No, you can't root yet.
If you only want the phone for WIFI use, check out this thread:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25016-modany-phone-any-rom-wi-fi-only-mode-disable-cell-radio/
There's also a link within that will bring you back here if you still want to make calls over wifi with the phone.

PERFECT! exactly what im wanting! but alas... requires root
just select airplane mode, then turn on wifi, 3g will still be off
or maybe another turn data off option, other than airplane mode, can't remember
really only options, until a root method is found

No NAND unlock yet, but now we don't need to fiddle with SD cards and curse at the phone/wall/ceiling for hours while trying to get root on the stubborn Incredibles. Thank you so much Unrevoked!
unrevoked 3
How do I use unrevoked 3? Does it let you tether? I need step by step instructions. It's not like the first one that you do thru the phone so I'm clueless. Help someone.
its easy just download it and extract... find the html file and intall the drivers from it then run the EXE and it does everything
I spent a lot of time on this rooting thing and eventually gave up. And then I saw the recent message regarding the release of Unrevoked v3.0. I installed it and it worked perfectly! I am grateful to finally have root! I would like to thank you guys so much for your time and effort !
How???
how do you find and install the html file??
Edit: never mind i got it

yojoe600,
your explanation was too short. where is the html? can you break it down for me like i'm 6...lol. the last root was for dummies this seems complicated. do i use my computer with my evo hooked to it to do this root?

Thread moved to General.
Just read their tweet gobto their website and download their program(if u go read their tweet it will direct u to their website and download the easy root for your OS) make sure that there are no programs interfering with your usb port.) Good luck its really easy.

I was in the middle of unrevoked 3 and it said on on my computer waiting for hboot. I also couldn't find the hboot option on my phone recovery menus. What should I do ?

I just used this for my Droid Incredible on Mac OS... worked very very easily, with no hassle whatsoever. Thumbs up to unrevoked.
4G Speeds in EVO Still Available Under Unrevoked3?
Does the root that's provided through Unrevoked3 impact the 4G connectivity on the Evo? I know that was an issue with other root methods.
Also, is there a way to safely revert back to a 'stock' build (i.e., non-root) in case there are unforeseen issues with Unrevoked3? Thanks, folks!
Wifi Tether
I just used the Unrevoked3 root/reflash it worked great! 30 seconds had the phone done!..I did a nandroid backup and downloaded Titanium Backup, Titanium works great also! now, I download Wireless Tether from the market, installed and ran the app, it asked for su permission and was granted, the app was running, I turned wifi "on" on the laptop and it found AndroidTether ssid, i connected, all I get is a full signal with an yellow exclamation, no internet access! what am I doing wrong? I am using windows 7 Ultimate version.
You need a different kernel to run the app "wifi tether". You can get a custom kernel by downloading a rom like Sky Raider.
Got it working..., thank you!

Can't get Unrevoked 3 to work
I get beyond installing the driver and I get to a recovery screen but....an Adobe Flash window pops up on the computer indicating the script is running slow do I want to stop and I say no. About this time, Unrevoked shoots a message that it has stopped communicating with the phone and I should start over.
Although this is a great method, it would be great if someone would list the steps that this process is using so that maybe from where I lost communications, I can just finish. Or tell me what to do to get the Flash error message to stop coming up.
Thanks for any help!
Hell8,
I have an unrooted i317 with latest firmware from at&t. I'm trying to configure tasker to do the following. .can someone help me with this please? It looks like the latest Android makes it difficult to turn on/off gps using tasker. ..
1) if connected to bluetooth, turn on gps & location. Turn off on disconnect.
2) if Google maps of navigation is started, turn on gps. Turn off on close.
3) if battery < 45%, turn on power saving. Turn off when phone is on charger.

Sorry about that. Thanks for moving the thread to its right destination.
If someone can help me, please let me know on this thread.. GPS is draining my battery pretty bad, and the only times I want it ON is when I am in the car (i.e. connected to bluetooth), or when I am using Maps/Navigation application.. At all other times, I want bluetooth off.
Tasker tells me that I cannot control bluetooth without root, but my work email uses MaaS360 which does not allow sync'ing email on rooted devices..

I know. That's why the nandroid before hand. I think you'd be able to reset up your exchange account afterwards and it wouldn't know you had root. I was looking at it for the same reason you are. But it turned out, despite what our it department was telling me I could be rooted so I didn't have to use it. I was also able to set up my own exchange account so I didn't have to go back to them with my tail between my legs if i screwed it up.

