Updating an apk - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the best way to update an apk (not from play). Remove old version first and install newer OR just install newer version on top of older version ?

Depends on how it was install to begin with sir.
1. If not through the PlayStore and is a modded apk, and new one is from the same person, yes install onto most likely.
2. If replacing a Stock app with one created by another, then most likely un-install previous version, unless dev states doesn't need to be.
The problem is this is a very generic question and not enough info.

I think that helps. It is a newer version of same app/author so over top is ok. That's easy. Thanks

Market Flash version not optimized for Tegra 2?

Hey, just happened to be browsing Phandroid and saw an article that the Market version of Flash should NOT be installed on the Atrix because it's not optimized for Tegra 2 and the preinstalled version on the phone is... of course, that was on the list of things downloaded on day 1 not realizing that Flash was apparently already on the phone. Should I uninstall the market app? And if I do, will that restore the phone to the built in "optimized" version... or will i lose Flash all together. Currently Flash works on the phone. (I verified that the Market version of Flash does indeed have a message on the "What's new" tab stating it shouldn't be installed on the Atrix)
My friend did this day one too. He fixed it by factory reset. now he gets 60fps flash on many websites... I'm seething with jealousy. (Atrix in the mail)
This is quite interesting, i don't remember installing flash from the market on my phone, but when i search for it, it says it's already installed. I'm doing a factory reset now to see if flash is on there to begin with or if i did infact install it from the market once
Damn. When I got my Atrix I installed all my apps through the Android Market from my PC...including Flash(apparently?). Don't want to do a factory reset so I'll just wait for a fix.

Let us know what version comes preloaded on the phone
I finished my factory reset.
Under "my apps" in the market, flash is not listed. However, if i search for flash in the market it says installed.
I'm an android newb and I hate flash so I know that I did not install it. However, it is IS installed on the phone: version 10.1.120.10.
It doesn't show up with the rest of the programs though. You have to go:
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Flash
Do we know if there's an easy way to roll back to that version?
I do believe that if you installed the flash from the market you may be able to use uninstall updates from the manage applications menu.
Not sure though.
Just looked it up on the market and found this in the description:
It SHOULD NOT be installed on devices/tablets with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 super chip including the LG Optimus 2X, Dell Streak 7 and Motorola ATRIX. The pre-installed version of Flash Player is optimized for Tegra 2. Future updates will include these optimizations.

I believe I may be in the same boat as those who have the version from the market... would be much appreciated if anyone has a method for restoring the original version that was installed with the phone.
Did a bit of searching and it seems the Tegra 2 version has been leaked. The version available in the market is 10.1.106.16. The Tegra 2 version should be 10.1.120.10. I've downloaded the leaked Tegra 2 version from the link provided below and tested it out. As far as I can tell, it runs as it should. I'd still like to get the version originally included with the phone if possible, but the leaked version may be a decent alternative for the time being.
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/02/21/potential-xoom-owners-here-is-a-tegra-2-flash-10-1-file/
As warned on the site: Use at your own risk.
I have the Tegra version 10.1.120.10 installed and I don't even can install the market version because it says it is already installed. So where is the problem?
Has anyone tried uninstalling the market version to see what happens?
I removed the update, and now I have no flash...
Well, you can download the market version or download the leaked tegra 2 version I posted above. I haven't had any issues with the leaked version for the tegra 2 so I don't think it's anything to worry about. Definitely going to download the market version again when they release the version built for the tegra 2 though.
I just uninstalled the market version...which totally removed flash from my phone... I then installed the Tegra 2 version from the link above... worked smoothly, no problems (as far as i know!)

Do apps do a check before installing?

Hi, the reason i ask is because when i sideload apps from my n7 to my xperia play, they install fine. When i try to do it to my brothers phone (its not the best of phones tbh) it always says app not installed.
So i just wondered what the reason could be? And could this be overcome by rooting and manually installing it?
Thanks
Not yet. Android Jelly Bean 4.2 will though. Read about it on google.
I mean check hardware specs ect, not the actual app for malware
I know this is a bit off topic.. But some apps will soon be verified by your device id. This is the same id that google wallet uses. It will make it so when you but a app on one device you can NOT install it on another.Ti Backup already has a built in way to help with this during back up restore.
The above is only from what i have read and is likely not totally true as its not implemented yet so who really knows .

It's because the phone is not compatible with what you are trying to install (either in hardware or minimum Android OS version).
Is the app you are trying to install offered to the phone on the official Google marketplace? If not, then there is a reason why.....

Nope, its not offered, but sometimes they can work when not offered.
I was just wondering if that was simply the reason, or if the apps generally cant install on a phone without specific specs, i.e android version X or multitouch
Thanks for the answer
i forgot about this.. I have used aptoide to side load a few apps that i know work on nexus 7 but in the play store show not compatible..This is not meant to Pirate apps.. I used this to install a messenger app that would not install and a few games that i have purchased...

