Hello,
I have nexus 7, and I would like to teach him to tether wifi.
I know that at first I have to root it, and I have no idea how.
And I also know that after rooting, I have to flash something. And I also have no idea how.
I can't find any full manual how to do it. Can anyone help me please?
Some apps will tether without root here's a link to one, but there are others you can try. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi

Hi, I have already tried some of these apps, but none worked for me. I have tried this one too, wifi is working, but when I am trying to connect with my mac, it says no internet connection, and when I am trying to connect with my android phone, it always says: connecting, or obtineing IP…

I still can not find anything to work when rooting my phone i used z4 nothin superoneclick and nothin there
Anyone anything? i will donate if there is somthing that works
You can flash the super clean rom, that has root built right in..
if you don't like that idea, try the super one click found around this joint..
I just rooted this morning using superoneclick. I had some troubles getting it to stay connected to my phone. I ended up having to change the USB port to one of my rear ones directly mounted on the MoBo of my desktop. The front ones seemed to have trouble keeping connected.
DL17 on mine.

I had no problems rooting mine using SuperOneClick also.
I've got DL17.
So the superoneclick located at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
works for the Continuum?
What is DL17?
Is there a tutorial for using superoneclick anywhere? (I am an old fart)
The only reason I am interested in rooting is so I can then tether without the extra $20 a month charge and 2gb data cap. I can use my regular unlimited data plan that I already pay $30 a month for.
Thanks for any help in advance, and yes, I will donate.
Use SuperOneClick, but do it twice. The first may fail, the second will not. For some reason mine worked on the first try

I just successfully rooted my daughter's Continuum, and installed wireless tethering which worked FAMOUSLY thanks to this forum. Two issues:
I had to upload the apk to my website then download and run it to install it. The direction kept saying "mount the SD card". How exactly do I do that? When using USB on Windows 7 all I get is autorun options and the CDFS directory with the drivers on it.
Is there an application for USB tethering? I can charge while tethering if need be.
So I got the Froyo update and it killed my ability to tether and root.
Seriously, Im even having trouble with WIRED tethering. Its not working and wont root.
Please point me in the direction of some noob friendly step by step instructions for installing a custom rom that is tethering friendly, along with any info for simply getting wired or wireless tethering to work after the Froyo update?
You shouldn't have installed the update.

Yeah I know. Is there nothing I can do now?
They say they can bring you back to 2.1 if you take it to the shop. Does the update do anything that prevents installing ROMs? When they bring you back to 2.1, will that fix whatever they did or is it in that version now too?
Why can't you root?
Because I accepted the update and the update killed root and tethering for me? I guess there was a way to upgrade without accepting that update.
z4root wont work, and also it says that the OS no longer has the drivers to support the free wireless tethering apps.
......Did you read the OP?
So how am I supposed to root if I cant even use clockwork to install new roms without root access? Am I totally ****ed? Should I just return this phone and get one from Verizon?
Yes I read the OP but the 2.2.1 update doesn't prevent rooting again. If it did, I wouldn't be rooted right now.
I'm not sure what you did or didn't do, but the one click method works.
hes never been one clicked. he only used z4root.

z4root is hokey. you need to use the oneclick root. its really simple.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
use this thred. it is for real root, not z4. also, the drivers are installed on your computer, not your phone.

Thank you for something helpful finally.
That makes sense. I tried installing it on my phone. Thank you for noticing that.
You know, if you wrote these instructions for noobs it would really help....For example, when we are dealing with not 1 but 2 devices, it might be helpful to describe which device is doing what. One minute I am doing something with the phone and the next its just "install this"....Dumb it down a bit, like you are talking to people who dont know anything about anything.
Anyway, thanks. Im going to try this now.

Don't feel too bad. I had to read that stuff several times before even deciding whether I should try it.
It keeps saying phone is not connected, even though it says USB-storage is enabled and I can access the files on my phone.
Don't click on mass storage.....and turn on usb debugging

The NON-One click solution seems doable but complicated, and I dont really know what I am doing.
Im thinking about paying somebody to root the phone properly. One person advertised in the SF Bay Area that I know of.

Cool.
Thanks for the support. Im going to try this at least for another day or so before giving up.
OK. Now it says rage against the cage is missing.
The file is clearly there, but VLC media player wants to open it instead of anything useful.
do you use any sort of anti virus? it will remove things from the ragagainstthecage exploit. disable you antivirus for a few minutes and redownload the the rootpackage. im not saying thats what the problem is, im just saying antivirus clashes with the root method.
A little effort goes a long way. Getting root is easy for the epic. Install the samsung drivers, turn on usb debuging on phone, extract the oneclick folder and run the "run.bat" file and let it do its thing.

