[Q] Rooted and OTA Furute Updates W/G2 - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My VZW G2 is Rooted. I am not using anything fancy for changing ROMS, I just Root so I can use a few programs that need Root like Titanium Back up.
Does Rooting the phone stop any future OTA updates?
Thank you

No. Simply rooting will not stop OTAs, I'm willing to bet the next one will break root though.

[Q] Sprint APK's and Odex's, Please

Hey all,
I am trying to unroot my phone via the OTA update.
I deleted some .apk and .odex from the system/app since I did not want them.
Anyone know where I can find these again? Link?
Tried searching in the Dev section but couldn't find it...
Thanks again all!
Same here I just rooted with unrevoked 3.3 and read somewhere that you could brick your phone if you accept ota updates after deleting stock app's is this true? I know ppl say to wait for a rom but gingerbread ota will be to tempting..can you just reinstall those apps or is .odex necessary?

No that's not true. Just don't accept ota updates, there's always a rooted update you can flash so you don't lose root. And a rooted 2.3 update will be the same as a ota update, just easier for you. And if you're really concerned about those Sprint apps you can always run the official ruu

future ota updates on rooted but stock rom

Hi guys, I am a new member and know nothing about rooting phone. I just got my mt4g and the bloatapps are very annoying. I'm planning to follow rooting procedure on youtube and apply permanent root. I never root a phone before. Just one question: after rooted, will the phone still able to receive ota updates from tmobile and run normally? I am not going to flash any rom. I am keeping the stock rom but only remove stuff like yahoo, games, apppack, and some other crap that I am absolutely sure not needed on the phone. Thanks in advance guys.

Rooted phones may still receive updates via T-Mobile. However if you should install those updates your phone will get messed up. You need to call T-mobile and ask them to push the most current update to your phone, install it. Then root it. And from that point forward do not any install any update.

By messed up do you mean you would lose root(su) and s=off correct?

[Q] general help and understanding

I will soon be getting a samsung galaxy g4 32gb phone from att. I want to know the best way to root it and remove the bloatware mainly att stuff, without bricking or messing up the phone. I love the ability to root i did with my on sony xperia play. Unfornately the last phone i had a lg optimus g crash and burn after rooting and trying to remove bloatware. So I want to make sure I have no problems. I heard it was easy and simple to do with a galaxy line but i just don't want to mess it up i can afford buying new phones.
thanks

Root alone doesn't block the OTA. In fact, going from MF3 to MK2, you could first root with jortex's method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577) and enable survival mode. Then after the OTA, you will still have root.

If you're using supersu there is a full unroot method in the apps settings. Look there.

I rooted that phone with kingo root through the computer. Bloatware on the I removed bloatware with ROM toolbox pro however when trying to do ota update it looked for the bloatware and when it didn't find it ota failed. (looked that up in the failed log - hung on not finding chaton) flashed mk2 rom then only froze the bloatware. have to see if the next update will fail I don't think it will though because when I only froze bloatware on mf3 I did get the mj9 ota update successfully

How to preserve root from 4.1.2 to kit kat 4.4

Hello, I was wondering for those who kept root going from 4.1.2 to kitkat 4.4, how did you do it? My phone is currently locked but rooted and I just downloaded the OTA kit kat update but haven't installed it yet. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
No current method so don't upgrade if root is essential. Only unlocked bootloaders can get root back.

We haven't seen anybody maintain root on a locked device across the OTA yet.

what about on a device that is unlocked?
voodoo?
On an unlocked device you can just flash SuperSU in recovery...
And Voodoo won't work with a KitKat OTA.
how do you flash if root was lost when updated..im unlocked and had twrp but heard that is no longer working..and what is stranger is that developers option in settings s not there

First off, in regards to TWRP, there is a newer version of CWM recovery that works with KK. Use that.
Second, the developer options have been hidden, but you have to pay me to get the info.
JUST KIDDING!
Here is what you do:
Go to settings.
Click on "About Phone"
Scroll down and then start mashing on "Build Number". It will inform you that you have so many presses before going to developer mode.
After that, it will give you a toast saying developer mode has been activated. You're done!
If someone could kindly put together a walk thru on
How to go from stock, rooted, and unlocked to kit Kat w/root
That would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I am in the same boat, rooted on stock ROM. I don't want to lose root, but my phone keep popping up the update installer request. My phone has kept me so happy for so long that I have not kept up with the forums. I just haven't had any problems, and I'd like to keep it that way. So, is there no root for 4.2.2 yet? Or there just isn't a way to preserve it across the OTA? Should I go back to stock unrooted, update and re-root? I've been reading around the forums and I am just not seeing a whole lot of info about this yet.

