[Q] regarding: Loki + TWRP + Motochopper CASUAL

Hey folks.
I attempted to ask this in the most relevant thread, but as a new user I can not.
My question pertains to the CASUAL root tool for the S4.
Developed by AdamOutler.
Described in the thread "[ROOT[RECOVERY] Loki + TWRP + Motochopper CASUAL-R527b release"
The tool looks pretty amazing.
But I do have some questions.
Please forgive me in advance I am an UBER NEWBIE.
Many of the terms thrown around here are completely foreign to me.
(Yes, I've searched for that knowledge - but perhaps you are underestimating my noobness. )
(Yes, I have read the "[HOW-TO] The All-In-One Root/Backup/Flash Guide - [I337 & I337M]" thread as well... it helped but... yeah still a noob.)
FYI: The only reason I want to root my S4 (AT&T) is so I can remove the crappy bloatware, and also configure the anti-theft/find-phone features of the avast! app.
Ok so on to the questions...
1) Once this is done what's to stop some update from my carrier un-doing it all?
2) If that were to happen how much pain would I be in for?
3) If the only way to protect one's self from this is to somehow disable OS/firmware updates... is the only way to get future OS updates through a ROM?
4) This TWRP thing seems to be a backup/recovery tool?
I gather that it also enable ROMs flashing, etc?
I've read others like "Titanium Backup" because it can freeze/remove the bloatware.
Are they both kinda the same thing?
Will the two conflict?
5) This "Nandroid" is another backup tool?
Am I correct in my understanding that the TWRP leverages nandroid - or are they comepeting solutions.
6) Is Nandroid a system function or some other tool that needs installed?

If you root you will not be able to get updates any longer.

Its not going to happen because you are rooted.

The only way you will get updates is ODIN back to stock. Again, no worries.

TWRP - is a recovery, so you can perform nandroid backups, and to flash roms, and to restore backups. Nothing more, nothing less.
Titanium Backup is a app you use within the rom, to backup and restore apps with, you can read more on this going to the market, it will explain this app's features and what it does.
They are not the same, 2 different programs, that do 2 different things.
Question 5 & 6 answered in #4 answer.

So does the Root tool (in this case the CASUL script by Adam) do something to shut down carrier updates or I need to do something extra?
Also if one were to ODIN back to stock... and get an update... and then re-root...
I assume you could get an old backup from an external storage area and try to get all your "stuff" back?

Once you root,, it changes the rom status to custom, so the update see's that and does NOTHING. if you odin back to stock, un-root, you can force updates, but be careful with updates, carriers are patching things so we can not do what we do, and that is to run custom roms on phones THAT WE OWN!
And btw, if this person xBeerdroiDx gives me a thanks, he is saying I did ok... If you seem to have anymore questions, his guide is one of the best....

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I figured Axman may know.
In the past on my S2, I would flash a lot of roms. maybe after every 5 or 10 I would odin back to stock, boot it up, re-root, re-twrp, then flash another rom. just to get a very clean slate in a sense.
If I were to do this with the S4, you dont think the ATT update would get pushed in the 30 mins to an hour that the phone is in its stock state, do you? I dont want to get mf3'd.

hehe it could, but highly unlikely, and if you feel that it may happen, do what I do, remove the sim until you get rooted, and then put the sim back in and complete the setup. Your not going to get calls in that time period anyways.

I'm just throwing my limited experience out. I have never went back to stock via Odin simply to get a "clean slate." Completing a full wipe including a system format in recovery will be sufficient for a clean OS. I would reserve Odin flashing as a last resort for when problems aren't being remedied by a full wipe and format via recovery.

TWRP - is a recovery, so you can perform nandroid backups, and to flash roms, and to restore backups. Nothing more, nothing less.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its my understanding if you're rooted and still stock the MDL will still update to MF3 unless you either completely flash a custom ROM or rename the OTA files that At&t have on our devices.

somewhat, but as soon as you root, your phone status is custom correct? therefor how can it update? Yes, it is better to do a custom rom, but you can still stay on MDL and never get updates, freezing the samsung update will work, but I gave the easiest way in his situation.

Hi...I'm another noob with a question about this. I also just used CASUAL to root my phone yesterday. I am definitely rooted but my Device Status actually still shows Official. Following the info in another thread, I used ES File Explorer's Root Manager to rename the wssyncmldm.apk.

The thread was actually written for a previous update, but renaming the apk should still be relevant.
Maybe this was overkill, but...

I was just rooted and it showed custom status after, so no updates, you must check the status. just flashing a kernel will change the status, if you are going to root and install a recovery, some things are to go without saying.
Btw, I have learned, that nothing with information is an overkill, if you haven't notice xda is a bunch of peoples ideas and such, and many do not work for others, it is a hit miss.

