Started acting funny - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so last Sunday the phone started acting funny:
Preface:
-Dropped it a few times ~3ft in a case, no apparent damage
-CM 10.1.3 RC2 (I had been running this for awhile)
-Stock Kernel
-No non-mainstream apps running (all from the google play store), nor apps that mess with performance/function.
-No tweaks or other things.
Issue:
-Sunday:
-Last Sunday my phone would randomly shut down and get really hot, reboot all that jazz
-WAs working perfectly fine before, I didn't install any new apps or tweak anything.
-Wipe, reinstall 10.3.1, reinstall gapps (this was already on internal SD)
-Problem persists, ok I'll get a different rom
-Plug in USB, device not recognized, charges but, cannot recognize the device (not appearing in Device Manager either).
-Reinstall LG drivers... nope still not helping.
-Use Airdroid, wipe and install P.Android 3.99RC2
-USB still not working, otherwise seems stable, charging.
-Monday:
-On my way to job interview, running google maps, and google music.
-3/4 of the way there phone gets hot and maps locks up.. reboot.
-Will not start up sometimes
-When it does startup, it will lock up in maps and reboot, or just reboot before I get to maps (like when i drop the menu down)
-Manage to get to interview by having maps stay up for more than a few seconds. Turn off phone.
-On the way home the phone will not turn on, and doesn't want to charge for long. (red light goes off after a little bit)
-When it does turn on it gets stuck on the PA boot screen (not freeze up but just stays there) and gets hot.
-Turn off phone.
-Buy a Note III
-Try to charge N4 wirelessly... doesnt work all the time, the pad makes the noise but the phone does not light up and charge (moving it around doesn't help)
-Give up for awhile
-Last night
-I put the N4 on the wall charger and the red light turns on ... great it's charging
-This morning:
-Take it off the charger (charging light is off) and it is charged to 54%... wtf
-Turn it on... boots.
-Find out I have 3 weeks of warranty left (Nov 11th) call Google.
-Phone is working fine (no USB still, on my work computer this time)
-Listen to the blatant ripoff that is the warranty (more on this later)
-20min later phone is at 19% (battery stats says that the main draw is the screen: 39%)
Ok so that's the story so far. I have about 3 weeks to make a decision on the RMA but the warranty service is such that if your device is not faulty when they receive it, they will not only charge you for the device they sent you but they will not give you back your old one, in other words you basically sold your phone to Google for $0 and you bought a new one at full markup. This makes little sense to me as if I'm paying for a new phone, I want my old one back. Compounding this, a new NExus should be released in a few weeks, if I am gonna pay full retail i might as well get the new one, but I digress. I am going to put it back to 100% stock and locked, and see what happens there, but I am wondering:
-if anyone has had similar issues with this phone?
-If I chose not to chance sending it in, how hard is it to change the battery (I've done a iphone 3GS before)?
-What can come loose in there?
Thanks! :good:

It is fairly easy to change the battery, I had to change mine my self because I already replaced the screen my self, and Google doesn't accept a phone if you took it apart. The problem here is that I am not sure if its your battery that has the problem. Mine was expanded, so the glass back was somewhat bent and not flat. Do you have that problem? You might have a problem with the USB or the battery. When I had my battery problem my phone was charged at 100% and when unplugged it would die at about 80% and then when I plugged it back in I would get 30%. Also I almost never got a red light of death except for once and it wasn't due to the problem. I would say you should try doing an RMA, but first try factory images
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

Yeah seems like the usb port and maybe the battery as well got shake because of the drops.
You can open the back cover, look visually at the battery to make sure its not inflated, also disconnect the battery's flex cable and reconnect... See if nothing broke at the usb port (on its board).

Sounds like battery might be the culprit.. Try the suggestions above^^^

let see...dropped it a few times ~3ft in a case ||

ok here is the problem.
4 nights ago i forgot to plug in my hd2 while android was running and the battery died.
the next morning i went to turn it on and the screen no longer turns on but the phone does boot. the battery doesnt charge, status light doesnt either, end key doesnt work, when i answer calls no noise can be heard or made.
any hope?
Im guessing you cant run bootloader?
Maybe this is a warrenty jobby
If you know someone with another HD2, Try swapping the battery.

