[Q] Media Scanner - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before I get lamblasted for not checking the other threads, I have read them all but not found a solution.
I have a S4 with a stock EE (UK) Rom which is currently 4.2.2 (come on EE where is 4.3!!). When I download or add a new ringtone or notification the Media Scanner does not pick it up and show it in the list. Whatever I try does not solve this problem.
I have downloaded every app I can find in Play Store to force it to run and whilst they report success the new ringtone is not found. I tried putting the ringtones onto the memory card rather than having in internal storage, still no luck. I have tried putting into the default folders (ringtones, notifications and alarms instead of Media>Audio>Ringtones etc) this also does not work.Rebooting does not work and neither does a hard reset.
The only way I can find to get the Media Scanner to work is to go to Settings>Application Manager and find the app and delete the data and cache, force close the app and then reboot. Which is just ridiculous when I simply want to add a new ringtone and has never happened on any of the other android devices I have owned.
Curiously photos are updated in the Gallery instantly.
Anyone have any ideas about how to cure this ?

Ringtones Cease Working

I've recently run into an odd error. Suddenly, the only ring that work is T-Mobile Defualt (sounds like a piano). I previously was using OldPhone.wma for the default ringtone with a few .MP3s for some contacts.
If I try using either Phone or Sound and Notifications in the Settings, it won't allow me to choose any other ring. If I do, it sets its back to Windows Default and further, neither app will close. I have to use the start menu to return to the Today screen.
I just installed the Custom Profile freeware app. This app recognizes all the old rings and plays them within it's own app but doesn't effect the phone when it rings. Basically, I'm stuck with this 1-ringtone.
I did some searching and noticed some apps might interfere with this. The only music-oriented app I've installed in iMusic, but I've since removed it and still no luck. I also tried the Ringtone Reg Hack to move the ringers to the Storage Card, but that's not working either. Is it possible to Phone and Sounds and Notifications apps are corrupt?
There is a good chance that Windows Media Player has lost its file association to .wma
To test if this is the cause of the problem, go to Start>Settings>Phone and change the Ringtone to something else. Before clicking 'ok' try to press play and see if it actually plays. If not, then WMP losing the association is probably the cause of the problem.
Keep us updated on your problem. If this is the problem, and you want help restoring the associations, just reply here

I failed to mention what you just said in my original post. The play button does not play the file; however, the Profile app does (I know you didn't ask that, just thought I'd mention it). How might I restore the associations and did this happen as a result of installing iMusic 2.10?
Thanks!
I did a Google search and figured out how to change the file associations via Resco File Explorer. Thanks!
Since you were so quick to respond, can you take a look at this threadhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44173? I'm have no e-mail at the moment.
Sorry, I can't help with regards to the other post.... I am not sure what the problem is.
I would suggest investing in Sprite Backup v5.1 as that is far more reliable.
I would suggest when you restore a backup after a ROM upgrade that you only restore your personal files and PIM; restoring programs or system files may cause problems like this
By the way, is the ringtone problem solved? I was going to ask you to use the attached CAB file to correct the extensions as Resco Explorer does not do it properly:

Custom sounds and ringtones

Am i missing something here? I get all the ringtones i use all setup and avialable in the various apps, then i reboot my phone and all the custom tones dissappear from all of the lists. Whats odd is that the ones that I have already selected still play and work just fine but they aren't in the various lists of available choices until i add them back in again. Is this normal??? Am i missing something??? It's extremely annoying to have to go back into the music player and press\hold all the different tones i want to use every time i reboot my phone.
Thanks,
Jeff
if your sd card is unmounted from the phone (i.e. you have it connected to your computer), they wont show on the lists.

