Recommended ROMs? - Vibrant General

I'm trying to buy a cheap smartphone for my girlfriend. Just bought a used Vibrant from eBay only to find it had an IMEI blacklisted by T-Mobile. Already had put CM 10.1 on it and she loved it so I'm pissed. Any recommendations for the fastest Android 4.x ROM with the best battery life for the Vibrant?
Any tips for buying a decent used smartphone for under $100? Vibrant seems like one of the best and I'm partial to Samsung.

Try CyanogenMod 10.1.3. It stable and well works.

For buying off CL, you have to ask the seller to meet at a T-Mobile store. That will weed out most crooks. Once there, you have to get the seller to pull up his account with a clerk and confirm there is no money owed on the phone.
Short of that explicit proof that the phone is free and clear, you're at high risk of blacklisting.

Historically I think I have been happiest with Bionix-V Fishmanmod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441976 This is based on Bionix 1.3.1, which in turn is an optimized take on Android 2.2. It's not the newest thing, but is very stable and after the usual tweaks my battery charges last between 1.5-2days with moderate use.
More recently, I have jumped to trying make a nightly build of Cyanogenmod 10.2 (based on Android 4.3.1) work as my daily driver, but am personally having some stubborn battery drain issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449951
Hope that helps!

My backup Vibrant is running CM10.2. Very stable but agree that battery life is not the best.

All the Roms here are good, your question is only one you can answer based on your use and needs.

What better than samsung vibrant?

Hey.
I am thinking of getting android phone, and samsung vibrant is on my list, but I want to know what is better than vibrant at the moment?
Any other andriod phones better than vibrant at the moment that has good features?
I cannot afford Nexus S at the moment as its very expensive without any contract.
Thanks.
You may find other phones that people claim is faster, such as g2 or mytouch 4g or something...but I have yet to see another android phone with the amazing gpu performance of the vibrant..plus, with a few tweaks, this phone is faster than lightning...
But to be fair, Samsung support for the phone isn't all the best. Don't expect timely updates and such. However, our dev community here is awesome and with it, you probably wont miss support from Samsung...

Vibrant and Nexus S are bascily the same, a bit different.
umm... i really can't think of any other phone. Vibrant has filled my needs, but if you plan NOT to put a custom rom on it, or Root it... then... dont get the vibrant, samsung has quit on us, and the devs are the only reason this section is alive.
I dont know how to root or what roms are, etc, but I was waiting for 2.2 I heard it had good features.
So but now that 2.2 is not coming out are there any roms that can fill that gap?

YES.
If your looking for a 2.2, there are some awesome ROMS.
Nero, Ginger Clone, and Axura are the most popular currently.
They DO have a FEW bugs, but they're pretty small ones.
there has been a LEAKED froyo(2.2) rom, if you want a stock one, there is one.
I think you'd love a Vibrant. Before you get irritated, when you buy it, open it right there, and in front of the guy who sold it to you check if the GPS works, some new ones still don't work, and if it doesn't ask for another, and another if you have to, but be sure to make the GPS work wether you use GPS or not, you'll get annoyed later.
Also, if you don't know how to root or flash custom ROMs, there are PLENTY of EASY STEP-by-STEP tutorials to do it.
Just get the nexus S if you don't want to root. Bad side of it is it doesn't have a external storage.

Yup no ext SD was a definite deal breaker for me. Other then that it's a very nice phone.
The mt4g is a great phone for the casual person. But i wouldnt trade my vibrant for it, Im gonna wait for the fabled galaxy s2.
Fear the beard...
I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting a Nexus S today. I love my Vibrant and I'm keeping it as I've had loads of fun with it because of all the community support. Macnut R14 was and is still my rom of choice with the phone and it's very smooth and not that buggy at all - and my GPS works.
Having said that, the reason I got the NS is due to direct Google support. Considering Gingerbread is out now and Samsung has yet to deliver Froyo to 3 of the 4 GS models stateside, I finally made the decision to drive something I know is going to get timely updates. If you're not going to root get the Nexus the trade offs make it about even. If you are going to root then the Vibrant could a strong choice considering what it has over the NS. I know I'll still be here flashing roms for my Vibrant even though I have a different phone to play on now.
If I didn't mind being on Sprint, I'd say the Sprint HTC EVO is better in some respects than the Vibrant. No other phones come to mind. I also still consider the Vibrant to be the best Android powered phone on T-Mobile ATM. FYI, I don't like phones with built-in physical keyboards so I tend to immediately rule those out. The lack of both the SD card slot and gorilla glass on the screen are deal killers for me on the Nexus S when comparing it to the Vibrant. The Nexus S offers nothing I want which I don't already have (EXT4 file system) or won't get in the future (Gingerbread). Timely updates aren't worth it to me.

