I am having a right mare! I use Handcent, however I keep getting dual notifications. One from Handcent and one from the stock SMS App. I have turned off Notifications from within the stock App and still they come through.
I have even gone so far as removing the MMS/SMS App with root explorer and still they persist. It is frankly driving me mental. I want to keep ONLY the Handcent one.
Can anyone suggest anywhere to look? I am rooted with Pauls R10 Modaco ROM!
You forgot to disable notifications from the stock app settings which I believe are connected to but not accessible from the stock settings.

Same issue I had. I went into the stock messaging app, under menu, settings, notifications, unchecked the box. That worked for me.

As per the original title I have gone into the Stock App and settings menu from there and disabled them and they still pop up.
You actually did not mention that and frankly I'm inclined to believe that it is still the issue as there would be no other reason I can think of why they would be coming up.

On second thoughts I wonder if this is coming from Elsewhere
If I enable notifications in the stock App I get The smiley face symbol with sender name and message, Handcent notification AND a 3rd one which seems to be the problem one. This simply sats You have New Message(s) You have an unread message. Also when the SMS is read this does not go away either
So where the hell is that one coming from LOL?

You mean when you enable notifications you get a 3rd popup that is the smiley face in a chat bubble? What happens when you open the unknown notification? What app opens? And if its the stock messaging app, try clearing its defaults.
That is correct about the smiley face chat bubble. When the notification pops up it will open up Handcent. I have tried clearing the defaults as well with no joy.
i had this problem when i was using Handcent
so i removed it
now i'm using GO SMS, same as handcent but better, and it does not have the problem that handcent was having
i only get 1 sms/mms alert instead of 2 when handcent is installed

ok, so since doing the update to 2.1 me as well as everyone i know who have done this have had the problem of getting "failed delivery" notifications for almost all text messages even though they actually send, ive changed every setting i can possibly think of in built in messaging app and handcent
any help would be greatly appreciated, this is getting to be INCREDIBLY annoying
*228 SEND
Fixes alot of network problems. Pick option 1, wait for phone to restart, and see what happens.
tried that, with option 1 and 2, no go
i had the exact same problem, just rebooted the phone and it fixed itself (I also use handcent as my sms client, that might be where this bug is coming from).
This happens only with HandcentSMS or also with your stock messaging app? I had the same problem but only with HandcentSMS, the thing was it'd still be sending the message out an everytime I hit retry I ended up sending a duplicate message. Eventually the notifications became annoying and I switched to ChompSMS, haven't had a problem since.
I'm assuming it's solely a HandcentSMS problem an you just messed with your stock messaging options to see if that was the issue? Let me know.
It's something with the early 2.1 update on the Eris, it isn't compatible with something in the app, I'm not completely phone savvy so I'm not very technical with my terms but you get the idea.
I started getting this...so just switch from handcent to another sms app?
yeah im using chomp, or you can just ignore it because the message still sends it just doesnt register with the app as sending

it's handcent thats the problem, but it IS actually sending the message, the app just doesnt realize it
ok, so i "fixed" it, sort of, heres how
i uninstalled handcent, rebooted phone, reinstalled, set all settings, *228 option 1, rebooted phone
works 98% of the time now, completely bearable, to me at least

If you're talking about the popup when you receive a new message (with options to type a reply, open the message, call, etc.), then Chomp does have that capability; it's just turned off by default. In the settings, it's called "Quick Reply."

yeah, chomp does have it, i noticed though that i cant get it to make the messages private it'll pop up over the lock screen.
but if i miss the text an my screen goes off, its back to the lockscreen when i turn it on which is fine i prefer that, but it doesnt show the notification icon up top so sometimes i think i have no messages an wont even unlock the phone when i really do. maybe i overlooked the setting, but it shows up at first (the notification) and then its gone once the screen goes off an is turned back on
I purchased an evo for both me and my wife. A friend of mine did the same as well. It seemed like a good deal at the time and the phone seems to be good quality overall...
However, when messaging back and forth quickly, messages disappear from the thread and cannot be seen in any way. All that I receive is a notification. This has happened for all of us. Messages are also often received in the wrong order.
Would the situation be any better if I was using plain android instead of the buggy sense UI? It looks like the froyo rom is making good progress.. I'm going to try it, but if it's still as buggy as it is stock, Sprint will be getting 4 EVOs returned.
Try another messaging app like handcent or chomp. You have choices.
No problems here, and I'm on my 2nd Android phone. Both have worked great with no problems such as yours.
Seems like more of a rant then a request for help. that being said, my family has 5 Evo's between us and we have had not one complaint with the SMS. possibly sprint service in the area? i know when i'm in smaller towns the sms seems to lag, almost like its stuck in queue somewhere before being sent to me.
good luck mate!
Use Handcent. Problem solved. The stock app is slow and sucks.
If you hate it, go back to the iPhone where you obviously came from?
Now to try to find a question to answer within all that complaining....... hmmm... oh yes, I'm having issues with the SMS coming in odd orders occasionally. I did not ever experience this with my Hero.
So what I can derive from that is that this particular release of Sense, which is NOT Android, has a bug. You need to differentiate between the OS and the VERY deep reaching Sense UI that HTC puts on top.
I'd tell you to wait for the ROM development to pick up, but something tells me you're not a tinkerer. The iPhone is a fantastic phone.. you just can't tinker as much as you can with Android. So with Android you'll have choices but you'll have bugs. It's just something I come to expect.
It's like running Linux. Sure it's trendy to hate Microsoft, but holy hell there are a lot of problems with Linux apps in design, UI, and in general stability (Note, I didn't say Linux has problems.. I said apps. Because it's the crap on top of the underlying system I have complaints with). I still love it, I just have to approach it with an attitude that it's not going to be as polished as OS X, and it's not going to be as stable either.
Welcome to Open Source and the stuff people put out with it.
After hearing everyone praise handcent I decided to give it a try myself and wow is it better. Choice is very nice
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
Edited to remove ranting, I'll give handcent a shot. Hopefully it doesn't lose random messages =(.
I've gotten some messages out of order, but that's about it.
If I try Handcent and somehow don't like it, is it easy to revert back to the original built-in messaging app?