Hi Chris,
Please eleborate/clarify your OP, because I don't think anyone gets this... At least i don't! You say the screen doesn't turn on but the phone boots?! How do you figure that? Your device is actually on because you can receive/answer calls!?! :S
Sounds like your device has just BSOD (Black Screen of Death) which is discussed quite a lot here. Just press reset button or pull the battery (please tell me you have tried that before...).
If your device IS NOT powered on, please try this:
Does the device vibrate shortly when pressing the End-button? If so you should leave it connected to the charger for longer. If battery has drained too much it takes a while for the device to allow it to power itself up (prevention of overdrainage, which Lithium-batteries don't like very much).
Do you charge through USB, or with the supplied charger? I've had this before trying to charge it with a (different brand) microUSB charger. Turned out most chargers only give out 500mAh, whilst my normal charger (and car-charger) give out 1000mAh i believe. That might help.
You can order a cheap replacement battery from China (i got mine with dockingstation), which is already charged about 60% (for storage purposes).
BTW if your problem is fixed, please add the prefix [FIXED] or [SOLVED] to your topics title.

i have restarted many times.
i use the wall charger.
but why would the phone boot but not turn on the screen or have the mic work?
remove your sd card and the battery. you may have to hit the rest button on the back after you plug the battery back in as well, but as long as you have the sd card out it should come back on. try plugging the phone into a charger and then remove the battery as well sometimes it'll wake it up so to speak. it's just a matter of playing with it. mine did the exact same thing and i freaked out for a little bit.
now if after all this it doesn't work and you've played with it for a while then yeah, best of luck to you =\. but whatever you do in playing with the battery and the charger, keep the sd card out until you can boot into winmo.
EDIT: never mind, i thought the phone wasn't booting. i misunderstood, but i went back and reread the original post. try reflashing your rom if you're in winmo and experiencing those issues. or take the sd card out and reboot.
i would suggest making an backup, as your phone turns on you should be able to estaplish a remote-connection with some (3rd-party-)software and do a hardreset.
if this wont work i would recommend setting it back to factory default (revert hspl if you have one and install stock rom) and send it in for warranty.
seems to be some major problem...
All this steps should be possible without screen turning on (working touchscreen may be needed for backup, but flashing doent need screen input)
if drive-mode is default for your usb connection and holding you from flashing you can do a hardreset and afterwards active sync will be default again and you can establish an active sync connection and flash
check if any of the pins that contact the battery are bended or broken, try to avoid removing the battery when you have to reset your hd2 because the pins are fragile
similar thing happened to me just last night!
I tried the jmz dual boot last night and I was nearly out of battery. I didnt look at any instructions I just installed it and restarted the phone to check out the new toy. it finally got done loading I chose android right away and I was walking towards the bedroom. when I went to see if android had fully booted and plug in the phone I had nothing! It was off. I decided that the battery must have died so I tried to turn it on and all that happened was the tmobile flash screen came up for a second and then it went right off, I got so desperate that I was going to do a hard reset but that wouldnt even work! the boot loader screen would just shut right off. I was suggested to try another battery we had at the house and bang it fired right up I took a wiff of my other battery and I dont know what happened but I think I let the magic smoke out cuz it is fried!

hello friend...i have a problem similar to this. basically when my phone is in android which i use alot if it dies in android, when i reboot it it will turn on for about a second to see my splash screen then turn itself off (the battery is obviously flat). so i plug my charger in and it stays on now but doesnt indicate charging....i boot it into windows mobile and the batt just stays at 0% but its still working. however once i unplug it it will die.....its like the battery is not in the phone. luckily i have two batteries and a dock which charges batteries, so i replaced the battery and everything works fine. once the battery that died in android was fully charged i tried it again and it was fine.................im guesing the moral to this story is dont let your phone die in android mode
I do notice my HD2 runs hotter while in android than while it runs in Windows.
I am not sure if that's an issue to this, which is why I never mentioned about it being hotter. Although my HD2 is noticeable hotter, it never gets to a point that I think I should unplug the USB due to overheating concern...
Just a few inputs from passed experience
I use TMOUS Stock 2.13.531.1 WWE ROM
2.12.50.2_2 radio (not stock)
k going to tmobile today to see if they have any extra batteries i can try.
then ill update
i went to tmobile. and while i was there i noticed the screen was turning on but very dim without backlight (barely noticable). but the rep helping me did not notice and i let it stay that way because tmobile is sending me a new refurbished phone as long as i send the old one (and the rep was totally cool he uses xda also and said they wont check my software and if they do they wont ask for the phone back). he also let me get insurance in case this happens again, instead i will just say its lost. so i basically killed 2 birds with one stone

