I've been looking for a Windows Tablet to replace my Kindle Fire HD. This may be it. (Almost exactly the same size and weight.) The Lenovo Miix 2 is another possibility, but its not out yet. I'm getting the 64gb version which isn't set to ship until Nov 1, so if anyone gets a 32 GB version in the next week - let us know what you think!

Thats a slight disappointment but on a $299 device you really can't complain, excellent that one is supported in the first place.
Does this tablet or any of the other 8" Windows 8.1 tablets have USB host using an OTG adapter with the microUSB port.

I've heard that it does, not having one I cant confirm.
Every x86 Windows box I know of acts as a USB host. The more pertinent question is whether these 8" can supply 0.5A, or more likely, 0.1A. The hope is that there's enough juice to power your USB key, but I really doubt a 2.5" USB HDD is gonna work. Of course you can always add external power.
BTW, here's a nifty gadget peeps may want to pick up for USB charging

Hmm, kinda cool. I just have a few hacked up USB cables instead though.
You can always use a Y splitter cable or mains powered hub to provide external power to your device. Y splitter cable plus one of those portable USB power supplies for charging phones from may work nicely.
For anyone to look through...here's the link for the Dell Venue Pro 8 User Manual.
Very enlightening!
Noted the one comment in there that the microUSB does not connect to a computer??? Odd.

Not at all. Windows 8 and RT do not support acting as a USB device like android and iOS do. So you cannot connect them with a micro USB to the computer. No windows 8 or RT tablet so far has supported this feature. They have all so far supported USB host so you can always use a memory stick, most likely the venue does support it too, no reason not to (not even cost, seriously).

I ordered one too. I definitely have a gadget addiction. This is my 4th windows tablet. I have the Ativ 500 t, the Lenono 10in, and the Acer 8in. I have been looking for the right fit for work and 8in seems to be the right size. The Acer was better than the reviews but I really want a pen with OneNote. Had the Wacom solution with both the Samsung and Lenovo and hope the Dell version is as good as the SPen

Since you have experience with a stylus and windows 8 together what have you found works best for document editing? Do you prefer to print to one note and then mark it up? I really liked the Note 10.1's system that's basically takes a screen shot and lets you draw on it but the price/performance is not there so I ordered the venue pro 8 instead.
Well I also have the Note 10.1 too but don't use it for work so I am not doing any editing of documents
I use the pen in windows to take hand written notes in OneNote and to markup documents. The biggest value is OneNote and the integration into Outlook, office and Windows Explorer.
Hopefully this is the perfect device for me to take in and out of meetings, tie meeting notes through Outlook and One Note. I think this size will be perfect since it is lighter and smaller than the Acer. My only concern is the pen writing experience.

Or you could run it in Virtualbox, but yeah, that might be cool tool.
I was surprised to see that the digitizer in this is pressure sensitive and it's made by Synaptics, not Wacom, like on the Galaxy Note series.
I only wish the resolution was a tad better, but that's what the Dell Venue 11 pro is for, I guess.
The price point is very nice for both though, might have to pick up my first Win8 device, although I was planning on skipping the whole OS.

I just bought an Acer Iconia A100 tablet this morning from my local Walmart. It included a $50 gift card. I checked all the local Walmarts a few weeks ago and they said that they had two on order per store.