I had that problem also and it turned out that I was trying to run it from a networked drive. I had to unzip the file to my computer desktop then run the program from there before it worked properly.
If you check out this thread there is a how to video i made to root and flash a rom. Check it out, I think it will help you out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009997
make sure correct samsung drivers are installed on your computer (32 or 64)
download and extract once click root to your computer
Enable usb debugging on your phone (settings - applications - development - usb debugging)
Plug phone into computer
Run run.bat, wait, and enjoy.

No, you can't root yet.
If you only want the phone for WIFI use, check out this thread:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25016-modany-phone-any-rom-wi-fi-only-mode-disable-cell-radio/
There's also a link within that will bring you back here if you still want to make calls over wifi with the phone.

PERFECT! exactly what im wanting! but alas... requires root
just select airplane mode, then turn on wifi, 3g will still be off
or maybe another turn data off option, other than airplane mode, can't remember
really only options, until a root method is found

You need to re-install the root application (Superuser or SuperSU). Updating your tablet to ICS has removed root rights from the su binary. Re-installing will fix that.
You only need your sim tool and the phone.
1) open the sim tray but don't take out the sim card.
2) push the sim tray back in the phone.
3) wait 4-5 seconds and then activate hotspot in the settings->more->tethering
If these directions don't help you can see my video on youtube.
Don't ask how I found this but it works for Verizon and AT&T. I have not tested this on any other carriers.
This works by turning on the hotspot while the phone is provisioning. If you attempt to do this too soon or too late you will trigger the subscription check.
You will need to perform this everytime you want tethering if you turn tethering off or reboot the phone.
I can confirm this works on 5X connected to Sprint. SIM tool has now been added to my keychain.
Can you not just add the provisioning line to the build.prop to negate the need to do this?
It's worked since as long as I can remember.

You should be able to use ADB through TWRP recovery once you unlock the bootloader and flash recovery. Pull the build.prop, edit it, then push it back.
Edit: don't mind me, didn't realize this was if you don't want to unlock anything

no it does not.
To everyone else saying build.prop editing. It says in the title WITHOUT unlocking and rooting.
For T-Mobile, I'm able to do it while completely stock (non-rooted) but unlocked, simply by issuing the following command:
Code:
adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0
And also using a user agent spoof extension in Chrome to report that I'm running as googlebot.
Works like a charm.

I read somewhere that the latest update patched this. Not official, but stumbled across someone else saying it no longer worked on 6.0.1. Might have been from another post here on xda somewhere.
Hi guys, I have a question,
I have been able to use my data connection without any problem on my firefox OS device. Since I use my nexus 5X, the is not possible (a message it telling me to active this feature on att.com event though i am using H2o Carrier (which uses att network) )
So here is my question, how come the nexus 5x which is suppose to be unlock cannot do internet tethering ? Why did it work with FirefoxOS but not Android ? How do they block that ?
Cheers
O_S
Yeah 6.0.1 blocked it you can do it still but when you connect the device to it you can't get internet connection.. Sucks..
Hopefully there will be a work around, or Foxfi will get updated to work
Thank you OP for the tray trick !!! - works great (wait about 3 sec) on Moto X (2013) running 5.1 on Cricket (was AT&T b4)
Might need to root and make it permanent as it's not convenient to take case off and carry a pin around each time, but better than nothing...
Update: got a Nexus 5x with 6.0.1 and the trick works as well, though more often than not hotspot is on BUT no data/LTE symbol. But I got it to work at times. more finicky.

how can you write to necessary file without root access ? (from command shell I supposed)
When you mention chrome extension, how does that come into play (browsing on your computer, but how does it get wifi tethering access anyway ?)
Please explain (got Moto X 2013 running 5.1 non rooted originally AT&T but unlocked on Cricket now).
Hey everyone! So, I'm new to the whole Nexus and rooting thing but have used Android for a while (mostly HTC and Samsung stock devices). I came to Nexus because I thought I'd give it a shot and I'm super pleased with how it works, how fast it is, etc compared to non-Nexus devices. I went and downloaded the Android SDK tools, copy and pasted all the instructions, and got all ready to make this build.prop edit until I realised that the cable is a USB-C and it doesn't plug into my computer. The entire week I had this device I just assumed the charger was USB-A on the brick side and USB-C on the phone side, but alas, it's not. So, silly question, what cables are you all using to do this stuff? Is there an adapter on Amazon you recommend over another because I see a lot!
Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
Interesting the 5X is different from the OG Nexus 5 in this feature. I'm on the $30/mo t-mobile plan, and I just swipe down from the quick settings menu to turn on the hot spot. My Nexus 5 is not rooted.