this has been discussed many times.
if you have a LOCKED phone, there is NO way to have or preserve root going to KK
if you have a UNLOCKED phone, update to KK, flash the KK cwm, flash su zip in cwm, profit!
those are the only 2 options PERIOD.

Some people say it's better to rename System > etc>security > otacerts.zip. Equal amount of people say to freeze updater. I'll follow you and freeze updater for now.
I'm itching to update to KK, and I can almost part with a rooted phone since I am running stock ROM anyway. But life without Titanium Backup just doesn't seem like a life at all.
Thanks again for the tips.
Speaking of freezing the update app, I have been doing that since before the last update so I'm currently running 4.1.2 9.16.6.XT926 does anyone know if it will cause me any trouble skipping an OTA?
Thanks.

you should unlock the bootloader first if you havent already. after you update you will no longer be able to ever.
as for the update, if you flash it with rsd there shouldnt be any issue that im aware of. if you unfreeze the updater and take the actual ota(s), it will not skip any, it will pull the next in line each time until you get to the most current.
however, you will still need to use rsd before taking or sideloading the KK ota or root will cause it to fail.

Thanks for the help but I don't have a lot of knowledge about rooting. If I don't care about keeping root can I just take the OTAs or are you saying they will they fail if I don't first unlock the boot loader?
"after you update you will no longer be able to ever" What will I not be able to update again? The bootloader?
Thanks.

He's saying you could probably find someone who would be willing to pay you handsomely to trade phones.
Once you update your phone, the bootloader can't be unlocked....as far as we know, ever again. If you don't care, which it sounds like you don't, go ahead and update your phone.

most people who dont unlock the bootloader when they had the chance regret not doing it. its not a problem if you dont want to, i was just giving you a heads up more or less.
as for the updates,(this has nothing to do with the bootloader) im pretty sure the first 2 will install fine but im positive the 3rd, KK, will fail because you had root before.
so if you want to go to KK, you really have no other option but to use rsd first to return your phone to stock.

Thanks bweN diorD and gadsden,
I appreciate the help. I only use my root access for killing music apps and I have some bloatware frozen. So personally I think I'll go ahead and update to KK since the benefits should outweigh the loss of root access for me. Should I do a factory reset first or should I be good to go taking the OTA?
Thanks again I'm always hesitant to do things to my phone because I don't have the knowledge to fix it or the money to replace it.

Again thanks, I guess I'll have to look into finding out how to use rsd and go back to stock.

Noob root question. If i get an OTA can i just flash SuperSU once im already rooted?

Sorry for the confusing title, I'm coming from a Nexus 6 that was one of the easier phones to root and customize. So far I'm on month 3 with my V20 and haven't rooted it yet. If I do and receive a OTA I will obviously lose my root, but once I have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery installed, can I just reflash SuperSU to reroot?
Thanks.
OTAs on this device overwrite the bootloader and recovery. you WILL lose root. and all methods to get it back.

Rooting isn't pointless. You still have access to all the exclusive root features you wouldn't normally have of course. Why would you want to take an OTA anyways unless you have some issue with your phone (just curious)? You could just wait for someone to post TWRP flashable updates for your variant of the V20 so that you can keep root access while still updating.

I'm waiting on 7.1 and fear I will finally root and it will come along in a OTA and I will not be able to root again until someone comes up with a new form of root.
I could be way off though, like I said, noob question, I came from a Nexus 6 where root and flashing custom ROMs was a cake walk for a guy like me.

all you need is someone who can provide updated stock roms like i do on the ls997 On the sprint model we have the latest OTA applied
Yeah but as you know development on the H990ds isn't exactly buzzing.
Neither are the other devices anymore
I guess. Surprises me as the V20 is a fantastic device.
But LG didn't make anything easy for you devs.