So far the A100 is running circles around my Archos 70s, that is currently on it's way back to CompUSA. Both theA100 and my Motorola Photon are now a replacement for my Alienware M11x on road trips. Even the gaming on the two is workable. I have the dock for my Photon, to use it with the full Firefox browser on a TV.
I am using a Griffin Passport Nook case, until some cases come out for the A100. It fits the tablet fine and gives it a rigid lcd protection. It does block the rear camera.
just an fyi since you just bought it. I know this week best buy is offering a 100 gift card with a purchase of the Acer tablet. You can see it on ther website on the tablet page. Maybe Walmart will match it? Edit sorry that's for the a500 not 100
A500
Walmart also has a $100 gift card on the A500.
Did you have to ask for the gift card or was it in the box?? I went to Wally Worlds site and didn't see any mention of a gift card.
thanks
Gift card...
They had a small black and white piece of paper, with the gift card details. The paper was actually covering the price of the A100. He had to open the case to see the price tag.
The sales person rang up the gift card at the register.
Just picked one up with the same deal from Walmart and I am loving this thing.
It rocks.. I have played around with quite a few tablets and I own a Nook Color with I converted to CM7, nothing I have messed with compares to this, at least for me..
I love this thing so far, size is perfect, 10" tablets are just too bulky for my liking.
Still figuring this thing out but it's a winner so far, no I need to figure out how to root it and if there are any roms for it.
Funny thing is, I like the interface so much stock, I am not in that much of a rush to change it. That's pretty unusual for me.

As a fellow Archos 70s user, I have a couple questions.
1) How does the battery life compare to your A70?
2) Are the charging connectors the same? In the picture they look similar. I was very disappointed that the Archos didn't support charging over USB and it looks like this is the same way. I picked up a nice 2amp USB AC adaptor and a USB to 3.5mm cable so I don't have to carry the Archos brick when travelling. It would be awesome if it would also work with the A100.
Acer Iconia A100 - Walmart and reply Re Battery Life
1. Our local Walmart has 6 - the staff didn't know they had them or what they were and had them locked up - wow big shock
2. Battery life - we once had the Archos A70 and returned it for very poor battery life - 3 hours doing nothing till zero but that said, we have heard of people getting 8 hours (partly by doing things like turning off WiFi when not needed)
3. The best I have read the Iconia A100 getting is around 5 hours which is kind of crappy but hey for a 1GB, dual core Honeycomb 3.2 at $278 - I am scooping one up and hopefully replacing Galaxy Tab 7" WiFi (which I love) but is slow and Samsung is not bringing- as far as Samsung knows - Gingerbread to the GTab WiFi

1. I'm getting around five hours of battery life. With on/off wi-fi and GPS use.
2. The chargers are different the 70 needs 5 volts and 2 amps.
The A100 need 12 volts at 1.5amps.
I bought a small GPS case that I use for the various bricks I have.

Not really... tablets are very power hungry and its much easier, smaller and cheaper to do 12v @1.2A than 5V at 2.5A.
A standard USB cable can only carry 5v @ 0.5A. not even enough to provide power while the tablet is running.

No. A standard USB port can carry 5V @ 0.5A. Cell phones routinely come with 1A+ chargers. I have a 2A USB charger that I use for most of my devices.
Key word there is "charger" the charger can supply it, but a standard USB port does not supply more than 0.5 A or 500 ma. A common usb cable will neither carry nor charge more than that. Special USB power cables can in some cases because they use extra pins and wires that are not in a standard USB data cable to carry the extra current, and the companion device knows when the special cable is plugged in because the extra pins are active..

Nexus 7 TV Out?
I'm considering a purchase but like the idea of watching my movies on a hotels TV screen.
So is TV out possible with the Nexus 7 either with an RCA composite output via the 3.5mm headphone socket
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-5M-Long-...#ht_1981wt_689
Or
Using something like this micro-USB to HDMI type connector?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Micro-USB-...#ht_4714wt_922
I was wondering this too,but couldn't findthe answer. with a mod ROM, special software and adapter, will it ever be possible to get any video out of the device?
Nexus 7 16gb, unlocked, rooted, stick drive, trinity 7 kernel, stock OS.
theres no hdmi or any physical way to connect it to the tv yet. The best bet by the looks of it is by using a miracast dongle (which by the way, dont quite exist yet....) its basically another standard similar to DLNA, take a look here:

Another possibility coming out soon is ESRLabs Android Transporter using the Raspberry Pi. My Raspberry will be here today, been wanting one to play with for a long time. Not ETA for the Transporter but hopefully soon.