Music Tap/ Ringtone/ Resco Expore Today Plugin Error

Hi Guys!
Did anyone of you experience these bugs happen together?
1. The ringtone suddenly disappear or no ringtone no sound but vibrate.
2. Play music from HTC Sense fail. Keep changing to the next songs until the album finish, but there's no sound playing. Even you select one song only but still cannot play anything.
3. If anyone of you have Resco Explore Today Plubin, you'll found out there's no icon showing at your today screen. But tap it it's working.
After few tests, I found out that these kind of problem can be recover from reset the connection through the "connection setup". Or restore my HD2 from another back up file from spb backup 2.
I discover these bugs will show up after I did these few things:
1 Bad reception for more then 10 to 20 mins.
2 After browning internet by using Opera 9.7 or Opera 10 beta 2 (I assume it's the internet connection problem)
3 Update the contact information from the contact> facebook update.
I'm using 1010 at HK and did install the CSL hotfix from HTC, before I though that it's the hotfix file problem, but someone using Smartone has experience the same bugs.
I tried to delete the all the registry from HTC sense regarding the music tap; delete the file under the folder Application Data> HTC> AudioManager_Eng. But still cannot have the music play from HTC Sense.
So anyone feel the same bugs? Pls share!!!!!
No body help??
any ideas?
I have the same problems with my phone. Does any of your media-files work? Does WMP open the files?
In my case
.WMP just won't open. (Not directly opening the app, or by opening a MP3 file.)
.No sound from the HTC Sense music-tab
.No ringtone what so ever. (Even after selecting a ringtone, my HD2 says i have selected no ringtone. Indicated by "None")
yes! these kind of bugs happen sometimes as well, really need help here....
I have the same problem!
No sound at all! Ringtone just says "none".
I am on a Dutch 1.48ROM and all I did was install JWMD Icon Changer and Brian's Taskbar, but I do not know if it is related to those apps.
This is the second time it happend to me!
First time i fixed it with a hard reset, but I hope there is another solution.

Vibrant "loses sight" of downloaded media periodically

My Vibrant periodically "loses sight" of media I have downloaded. I have downloaded ringtones off of zedge and podcasts through Dogg Catcher. Periodically (not sure what causes it), the phone cannot find those things. This means that if I have set a custom ringtone, my phone does not ring. I have missed several calls because of this. At first, I thought it was a Zedge issue, but it happens in DoggCatcher as well. I will go into play a downloaded podcast, and I get an error that the file cannot be found. If I reboot, it fixes itself, but it happens later.
I am running Bionix Nextgen, but I know it's not a ROM issue, because it also happened on other ROMs I have used. I think it's a matter of my phone looking for a file in a certain place instead of where it is housed. Could it be an SD issue? Anyone have this happen to them? Any help is appreciated.
its an sd card issue most likely, try a different SD card. I'd recommend you reformat your SD card, Odin back to stock and then flash a new rom
i had similar issues try an app like sdrescan i tend to be able to find everything after running that n it only takes a matter of a few minutes

+1
I doubt it's an SDcard issue, it sounds more like a problem with media scanner since the files become visible once you reboot (after media scanner re-scans).

That's not going to help. He has already tried different roms, same problem. Android Media Storage Service, which controls Media Scanner is buggy. Lots of threads here about Media Scanner stuck at 0% or taking over 15 minutes to complete.
First thing to do is flush the cache.
Go to application manager -> running applications -> Media Storage and clear data. Reboot phone or run the sdrescan app shreddintyres recommends. This will restart Media Scanner. Anytime your Vibrant "loses" sight of any media you have downloaded you need to re-run Media Scanner either by app, reboot, plugging into PC and enabling/disabling USB storage.
It is also recommended that you put an empty file named .nomedia into any folder in your phone that does not contain media. This tells media scanner to ignore these folders and will make media scanning faster since it has less folders to scan.

[Q] Google music

Have not seen anything about this problem I am having so thought the only way was to ask.
I transferred all my music on to the A500 into the music folder and fired up music (The one with the cover flow). It picked all the music up fine but now I have a problem.
I wanted to start again as a lot of music made it over the I did not really want so via a file manager I deleted all the music files.
When I restarted music i thought it may have noticed that nothing was there and removed all the cover art so i could start over however it still shows it all and if you tap on any of them it just says unable to play which I can understand because there is nothing there.
I could see nothing that allows me to refresh the list or anything like that although this is mentioned on the help (does not show on the actual app).
I went to the main settings app and applications and selected clear data which it did but all the cover art is still showing up.
Anyway I get can get rid of all this.
did you power down then power on your tablet after clearing data in manage applications?
Yup I did but has made no difference.
Ok well managed to sort this out, Was a case of going in a terminating all services relating to it then going in and clearing all data then re powering.
Mods you can delete this thread if you want.
