With the Galaxy Note, do you still find yourself neediny a tablet? What devices are you presently using on a daily basis?
I currently use my 5.3 inch Galaxy Note as a phone/tablet but find myself using my 15 inch laptop more merely to save battery life.
I am looking into an Asus Transformer to replace my laptop. The one here looks good...

Alternatively, I could simply buy a Mugen extended battery. It would add some heft but then I would have the battery life of a tablet device - something I find the Note lacks.

The Asus is the best tablet for me, as the keyboard dock would allow me to do my homework on it, and I would want a 10 inch tab if any. 7 inches is not enoughof a step up, in mu opinion, from any high-end smartphone nowadays that has a 4.5+ inch screen. The size difference between the Nexus 7 and Note is especially minimal.
Buying an extended Mugen will costs me almost a hundred dollars - more eveb perhaps thanks to VAT here in the UK . But it will offer me one perfect device and I would then only need a laptop for homework. Also, I couldn't afford two data plans and my unlimited 3 mobile plan does not alow tethering, unless there is a way around thia that anyone knows of?

Of course, the Asus Transformer Pad 300 has some pretty good specifications compared to other tabs and - unlike the Note - it can run tablet apps. The keyboard dock also looks useful. So, what do you all recommend?

I still use my original Transformer quite a lot. I've got the keyboard dock but use it less than I thought I would although I usually pair it up when not in use as it charges the tablet up brilliantly. I am looking to sell it (if anyone is interested) as I want a Note 10.1.
I'm too lazy to even go get my tablet from across the room and turn it on. My phone is always with me an arm reach away. It's so much easier and quicker, and my hand/wrist doesn't get tired from holding that heavy tablet. If I want to watch movies, I have a TV hooked up to my PC for that, with real speakers. I only have a One X right now, but that 4.7" is enough to make me semi-forget about my tablet. What will the 5.3" note that I ordered do?
Lol you know the funny thing is, I don't consider myself to have big hands. I guess my fingers or long, but I don't see it that way. Holding the One X, I have to sort of claw it since it's thin and angular on the side, sloping towards the screen. The Galaxy S III is probably wide enough, but lacks the thickness for comfortable grip too. The note I tried out at the store just engulfs my hand and I can grip it perfectly. It fits so well. I dunno about my pockets... I had a 7" nook color and could manage holding it at the latter half of my fingers without too much trouble. Too bad it doesn't fit in a pocket!
Used my missus iPad a few times to get her out of a pickle when the apps, need killing or updating, other than that I leave it to her, she loves it, it is big compared to my note, but then it is handy for showing friends family photos.

Thanks for all of your responses. As I said, it is a toss up between purchasing either an extended Mugen battery or an Asus Transformer Pad 300 and I'd like to hear what you all think I should purchase. Buying a Transformer would give me more screen real-estate, safe my phone's battery some heavy usage, a truly portable computer-like device and the keyboard would mean I wouldn't need to turn my laptop on to do my homework. However, buying a Mugen battery offers me a sole device capable of almost all my daily technological usage and I'd only have to switch to a laptop for some homework or if I wanted to do some light PC gaming (my laptop can't handle many games naturally).

Well, 10 inches is almost double the size of the Note, so it is a much larger size. I initially wanted a new laptop, as my current one is failing to run the games I recently purchased on the Steam summer sales. But, seeing as we have a main family computer capable of running these, I've begun to think about purchasing a 10 inch tab. The Transformer Pad 300 seems to offer me the functionality of a keyboard for homework at home, but I can take it off and simply carry the tab when I want to do some viewing in bed for example.

I disagree slightly here.
I have a Transformer Prime, a Nexus 7, and a Note.
The Prime is largely unused unless I am going somewhere where there is WiFi and I think that I may need to look at some work related issues - I don't care what anyone says, the Prime can serve quite well as an impromptu Netbook for the most part. It is seldom undocked these days though, and this is especially true now I have the Nexus 7 too.
Prior to getting the Nexus 7, I would mostly use my Note at home, but now I find myself reaching for my Nexus 7 more and more often - whilst 1.7" may not seem like much it makes a world of difference when reading books or comics. I had an original Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I've always been a fan of the 7" form factor.
My Note is still my primary media consumption device though, and if I could only keep one I would keep the Note, not just because it's also a phone (which I would require anyway) but because it can do everything the other devices can and more, even if sometimes it is slightly less convenient. Yesterday, whilst at the gym, I had an urgent call from work regarding something that required my attention, and I used Splashtop on the Note to connect to my PC at home in order to make some coding changes - it would've been a lot easier on the Prime, but given I was on an exercise bike at the time, that wasn't an option!