Most likely not going to get a direct reply from ESR. The email address they have posted gets you on their Mailing List so when they have something to say they will post via that and their website. Can't imagine how many people are pinging them daily about their project.
I can't wait until they release something. Even at 150ms latency, for what I want to use it for it won't matter (not much of a gaming guy). Latency will have no effect on images, watching videos (netflix, google etc..) on the big screen which is where it will end up.
Another option is the HTC MediaLink.

Cool. figured they would be inundated.
I setup my RPi this weekend. have it now running headless with a WiFi dongle. Have it setup to work with both a DVI monitor and the big screen via HDMI.
Just streamed a full 1080p movie to the Big Screen from it, though the video was on the RPi not from another source. Output was flawless.
Can't wait to see their software and start doing the same from the Nexus 7.
I dont understand google.
They want to sell movies, but you cant connect it directly to a TFT / TV via HDMI or similiar to watch it on your big screen.

I received my raspberry pi two weeks ago and LOVE it now that I have it running OpenELEC. Unfortunately I ordered from two different companies since the turnaround time sucked and just received the second one. Allied is super hard to get ahold of for refunds so I guess I'm just going to use the second one for the living room as soon as this gets released so I can stream Netflix.

An USB-storage works with a GTO-adapter and the app Nexus Media Importer.
So for HDMI could there in future maybe also be an app to enable some kind of USB to HDMI-Adapter ?
"As of today, the company says that the shipping build of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean doesn't support the Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) which would allow it to double as an HDMI port, nor advanced USB On-The-Go (OTG) functionality."
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/29/3127278/nexus-7-mhl-usb-otg
Aww, looks like no mhl here. The point is that it wud have likely Increased the price. And the whole idea of "Google play" is that you don't HAvE to connect ur Tablet to TV, since all. Movies u bot or rented are available from any device on Google play site. My TV at home is internet enabled like a lot of TV s nowadays, so its easy. Also the reason they didn't bother with the storage ... its all supposed to be "web content viewer" type thing. The problem is WiFi or internet is not as common. Outside of some countries like the us or so.
Very good points.
Playing games wireless on the big screen isn't supported yet, is it?
Here in Europe lot of people don't trust the clouds, as they don't know where their data is stored and therefor by which laws it is protected.
As to me and new TV's including wifi streaming:
I try to buy devices to last very long because of the embodied energy a device needs to get produced.
So until a new device doesn't saves more energy then the old cost, or it stops working, it will be used.
(Most devices need more energy to get produced then they consume in their short living time, not to talk about the toxic byproducts... )
I have also a Mediaplayer with wifi, but it is still more complicated to switch it on and switch to streaming instead of plugging the cord of the TV to the Tablet.
Of course to be wireless is/would be a nice thing, but eg. I wouldnt like to sleep next to the wifi router...

