I don't usually lock my phone when it's on standby. I usually just turn off the screen to save battery. I do that by pressing the red power button. Just wondering if there's an app that I can use to turn off the screen instead of pressing the button all the time?

Power option, you can set a time for the screen to go off.
If the device locks up, how do we power it down since the battery isn't so easy to pull?

Hold Volume + and Power at same time.
Hold the power key and the volume up key. I had a program freeze on me and found that with trial and error

Waking phone up with soft bottons wasn't possible, as all touch will disabled when phone goes sleep
(or else your phone will need to stay wake-locked and drains it's batt dry.)
A nice work around is using CM7 or CM9/10 and use Volume Rocker Wake option.

you can try waking it by volume rocker