Just make sure you disable notifications in the stock app so you don't get double notifications. That's annoying.
Also, I haven't had any problems with MMS while using Handcent.

Thanks, I totally noticed that too. But it looks like if I disable notifications in the notification bar then it doesn't let me make sure it plays a sound.
Does handcent control that on its own so it doesn't matter if the sound is disabled on the stock messaging app?

Yea I have that problem alot I usually use built in messaging for MMS and handcent for all other SMS. I never have a problem receiving MMS with handcent just sending.
I prefer chomp, and have had no issues. well maybe one, or two texts out of order. Like if the sender typed a "two page" text and sent, then sent a short text the short one might come in before the second half of the "two page" text.

I ran some tests and I can send over 3g it's only when wifi is enabled. So I did some research and found out sprint only sends MMS over their connections. The default messaging app will bypass wifi and use 3g to send mms. Handcent had patched this for the Hero.
I'd like to put in a plug for ChompSMS. I hadn't used it before, but people were saying that it automatically resizes your pictures when sending MMS. Maybe this isn't a problem on the Evo, but it was on the Hero. I will occasionally get a text out of order if someone sends me a long one that is broken up into more than 2 messages. But, I really like it's interface better than Handcent, which I have also used. As far as I know, I have never had a text go missing when using Chomp.
Android is all about choice. It's really nice to have all these choices and these are FREE (as in beer).
Hello
Yesterday I updated the new firmware and since several hours I have a really big problem.
Every second SMS does not have a notification, sometimes it vibrates but there is no notification in the statusbar. So I have to open the SMS-App to see if I have a new SMS.
This really sucks! Anyone else with this problem?

it's not a bug with the firmware exactly, but rather the Messaging app. So if you download another sms app the problem will be solved. Im using Go SMS right now and no missed notifications yet. Ok so I'm on bonsai 1.1.3 with the new cwm and emotionless beast theme. This just started a couple days ago. When I get a new voicemail I then all of a sudden get a new text message. The text message is from 9016 and it says android ###-###-#### (the phone number that sent me the voicemail) has sent you a sprint voice message. Call 408-970-0000. Mmsn,106bee099,9fc6,v69bdosvezi//cm. This is just one example of one I got. Like I said it just started a couple days ago. Anyone ever had this and know what it is? It's really annoying when this happens. Thanks for your help!
Do you have the no bubble messaging app? Or the stock messaging app?

I have this too after I replaced the bubble MMS app with the white one with square pictures on the left (similar to a facebook chat looking thing). Looks like the evo sms app from what i've seen.
Is that whats causing it? All I did was push the Mms.apk from viperrom to bonsai 1.13
all you have to do is blacklist the number the text message comes from. Not sure if the stock app will do it, but handcent will.
I never changed my SMS or anything. I just updated the bonsai rom. As soon as I get my voicemail notification I get those new text messages.
This is happening to me as well.

I just have my VM setup to forward to my Google Voice number. That way I never get VM in my Sprint inbox - no fuss with visual VM either. You can use either the Google Voice app or have Google Voice send you a text.
Anybody know why its happening. Is it something in the bonsai rom cause.i havent messed with my sms and voicemail?

that is the visual voicemail to text thing it happens on all phones with vvm to text, call tech support tell them to block the number from texting and problem solved, i have to do this a few times a day d]since i do their tech support lol
Its from the messaging app with the rom. Its using the no bubble mod with the 5mb mod. I figured out that was causing it and just found a stock messaging.apk in the theme forums. Once you switch it out, call your self a couple times and you will notice the text after voicemail goes away.

I'm not positive, but I think if you are getting VM notification texts saying "call 408-970-0000(or any number)to listen to your VM messages, its because your voice mail isn't provisioned properly. The network doesn't realize your phone has visual voice mail, so its sending you a text to let you know to call to hear them. This happened to me a few times on my HTC hero when flashing cyanogen mod, and also a few times on my epic when i had a bad flash, or i had a poor signal on my first boot.
You should be receiving a message with a sort of code in it, something like {android}/noreply/notificationon(i don't remember the exact syntacs or message, but it will look something like that) it was caused by your MMS.apk.
When i had the provisioning issue, this is what i did to resolve it:
1. Dialed *38(resets VM to carrier in case it as setup to go to google voice, or other third party VM).
2. Open the VVM app
3. Hit menu
4. press Compose
5. in the "to" field put "[email protected]"
6. press record
7. as soon as the "send" button ungrays and ill allow you to, press it.
If this doesn't work you can try making a nandroid backup and odining to a stock rom, then re-rooting and restoring your nandroid.
Best of luck

I'm pretty sure this is google voicemail interfering with your regular voice mail. You need to go into gvoice and deactivate the number from going to google, and it will stop.
I'm using viper rom and get the same text message so it is not rom specific. I have tried the messaging.apk change and still get the messages. Does not appear anything is working so far to stop the texts

You problem is deleting the stock messaging app. It still delivers the text through OS, even though the actual app is no longer present. You should have kept it and told it to ignore.
You have to go into your stock messaging app, tap menu, then go to settings. Once in there you need to find "auto-retrieve" and unchecked the box. Then find "notifications" and unchecked that box as well