I was fortunate enough to be able to buy and test the new Acube iWork 10, a Chinese windows 8.1 10.1" tablet. So here is my review on it if anyone is looking for a win 8.1 tablet at a very reasonable price.
Full Name Cube/ACube iwork 10 U100GT
Specs:
10.1-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen of 1280 x 800 px resolution;
1.8GHZ Intel Atom Bay-Trail Z3740D Quad-core Processor, Intel HD Graphic (Gen7) GPU
2GB of LPDDR3 RAM
Windows 8.1 (Need to be activated by the user themselves)
32GB of SSD built-in Storage
2MP front-facing camera/2MP rear-facing camera
Back-mounted stereo speakers
Wi-Fi 802.11
Bluetooth v4.0
USB 2.0 host (adapter required which does not come in the box)
Micro SD card slot
Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
HDMI V1.4
8,000mAh Li-Po battery
Pros:
- Very quick boot/ Shutdown. About 1.5 seconds!
- Price around $400 (with the case) shipped to Australia from sites like Ali Express
- Build quietly is amazing
- fast and responsive
- The Keyboard case (needs to be bought separately)
- Micro SD card slot
- Battery life- I got about 7-8 hours of usage from this with which is pretty awesome!
- size is impressive compared to other 10 inch windows tablets out there. 258 x 173 x 10.4 mm
- at 604g it is lighter then most windows 10.1 inch tablets out there including the surface tablets.
- Acube will be releasing a Android ROM soon so you can dual boot!!!!!
Cons:
- No USB 3
- No full size USB port
- No full size HDMI port
- 32 GB memory only!
- No use charging and charger seems like it can break pretty easily
- Win 8.1 Pro needs to be activated separately (some might come with it but mine did not)
Screen:
The IPS screen is pretty good, 1280 x 800 px resolution does well. and viewing angles are awesome!. good for watching movies, doing work etc.
build quietly and design:
The build quietly is better then expected feels solid in the had and really nice to use. design and size of the tablet is pretty awesome as well. Does not look cheap! at 604g it is lighter then most windows 10.1 inch tablets out there including the surface tablets. The tablet has a 2-megapixel front camera and 2-megapixel rear camera, both of which can take pictures or interact with Skype sessions. The tablet has accelerometers, G-sensor, and vibration feedback (particularly when you use the Start button), three features that are almost must-haves for this type of product.
Battery life:
The battery life could always be better but for the size I guess its pretty good. I got 7-8 hours on charge which pretty good and compared to laptops this was very welcome. only thing is it does take a while to charge.
The Keyboard case (sold separately)
The case is very well made and really easy to use. It connects to the tablet via a magnet like the surface tablets which I think is pretty cool. It works well, the only thing is the touch pad does not seem to have the gestures which i find annoying (even it it does they dont seem to work for me). the case also turns into a stand which is nice and very stable on a bed etc. I would defiantly recommend get the keyboard case because personally im not use to using windows without one and the windows on screen keyboard does not like to work well with firefox (no auto pop up and takes up most of the screen and this gets annoying very quickly!).
Price in Australian $: As I said above it is about $400 with the case from sites like Aliexpress but I am sure you can find it cheaper from other places.. the actual retail price is RMB1,699 ($281USD). So in saying that we can can compare it to the major brands.
Some points to note
- Pretty cheap for a 10.1" win 8.1 tablet even at $400 but then again you can get a ASUS Transformer Book T100 for around $500-$600 with double the storage space of 64gb with the same processor and specs
- 8 inch tablets like Asus Vivo Tab 8.0 or TOSHIBA Encore 8 for the $400 but then again they are 8inch which in my opinion are a bit small for windows.
Overall thoughts.
I am always weary (as you never know what to expect) about Chinese products yet I always seem to keep buying them and let me tell you they have been getting better and better day by day! I bought a Teclast p98 mini tablet running android and let me tell you it is awesome for the price i paid and running the intel chip. You can read that review i did here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611057.
Price is a bit high for us in Australia if you get it from sites like Aliexpress but in saying when the dual boot android rom is released you will essentially get 2 tablets in one which I guess this worth it! the main disappointment was no full size USB which can get really annoying at times, specially when the adapter did not come in the box so that is an additional cost. Also you need to activate windows on your own but some might come with it (this you will have to confirm on your own).

Thanks for the review and pictures. Having now had your iwork10 for 2 months, how are you finding it? Do you use it daily and what common issues do you experience?
Where did you purchase your device from and would you recommend the device to a friend?
Thanks

Windows 8.1 Driver pack
I'm with one "No-Brand" U100GT for about 2 months. Finally find a kit with all extra drivers needed in one package. Now I've managed to install my Win 8.1 PT-BR version and got everything functional. The next step is search for a dual boot Win / Android solution. Bluestacks runs very slow on 3D games.
Just google "Cube iwork drivers" (I can't post links yet)
The installer is in chinese, but it's easy to guess where to click.
Click OK on the first dialog and wait.
It will unpack the drivers on a folder on the C:root and then run a bunch of .bat.
It's no need for reboot. You can delay it until the end of the install.
You may want to archive the folder for easy re-installation.