I see two options really...
Purchase an extended Mugen battery for my Galaxy Note, which will allow me to use the device fairly comfortably as a tablet with around 9 hours of screen time. The problem with this is that the battery turns the Note into a literal brick and, unless I purchased a wireless headset, I doubt I'd be able to comfortably make calls in public (not that I make calls at all on my phone really as I mainly just text). However, having one sole device that is still portable and offers me almost everything I need to do technologically - except homework- has some real appeal.
Purchase an Asus Transformer Pad 300, which will allow me to spare my Galaxy Note some heavy usage throughout the day and, consequently, have a longer lasting battery life. The keyboard will allow me to almost replace my laptop, as the device comes with Polaris Office installed for free. The larger screen would make my hours of YouTube browsing much more comfortable also. However, this option is much more expensive.

Thanks, but to me 7 inches is not enough of an increase - having personally seen my relative who lives with me's Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 also lacks a Micro-SD/SD card slot, which is something I'd have to have in a tablet or any mobile device personally.

Yes, but 5" is still kind of small to use every day!
I used to use my Galaxy note as tablet using Paranoid rom. Due to dpi (213), my eyes was easy to get tired and decided to move back to samsung rom with original setting and now everything seems fine even though I sometimes miss tablet interface.
Now I am using new ipad as tablet and I am very happy now. Bigger screen and feel like I am reading text on paper. I do also have a logitech unltrathin keyboard and I can use it as bluetooth keyboard and front cover as well. It is much sharper than galaxy note screen. I am planning to have a data share plan so I can use my new ipad as LTE tablet !
It is all about preference but I do prefer to have a tablet separately due to size of screen and comport for my eyes.

i was really looking forward to buy an Note 10.1 but with just resolution of 1280x800px - no way!
my dream tablet need a high resolution display like the iPad or at least 1080p

There is good Android tablet hardware, but tablet software...not so much. However, with the popularity of the Nexus 7, I suspect that will soon change as developers will produce tablet apps.
I sold my TF101 today on ebay for 245 no dock 8gb and a leather case. My baby was in good condition. I will be getting a Nexus 7 for now. Until they come up with something higher than 1080p and quad core.
It's funny I'm going from 10.1 to a 7inch. I hate 7 inch tablets but since it's a Google tablet. I'm giving it a try.
I'm going to miss this community. We have so many talented devs here. I hope the Nexus 7 forum is the same.
It will be shipped on Tuesday morning. I have one last day with it.

Nexus 7 is great I have TF101 and N7. Just watch out for screen lift in your device and you might want to wait for a new batch of N7 for them to fix it.
i was going to get a higher res one and/or faster one but now that jellybean is out this thing is so damn fast... i'm pretty picky and i'm actually happy with it. i wish the bezel was smaller though.
looking at the windows 8 tabs since i'm enjoying my samsung focus flash.
It would be interesting to hear a long term (after the honeymoon) report from you six months down the road. Specifically looking to hear what your experience was going from a 10 to a 7.
I waited for the Infinity and now I'm waiting for the Amazon Fire 2. By Sep 6 I will know for sure if the F2 will beat the N7 then decision time!
BTW, I'm keeping my 101s. The 1280x800 res will be here for a long time and the Tegra 2 is not a slouch either.
What do you think the Kindle Fire will have that will make it so compelling? Stock Google love with Tegra 3 and a 216ppi display is pretty hard to beat.

I was considering doing the same, but I thought that the portrait orientation and smaller screen size would outweigh the benefits of the Nexus 7. I'm very happy with my TF101, and if I'm going to get a new tablet it would have to be of a similar size.
you`ll regret it I am afraid, 7 inch is too small.
Had the original galaxy tab and as my first major android device I thought it was wicked. Only issue for me is that it genuinely felt like an over sized smart phone at times so when I got the tf with the dock it just felt like a proper tablet experience.
However, I've heard the nexus7 is a great performer and video and games run real sweet. I sometimes miss that pocket size portability of the gtab...... but then I guess that's why I got my s2.
Thinking about the tf300 but may wait for the infinity and the big price drop that I've been informed about.

