my first nexus s had darker whites than the display model at the store. I would recommend comparing yours with the store display or another persons nexus s, I think this is the best way, since we cant physically see how your phone screen looks. good luck
Are you referring to the gray section where your service provider is listed? Or the very dark area where the notifications are listed?
If I stare I can see some lines in the gray area.
I do see a slight grid pattern in the power control widget.
No I'm talking about grey section where your messages show up

I don't have a Nexus S, but I have a Galaxy S i9000M which has a similar (if not exactly the same) screen. If I bring up a screen that is a solid colour, I do notice some imperfections like you describe. They are hardly noticeable though.
Weird. My nexus doesn't have that and I would know, I modded my nexus 1 to be pretty much like gingerbread 6 months back, massive burn in.

actually no.... mine doesn't have any lines or defects.
the only lines are the horizontal ones separating the notifications.
I think I know what you mean. My N1 on certain backgrounds has very faint grey lines. Not always visible, even on white web pages

Why would that cause burn in more than anything else?
I don't know but I don't want it to get worse over time

Yes, I can see it. I can see it on any AMOLED/SAMOLED phone I've ever come in contact with. It's the nature of AMOLED screens unlike most LCD screens. With AMOLED, each pixel is individually powered, and it's impossible to have each pixel (or subpixel) be identical, which leads to slight differences in output and color reproduction. An LCD screen is backlight by either florescent tubes or recently, LEDs, which produce an even backlight (usually) where the colors are controlled by filtering each pixel, rather than having to illuminate each pixel.
Anyway, I only really notice it when the brightness is at the minimum and it's very dark in the place I'm using my phone. If I crank up the brightness or if I'm in a well lit area, I don't notice it at all really. Although if it's VERY obvious, you might have a screen that's significantly lower quality than average... it happens, bad QC or something, exchange it.
Oh, and if you stare at a plasma TV long enough you'll notice the same thing... similar technology, each pixel illuminated individually.
Hi People,
I have recently got Galaxy S2 and i was comparing it with my older Galaxy S(I-9000)
I was playing same video file in both devices with 0% & 100% brightness.
In my view, Galaxy S was more brighter and natural looking. Where as Galaxy S2 was king of dull. I mean say at 0% brightness, galaxy S was better and same with both the devices were on 100% brightness.
Technically Galaxy S2 screen is better.
Experts - Can anyone of you feel this way? or it is just my observation.
I have also kept the live wall paper "Spring Zen Free" that also was showing better on my galaxy S.
Even in setting screen, white text on black background was looking better in Galaxy S.
Any one has any idea why it is happening like it?
Plz plz comment.
Regards,
Anoop.
My SGS2 better than my SGS1 .

You’ve probably read a little on other reviews about the video playback, it’s uniformly been reported as excellent. It is. In fact I would go so far as to say its peerless in the mobile phone world, and by a large margin (its nearest competitor being original Galaxy S as it happens,

Hello JJE,
Thanks for your quick reply. But could you please tell me that, at 0% brighness of both devices, Galaxy S2 is dull or it is same clear and crisp as Galaxy S?
As i feel it very much that, at 0%, Galaxy S is still brighter than S2.
Is it because they want to increase the battery life?
Kindly revert with your expert comments..
Regards,
Anoop.
Sorry cannot test now sold my SGS1 .

Hi JJE,
One last question on Galaxy S2. on the bottom tray of home screen of Galaxy S2, you will see "Phone" button which is has got a phone icon with Green background.
Do you see some sun rays like texture (diagonal small lines covering green portion) in the green icon? I just want to make sure that, I too have similar texture for that phone button and it is not something defect in the screen. (you might have to look closely)
Similar structure can be seen in "Applications" icon/button on home screen (which is blue in color)
Kindly let me know.
Regards,
Anoop.
Did you turn the screen power option off? even at 100% brightness, it's not actually at 100% brightness until you turn it off. Also go into the background effect to change the color temp
Play with these settings, it alters the display greatly...
Background effect: Dynamic, Standard, Movie?
Auto adjust screen power: Checked? Unchecked?
Browser brightness: Auto off? Auto on?
Display brightness: Auto off? Auto on?
I have to agree, s 2 is duller than my s (i now have both), maybe a power save feature that you can't turn off ? I've also noticed the yellow tint on s 2, compared to a blue tint on the s, and this can vary depending on what background effect you have selected ! This leads me to believe the colour temp could me changed in software. My itouch has a pinky looking tint compared to either galaxy phone.