Hi, did you find them? I am looking for driver for webcam. After clean install of Windows 10, I am missing two drivers. One is for webcam, and teh other one is for - who knows. The drivers would help me a lot. Thank you

And here go my first impressions of my new Onda V975W Tablet. It has Windows 8.1 (fully, no RT cr*p) preinstalled, 2 GB RAM, Bay Trail quadcore processor (each up to 1.8 GHz) and a Retina Display.

I bought the tablet out of two main reasons. First of all my old Lenovo S10 netbook is dying slowly, so I need a replacement. Secondly I was interested in the Surface tablets, but their prices are way to high in my opinion. Obviously you get a lot for its price, but I do not really need an i7 processor in my tablet. My tablet should be powerful, but does not need to be too much, since for main tasks I still use my bigger main computer. Then my focus got on the Onda V975W tablet. I bought it at eFox for roughly 195€ with sending (slow registered air mail) und customs insurance. Although I chose slow sending, the parcel already arrived two and a half weeks later. Let’s start with the specs:
Specifications:
-Windows 8.1 (no RT)
-9.7 Zoll Display
-2048×1536 Resolution
-2 GB RAM, 32 GB ROM
-5 MP backcamera, 2 MP fontcamera (according eFox)
-MicroHDMI Output
-MicroUSB Input
-MicroSD slot
– 7800mAh Akku (according eFox)
-Intel Z3735D processor
Items delivered:
The tablet was delivered in a worthy looking box with chinese texts on it. Additionally to the tablet itself, not much was given beside. Just a short chinese manual and a charger (5V, 2.5A according to the label). There was no Windows 8.1 or Windows 365 license card put in beside, which was reported to be the case in other boards. On a request the shop answered that this would be simply not part of the product. Since I already have an unused Windows 8 license, this is not a big downside for me, but for people without this could become a hurdle when they want to reinstall Windows.
First impressions:
After the unboxing I was very surprised of the worthy look of the tablet. It is really a look-a-like of the iPad Air (so much, that even iPad Air cases can be used mostly, more on that later). The front has a camera in the top middle inside the white border. I did not try the back- or the front camera yet, I will update this later.
The back is made from brushed aluminium. It feels nicely cool when touched. On the bottom there are stereo speakers. Above them, there are product details lasered in, pretty much like at the iPad. At the top side the HW buttons are placed: Power and the volume rocker. Both seem worthy and have a nice pressure point.
At the top side the ports are placed: MicroSD, MicroHDMI, MicroUSB and headphone jack. Additionally a microphone.
First use:
I already prepared myself, that the tablet arrives in chinese language. At least that was reported for most of the V975W of the latter generations. But my Windows was already changed to english (at least most parts) and an user account called “as” was set up. And wow, the resolution looks amazing! No pixels can be determined at all on the Retina display. A few tweaks later also the last parts of remained chinese language were gone. Also the newest BIOS and drivers were installed. So I started and installed some programs like Thunderbird and Firefox and was happy, since everything ran smoothly. The CPU usage while Idle is at about 0-3%, while about 40-45% of the RAM is used. The latter one can be still optimised, for the case that no applications which heavily use the GPU are used. That’s the case, since the GPU splits up 500 MB of RAM by default. It is said that this can be reduced to 256 MB without problems, but I haven’t tried it yet. A small downside is the small internal memory, since with Windows installed there are just about 11 GB free by default. That’s why I installed most of the programms on my 64 GB microSD card.
Usage:
The touch display responds quick and after a bit getting used to, Windows 8 can be nicely navigated by touch. Just the typing I do not really like on the display. That is why I wanted to have a kind of “Type Cover” from the Surface for my V975W. Good point here, that the V975W is so close to the iPad Air, that even many cases fit. Anyhow, my first try failed. I ordered a keyboard case from Anker for the iPad Air (“Slim Folio Bluetooth Keyboard Case”). With a bit force it fitted, but not really nicely. But the second try worked out. For about 22€ I bought this case with bluetooth keyboard and it sits perfect! Just the ports can not be perfectly reached, so I cutted a small hole for the microUSB (see last picture). Also the backcamera does not sit perfectly over the hole, but this does not bother me, since I never really understood the sense of backcameras for tablets .
The keyboard can be removed (holds via magnets) and the top cover can be moved to the back, very nice for using while sitting.
The keyboard can nicely be used for typing. In fact, I am writing this article on this keyboard. After a few seconds of not using it, it goes into sleep mode and the first keyboard hit is ignored while waking up, but all in all it has a nice respond.
Battery:
The battery I can not really rate yet. According to the shop it has a capacity of 7.8 Ah. The charging takes many hours, also with the delivered charger. At normal usage the battery holds for about 6-7h. Obviously it has to be considered, that the display has a very high resolution and it has a full Windows. I will still make some tests for the battery and will update this part later.
First conclusion:
I do not want to give a final conclusion yet, since this Windows 8 tablet has so many aspects which I did not test yet and might still change my opinion. Untill now I am fully satisfied with my decision. I could not find any other tablet with preinstalled Windows and such a high resolution for this price. As an alternative for a cheap “china-Surface” it pretty much fits my needs (except the internal memory).
It does look nice! But yeah, that 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (those are OK stats for a smartphone, but kind of crap otherwise; my first-gen RT tablet has more) is a deal-killer for me. Thanks for the review though! You may want to mention the MicroSD slot in the feature list at top (better than an iPad in that way!)
Thanks for the microSD card thing, totally forgot to mention it there . Untill now everything works smooth for me, will see if it stays like that.
Ive had my v975w for just over a month now and i love it. its more than met my expectations.
its fast, well designed and battery life is very good for a windows device.
My only compliant is the micro usb is used for charging so you cant use micro usb and charge at the same time but am thats fairly common across a lot of tablets.
i now look at my desktop pc and think "should i pack that away" as i dont see the need for it anymore. (i ditched pc gaming years ago) but i feel cruel abandoning my trusty old pc like ive betrayed it, even though its just a machine, lol am weird i know