My primary reason for getting a 7 is portability and if the F2 can match the N7 with better memory and battery life then I may go for it. Just have to wait and see what Amazon has to offer.

I initially didn't want a 7 but as the resolution improved so did the legibility, N7 is definitely one of my choices but Amazon's next tab is about to be announced so holding my breath.
I was considering the N7, but since I have a Galaxy S2 (which, while not GNote-sized, is pretty big already), I don't need a portable tablet. I might switch up or get the Surface tablet though... that keyboard cover looks interesting. But I mean, that's what I thought about the keyboard dock too.
I have both the TF and the N7, and ever since I picked up the N7 about a month ago, that's all I use. The speed is incredible. I've run RaymanFX's JB ROM and CM9, and while both were improvements over stock, it doesn't hold a candle to the smoothness of the N7. Most of my tablet use is browsing in Chrome, and that's also where there's the biggest difference. The performance improvement in other areas isn't as dramatic.
The other major plus is the portability. It fits in my suit pocket, my jacket pocket, and even in the pockets of my shorts. As a result, I'm more likely to carry it around with me. I never bothered tethering before, but since I have the N7 with me often, it comes in handy.
If a keyboard is somewhat important, there are a number of folio cases with BT keyboards available for about $30-40. Sure, it's not as elegant as the TF solution, but it works. Since you're coming from HC/ICS on the TF, I would strongly recommend switching your N7 to the tablet UI. The phone UI just doesn't do it justice.
The N7 will probably be my last Android tablet for a while. I'm looking to pick up the Transformer Book. I'm a Windows consultant, so the idea of a Windows 8 tablet/laptop is pretty appealing. Plus I can run StarCraft .

You took the words out of my mouth, a 7incher is definitely more convenient to carry around. AFA Amazon's K2, if it comes with free 3G like their KDX it could blow away the competition. With GPS and 3G, navigation will be an attractive feature.
So what would you guys suggest, a 10 inch or 7 inch tablet? I'm really torn in the decision to keep my TF101 or "upgrade" to a 7 in Nexus 7. I know it is easier to carry around but is the 3 inch difference in screen size a major difference. I need your opinions!

7 inch on the road, 10 inch or more at home or office. But format is only part of the story, the other consideration is specs like wifi, gps, camera and bluetooth. I intend to have both.
I was going to but the N7 at staples on Tuesday but ima wait for amazon offer (s) first before I spend money. I still need a tablet.i hate using my vita at my college.

for me it´s a simple choice, i´m always with a backpack so 10 or 7 it really doesn´t matter...
but from experience, i found the tf101 a little "tall" for portrait reading... the balance is just not right to do that naturally..
I bought my wife a N7 and we really like it, now I need to get myself one. But the limited 16GB storage ain't cutting it and the wimpy little speakers from N7 is another negative. I'm aware of getting OTG usb adapter to run thumb drive with stickmount app but I don't want to deal with the hassle of having a dildo looking thing hanging down from the N7 tablet when i'm on the go. I don't care about custom rom either, have already tried several ROMs for the N7 in both development sections and none impresses me, they all have bugs, lag, and other crap, so I restored our N7 back to stock and it's butter smooth and couldn't be happier. I'm looking into ipad 3 64GB version or the Asus Infinity 64GB, the latter have SD slot but I keep hearing how the Asus have quality problem so I'm a bit reluctant to get another Asus. I know I would definitely enjoy the Retina display from ipad 3, i have seen one in person and it's all eye candy! Does anybody own both the N7 + ipad 3 or infinity? what's your thought?
I primarily use an iPad 3rd gen (32gb wifi). Just won an N7 thanks to ProClip, and and have found myself using it as my reading device with great success. I would recommend the iPad for the app selection alone.

In either situation, I recommend you get an iPad and find a different forum.
I have a ipad 3 32GB wifi and a nexus 7. You can't go wrong with the retina display the ipad has. Like you said, It's eye candy. I do love the N7 because of it's portability. It's small, can fit in your pocket if you have big enough pockets.. I love them both. Glad I have them both!

