OTA's after PwnMyMoto... - Droid Ultra General

Are we going to have to flash stock again to update to 4.3 or 4.4? Or will safestrap do the trick since pwnmymoto hijacks the stock recovery?

I want to know too.. thanks

Yes.Flash official rom with rsd lite from http://sbf.droid-developers.org/

There is a thread about this on the moto x forum it looks like root can survive using voodoo and flash recovery here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466191. However there is a catch 22 as of right now voodoo does not work on 4.3. So my guess is you can protect root on 4.2.2 but voodoo won't let you restore root once on 4.3. The dev is working on fixing this. But it will work for the camera update.

How to"re root" a500 after receiving ics ota from Acer

I did some searching and did not find a direct answer to this. Feel free to lock this thread if this has been answered.
I flashed back to my original stock ROM from when I rooted my device. I went through the series if updates, to this morning and and updated to ics. I have lost root access. So the question is.... Is there a way to root my device on ics without downgrading. I got to have my AD free and battery saving app

Or if someone could post a link that would be great! Thank you!

this worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546593
I saw this earlier. I guess the leak could be what I have? I will have to check the firmware and compare it to what is listed. Thanks btw I will try this later tonight and update if this worked.

I have same situation. I had rooted HC 3.2.1. Yesterday I made the update to stock ICS. I have to say that I am not happy with this new rom. It is not so smooth and fast that I expected. I am intrested to install some nice and fast custom rom. How to do it? What is need to be done to root and install the ClockworkMod??????
Worked perfectly and easily on mine. Acer_AV041_A500_1.033.00_PA_CUS1
I used the method as above, coming from the stock ota. And it worked I was able to use the battery saver and TB. I don't have a custom recovery, in order to do a back up for the time being but that is okay for now.
Edit: I see there is a bunch more threads started with this same topic so feel free to shut this down.
Hey did you unroot before installing the OTA ICS update? Also, what about recovery?
Acer_A500_041.205.01_COM_GEN2
Just to clarify, the root method for the ICS leak works on the US ICS OTA? (Acer_A500_041.205.01_COM_GEN2)
I just want to make sure, as I am being offered the OTA update from stock rooted Acer_A500_7.014.02_COM_GEN2. I want to make sure I can re-root if I do the update. Otherwise, I'll just wait for a CWM-flashable rooted version. Or has someone already posted that that I've missed?
Yes I was rooted. Then went back to my original stock ROM and stock recovery then went through all the updates. I updated this morning to the stock ics from Acer. Then used the thread above to root again. However I do not have a custom recovery at the moment but root access apps are working just fine. Which is all I need for now.(I live in southern Michigan)
thanks. A question about your custom recovery...Does Acer Recovery Installer no longer work to install CWM again? Or have you just not attempted to re-install CWM?

okay cool thanks. What did you use to unroot? For flashing back to stock recovery I will use "Acer Recovery Installer".
I tried using iconiaroot which I used to root but it still won't unroot my tablet. I even tried restarting and still nothing.
I lost root when doing the updates to clarify. And no I do not have a recovery at the moment, which I don't need because I am running ics with rooted apps that is all I need. I have no reason to flash a custom ROM. I will let the developers work with this for a bit and I will probably check it or later

Okay great thanks. Glad to know it still worked, flashing the ota update with still having root. Only thing that worries me is I flashed back to stock recovery using that program an went I booted to recovery, it was exclamation point inside a triangle. Hope that doesn't affect my update process.

I hope a root option comes out that doesn't require a ROM like gingerbreak. Maybe it's not possible for ICS or there aren't any developers interested in working on it, I don't know, but I'll wait.
It shouldn't your stock recovery is different then a custom recovery ie cwm. You will have to find another thread or something to flash a custom recovery. If your wanting to have a custom ROM. I have no need for it. So to put this into a nut shell.
Flash back to stock ROM (honeycomb)
Flash stock recovery.
Except the ota.
Use the link in first post to"re root"your device.
You will have a stock ROM from Acer that has root access. No recovery.
I Hope this makes it clear as mud:sly:
Hit the thanks button if any of this helped you, good day.

Just to let you know that you will have recovery if you follow this link.

Wouldn't Rootkeeper be able to restore root after the update? It worked when I updated my Razr to the leaked ICS.

okay. sorry for all the questions, but does it matter what version of HC I'm on? You say flash back to stock, is that just if I was running a custom rom? I can't find the sdcard I have my backups on but I'm running completely stock 3.2.1 HC. Just rooted and running CWM.
No ICS Update for me, Rooted 3.2, Need Help!
I thought having my tablet simply rooted wouldnt cause a big issue, i didnt flash it, im still running 3.2 gen 2 but no update for ics has appeared, when checking for update it says im up to date, ive checked several times, tried looking into it seeing if i had to unroot somehow which ive found no program that will unroot my tablet successfully i do not want to wipe because last time i rooted it wiped and i lost alot of important data i couldnt back up. Someone please advise me or send me the Canadian/USA Update Zip or other location for the official ics. Thanks!