Which background setting are you using? Power save feature can be turned off by unticking.
I've sold my sgs too. However there was a week when I had both and I can tell you for certain that the sgsII screen is more natural t in colour then sgs's. Having them both side by side the sgs just looks b l u e. Like really blue.
SgsII screen is the best mobile screen I've used

Yes. Icons look just the way you described. It's normal, it's not a display problem.
I thought my N4 had horrible blacks until I realized that Android was using dark grays instead of blacks throughout the menu system. It makes the screen really hazy.
Not a fan.
Is there any way to correct this short of using a custom launcher?

Use a app that changes the colors. Of course this won't fix it either, it's just the way IPS screen is, AMOLED screens produce the best blacks.
Alternatively, you can download a inverted ROM that has a black background instead of dark gray / bluish.
I think the ROM you're looking for is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028025

Just got a Nexus 4, hate the yellow tint and washed out display. Is there a way to calibrate the screen and adjust the colours? Also, is it possible to make the screen brightness brighter? I have it set to max and it still looks dim. Lastly, is there a chart that shows recommended values to get vibrant rich looking colours?
Thanks.

You could use one of the many kernels out there, like franco, that permits color control. Well, you'll have to pay for an app(like franco kernel app) , but it's worth it.

Here you'll find a public spreadsheet and a list of color control apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38619101
Custom kernel is required.

Google releases November security patch that includes new display color modes (Boosted, Natural, Saturated) for the Pixel 2 XL to help with the screen color saturation issues/problems. Update includes fixes for screen burn-in and the ear piece clicking noises. Love that Google added this options, in that way people that want accurate colors can use the "Natural" mode, those custom to Samsung's "saturated" (candy) colors, can now pick "Saturated" mode. All about having choices.

Just got the update, loving it !
Colors are much much better . To my eyes at least.
Do you guys experiencing any differences regarding the blue shift after the update?

That's caused by the polarized layer afaik, not sure how saturation would change that
I couldn't really notice a difference... Will see when I get the phone and update is applied.
But I was happy with the colours when I looked at it in the shops..
Wasn't so impressed with the blue screen off axis. 1 was spot on, 2 were shockingly bad.

I don't like the saturated mode, colors are too bright and white is more red now. Sticking with the original boosted mode, I like the more natural colors.
Oh, and no help to the blue shift since that is hardware based.
Man I can't wait for kcal.

Looks terrible to me. Yellow whites and colors are extremely off to me. Boosted is my go to.
Yup after using the phone in saturated mode for two days I'm back with the boosted mode. Saturated mode is REALLY saturated. I find it even more saturated than the Note 8.
Too hard to tell in a video, but in person saturated makes everything pop like it's a Samsung panel. Pretty nice, I love it when I'm not in the mood for the most accurate colors.
I definitely appreciate the update Google.
I've found that the saturated mode is great when navigating android, but when looking at real life pictures, boosted is best. I think we need a slider to fine tune it to our own likings. I think we need a little more saturation than boosted, but less than saturated.
Has anyone else noticed that when you look at a picture and angle it for the blue tint it actually looks better? I took a picture of my daughter and the saturation makes her face look red, but when i tilt it, the extra blue overlayed on top of it looks almost perfect!

I think it has helped the blue tint look better on mine too. Mine wasn't terrible to begin with but on boosted mode it looks even better. I would love to see a slider too like on the Note 8 I had. That would please many people.

I agree! With saturated mode i think they are also changing the color temperature because there's sortof on dark orangish or reddish tint over everything now where before it was more of a bluish tint. We need the slider!

I noticed this too, saturated mode is good but it is a bit too red for me and the colors do make pictures look unnatural but I managed to mitigate some of that with KCAL using root and snoke kernel. I turned down the red and green a bit so now it has a blue hue closer to the natural setting. I also turned down the saturation a bit.
Directly from Google; Further enhancements will be included in our planned December software update and on an ongoing basis thereafter. Our goal is for your Pixel phone to get more useful and delightful over time.
So maybe we will get a slider after all? We'll find out soon enough.
I still like boosted the best.

I'm loving saturated mode. Besides the whites being more reddish instead of blue it's pretty close to what my OG Pixel XL was.
If you guys want to know what really colors should look like either buy or find a monitor with 100% coverage on sRGB range and which are properly factory calibrated.
http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/monitor-colour-spaces-adobergb-srgb-2949078
I am 100% the pixel or for that matter any phone out there lacks realistic representation of colors, and therefore images.
Whites should be at 6500k.
Also be wary of your photos you take, what you see could be severely oversaturated but in reality its probably not so good or vivid.
To this date, there is no phone with realistic colors.
Cost and people being addicted to neon colors could be reasons.
So is boosted the exact same as "vivid colors" or is it a little bit better?