Glad to hear, we already have 2 Android phones running on UKB roms along with the N7 on stock JB now, but never own anything from apple so I thought why not throw in a bit of variety? when i have the itch to flash custom roms I can always do it on the Dinc2 or the N7 so I ain't missing anything. The Retina display would be the top reason to get the Ipad 3, that long with bigger storage. I'm using the NEC PA271W on my PC for photo and video editing so I'm a bit spoiled by wide gamut display, the ipad 3 is as close to sRGB as we can get at this point in time. fishfuzz also bring up a good point, app selection, but is the long charging time really that bad on the ipad 3?

At least a full night to full charge it .. especially if it's at 0.
I have both the IPad 3 and N7 and they are pretty good companions. The N7 gets used more here as it has that perfect size and we here all have Android phones. But for any critical viewing or listening we use the IPad.
If you want to spend the money go get the 64GB IPad, it's an excellent tablet and the image quality is unbeatable. The only other Android tablet would consider is the T700 and like you I have issues with trying out another Asus tablet.
Well this is a nexus forum lol... But what are u looking for in a tablet? As much as I hate apple, I will agree that they do make a quality product that is very user friendly that and they have a nice selection of apps. Memory is always important and the n7 Deff lacks memory but I have a usb otg. Also keep in mind that the ipad mini will be available soon so if size is a factor than u will have 2 options available.

I've had a tf101 and a tf201 and no issues regarding build quality. What really annoys me about Asus tablets, and the reason I won't buy another, is that you need to unlock the bootloader to root and once is unlocked you can't ever receive over the air updates again.
If Asus won't allow me to make my tablet resellable again after rooting, I'm looking elsewhere.
I did consider a galaxy note 10.1 but the display resolution is a bit low for a 10" tab. It looks ok just text in particular just isn't that sharp.

I have iPad3 and nexus 7. I had the tf101. The prior comments on iPad3 are true, but no one mentions the relatively sloowwwwww CPU. At the speed the market is moving, I would wait for something that has nexus 7 relative speed, iPad3 relative screen + GPU, thin and light.
The nexus 7 is nicely balanced on CPU, GPU, pixel density, screen vibrancy, energy use, responsiveness, etc. The crop of tablets next year should be able to do this, in a larger screen. I would wait.

There are a ton of posts already with comparisons. If u search for them u can get more information.
Note is the best 10 inch tablet, while n7 is the best 7 inch tablet.
Figure out if u like 10ijch or 7 inch better.

I have both and use them for different reasons. I like to game and read books on the Nexus 7 due to the size.
With the Note 10.1 I like to surf the web, watch movies and listen to music.
If I had to pick one it would be the Note 10.1 due to the quality, the specs and the overall function.

Why get the Nexus 7 when you can just look at your phone? Also, the Note has the pen.

Are you serious? How can you ask people which tablet is "better" for you when you don't even know the basic specs of either tablet? Sounds like you need to do some research before asking your questions -- otherwise, we won't be able to really help you.

What you're asking is comparing apples vs oranges. Which of these tablets is right for you is for YOU to decide. What you want to do with your tablet has everything to do with which one you should choose. Do you value the S-pen? If so, buy the note. Do you want an inexpensive device running plain jellybean with updates straight from Google? Get the Nexus 7.
Whatever you do, do your homework first & familiarize yourself with the devices. The specs and info on both are everywhere on the web. If you want to hear about people's experiences with the Note 10.1, there are TONS of posts here detailing just that. Head over to the Nexus forums to find similar posts on that device, too. Go to the store and play with both in hand. Read about which one is good for the tasks you want it to do. Make yourself a list of pros and cons for each. Given that the two devices you've listed are so vastly different in spec and usage, I should think your choice will end up being an easy one.
That said, I love my Note 10.1, but I bought it specifically for the s-pen feature. It just happens to outperform all of my other devices at just about everything else, too, so I've no regrets with my purchase. Sound quality is amazing (both speakers and with my headphones). I love S-Note & Photoshop Touch. Video playback is great. Games run beautifully & I do not believe I've had a single FC yet. It does everything I want & it does it with ease.