For the price of the Vibrants right now this is the best bang for your buck stock or not. Fast processor, very customizable, 14gig storage STOCK with an external slot to increase that to only the limits of microSD cards.
My opinion is the casual user will not notice a difference in 2.1 2.2 or 2.3 aside from some cosmetics which can be imitated by many free market apps. Casual user.....
For the non casual user I will reiterate what my fellow enthusiast have already pointed out. We are blessed with some REALLY talented ROM developers that have been nothing but generous with their time and efforts.
I have never gone to a manufacturer for support on any phone I have owned. Majority of the time the communities solve the problem 1000x faster.
I would also like to point out I am not biased to this phone because I own it lol, it just happens to be the one I own currently. I for one LOVE my Vibrant. I have had a g1, my touch, every iphone and some in between.
I have only used two other android phones: the Mytouch 4G and the G2. Both are hands down a much better user/android experience than the Vibrant i now own.
The only thing that makes me think about keeping the vibrant over these other phones is that the vibrant kicks their asses when it comes to audio playback, the quality is noticeably better.
Appart from that, battery life on the vibrant is lame, the screen is big but the colors are off, withes are actually blueish. The stock software is horrible, touchwiz is a joke, seriously, so is the fact that this thing still runs 2.1.
For the more that people talk about the speed of this phone, i found it to be incredibly laggy and slow, from apps to file transfers.
Ironically the best thing about the vibrant is that it made me use my phone a lot less than the Mt4G or the G2. The G2 made me a very anti-social person.

vibrant or nexus S
Currently have the iphone 4 from a trade I did with my nexus one. Going back to android! Stuck on which to choose the nexus S or the vibrant. Seems as if both phones are pretty much the same. Save a few hundred with the vibrant or go with the S
Thanks for all the answers, I got the Vibrant!!!!
Now, when it arrives, then need to do some reading on roms, flash, root, etc as I dont know anything about them....
To get full flash in browser, and to get GPS to work fully (if it does not work, hopefully it will) what ROM is the best to flash? And by flashing that rom, will I lose any of the stock rom features?
Because my vibrant will have stock 2.1

I said the same thing to the T-Mobile Reps. a couple months ago The phone has actually changed the way I use smartphones. Before I was always tethered to my smartphone, now I have to make sure I don't forget to pick it up when I go or leave some place. I don't really use it that much. It's just not fun. I tend to carry my notebook with me, now, and of course my ZuneHD
I think my next phone will almost certainly have a full QWERTY slide-out. Swipes way of automatically adding typos to the dictionary is annoying. I spent like an hour last night just removing typos that kept registering as words when trying to send texts and stuff.
My thought is that the Vibrant is the best media device on the market right now. Great codec support, best screen, excellent storage.
I've considered buying the Nexus S to use as a phone and to keep the Vibrant like it's an iPod Touch, just a movie/music/game device.

My Nexus One will be arriving tomorrow!

Firstly I'll just say hi to everyone (this is my first ever post on XDA)
And yea, almost 2 years after the Nexus One was originally released, I am just about to own one.
I've had a HTC Legend since May 2010 (I was unaware of the Nexus One at that time, because of this buying the Legend has always been a mistake IMO), and I'm tired of it, plus it has lots of software issues, and I've never really thought or attempted to root it.
And so, with my Legend's performance getting worse day by day, I thought I'd get myself a present for Christmas. I considered the Galaxy Nexus, but as I was buying the phone outright, I just couldn't justify paying £510 (+ shipping) for it, and ended up buying a new N1 from Amazon UK for £275 (that price includes shipping).
Since waiting for the phone to be delivered, I have been obsessing over vidoes of it, and forums. I have actually looked at around 100threads on this forum (how sad?!) over the last 48 hours. But, in the course of doing so I have become smitten with this community and the help it offers to those who ask for it.
So I look forward to joining this well established community, and finally owning a Nexus One!
Greetings Dorset,
Enjoy your Nexus One
Yours Sincerely,
Surrey.
P.S Good choice of phone, but look after that power button! (Trackball wake is a must).
Yeah the Power Button issue definitely concerns me, but I'll probably root after a few months, just so I can be sure that the rest of the hardware is okay.
In terms on Custom ROMs, everyone seems to have CM7 on their N1. Is this generally considered to be one of the best ROMs, or is there another reason for its popularity?
Oh, and Hai Surrey
Also make sure to make use of changing the color of trackball notifications. I don't one an N1 anymore [ I went to an HD2 since], but I loved the notification light on the trackball more than any other phones notification LED.
I'll definitely be making use of Trackball notifications for sure.