was only £1.50 so not much lost if it doesnt work. fingers crossed
any luck with cases?
Ive ordered a bluetooth Keyboard cover that is meant for the ipad air. not arrived yet but hoping it fits ok with the design being identical to the ipad air

You can see my case in the pictures, it is also for the iPad Air. It was really cheap, around 22€ and untill now working fine. I ordered a not fitting one for the first time, but the second was a hit .

assume you mean when its closed. no it doesnt seem to but the is also a little on/off switch on the keyboard so you can just turn it off when your closing it.
only complaint is: the is a backspace button but no delete button, so you cant press ctrl+alt+del to access the task manager but luckily windows 8 has made is easier to access the task manager without pushing ctrl+alt+del.

I think #1 would be the best. It's the only option to charge the phone at the same time!
Agreed, #1 looks great. having the flexibility to use the same cable for laptops/phones or tablets would be amazing. Does it work with the Samsung S9+?
Number 4 is good for my use case I prefer to plug my own HDMI cable and it is USB 3.1 compatible, good to make my s9 plus to have big screen TV output
option #3 CHOETECH USB Type C to HDMI Adapter([email protected]) seems be an awesome product for business professionals. Will make life so much easier in meetings and will help reduce wire clutter to give clean and professional outlook to meeting rooms.
Option 2.
Compact, all in one. No need for dongles and works with my Lenova laptop, S9+ and portable beamer!
Great!

#3 NO wire clutter, YES!
# 4, after some consideration. I almost went with # 3 but I think the ability to adapt to traditional HDMI full size connector is an strong advantage. This helps particularly when connecting to large HD displays or when traveling for an easy connection in a hotel room or a friends house. I particularly like the idea of a short cable rather than a fixed dongle adapter since the later can often apply physical pressure on the port and may result in device being damaged. Nice job!