Yeah...maybe I am referring to the wrong thing, but I was surprised that Settings > More > About Device > Status > Device Status still said "Official" on mine. I know CASUAL succeeded. TWRP is installed, SuperUser is installed. And I was able to use ES File Explorer's Root Manager to change system to R/W and rename the apk. So even though I'm very much an android novice, I'm pretty certain I'm rooted. I don't necessarily plan to flash a rom yet...but since I was still on MDL I wanted to retain the current ability to do so!

I did not mean to confuse anyone. Yes you did the right thing by renaming the the file. if your device says official then this step is needed. mine said custom. umm i stand corrected fellows..another step is needed. thanks for the oversight. i am only human..im not a animal.

if you are paranoid then there are 3 files you can freeze. i cant remember which ones, but one is att update something something, thats all i can remember.

Encryption/Exchange after root/ss/rom

Hi all,
I have a VWZ note 3, and installed the latest update from Verizon.
I also have this phone currently activated companies exchange server VIA active sync, and my phone is also currently encrypted. I have a couple of questions:
If I factory reset my phone to remove any current encryption, can I then root the phone, safe strap, and them add on beans rom? Once done, connect it back to exchange, encrypt and go on my merry way? Or can I only root?
I appreciate the answers.

Well, there's the big bold red warning at the top of @Hashcode 's Safestrap thread about using SS with an encrypted device:
[RECOVERY LOCKED/MI9,MJ7] Safestrap Recovery v3.71 [2013-12-27 BETA]
I suppose the sequence you are suggesting is maybe a little different - or that you have seen that thread, and are looking for further details.
Perhaps you could put your inquiry in that thread - and maybe also ask if the person that discovered that problem was able to recover (using Odin?)... in case you want to put your device at risk by trying.

[Q] Encryption enabled & safestrap?

Noob Question of the day
I am relatively new to smartphones 6months ago i had gotten my first Galaxy SIII(which i rooted and installed a custom rom in thanks to a very simple guide)
Now thanks to geohot i have been able to root my S5 i have been wanting to install safestrap for about a month or so but am terrified by the warning posted hashcode saying that if you have encryption enabled on your device you will get stuck in a boot loop. this worries me because i have tinkered with so many settings and i am not sure how i would be able to tell if i had encryption enabled nor have i been able to find a post addressing this.
What i need to know is how can i know if encryption is enabled or not?
(If this was an inappropriate place to post this question i apologize ahead of time and if/when corrected it will not happen again)

Just go to settings, security and check both encrypt device and encrypt external SD card. If neither of those are checked then you have no encryption

Lol, I'm not entirely sure, but... there may be some other encryption method possible... maybe through a 3rd party app? More than likely what I told you is all there is to it if you're a normal user. And I totally understand where you are coming from, if you have a pc also, just make sure you download odin3, the stock firmware and the pit file... these are used if you mess something up. There's also a thread here about returning to stock, I would read up on it too if you're planning on getting into safestrap and root more.

Urgent help needed. Locked out of phone.

I was poking security options within my phone, and I accidentally locked it with a pattern that I cannot recall.
I tried looking for troubleshooting guides, but unfortunately Marshmallow no longer has a "forgot code?" option. Also, I tried Android Device Manager, but it tells me since my phone already has a lockscreen, I no longer need to add a password (which I intended to do, in order to know said password)
I would greatly appreciate any help, since I really don't want to factory reset, since I got lots of pics I don't want to lose.

nope, this does not help. Just now i tried this on my device..if the device is locked adb doesn't recognize the device. this method does not work on marshmallow.
i don't know about lollipop. maybe it works.

Unfortunately, my phone is stock and non rooted, but luckily I could guess the pattern.
I still would like to know for future reference, since Android Device Manager did a great job at getting my phone's location and making it ring... just not unlocking it!!

you don't need to be rooted to access recovery and install files.
for future reference see the 2nd link i posted. I haven't tried that yet, i'l report when i try.

He wouldn't have been able to use it because you need a custom recovery to flash that file.

Well... I guess you know the system works? Probably not great for there to be an easy or sure-fire way to unlock a phone if you don't know the security details.

If it's just data you need, recovery mode should allow you to copy it off the device via USB (if you didnt encrypt the device). Getting into a phone you really locked yourself out of is probably not possible.

i want to know how to copy data from the device through recovery. do you know the process or where to find a guide?

