I have the same issue, Doesnt run smooth at all ...However I get annoyed when the fps drops below 40 ( you can just feel the lack of smoothness)
If you ever think your gpu/phone might have an issue simply install some of the benchmarks and compare with the users on XDA :good:

UI still runs super smooth at 128MHz, so will setting it to this have any major positive effect on battery life? If not playing games I'm guessing u won't really need all that GPU power.

bump
Well, in technical terms it *should* give you better battery life because it's reducing stress on a main hardware component so it doesn't have to work as hard (the harder it works, the more battery it takes). Same thing with the screen; the lower the brightness, the better the battery.

Wouldn't it have to work harder for longer because it can't do anything as fast? It isn't like if you set the GPU clock to 487mhz it runs at 487mhz all the time, so ramping up to 487mhz would allow it to finish whatever it is doing faster wouldn't it?

Then wouldn't it be the same with the CPU? When I answered I was thinking like how a CPU would work. I understand your thinking though.

Well I would like to add that the 540 sgx can power the 720P in the Galaxy Nexus... That dino is significantly weaker than the Adreno 320 even over clocked. I run 128 only and it works fine for games and even HD videos(YouTube). To confirm I tried Most wanted, dead trigger, temple run, riptide, etc and there weren't any issues(also toggled vSync). And if you use benchmarks like Epic cidel or antutu you'll see the frames are still pretty high.
So I'll say that 128 or even 200mhz is sufficient for this GPU and most purposes. However a good I/o scheduler and governor are still recommended.

I think another advantage if it runs what you want at a good frame rate is less heat.
I think that my threads it's a little ironic, I start talking about my problem:
I bought a Nexus 10 few days ago (one week), and when I play some games that use a lot of 3D graphics, the tablet beggins hotter.
With an app I saw that it turns into 40ºC (the most) (playing with an high temperature, like 35ºC in air) but normally turns into 36ºC playing hard, or 35ºC watching movies at 720p, if I use the tablet for Google Chrome, Gmail etc it turns at 33ºC. Is it normal?
My tablet has the stock rom 4.2.2
Thanks for all and sorry for bad english... ^^
it is normal ... dont worry . keep your calm dude !!
if its not getting hot and freezes or restart , its allright .

Okey.. Thanks guy
Yesterday, I was playing a film for 3 hours at 720p and the nexus get 36 °C with no freeze or restart
I'm going to wait for some others answers ^^ and what happens if I decide undervolting the tablet?

The Exynos 5250 tends to run a bit on the hot side-- driving the screen with an A15 chipset does consume a fair bit of power. Undervolting might help, but probably not significantly (it's usually better for battery life than heat, and even then it's not a huge deal).
Play a great quality video on any player = warm but normal
Play any quality video from the internet on the browser itself or on any player = ridiculously warm, I mean REALLY warm
No clue why.
Temperature your giving us is battery temperature, CPU temp will be much higher (just saying in case you were feeling that its much hotter near cam than 40). If you want CPU temp. KTManta kernel provides it. And its like they say, until its not turning your device off its ok, mine nexus is rebooting and I saw 43 battery temp so you have so margin
Thanks guys^^ , and what happens if nexus reboot?
Enviado desde mi Nexus 10 usando Tapatalk 4 Beta
If it happens once in a while (lets say month or so) its nothing. Reboot prevents cpu to "blow into your face" if something went wrong, so its relatively good. If it happens a lot you need to get a replacement (my case).

Nice... So I hope that my tablet won't pass for that.. And where I live it's a very hot place (43°C in the street) so I think that 35 degrees in tablet is normal

Actually, if it happens more than once in normal operating parameters, I'd be concerned. Software onboard your device and the processor itself are supposed to automatically slam the brakes, so to speak and limit performance until excess heat is dissipated. Without this safeguard in place, I'd be worried.

I'm just impressed that your internals were cooler than ambient air temperature, which is fairly impressive (unless you brought it out from inside a house, in which case that makes more sense).

Today I had a problem, I was playing GTA 3 (not dowloaded from Google Play) and suddenly the tablet freezes and started emit a sound..
I think that wasn't cause of overheating, because only was at 37ºC (when the tablet had get 40ºC many times and nothing)
Will be a problem of the app?

Non Google play (cracked) apps can usually have viruses. It'd be best to remove it or download a security app and scan it and all your other apps to see if any of them contain malware

Unlock bootloader and flash a custom recovery such as TWRP. Then you can flash the kernel just like flash a custom rom. I've tried Franco, Trinity KTmanta and many other default kernels of custom roms, and now I'm staying in ktmanta for a while because it include many parameters I can play with, although it can also get really hot. Franco might cause freeze in pa, at least on my tablet it did. Trinity kernel and default kernels of rootbox and pacman seems work fine.

What else do you have running and are you on a factory ROM or is your device customised?
I found switching off stuff like GPS especially helped as well as bluetooth, anything that wasn't required so I could play the games at full speed also take it out of the case if it has one when playing intensive games.

i have the same problem !!
Guys its normal.
The CPU/GPU and many other modules are on the same chip (SOC)
When you play games you use the CPU and GPU on maximum frequency so they heat up, If you want to lower the heat just enable Power Saving Mode and check limit CPU.
Good luck
Does your laptop has a good graphics card and it gets heated up when playing games? Its the same thing with your phone too.

Download Warhammer 40K. It was released today, and it's a really really pretty game. The Edge plays it without any issues, even after maxing both graphics and resolution (in-game after first campaign).

Fun game. The graphics are great and smooth when you crank them up. My S7E gets nice and toasty when playing, lol.
The heat pipe works great though. It doesn't get too hot, and there's no throttling.

Mine gets hot while playing games. That's it. I don't have the temp displayed on screen, just going off of feel. Is there anything else running in the background?
I wouldn't be too concerned about 105°F either way. My Xperia could be used as a heating pad and was still running strong after nearly 2 years of use. Really wish I hadn't dropped it.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Something you an try is turning down the screen brightness a lot. What I would do if I were you would be check out the thread about lowing the resolution to 1080p. The phone will run cooler and be a little snappier since the GPU won't be nearly as taxed. The only issue you will have would be if you use moto display. The camera is a little off too, but you get used to clicking below the video button to record. Also, you are not going to notice the resolution difference
Seems to be better now. I was using Nova Launcher when I first set it up, and I'm using Google Now Launcher and seems to be normal now. Either that or it's settled now.

This topic has been discussed since the phone was released. Its display and GPU. I am rooted running trupure with frankenkirk and 1080p display setting. All is better and haven't had any heating issues like the stock ROM. I believe display setting will screw up moto features..
42 Celcius here using chrome, and sometimes Youtube, complety stock ( not unlocked)

Try a different kernel. Stock seems to keep all cores at max for best user experience. This however gets the phone hot and reduces battery life.

I haven't made the switch to 1080p yet. The room and qhd are working fine for me. The only time my phone gets hot is when playing games for a certain amount of time. Other than that, I haven't had any heating issues.
I just notice I get better battery with 1080p setup. Also helps with phone not getting too hot as well when playing games.

It should work with no problems. Usually it is launchers, apps, and widgets that are specific to manufacturers (i.e. Samsung and LG interface, apps, and widgets) that are the issue. With Motorola keeping this phone almost true to vanilla, there should be very little if any issues changing resolution.

It will break moto display. I don't use any moto app/system that came with the phone. That could also add to better battery. Follow the instruction for 1080p. Just make sure root, SU installed, and terminal emulator. When you set it up, you will see your screen resolution change.