Basically, this phone is too underpowered for properly running Sense builds, and the ones that were ported have always been with problems, the only relatively stable one being Froyo Sense 1 build ported from Desire by eViL D:.
This leaves it with stock, CM7 and MIUI.
Personally, for this phone I prefer MIUI - IMHO it's far more useful than CM7, containing many nice Sense bits while being small and fast (smooth).

I beg to differ.
HyperSense is perfectly stable, as is Revolution (though he continues to add features and change things up so issues could arise in new builds). I use HyperSense as a daily with absolutely no issues.
As for MIUI, I'd agree that its a great choice also...though i ALWAYS install LauncherPro because i love the features MIUI packs but absolutely derad the iPhone look.
Just my .02.
Welcome to XDA man!
phone is not underpowered main disadvantage is it lacks internal memory when talking about sense roms.Despite of this many people have successfully ported gb sense to n1 without graphical glitches ( thanks to kernel developer fogot name ) other bugs.go ahead and try;u will definately love them

I happened to have N1 and MT4G at the same time (now the N1 is gone), and I can compare their performance first hand.
N1 is seriously underpowered, graphics-wise and storage-speed-wise, to run Sense.
Internal memory disadvantage can be overcome by various SD-EXT utilization techniques.
And Sense doesn't have trackball wake.
dbasabe did great work, but it doesn't turn N1 into a capable Sense device.

Not many people would like to buy a cellphone which was released one year ago since more and more new devices come out in a real fast way.
But believe me, you won't regret for this and hope you can enjoy it, if you have any problems in using your cellphone, you are welcomed to this forum!
I agree on the post above. I just decided to buy a Nexus one despite of all the high-powered android devices nowadays. I guess I just simply love the look and feel of this phone.
Anyway, welcome to the forum! A lot of good and helpful folks are here. Cheers!

Awesome! Glad I'm not the only one buying this phone after so long.
So far I am loving it. And considering the price of new phones, I really don't think you'd be getting much more over the N1 for what you get with new phones.
I will use this phone for at least 1 year.
I have the nexus since it's release to canada by google, no power button issue at all, cyanogen is one of the best rom for a lot of device, on the nexus it manage memory well so it's a good choice.
As far as this phone is concerned, it may not be dual core, but it's fast and the only missing feature compared to newer phone are 4G and near field communication, unless you need those you should be happy with the nexus one despite is age!
I personally doesn't see any justification to upgrade yet
besides the touchscreen failures .. its a great phone despite its age

I'm in exactly the same position as you! (and what's more, I'm also from Dorset ) Except my Nexus One came today! It's beautiful! I got mine for about £109 from ebay and I'm also hoping to root and install CM7, as that's what I had running on my old Motorola Milestone (which died and was the reason I bought this) Good luck with this device!
One of the reasons why CM7 is so popular, is because it is pretty much the only truly custom build based on AOSP out there. There are a lot of AOSP builds that are very basic and don't deviate much from stock, and then there are a much larger amount of builds that are based off the CyanogenMod code base. MIUI is one of those.
But MIUI does make a ton of changes to the CM base, just as CM makes a ton of changes to the AOSP base. It does make MIUI stand out of the pack of CM-derived ROMs out there. While it did start with the CM codebase, they have done an excellent job of distinguishing themselves and giving a completely different user experience than someone running CM.
There are definitely a lot of different builds out there for our beloved N1's, but the two that tend to push the envelope the most and add the most new features are CM and MIUI. Try both out and see how you like them.
And I would recommend rooting much earlier. I had my phone for 3 months before I rooted it, and after I rooted and put CM6 on there (this was well before Gingerbread was released), I kicked myself for not doing it earlier. It runs sooo much better than stock ever did, plus there are a ton of new features.

^completely agree with this guy here. I purchased my N1 (US though, not Canada ) at release. I've had not a single issue with power button or anything for that matter. Out of the "common" N1 issues, the only one I encountered was small dust or dirt particles under the screen. That's kind of my fault because I work outside and I keep my phone in my pocket where stuff does get in my pocket on occasions. I plan on eventually researching how to take the screen off and clean that stuff out.
As for everything else he said, spot on. Phone functions plenty fast enough and internet moves quick enough for my taste (and I use my internet A LOT including teethering to my PC as my main source of internet use). Though I would love to get a Galaxy Nexus, I don't think I can justify to myself (or my wife for that matter! haha) the need to spend $700 on a new phone.