Temporary Unroot Using SuperSU to Perform OTA Updates?

Hi Everyone,
I know there is already a thread about using Voodo OTA Rootkeeper which I believe allows you to temporarily unroot the Nexus 7 in order to apply the 4.1.1 update, but I'm wondering if SuperSU can be used to do the same? Is the process as simple as disabling SuperSU in settings, then applying the system update and then re-enabling SuperSU once the update has been installed? I am currently unrooted and have already installed the 4.1.1 update, but I am intending to root my device soon and am wondering if this process could be used for future updates?
Thanks
Here is a link to the Voodoo OTA guide:

I'd like to know the as well.

IIRC, ota updates won't flash without the stock recovery.

just forget about official ota, deb's cook em to be flashable in custom recoveries, plus paulobrein will update his rom when new updates drop!

do you have to change the recovery when unlocking/rooting if i'm not bothered about installing other roms, but want the ability to run root programs?

No, you don't have to change/flash a different recovery. When using the Nexus Toolkit (which I used this afternoon with great success!), you have the option to keep the stock recovery or flash clockworkmod (CWM). CWM is great if you're flashing custom roms, themes etc. as it's much more flexible (I believe), but if you're main goal is to be able to use root apps, then the stock recovery will be fine

[Q] Should I install the OTA update if I want to root?

Got a new S4. First time I start up, it asks if I want to install OTA update. Will this stop me from rooting the device after? If I root first, can I apply the update after root? What has been the best practice?
Still extremely easy to root the mdl update
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium
Agree. Take the update and then easily install custom recovery/kernel/root without to much trouble.
easy to root with MDL easy to revert back to stock. Ultra noobs :silly: with no patience who can't read would be the only people I could think of that could brick this install...
Ok I'll break it down to it's most easy form. Rooting MDL involves this:
1) Take the update from sprint. That will get you to all MDL (radio, rom and kernel)
2) flash a custom recovery. I really don't care which.
3) flash a custom kernel. Shabbys works well.
4) flash busybox/supersu zips
5) profit.
It's not hard to root MDL. if you think this is hard you should have tried rooting the HTC 4g LTE. with a locked bootloader. THAT was hard.
Oh, so even if we accepted the OTA, everything is fine? I thought there was a kernel issue?

There is, hence why rawintellect stated that you need to "flash a custom kernel."

Canadian I337m MK6 updatw

Hi...
I am a nexus user.. When a Google update comes out. I just look for rooted version of update and I install it. Or I install ota and reroot.
Now I have s4.. Rooted.. And cwm recovery. Mk6 is out... I Dont know what to do. I Dont want to erase my setup. Do I just wait for someone to post the update? Flash it with cwm or Odin? Do I unroot first or get a version that is rooted?
Any help to direct me with my options for upgrading so mk6 without losing cwm or root would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
best option is to update the baseband using the modem file here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542043 which you install using Odin
then flash a 4.3 rom such as GE using CWM
this avoids any issues with the OTA or stock 4.3 firmware, retains cwm and root and gives you the functionality of 4.3
Thanks for the reply and info. Ok.. So modem I can follow instructions in the thread above. No problem. But where do I get mk6 flashable file? What is GE? I am currently on rooted samsung stock 4.2.2. Is GE a custom ROM? Normally when flashing a custom ROM u need to start clean as far as I read. Can I just update my stock with stock? Any one takes ota from samsung and adjust to prevent losing root and cwm?
Thanks

Just figured you mean Google edition .. I understand I can go Google (which needa wipe) but that is not what I am asking now. I would like to update my samsung image to mk6 (4.3 without wipe). If I wanted to go to Google image I would have updated long ago when 4.4 came out but I have been waiting for Samsung's update.
How do samsung rooted stock users update their phones?

[Q] A little behind on this but can I do 4.4 system update if I'm rooted?

I've been putting it off for a while. I'm flashed to cwm and still on TouchWiz. Is there a particular method to doing this system update? I want to get on kitkat and keep my root, or at least be able to get root access again afterwards.
Goes look in development section. .unknown has a stock rooted...random has a stock unrooted that's easy to root

I don't know what this means, in particular. Can you link me to something? I ran cyanogenmod up to 11 when my s3 died and have been out of the community for a bit. I just want to put the OTA kitkat update onto my phone and then get root.

You can get on kitkat if you flash a kitkat rom or by odining stock NAE tar file (Please note that this will give you knox bootloader). If you visit Sacs Custom Rom 4.4.2 kitkat rom (link in my signature below). It will explain how to go from a previous version to his kitkat rom.
Basically, in a nutshell...you need to have the NAE modem (which is explained in the thread) and specific recoveries to use during flashing. Visit the thread to find out more
