot and try agian
make sure auto recieve is on
update your prl
download 3rd party messenger app
restore to stock
if still screwed up... contact sprint
I haven't had the first problem with my sms's after rooting and installing a modaco's rom
Make sure you enable auto-retreival of sms and mms in whatever messaging app you're using and report back to us.
well i updated the prl. i have no idea what that is, but apparently it worked. did that and rebooted and it seems to be working fine now.

Few steps:
1. Go in to the default Messaging app > Menu > Settings and uncheck retreive sms and mms > uncheck notifications
2. Home > Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage > Messaging > Clear Defaults
3. Go to the people app, do like your going to send an sms message, a pop up will come up asking which app yyou'd like to do this from > check-mark default and select your preffered messaging app
4. paypal me $1

UPDATE: BALLS!!! it don't work... :/
what does work is under people > contact > hold down on send message and you can choose default
I just started having this problem after doing the root and modaco rom. I have tried a PRL update, hard reset, and numerous soft resets, verified my auto-receive settings and have tried the stock app as well as handcent.
Any ideas?

Notifications are turned off by the following:
Go into the Default Messaging app (HTC's buggy one)
Menu > Settings > Scroll Down and Uncheck Notifications
well it went from working earlier today to not working again. i cant figure it out. nothing changed and at somepoint today,i stopped getting my texts. my wife called me from work wondering why i hadnt gotten back to her cos she had texted me 3 times. i was texting with her back and forth earlier in the day and now nothing. they send fine. i just stop getting them

Are you saying you removed the stock messaging application? If so, my understanding is that would be very problematic at best. Unfortunately the Hero still uses some code from the default Messaging app (even if you are using Handcent SMS or Chomp and have it set as the default SMS client)
"Long time listener. First time caller"
not the stock messaging app, the stock app
So, the more I'm reading about this issue, the more it appears this is possibly a permanent problem on the device once it appears. I have tried everything and cannot receive a text.

Can you provide a list of all the sprint/stock stuff that you removed?
So I called sprint tech support today. The tech was pretty helpful and seemed to be familiar with the hero. After 30 mins of various tests he came to the conclusion that I had originally suggested (bluetooth causes low ROM) and asked me to exchange the phone at a local store because htc wants this "batch" of phones back.
I find it hard to believe this issue is limited to a "batch" of phones as that would indicate that they know exactly what is causing the problem and would be able to fix it.

I havent had any issues with bt. when my ipod dies i just switch and listen to music on my phone. using bt moto rokr s305, i believe.
I am having a right mare! I use Handcent, however I keep getting dual notifications. One from Handcent and one from the stock SMS App. I have turned off Notifications from within the stock App and still they come through.
I have even gone so far as removing the MMS/SMS App with root explorer and still they persist. It is frankly driving me mental. I want to keep ONLY the Handcent one.
Can anyone suggest anywhere to look? I am rooted with Pauls R10 Modaco ROM!
You forgot to disable notifications from the stock app settings which I believe are connected to but not accessible from the stock settings.

Same issue I had. I went into the stock messaging app, under menu, settings, notifications, unchecked the box. That worked for me.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
As per the original title I have gone into the Stock App and settings menu from there and disabled them and they still pop up.
You actually did not mention that and frankly I'm inclined to believe that it is still the issue as there would be no other reason I can think of why they would be coming up.

On second thoughts I wonder if this is coming from Elsewhere
If I enable notifications in the stock App I get The smiley face symbol with sender name and message, Handcent notification AND a 3rd one which seems to be the problem one. This simply sats You have New Message(s) You have an unread message. Also when the SMS is read this does not go away either
So where the hell is that one coming from LOL?

You mean when you enable notifications you get a 3rd popup that is the smiley face in a chat bubble? What happens when you open the unknown notification? What app opens? And if its the stock messaging app, try clearing its defaults.
That is correct about the smiley face chat bubble. When the notification pops up it will open up Handcent. I have tried clearing the defaults as well with no joy.
i had this problem when i was using Handcent
so i removed it
now i'm using GO SMS, same as handcent but better, and it does not have the problem that handcent was having
i only get 1 sms/mms alert instead of 2 when handcent is installed