How to root (SGP561) Z2 Tablet Verizon, new update 23.0.1.E.0.208 (4.4.4)

Hi guys, finally I've found a way to get the latest update 23.0.1.E.0.208 (4.4.4) without losing root on this tablet.
The method is the same as the method here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155), but we will use the files for Xperia Z2 Tablet Verizon instead of files for Xperia Z2.
First, you MUST BE on an older version (17.1.D.0.437) with root and XZDualRecovery
You need these files:
1. New 23.0.1.E.0.208 update FTF file (you can use XperiFirm to get it)
2. PRFCreator v0.5.zip (I tried the later version v0.8 but it didn't work, so better to use v0.5)
3. Latest stable SuperSU update package
4. XZDualRecovery flashable patched version (in the attachment) (note that the original version from [NUT] will not allow you to mount system rw)
Then follows step 4 to 11 in the instructions in the above thread for Xperia Z2 and replace all the files for Xperia Z2 with the files you've just got.
Good luck!
thanks for this, will try it this week...
noticed any issues with this update on the verizon tab?
Is it possible to flash back to 4.4.2, to root? Sadly, mine came with the newest update.

Worked like a charm! Thank you for posting this.
How come this cannot be posted as a flashable zip? Why do we need to create our own file? Just curious.

My internet connection sucks. It takes long to upload large files.
Trying to do this, however it seems we need a custom recovery already installed. Trying to install the XZDualRecovery from the installer file I downloaded but it just hangs at libdvm opened. Any other way to install a custom recovery so I can follow the rest of the guide to get my replacement tab rooted?

Sounds to me like you need to flash the old ftf first, then root and then install the custom recovery. Root only works on the older firmware linked above.

Thanks, I thought you had to have a recovery already installed for that. Downloaded everything I need plus old FTF file, can't seem to get it to work right. Think I am having driver problems even tho it works fine in fastboot mode through ADB. Can't get Sony PC companion to work either even tho I've downloaded pretty much every driver I can find for it. I'm on Windows 8.1
I never managed to get it to work on windows 8.1 by had a windows 7 laptop laying around and that worked fine. I would recommend finding a non 8.1 computer. Good luck.

Got it working. I didn't know I had to have the unknown sources checked. Also I didn't realize I was plugged into a 3.0 port in the back of my PC, so that didn't help.
Now that I'm on the old version and rooted, I saw some people had success with updating to the newest update for VZW and keeping root. Can anyone else confirm this? I have TWRP and everything on my HTC, but my tablet I would rather not mess with it as much. The steps in this guide are pretty involved.

I am on the newest firmware and rooted, so I can confirm that it works.
It's not as bad as it seems. Just follow the steps and you will be a better human for it! Happy hacking and debloating.

Yup just did this, everything is working great, thanks!
My camera doesn't work after updating. Every time I hit the capture button it just freezes. I'd like to just wipe and do a clean install. Can I just do it in TRWP? Will I lose root?

There was a leaked Lollipop update I saw today on XperiaBlog. Could this method be used to update?
Update: worked like a charm. Running lollipop with root and nuts dualboot

Is it possible to have this uploaded again since it's no longer available. ftf file for 17.1.D.0.437
Also PRFCreator v0.5.zip since the earliest one available is v0.7.
Thanks!

Spoof a different version of Android to install apps

I had a question that Googling has not answered.
I have my old S4 laying around and want to give it to my cousin to play Pokemon GO. Before I go through the process of finding a stable ROM and then upgrading/flashing said ROM, I wanted to ask the XDA community if its possible to "spoof" the version of Android the device is running.
Currently its on CM 10, which is Android 4.3.1. It appears Pokemon GO required Android 4.4+.
Is it as simple as updating the build.prop file? If so, which lines?
If not, is this even possible given the current circumstances?
Thanks in advance.

Is there any way to install the latest version of android on my tablet. Works no problems but it's outdated. Been trying to find out if I can just download and do like you do Windows. Anyone see a how too or something and can point me in the right direction that would be great.

The newest version of Android for this tablet is Android 5.1 but it runs fairly slow and isn't really worth it I personally prefer KitKat because it still supports most apps and runs pretty smooth. To install a room you need to root then unlock your bootloader.

Hi, I recently bought an Acer A500 without realising that the software updates were no longer supported by Acer. The current build is Acer_A500_1.105.01_EMEA_GEN3 and it is on Android 3.01. I am wanting to upgrade to a newer version as this software seems to be outdated and doesn't seem to run properly. Is it possible to install a Full ROM directly over this to get to Android 4.0 or do I have to update incrementally? I have no experience in dealing with this so would appreciate any help I can get. So far any links I've found to the full ROM's are inactive. I've downloaded the following OS from the Acer website but not sure whether I can simply run these to upgrade: Acer_7.014.02.041.203.01.WW.GEN1_A32H_A and Acer_AV041.A500.RV21RC03.WW.GEN1_A40I_A.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If they are zip files take the Acer_AV041.A500 one and rename it update.zip put it on an SD card and turn on your tablet holding the volume up button + power(may be volume down) and it should update to ics(4.0). If you want to update past that( to so thing like KitKat(4.4) you need to root your tablet and unlock your bootloader there is a couple tutorials on this website on how to do that. If you want links to everything just ask me.

Thanks for the quick response. There is an update.zip file in that zip folder so will use that one. Does is matter that it's not EMEA_GEN3? Is there any benefit to updating from 4.0 to KitKat 4.4?

I would try to flash that any way, it probably won't work but it's worth a shot. The only benefit to getting kitkat would be more supported apps from the app store but a lot of apps don't work anyway because this tablet does not have neon support.

Have tried to install it but just got the Android logo with an orange exclamation mark. I'll try the other file but expecting the same result. If that doesn't work, would I be likely to have better success if I root it and install custom software?

Yes but, it is a fairly complicated process(compared to most other devices). I would see if you can find any firmware downloads for this device and try those before you try installing a custom rom.