Nope. I'm confused though...why is it you can't root? Exchange settings? You should be able to set up the same exchange account on a rooted phone...besides, the MDF root method doesn't even require wiping the phone.

I can't root because of two reasons:
1) My company uses a Mobile Device Management tool called MaaS360 to enforce some policies. One of the policies that is enforced is that the phone is non-rooted (non-jailbroken for iPhone). Few of my colleagues have tried using their rooted phone and were blocked access.. so I know for sure that this is enforced. (http://www.maas360.com/maasters/blo...r-jailbroken-devices-raise-security-concerns/ for more details)
2) I have the latest MDL firmware. While it is possible to root this with some of the recently found exploits, there is still no custom recovery flash possible - so I cannot use Nandroid.. I would hate to try rooting a $600 device and converting it into a brick without the insurance from customer recovert
But even if a solution to #2 is found, I cannot root my phone due to #1.

If I get a GS4 device with MDL firmware, root+recovery it, and install tasker & secure settings on it - then remove root permissions on the phone; will my GPS on/off task continue to function properly? The only things I want to use Tasker for currently is to control my GPS, and do some wake-on-lan calls at home (I verified that WoL works without root).
Hello,
I left the land of iOS a while back because I was sick of the cat-and-mouse game around jailbreaking. I assured that I could root my Nexus 4 and install whatever I want. The problem is that everything I keep finding about rooting my phone is like *massive* overkill.
I'm used to iOS where jailbreaking simply unlocks the phone so I can do whatever I want. I basically want to achieve that same effect on my phone. It would be ideal if I could even still somehow get system updates from Google after rooting but that might be asking too much.
I've had my phone for some time now and there are only two reasons I want to root it:
1) I want to enable LTE
2) I want to be able to install AdBlock fully
I don't want to install a customized ROM. Everything about my phone is fine. I just want to do the two above things. In fact, I almost don't even care that much about AdBlock. Enabling LTE that is most important to me.
Is it necessary for me to locate a new ROM to do this? If so, where can I find a ROM identical to the one currently installed (everything is up to date) but simply 'unlocked' so I can install the LTE enabler? Is there another way to enable LTE without rooting?
Sorry if this question has been answered, I've searched around, but I seem to be finding lots of not very useful answers.

I read you post and I think you are asking for something (i.e., LTE) but you don't want to get your hands dirty. So here is my suggestion for you, sell your nexus 4 on swappa and then buy the Nexus 5 which has LTE by default. The price of Nexus 5 has come down very much that you can recoup some by selling the Nexus 4.
I never said I'm unwilling to get my hands dirty. I am just trying to find the simplest, cleanest way to do this. Once I identify that, I'll execute.

Two main steps really:
1. Root your phone (involves unlocking your bootloader):
a. This will destroy all data on your phone, so back up what you need to
b. This is a great guide to getting it done: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Blog/Google-Nexus-4-Unlock-and-Root-Guide/ba-p/6983918"
It uses the graphical toolkit which if you dont want to get your hands dirty makes it much easier than messing around with the command line
c. In summary the process is Download toolkit on PC -> Enable usb debugging on phone -> Install Drivers on PC (from toolkit) -> Unlock Bootloader -> Install Root and Flash Custom Recovery
2. Flash a custom Modem. This enables the LTE/4G:
a. This basically overwrites the radio software with one which has 4G Unlocked
b. bpear96 has written an App that you can get from the Play Store which makes it easier for you to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/themes-apps/app-nexus-4-modem-flasher-lte-enabler-t2607221)
c. This is a good guide to do so (http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-enable-lte-google-nexus-4-e960-1447403), follow the bit that says ‘How to enable LTE on Nexus 4’. You have to choose a LTE Hybrid Modem, flash this (will reboot) and then go back into the app and Say Enable LTE.
At this point your phone should be able to pick up the LTE Signals and should show 4G.
Since you're rooted, you can simply download the AdAway apk and install it.
Use the Wugsfresh toolkit to get root, then the LTE Flasher to get LTE.
The hardest part will be getting the right Windows drivers to install, but that's Microsoft's fault not Google

You only need your sim tool and the phone.
1) open the sim tray but don't take out the sim card.
2) push the sim tray back in the phone.
3) wait 4-5 seconds and then activate hotspot in the settings->more->tethering
If these directions don't help you can see my video on youtube.
Don't ask how I found this but it works for Verizon and AT&T. I have not tested this on any other carriers.
This works by turning on the hotspot while the phone is provisioning. If you attempt to do this too soon or too late you will trigger the subscription check.
You will need to perform this everytime you want tethering if you turn tethering off or reboot the phone.
I can confirm this works on 5X connected to Sprint. SIM tool has now been added to my keychain.
Can you not just add the provisioning line to the build.prop to negate the need to do this?
It's worked since as long as I can remember.