Hello All!
I've been having this problem for a few weeks now and im all out of ideas of what to do.
Carrier: T-Mobile
Wearable: S3 Rugged
Extra Service: DIGITS
Coming From: LGV20 which never had these issues with the same plans and accesories
So to start, when i got the phone inittially during setup of the google accounts i noticed that my OTP SMS Pushes were not being received, or auto filling the information. I skipped past all of that and noticed that anywhere that OTP text were suppose to autofill in different applications, it would not even when i received the text and got a notification.
So after a while of using TEXTRA which was working fine, one day i stopped receiving ALL text not just mms. I was able to send but never was I able to get anything from anyone. I ditched TEXTRA and went back to the stock Samsung app and noticed that all text were there, even though it was not default. After using the Samsung messages app i decided to go back to textra, heres whats funny. After Textra did it's initial setup, it only showed half of the recieved text from up to that day. Messages were incomplete, some just had one reply from a user and nothing else. So I also tried this with Android Messages and it had the EXACT same message log as textra. Both were not receiving the full logs from the server. Today Android Messaging was working for a good part of the day, then it just stopped all of sudden again.
Can someone help me with this, I've wiped the cache and factory reset the phone. Ive added and removed the multi-line settings in the samsung settings. I've tried the legacy settings on textra. I've called the DIGIT's customer service to see if they could fix it but they made and interesting point that it couldnt be digit because it wouldnt interfere with 3rd part messaging apps. When i switch apps i always make them default, i wipe the app cache etc.
I have a gut feeling this has something to do with something with the default Samsung Messages app and it somehow restricting use outside of it.
I just wanted to reply and say that I've been experiencing the exact same issue and haven't had any luck Google engineering my way around it. For me, I'm seeing the issue with Signal, so I don't believe it's the 3rd party app's problem. I can send messages (SMS/MMS), but the Samsung Messages app is the only one that "receives" them. A strange workaround I found was to download Android Messenger, set that as the default messaging app, then set Signal as the default messaging app again. This worked for a while, but I think the Samsung Messages app recently updated, and it broke this again until I repeated the above workaround.
It's annoying enough that, without a fix, I'll definitely be flashing a completely stripped ROM on this phone once we have the ability to do so to get away from all of the Samsung apps that I can't disable. And don't even get me started on Bixby...

I haven't had any issues with my At&t model...Been using Yaata since day one (about 2 months).
Also, there are some "package disabling" apps in the play store that will allow you to disable any app you want, you don't even need to be rooted. It cost me $1.99 (or around there), but was well worth it! You can even completely disable Bixby, so the button is even non-responsive.
Having the same issue and I may have fixed it. I logged completely out of Digits on the phone (settings/cloud accounts/multi line/hit the ... menu and choose log out.
I have this same issue. No matter which 3rd party SMS app I use I have missing text messages on the T-Mobile S8. Has anyone fixed this? It is driving me crazy. T-Mobile replaced my S8 and the new one does it (not as bad but it does it more than I'd like). How can I resolve this? My friend haf the same issue, he has an unlocked T-Mobile working on AT&T.
I don't use Digits or anything like that... any ideas?
hi guys
all you need to do
go to setings
device maintence
battery
scrool all the way down to unmonitored apps and add your 3rd party sms app
youre welcome
This still didn't work for me and I am having the same exact issues. I have tried installing 2 different 3rd party messaging (Textra and Mood) and both were not working properly. I can send messages out just fine but when I receive them they are delayed (like 5 minutes or longer). Sometimes, I don't get the messages at all. Of course, the Samsung Messaging app (which I hate) works just fine. I have even "Force Stopped" it! What to do?
go into the stock messaging app, and turn off advanced messaging
Has anyone found a solution? I've been using textra for years & suddenly in March I started having this problem but with sent messages. All incoming texts are displayed but my sent texts aren't. I did try the 2 suggestions above. On a note 8, Android 8.0.0,Samsung experience 9.0.
SOLVED. I had the same issues and found the solution. Before you install your 3rd party sms/MMS you need to disable the default messenger. I uninstalled signal, disabled the built-in messenger, reinstalled signal. Now I can receive texts. Also my phone is not a Samsung.
On Friday, I installed an update on my stock V20 on Sprint. Since then, I get text notifications sometimes, but not always. I can't seem to pinpoint it. Not specific to certain contracts, not specific to SMS vs MMS (group).
The app icon shows the unread messages. But there's no notification tone/vibration or even an icon in the notification bar.
I have rebooted phone (as well as watch). I have cleared cache on messaging app.
Anyone else experiencing this or have in the past?
I am having the same exact problem!!! It is SO frustrating. No sound or icon in notification bar, just the number by the messages app button. This is happening all the time.

Did it just start with the recent update? I had ZERO issues prior. And it's not even consistent. Sometimes works fine. Other times I'm getting a text from my wife, then another, angry, one 15 minutes later for not responding ?

I backed up my texts just to be safe but then went into the play store and to the Android messages app. I hut uninstall and it asked if I wanted to uninstall all updates, I hit yes. Since then my notifications seem to be working ?! Hope this helps!

Didn't even think to check for an app update lol. I see there was one out there. Read some comments which reported same issue and then showed it was fixed after updating.
I just updated mine. So hopefully that just fixes it. If not I'll give your method a try. Thanks!
Update. Simple update of messaging app fixed issue. Doh