Yes. As others have posted in XDA, not yet.
To expand on my answers, you should know that not all games will work on the Nexus 7 stock due to its size. Same as some games may not work on the 10" platform either (although more seem to run on 10" than 7").
Honestly you should go and figure out why you want a tablet in the first place THEN ask questions. Sounds to me like you are partially obsessed with having the newest Android OS and gaming, which as of this moment leaves you with the Nexus 7 since it is the only one with Jelly Bean stock.
I appreciate all your feedback. I know I'm coming off like I didn't do any research but I did do some... I have never owned a tablet so I wanted some feedback on which one is best. There is no one thing I want to do with it, I want the best tablet to do everything. I want to basically replace my laptop and then some. I want a big screen so this one appealed to me, I want to be able to play games with no lag, software isn't a deal breaker for me but I'm sure JB will get to this device soon enough. I love Sammy, I currently have the epic 4g touch and love it. I've heard excellent thing about the nexus 7 and nothing about the note 10.1 from friends. So I came here...

Whether an Android tablet can do this or not depends on what you do with your laptop. If it's consumption, e-mail, and the occasional document you'll be fine. If you connect to physical networks, use a lot of MS products, and have to format and print stuff you'll be better off looking at a W8 tablet when they come out. One of the biggest differences between a 7" and 10" tablet is portability. With the smaller tablet it's easier to hold with one hand and you can stuff it in smaller places when you're carrying it around. The obvious downside is you give up a lot of display real estate in the process. Go in to a B&M store and spend some time with each trying out the things you'll do most often. My phone has a 4.7" display so to me a 7" tablet isn't a big enough leap to make me want to consider it.

Mainly just browsing, downloading files such as roms, and the occasional torrent file, I have a separate work laptop for all that other stuff. What do you all use yours for?
If you're even considering the Nexus 7, then you're not focused on power. So I'd say that it comes down to 2 things: Are you A)Buying it for any productivity related reasons that would benefit from having a stylus, or B) Going to be playing lots of graphic intensive games? If you answered "yes" to either if these questions, then pick up the Note (Although you could get by with the newest galaxy tab for gaming).If not, get the 7.

Actually for gaming I would go with the Nexus 7 because of Tegra specific games and apps...
Also the Nexus 7 will have a much more active dev scene, if that is what you are into.
That said I went with the Note 10.1. It's actually Samsung's TouchWiz interface and apps that won me over

I own both devices and the Note 10.1 is clearly better for gaming due to faster and smoother performance and much better speakers.
Would pick the note....I came from the transformer prime....No tegra graphics but everything else is a plus....hands down winner for me is the note
I also have both and have hardly touched the Nexus 7 since I got the Note.
If I had to choose only one, it would be the Note without even stopping to blink.

I was in your shoes a few weeks ago. I really wanted to upgrade my Acer A500 with an iPad 3. But then I decided to really question what I wanted. I weighed 10" tablets against the 7" tablets. The Nexus 7 I really liked at first. What turned my off was the lack of a microSD slot. That's one of the things that turned me off to the iPad. I saw the Note from a distance but as soon as I got some time to play with it in the store I was hooked. Writing with the pen is amazing! Plus the difference between a 7" and 10" screen is pretty big. You can watch a video and surf the internet at the same time. I haven't been even a little disappointed since I got my Note!

I heard the note is more pixelated, and wouldn't the nexus 7 be more ideal for games since you can hold it easier? Not that gaming is the deal breaker for me by any means....
I've owned a N7 2012 for about a year, and I have a buyer for my old one, so I'm looking at upgrading. I haven't used a stylus device in years, but I used to love them: precision text editing, sketches to supplement an explanation, and unambiguous link clicking in the browser.
I expect longevity from my devices, and my previous experience has been that the charging connector breaks first on every mobile device I've had. This gives the N7 the serious advantage with the Qi inductive charging.
OTOH, the Note's performance is more future-proof: a 96GB Note (thanks SD-card expansion) will stay useful longer with a 32GB N7, and the benchmarks also come out clearly in favour of the Note: (Slashgear Note 6900 http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/quadrant_gnote8_attwtmk.jpg vs N7 5600 http://cdn.slashgear.com/wp-content...enshot_2013-07-25-13-17-52-google-nexus-7.jpg ).

