I think the phone is designed to prefer LTE. It drops to HSPA+ in the absence of LTE.

Pretty sure thats not true, atleast for tmobile version. Mine drop to hspa+ even though LTE have 2 bar. Quiet annoying.
T-Mobile LTE isn't widespread. I can be in one spot with lte then cross the street and be on hspa. I think this phone is set to go with what's stronger.

Can the vibrant pick up the AT&T 850 MHz 3G network? Is there any way to turn on this feature?

Yes. The 1900mhz I believe as well. Idk what you search but Google "Vibrant on at&t 3G"

Use SGS Tools. Select secret codes. Scroll down to band selection and it will give you all the options.

I can get 3G in other areas, but not here, which leads me to believe it's just a 850 MHz band.
I can take out the SIM and put it in an iPhone and it picks up 3G just fine, whereas the vibrant is stuck on edge. It's frustrating to keep having to reboot the phone to pop out the SIM

Its got to be unlocked doesn't it to work on att 3g network don't it?
Here we go again...
Here we go again. If you are referring to the T-Mobile USA Vibrant, it does not have support for 850Mhz UMTS bands. Period. The FCC says so. That is pretty definitive as far as I am concerned. It does not matter what some piece of software shows you. The hardware is not capable as it sits in the T-Mobile USA Vibrant. Search the FCC database for the Vibrant. GSM 850Mhz ≠ UMTS 850Mhz.
Pretty sure it's just 1900MHz. The FCC documents would have included the 850MHz band if it was really there.
Edit: Lol, yeah what he said.

Thanks for clearing it up now comes the dilemma of deciding whether to use the vibrant or an iPhone that uses the 3G speeds...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Tmobile Vibrant does have capability to operate on ATT 3G network.
I could get it working with iphone sim card.
Specification also includes ATT frequencies.
Att is using two frequencies for 3G.
If it don't run on 3g then why does my vibrant have a 3g data icon and is blazing fast on it?

It runs on 3G in areas where AT&T uses 1900MHz for 3G. It runs on Edge in areas where AT&T only uses 850MHz for 3G.

Precisely.
The Vibrant does not have 850mhz 3g support. Only AWS(1700)/PCS(1900)/IMT(2100) 3g support.
Wow...just wow. Seriously, the FCC does not generally lie about things like this. And no, I don't think it is a big conspiracy in this case...lol

I'm not sure what this is about. Maybe it's just wishful thinking run amok...seems like most of these people either want to switch to AT&T or bought the phone intending to use it on AT&T, have since found out that it won't work in their area, and are refusing to ultimately admit to themselves that it won't work.
People like to think to themselves, "Well, maybe the FCC screwed up and I DO have a pentaband (or quadband?) 3G phone." The slightest bit of uncertainty encourages such thoughts...there are threads with jokers enabling the fake 850MHz menu selection and exclaiming, "OMG, I have AT&T 3G on 850MHz" when they already had it on 1900MHz. People who bother googling the question ahead of time will no doubt find some older, confusing threads.(Albeit they will hopefully find more and more threads with people like us saying "No, it's not in the FCC docs," etc.)
We should have a sticky or something about this lol.
Yes, I googled it and found conflicting reports which is why I came here to clear it up.
Thanks again

I am very surprised. I have to use GPRS at work because I don't get any 3G signal and its not fast at all
GPRS is not EDGE. For all intents and purposes, they might as well be since they're both sloooooooow. EDGE is defined as 2.5 G which is a marketing ploy to differentiate molasses in Miami (EDGE) and molasses in Alaska (GPRS).
I tried to listen to 48 kbps radio stream and it was not fast enough.. had to switch to 3g
How do you force GPRS? I know you can force 3G and edge.

Get an iPhone 2G. Just kidding. I know that Windows Mobile, webOS and the Androids I've had all have a "network selection" tab in cellular settings. Uncheck "automatic network selection" and wait for the phone to show you options. Usually you'll get an operator's 2G or 3G option and you select which one you want. Windows Phone (post-Mango) has an actual 3G toggle. Other than battery saving I can't understand why you'd want 2G. Data consumption remains the same, just slower. If you're looking to put your browser on a diet, just install Opera Mini and enjoy compressed data and faster browsing speeds.
I have the note II. Only 3G and edge and lte I can't do GPRS.

I agree but the 3G/4G terminology is a bit screwed. The current "3G" release is 100x faster then the original 3G release. Yet the current 4G release is only 2.5x faster then the current 3G release.
Which is why Android refers to it as H. It should probably stay that way.
But I get 22Mbps on my N4 on DC-HSPA, which isn't as high as you, but I know how you feel. But I live on a continent that's completely GSM/HSPA/LTE, so I never really had the CDMA 3G problem.
Is there anyway to enable 3G/wcdma only after rebooting??

Hi, I hope you're well.
Please allow me to ask my stupid question of the day.
I am a T-Mobile post-paid customer on contract, and I am using a LG Nexus 4. T-Mobile will likely start having LTE soon, so I was wondering if that will affect the Nexus 4 in any way, positively or negatively (probably not negatively, but as I stated, this is a stupid question).
Thanks!
Vic
probably not. lte capabilities were disabled in the .48 baseband which came with the 4.2.2 update.
Hard to say, as the Nexus 4 does not "officially" have LTE. Google disabled the limited LTE connectivity in the 4.2.2 update as the N4 was not approved by the FCC for LTE.
Unless Google refiles, I wouldn't expect any official LTE updates.
But, that doesn't mean you can't try out the older radios (that still have LTE) as some people have had success using them (no sensor issues or voice/sound issues).
Thanks for the replies!
I'm aware of the LTE capabilities being disabled by Google. Even if I use the older radios, will the LTE speed be significantly faster than the default HSPA+ speeds I've been experiencing?
Thanks!
Vic

yes..
My N4 is being returned, but I did get 16mbit down yesterday on HSPA+, which is amazing to me considering my home caps out at like 12 I think. Frankly, considering the marginal real-world gain you would see on LTE, I think the phone is probably better off not using that LTE antenna.

42 is the theoretical throughput, once you account for real world inefficiencies and data reserved for network services, 22 is a fantastic result.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
It really depends your area, on average lte will be faster especially upload. In most major cities LTE will probably smoke HSPA. The most I ever hit with HSPA was 18down 2up and lte was 56down 35 up in Toronto.
HSPA is no slouch though, just the upload is rough. If you upload a lot LTE is a must.

LTE pings are usually low. so stuff pops up faster on the phone compared to hspa+. You would not see much difference when downloading something because the down speeds aren't too different. As far as picture uploads are concerned, they will happen much faster w/ LTE.

Noticed when i use the app to set for LTE only that phone calls dont come thru. Calls goes straight to voice mail. Anybody else?
Quick bump... I'm having same issue as OP and the program doesn't work for me either.
A little update... I took my phone to verizon to swap out for a new phone because of constant 4g drops to 3g and 1x, Rep advised he had seen my problem fixed with a new sim card before. I hesitantly accepted to try it not thinking it would fix my problem but considered oh well if it does I wont have to setup a new phone so whats the worse that could happen. 5 days later im happy to report my 4g drops have been non existant. My 4g is as reliable as it was on my note 2.
Mine drops out on me on train ride where Verizon says it's supposed to have 4g. I'm not sure if it's supposed to since I never had Verizon until this phone release.
Is there an equivalent to At&t's Mark the Spot app that reports to Verizon dead zones and such?