For preventative measures, Tasker is your friend. Have a "Plan B" microSD with a special .txt file on it, and have Tasker detect SD inserted and scan that file. If the file matches, then Tasker should wipe /data/system/gesture.key and password.key, and sqlite3 into settings.db and "update system set value=0 where name='lock_pattern_autolock' " to unlock your device.
In the case of an aftermath, it is now (as of today) possible to recover files/photos from the lockscreen without root, ADB, or custom recovery. Just an internet connection, linked Google account, and access to the notification drawer. I just published my first app, Locked-out Phone Backup, that is similar to the old Screen Lock Bypass Pro for Gingerbread, but instead recovers files instead of disabling the screen lock, so no root is required!

Did Factory Reset in Recovery Mode now wont let me in unless i have previous credenti

A friend bought a this phone second hand and asked me to reset it to factory settings for them.
Naturally I did what i always do and went into recovery mode and dit it there.
Now i have rebooted it is asking for the previous owners Gmail credentials before allowing me any further.
Is there a guide to resetting the phone to ACTUAL factory settings or are we screwed?

Maybe screwed. There is a video in Youtube that shows how to bypass it but maybe it's already fixed by now. Maybe contacting Samsung/seller would help with that Do you have any documents that phone belongs to ur friend?

no documents on phone - otherwise i wouldnt have wiped it in the first place...remember i did a wipe and data reset through recovery - this wipes the data anyway.

surely we are not at a stage now in where simply not knowing a username and password means you cannot use a £600 device???
this is truly security gone mad.
the thing is, this is all set up so that if your phone is stolen someone cannot set it up for themselves and use it. But in truth, if your phone is stolen and the criminal wipes the data, what the hell difference does it make to you if they can use it or not?

I would think a new stock rom flash could help ?
Security has increased but this has to some degree to do with Knox and its approval for restricted information

i havent done this yet because i have read on other forums that people have tried this and it didnt work - it takes an age to download the original rom from sammobile as well

someone on another forum suggested to install TWRP and choosing the "format data" option - which wipes the security section...need to confirm this works though before i do it otherwise i will invalidate the warranty for no reason.

You can do an emergency rapir from Kies which wipes everything on the phone, if you install TWRP you brake knox.
I know Knox is a love and hate affair but still

Personally, on all my phones, i install twrp straight away, root them and off i go....but this is not my phone..so want to try everything but tripping knox first...

This is my first phone which i have not wiped before removing the plastic wrapping, reading up on the security of the device it is high, there are some ways which shows up as workaround for this security option but those are on old devices.

The "Firmware upgrade and initialisation" In Kies should restore your device bypassing that login screen from what I read.

Kies is old. Smart Switch is the new deal. Try emergency recovery with it This is more of an Android thing, so maybe TWRP should wipe everything. Also if you don't have any documents you dont have a valid warranty... just flash TWRT then root and live happy ever after I wish it would be possible to have root and OTA...

Beautiful protection, don't you think? It's called FRP (Factory Reset Protection)!
Your friend must contact the person where he bought it from, and ask for the credentials!
When he/she doesn't know the previous owner anymore -> good luck!

ok - regarding Smart Switch and TWRP.
the documents we were refering to previously are not documents relating to the purchase of the phone, but the data on the phone.
we have all the documents regarding the purchase so DO have a valid warranty.

seems a bit pointless to me. if your phone has been stolen it has been stolen. whether the person who stole it can use it or not is irrelevant isnt it? Doesnt exactly help you get it back!

So go to a repair shop of Samsung and they will fix it for you... Just say I forgot the account... END of story.

Ok - i know that - but I would like to try other routes first as i am sure it wont be that quick doing it like that.
Also - if they can sort it then why isnt there a tool so we can sort it? Logic states if they can do it then surely we can...LOL

If your friends phone is legit: go with the papers to a Samsung Service Point, explaining the situation -> voila! ?

You have to remove your google account from your phone before selling it. The seller should have done this beforehand. Happened to me as well, when i sold my LG G4. Didn't remove my google account, just did a factory reset, and sold the phone. Few days later i got an e-mail from the buyer with the same symptoms. I solved it by signing in with my account (changed the password afterward of course) and manually removed the account again. A factory reset later the phone was free again.
This is the same for all android phones. It was first introduced with LP i guess. So keep this in mind if you are selling an android phone in the future.

If anyone could unlock the phone, then the security inherent in FRP would be invalid. I used to work for Apple, and they had a tool that could unlock a phone if the customer provided proof of ownership, but there is no legitimate way to perform this function without going through Apple. I imagine Samsung has a similar tool. If they can unlock it in a similar manner, it should take about 15 minutes out of your day. Good luck.

I will try and get the email and password first - if that fails then off to a Samsung Store it is.