^this guy is right as well. I use to work for U-Haul and I had my N1 for maybe 2 months, didn't know anything about rooting and such as it was my first serious smart phone (I came from an LG Vu) when some younger guy came in with an N1 (only one I've ever seen in person by the way besides mine, to this day) and we started talking about it and he asked me if I had force updated my phone and such. He told me about XDA, I joined up, and here I am today. I force updated with the update.zip that was on here, learned about rooting, and within a week after that I had my phone rooted and never looked back. Did a lot of CM nightly testing and such. I've used CM, MIUI, Sense...you name it...from developers new and old (still miss Evil's work!) and every kernel you can think of.
I'd highly suggest rooting ASAP and taking full advantage of this amazing phone

Wow. I just saw like a BUNCH of names, specifically in the ICS Passion thread, that a had about 12+ posts, and joined this month.
Is this device still that popular? I had expected this device to easily die off by 2012, but then neobuddy came by and dropped his ICS, which got everything back up, and now theres all these new users.
Welcome to everyone! Hah, this community keeps on surprising me.

I am very happy that I bought this phone in July 0f 2010. I was not happy with the broken GPS and laggy performance of 2.1, but if it was not for the phone's problems and my frustrations with waiting for a fix from Samsung I never would have discovered XDA. If you think about it, these same problems presented a challenge to the dev community, it became an ongoing project that became fun and brought together a real "community" around the Vibrant. Now we are all enjoying ICS on an "obsolete" phone. Amazing! Thank you Team Whiskey for Bionix, Einherjar for Trigger, (I never used any GB Roms because I use GPS a lot) and now I have Neobuddy to thank for fully working GPS with ICS....
I was reading another thread tonight started by someone who hard bricked his Vibrant and called T-Mo for a replacement. They told him they were not supporting the Vibrant anymore and he was very bummed. He was persistent however and was overjoyed when T-Mo sent him a Vibrant. A few more people chimed about how Vibrants are not as easy to get now.
Like I said, a great community!
I think a lot of old users are upgrading and so there's a fair amount of used Vibrants on the market for a good price. Buy a used phone with no warranty and naturally the first thing to do is mod it
I bought a Vibrant just because of ICS Passion...and the fact that the HTC Sensation doesn't have an AMOLED screen.

Got mine for $180 off eBay. It was already rooted with CM7 and unlocked. Only downside is that the battery was sort of drained (solved by an Anker battery for $12 though) and there's some bumps and scratches on the bezel.
There's also a seller selling a brand new one for $300 rooted and unlocked. It's a great deal compared to even some of the newest phones out there.
I'm an avid Vibrant users and I've been using XDA for quite some time. I hate the new posting rules but I can deal. And ICS is really sweet as ICS(s)
I have had my Vibe since Oct 2010, I have been looking for a new phone and really want a Nexus but will not buy new without warranty. Right now I am quite happy with my Vibrant but really want a bigger screen with higher resolution. I also want to be able to turn the GPS radio on and off without having resident process draining the battery. Before anyone says go back to a 2.2 or 2.1 ROM, I just can't do it. I have tried but I just can't go back to an early OS build. I can't even go back to a GB ROM since I have had ICS. All earlier OS builds just feel to antiquated. To me it would be like going back to Windows 98 because there are a few DOS based games that don't run in Windows 7 X64.
With that said, I can fully understand why we have new users. The Vibrant is still leagues better than any new mid-range devices and can run toe to toe with all but the Newest High End phones that came out late Winter last year. I will be sad when giving up this very trustworthy device when I finally do. My wife will get it after me so at least it will stay in the household.
Hi! I'm new here, how can I flash a root to my phonezz?

RTFF!!! *similar to RTFM but with Forum replacing Manual*
I am suprised too, its a great phone, but before ics came out it was pretty quiet around here. Its still the same old question though, how much farther can the vibrant go? Im hanging on to mine, no telling what might leak.
Just sold mine.. There's going to be a few new members as someone else said because the resale market. I personally don't think I will ever sign a cell contract again.. If the phone I'm using loses support or is dead here, marketplace for new one, and sell the old one.