You should be able to use ADB through TWRP recovery once you unlock the bootloader and flash recovery. Pull the build.prop, edit it, then push it back.
Edit: don't mind me, didn't realize this was if you don't want to unlock anything

no it does not.
To everyone else saying build.prop editing. It says in the title WITHOUT unlocking and rooting.
For T-Mobile, I'm able to do it while completely stock (non-rooted) but unlocked, simply by issuing the following command:
Code:
adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0
And also using a user agent spoof extension in Chrome to report that I'm running as googlebot.
Works like a charm.

Hi guys, I have a question,
I have been able to use my data connection without any problem on my firefox OS device. Since I use my nexus 5X, the is not possible (a message it telling me to active this feature on att.com event though i am using H2o Carrier (which uses att network) )
So here is my question, how come the nexus 5x which is suppose to be unlock cannot do internet tethering ? Why did it work with FirefoxOS but not Android ? How do they block that ?
Cheers
O_S
Yeah 6.0.1 blocked it you can do it still but when you connect the device to it you can't get internet connection.. Sucks..
Hopefully there will be a work around, or Foxfi will get updated to work
Thank you OP for the tray trick !!! - works great (wait about 3 sec) on Moto X (2013) running 5.1 on Cricket (was AT&T b4)
Might need to root and make it permanent as it's not convenient to take case off and carry a pin around each time, but better than nothing...
Update: got a Nexus 5x with 6.0.1 and the trick works as well, though more often than not hotspot is on BUT no data/LTE symbol. But I got it to work at times. more finicky.

how can you write to necessary file without root access ? (from command shell I supposed)
When you mention chrome extension, how does that come into play (browsing on your computer, but how does it get wifi tethering access anyway ?)
Please explain (got Moto X 2013 running 5.1 non rooted originally AT&T but unlocked on Cricket now).
Hey everyone! So, I'm new to the whole Nexus and rooting thing but have used Android for a while (mostly HTC and Samsung stock devices). I came to Nexus because I thought I'd give it a shot and I'm super pleased with how it works, how fast it is, etc compared to non-Nexus devices. I went and downloaded the Android SDK tools, copy and pasted all the instructions, and got all ready to make this build.prop edit until I realised that the cable is a USB-C and it doesn't plug into my computer. The entire week I had this device I just assumed the charger was USB-A on the brick side and USB-C on the phone side, but alas, it's not. So, silly question, what cables are you all using to do this stuff? Is there an adapter on Amazon you recommend over another because I see a lot!
Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
Interesting the 5X is different from the OG Nexus 5 in this feature. I'm on the $30/mo t-mobile plan, and I just swipe down from the quick settings menu to turn on the hot spot. My Nexus 5 is not rooted.

root your go prime
Go to youtube and type in how to root android with kingroot. Very easy, no computr nreded and it works great. Comes with purify which allows you to get rid of all that nasty bloatware. And a little trick for that phone, if you go into settings then to about phone then find where is says build number and click it 7 times youll activate developer mode. So if you go back to settings youll have a new setting called developer options, in their you can turn on and off usb debugging and even factory unlock your phone for any gsm. Oh yeah one more thing kingroot is completly reversable so it wont void phone warranty.
root your go prime
If you go to google search and search kingroot, one of the links that come up says (all versions) thats yhe one you want. Go to that link and find the download that says latest next to or under the download prompt and download that one. Once its downloaded go to your apps and open it and, then its as simple as clicking the root option. You might have to go in to your accesibility settings and turn on the option that allows you to download app from other places than the play store. I have the same phone and it works great on mine, ive checked root access using a root check app and its legit and its worked on every android phone ive tried it on. So enjoy. And keep me in mind after you root your phone cause im new at this and would like to download a custom rom for nouget 7.0 which i know they have out their for our phone im just not that tech savy so if you figure it out let me know, will greatly appreciate it.