[Q] Not recognized by computer, Red dot of death

Ok so:
Had CM 10.2 nothing else crazy (unlocked/rooted)
One day wifi started acting up (kept dropping) and USB started not being recognized.
Decided that maybe software might be acting up, switched to PA 3.99RC2: FUll Wipe, reinstall
Next day riding out to a meeting phone starts rebooting randomly while running Google maps and music
Keeps locking up and rebooting
Getting really hot
Turn phone off, go to meeting
Phone will not turn back on (solid red dot by usb)
Go home
Recovery no go, phone will not charge on wall or USB charging at all.
Red dot comes on when plugged into wall then turns off after about 30min, plugging/unplugging turns the solid red dot on again.
Put on wireless charger, for an hour
Phone boots up, at 60% charge
USB only charges phone does not send any kind of signal that it is there, no windows sound, nothing in device manager
No charging light at all, but the icon shows as charging.
Have airdroid installed, might try stock google, but it looks like something hardware related.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
Since I don't have ADB working how do I return to stock? (I presume unpackage the distro, airdroid them over, and then install individually?)
I called Google and they say that if they deem that the phone works, not only will they keep the phone I sent them, but they will also charge me for another nexus 4, this is kinda BS and wiht the Nexus 5 around the corner it seems even more BS.
Not sure what to do, as I have about another 1.5 weeks of warranty left. The USB seems jacked up but I am not sure if there are other diagnostics to confirm.

Thanks for the tip, I was just wondering how this sort of malfunction happens. I never really used the USB port after I got wireless charging, so maybe some light dropping? I dunno

[Q] My Nexus 4 won't charge or power on and I'm looking for options

So, a bit of backstory first ( Feel free to skip this part and read it after my TLDR and QUESTION portion for reference)
One day a few months ago (the day that my nexus 5 arrived early, luckily) I was working on flashing a new ROM to my nexus 4, and something went horribly awry. I got error messages saying that something could not be accessed or mounted or something (Sorry, the details are hazy , but it amounted to what seemed like an inability to access the files or locations it needed to access to flash the ROM)
My phone would not , no matter what I attemped , flash a ROM or revert to stock correctly. (I tried a bunch of different ways of pushing files manually to the phone, flashing stock images, etc.) .
Now here's where things get weird. I have NO idea if these two issues are related, I just assume they are. All of a sudden one day (I could never boot past recovery , so I hadn't been paying attention to battery level, considering the phone was plugged into my computer most of the time during those couple days) the phone just shut off.
I seemed to be able to get it to charge, but it never really lasted very long and would unexpectedly turn off again while I was trying to fix it.
That was a few months ago. Yesterday I opened the phone up for the first time, Unplugged the battery, checked connections and everything for possible water or other damage. Even gave the USB circuit board an alcohol bath for good measure. Put the phone back together, and tried plugging it into my computer and what happened was that the computer made a sound like it recognized a device. On the phone itself, a red light came on for a couple of seconds and turned off.
It still won't charge or boot into recovery/bootloader. Doesn't really give any indication that it IS charging, and every time I try turning it on, all I get is that red light that comes on for a couple seconds and turns off.
TDLR: Nexus 4 is messed up at the software level, and on top of that, won't charge or turn on.
QUESTION: Assuming I can't figure out a way to actually fix it, would it be a logical move to purchase a nexus 4 with a broken screen on ebay and pull all the internal components (specifically the main circuit board and battery probably) and put them into my current nexus 4's body?
I have no idea how much it'd cost me to have mine fixed, so I'm kind of just looking for a cheap way to end up with a working nexus 4.
In my opinion if it doesn't boot at all or lasts really little, you should check the battery. Unplug the phone from computer, Unplug your battery and let it off for a couple of minutes. In the mid time just press the in/off button for a few time and few seconds each time, so the components discharge. Replug your battery and let it charge for a couple of hours, not on computer but on the wall socket.
If after that it boot to bootloader the flash stock image.
If not see if you can get a new battery. Sometimes batteries discharge so much from being unused that they won't recharge without help ( need to have Power Supply unit).

Note 3 not turning on. Sudden death? Hardware problem?