I prefer note 8 due to larger size and I won't mind carrying a slightly bigger one. Was coming from 7.7. I would have taken if it's nexus 8.

I don't know what I can add except my reason for buying a Note 8.0--the pen. I bought my Note for school to replace everything in my bookbag--no more notebooks, no more laptop, no more text books. So far I'm very happy with my decision. I was also considering the new Nexus but because I wanted the ability to take notes, the lack of a wacom pen was off-putting. The Note was well worth the extra money for me.
I'm split between these two devices also. The new Nexus has the 1080p screen and prompt updates in its favor. The Note 8, suprisingly has a very good screen despite being 1280*800, but don't expect to get any updates for this. I mean you can always go AOSP or AOKP but that defeats the purpuse of even buying a Note. So if being stuck at Android 4.1.2 forever doesn't bother you the Note is a good choice.

why should we not expect updates for the note 8.0? I thought they were already working on e 4.2.2 build. in fact a quick search suggests thats its already available
I had the nexus 7.2 for a week and a half, the 16Gb version and it had a very nice screen fast processor but returned it due to frequent reboots, apparently it only happens on the 16Gb version. Got the note 8 instead. Am very satisfied with it.
I'd recommend you get the Nexus 7.2 first use it for a week then return and get the Note 8, that way you can see the strength and weakness of both and then decide which one is more useful to you. I am glad I did that, the Nexus 7.2 was how to say this not to hurt anyones feelings -plain vanilla- which is not bad, but you can't really compare the two because of the S pen feature on the Note 8. The Note 8 screen is not bad at all, but the 7.2 beats it, and I find that I do use the S pen more often than I thought I would. Also I'm a long time Samsung user and I like their products. I gave the Nexus 7.2 a try but am more comfortable with the Note 8, also love the S pen, for that alone it was worth it to me.
So as I mentioned get one use it as is for a week or two then return it and get the other one. Test both, but in my opinion you can't really pin the two tablets against each other. They are both good just depends what you are going to use it for, if you're a big game player get the Nexus, if you going to use the tablet for other things get the Note 8