Solid device
I've had a vibrant since December 2010. Found one for myself and my girlfriend from shady backstreet dealers in Houston for $230 and a brand spanking new one for $250 . I've been flashing it since shortly after I received it. Bionix was solid. I was a bit disappointed with 2.3 roms in general and then ICS passion came out. It is the best ROM I've ever used hands down. I've yet to see the stutter that sometimes accompanied 2.2 and 2.3 roms. Apps maybe take a tiny bit longer to load than on CM7 but the general interface is so damn smooth it makes the occasional app launching non-problematic.
Now if only Swype would get updated to be compatible with ics...

I think December 21st 2012 is when the vibrant will die off. Whenever doomsday supposedly is this century.

NO. YOUR DOING IT WRONG.
you forgot to water it. anything with roots needs water to be kept alive. unless you want a brick. water it. definitely.
Well, actually the ICS neobuddy put out is what brought me here. I've learned quite a bit over the last could weeks. Root\ICS has really brought new life to my phone.

Worth going from Verizon to p6800?

Got my nexus 7 and I like it but like my 7.7 much better. However I'm tired of waiting for Verizon and I don't use the cell radio anymore.
In your opinion is it worth it to sell it and get the p6800 so I can get ICS now and have a better chance of future roms? I don't need the 3g if the p6810 is better.
I've tried them all (excite, nexus) and I keep coming back to this guy. Wish it was a little faster but otherwise its the best.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I would get it, you will not regret it. Currently running cm9 version of ICS and is excellent. 3g is always a good idea to have, I am using straight Talk and no issues for close to 4 months. Who knows when the Verizon version will get ICS, plus not that much development going on with the Verizon at the minute.

Thanks!
Would you say there's a noticeable speed difference between honeycomb and ICS on the 7.7?

You know that CM9 is available for the Verizon i815, right? The performance difference is night and day. I will never go back to honeycomb. I may flash the official ICS when it drops for radio updates or to tinker, but CyanogenMod is where its at.
I don't know why you'd want to use touchwiz'd ICS, but if that's your intention, you can wait it out, or get the WiFi/3g version.

I saw that, but also saw all the messages about bricking your device. Makes me a bit wary.
I don't know much about rooting, flashing roms, etc.

Just want to post a little update... Looks like I'm stuck with the Verizon 7.7. I put it on eBay with a reserve and it ended at $340! The tablet has all of the original accessories and looks like new! Thankfully I paid eBay's exorbitant reserve listing fee and it didn't sell.
I guess the Nexus 7 has destroyed the market for these smaller tablets. I'm not sure if I can stomach paying around $200 to go from this one to the P6800. (I have learned my lesson about buying tablets from Verizon/AT&T, etc! Wi-Fi or international from here on out...)
I guess the average person doesn't know (or care) about the benefits of this versus the 7 (and I'm not knocking the 7, I have one):
AMOLED, bigger screen, thinner, microsd, two cameras, haptic feedback, hdmi/mhl...
I took this into consideration before buying the i815. I decided that it was worth it since I plan on staying on Verizon for awhile and this is a really nice tablet and I prefer the size over a 7".

New to this section!

Hello! Upgraded from a 6210 to the I815 and I am absolutely amazed at the difference! Feels like it's the tablet I wanted all along.
Bought it off eBay for $299, and just looked at VZs website last night and they're selling them for $279 with tax only would've saved $7 after tax but oh well.
How is everyone liking the ICS upgrade? Any complaints about the hacked version?
Hope to learn a lot here!
Mine is working great. I wish I could run CM10 and get full hardware support, but since it lacks a few things I want, I'm using the hacked Verizon ICS. No complaints other than not liking bloatware/TouchWiz.
Welcome!
You'll find it a little quieter here than in the 7plus forum, but there is development going on still. I am actually quite surprised at the speed and fluidity of the lp10 update. If I was forced to use it I probably wouldn't mind. I'm using locerra's cm10.1 port and am excited for the next release.

This tab remains my daily driver despite owning other tabs. Nothing compares to display and overall satisfaction. Honestly, had the Note 10.1 shipped with SAMOLED it would absolutely blow away ANYthing Apple produced or can produce. In the meantime, once the ICS ROM is installed the 7.7 is all one can ask for in a portable tab. Loaded movies/TV shows on a 64G uSD and enjoy on the plane with BT headset.
Play with it but I'd suggest before you get "flash-happy" read as much as you can about the SuperBrick bug that afflicts this and a couple other Samsung tabs.
Yes whatever you do, do not factory reset in the OS.