Let me start from the begining.
So the other day I plugged my phone into USB in order to charge it (I had to keep it close to me hence why I didn't plug it into the wall charger). The phone was charging, showing up as a media device on the lappy, etc. I was doing stuff on the computer then I heard it vibrate so I went to see what it was. The blue notification light was on (facebook notification most likely) and when I pressed the Menu button the screen didn't come on. I also tried the Power button but same thing. So I decided to restart the phone. Since then, it hasn't turned back on.
I tested the battery in another device and it's working perfectly fine. Neither recovery nor download mode work. I tried to do some of the tests people recommended for sudden death, like plugging it into usb and leaving it for a while, trying to kick start it (putting battery in while holding the recovery buttons) - you name it, i've done it. I even went to the lengths of taking off the back cover to see if theres any crap that got in there, maybe a loose connector, anything burnt - nothing. Unfortunately, I don't have a multimeter to see if there is a charge running through the board. Looks like sudden death to me, the only thing is - I rooted the phone on the 1st day I got it and I don't live in the country where I bought the phone so sending it over for warranty repairs would be a pain in the ass. What can I do? I would greatly appreciate your help, if you manage to help me fix my baby, I will ENSURE to send you a donation for a nice, big, cold beer (or maybe a few).
Looking forward to any answers! I really need my phone, I use it for work.
It seems like a hardware issue... you need to take it to a local store to scan it's hardware.... maybe something gone wrong while charging which made something be destroyed inside it..... hope its not the motherboard.....
it happens sometimes, when charging current fluctuate, it destroys the charging circuit and in result it damage the whole current circuit, local repair shop can solve the issue.

Samsung S4 VE I9515 wont turn on

Hello,
So let me give you a brief so you'd know everything - a few days ago, I'm gonna call it day 1, I walked under light rain with the phone in my pocket, it worked until the night of
Day 2 - started to lag a bit, it was like I was running some heavy apps and like the ram was insufficient. Restarted the phone, everything seemed normal.
Day 3 - Phone went off while was browsing. So I have to make a note here. I was running cm13 with android m and twrp 2..something and there were occasional reboots by itself rarely prior to Day 1. Also, I was using a supercharger (or whatever it is called, it is a charger that charges faster) for about a month.
So when the phone went off while I was browsing, it started by itself and stuck on the android loading. I restarted, cleared dalvik and regular cache - still stuck on boot. Flashed many times, changed the recovery to twrp, and still was stuck on rebooting and occasionally it didn't turn on. There were random occurrences of errors on flashing roms, which never happened before (for example, "cant mount system or data"). Within the time passing by, the phone started not to turn on when I tried to. By this time rarely got stuck on the first boot screen saying with the text "Samsung S4". Yesterday, Day 4, the phone never turned on, except one time. I don't remember doing anything special. I just pressed and held the power button and it turned on, but went off shortly after the android boot animation appeared.
Also there was times on Day 3, when I was trying to boot into the system, it got stuck on the android booting animation.
On and prior to Day 3, while I was charging, whenever it is on or off - I had the indicator light for charging. Now when I plug it in to charge - nothing happens.
To skip any unnecessary questions, I will make a short QA.
Q: Did you tried to boot into recovery/bootloader?
A: yes, nothing happens
Q: Any sign of life on adb while connected to a pc??
A: no
Q: Is battery dead?
A: I don't think so, but actually I'm not that sure. When I connect a separate led light to it, the led lights up Whatever, if it was a faulty battery when I plug the phone on the charger, it should've worked fine.
Q: Why don't you just buy a new phone?
A: I was planning to buy a new one, but after just 4 months when I have to renew my contract. I don't want to buy a phone off contract.
Q: Are you stupid, if you can't manage to fix it by yourself, why don't you give it to a repair?
A: I truly believe that the professionalism of repairers doesn't exist in my country via old experiences with them.
So in the worst scenario I will loose time by trying to fixing it and for 4 months I will use my old android phone.
In the best scenario, my almost 2 years old phone will revive.
Also, I have a multimeter - I can check the electricity. Just tell me what to check.
Thanks.

Probabily the rain damaged a part of your hardware. Did you solve?
If the battery is dead, the phone won't work.
The battery needs to have at least a bit of charge in order for the device to work, even if it is plugged in.
If the battery can't hold the charge, and the device uses more power than it gets, it turns off. I speak from experience.
These devices don't seem to work without a battery. Power goes to the battery, and the phone takes the power from there. Power doesn't go straight to the phone.
Anyway, I don't think a bit of light rain hurts the devices, especially if it was in your pocket. I walked through rain with my device in the pocket many times and no problem.
It looks to me that the hardware is failing. I don't believe that a faulty battery can cause a bootloop. I also don't believe that the power button causes a bootloop.
What I suggest would be:
1) Try going back to stock ROM.
2) Maybe try to get an S4 with a broken screen and switch the motherboards.