I've owned more than a few Samsung devices, I currently own a two SGS 3, AT&T and Sprint. Neither are on 4.2.2, which is why i'm on CM10.1.2. I'd be pretty happy with a TouchWiz 4.3, but I know Samsung is pretty lame at updates that's why I made that statement, if the Note does get the 4.2.2 update, that's great, but I don't think they will go past that.
Hopefully Samsung is doing an overhaul on TouchWiz all together, I may stick with Samsung devices, otherwise my next device will be a Nexus. I've given up hope for the skin based phones and updates.
It really comes down to how much you value the s-pen....i thought I'd get much more use out of it (i do a lot of handwritten note taking, but at meetings i typically type in notepad) and never did so I just put my Note8 up for sale because the extra $100 wasn't worth it because it was still faster/easier for me to jot something quick on a post it than to take out the spen, launch the note app, scribbe something, save it....
however when I was in school the ability to take down quick notes and write on-screen on pdfs/ppt was *very critical* and I loved my W7 tablet with ntrig (this is all pre-tablets so it just depends on your use case
With OTG usb, you can still use microsd on the Nexus7, althought it's a bit more work and takes up the charging port..not sure if the new N7 has that yet (you had to be rooted on the old N7 to use it)
screenwise, the new N7 quality is much better, but I find the slightly larger note 8 to actually be easier to read on and use
I'm close to making my final decision because I refuse to keep the Note 8.0 and the N7 (2013) that I currently have.
The N7 is super nice. The display keeps drawing me back over and over. I like the fact that I can watch Netflix on it and not accidentally press the back button like I tend to do on the Note 8.0. I love the crisp text in my ebooks. And who doesn't love stock?
The Note 8.0 is better from a productivity standpoint for me, and it's why it currently leads. Outside of holding it in landscape and pressing buttons accidentally, I actually prefer the feel of the Note 8.0 more than the new N7. The display isn't nearly as bad as some would have you believe either. Sure if you have it side by side the N7, you'll see it, but in my opinion it looks real good.
Also a sidenote for comic book readers. I use Comixology, and I'm not a fan of the panel to panel view unless I'm forced to use it due to something being very small. It's easier for me to read comics on the Note 8.0 compared to the N7. Probably because of the extra inch of real estate.
Probably the reason I still go back and forth is because I know I can expect updates and a vibrant dev community on the N7, but probably not so much with the Note 8.0. Heck, I have the AT&T LTE variant, and I sadly can't even root that yet. Good luck with your decision.
I went ahead and ordered the 32GB Nexus 7.2. I figure I can always sell it for about what I paid for it if I decide not to keep it.
I got the previous Nexus 7 as a gift, but actually ended up selling it (and keeping the more lowly spec'd Tab 2 7" I already had) because the Nexus was just so flaky. Apparently it was a great device prior to 4.1, but I only got onboard after that. Plus the speakers were PATHETIC (unacceptable for a device that screams multimedia consumption.) I'm hoping those are better this go-round as I use mine for backgound music/video quite a bit.
There's pros to being on the bleeding edge of updates I guess. But I almost view it like you're being an unofficial beta tester. Samsung may not always have the latest official Android version on all its flagship devices, but all my experiences with them to-date have been outstanding. There's a reason (beyond just marketing) that they're the most dominant OEM in the Android world.
If the primary purpose is reading as OP has posted, I would suggest note 8 to be better choice.
My primary reason for buying note 8.0 was reading (PDF's as well as comics) and considering that almost 38 GB of my external 64 Gig card is occupied by books i would say i am more than pleased by my choice.
The extra screen size does matter here though both share similar 16:10 aspect ratio , which is quite ok,
another surprise feature, the reading mode that samsung built into this is amazing (though it might appear strange at first) but now I just can't imagine reading without that , it's easier on eyes,less stress and for me makes for much better concentration. add a good reader app (I absolutely love the free perfect viewer app for pdf and comics)
The secondary thing for me was the s-pen. since i have been using wacom tablets on pc since late 90's I found this quite adequate. My N-5100 costed me around $530 USD) which is surely definitely on the costlier side of things however I would still consider it worth that extra dough.
I also primarily use this at home and mine is still unrooted (haven't found a need or reason to root it yet).
Gotta decide what's your most important feature.
For me tablets can have two distinct purposes, media consumption device or productivity device. As a media consumption device there isn't much use to me for a tablet because honestly, most things are just more convenient to do on my phone since I always have it, and it has a data connection.
Now as a productivity device, there are a couple things the note 8 excels at. PDF and textbook portability/editing, handwritten notes, and remote desktop control. The spen takes this device to a higher level of productivity because there is no device with a comparable stylus. But for anything else like word document editing, media production, music/picture editing, tablets in general fall short because laptops/desktops are just better.
So if you want a media consumption device, the new Nexus 7 is probably better or even the iPad for that matter. But for productivity the spen will make up for the other shortcomings like lower screen pixel density, less frequent operating system updates, etc.

It took me ages to decide between the N7 and note 8, and I decided on the note 8. But now I realise, that as I'm going university next year, I'll probably need a laptop, and I'm confused all over again

Agree with almost everything she said as well. I disagree with her assessment of the speakers and volume though. While this year's Nexus finally has proper speakers they're still not as loud as the Note 8's. The quality is a bit better as far as separation/bass goes, but not as loud.
I'm probably going to stick with the Note 8. It's just hard to go back to 7" display no matter what the resolution. It's great that the text is clear, but it's tiny - and the saturation isn't as good. And I've already experienced the Nexus bugginess (unresponsive to touches) several times as well.

I currently own an ipad 4 (so I'm used to looking at retina display), I've had the note 10.1, nexus 10, etc....
Honestly I think 8" is the sweet spot. I want to love thenew nexus 7 so bad but I feel like 7" is just a tad too small. The extra screen area from an 8" tablet seems sooo much larger and more usable when browsing websites. Am I crazy? I feel like I keep reading about screen clarity vs spen vs whatever ... but to me the real battle is do you prefer 7" vs 8" - I'm probably going to get both and then return the one I dont' like. As I said, I'm used to the retina screen as well as the beautiful screen on my htc one; however just playing around with the note in the store, the screen honestly isn't that bad and colors are quite quite good.
That said, the nexus 7 screen is by far superior BUT I still think the larger size provides so much better screen real estate and thus ease of use.
Anyone not get the nexus 7 simply because they don't like a 7" tablet?
