I'm receiving my new VZW G2 tomorrow. Just was wondering what the best root/ unlock method to use is? Any ROM suggestions. Any help would be appreciated. I apologize in advance if this is the wrong section.

You may want to look in this section "G2 Android Development (Verizon)"
You should be able to find everything you need there.

There is no bootloader unlock, but we have the loki exploit. This is a workaround that circumvents the need to unlock the bootloader to install ROMs, etc. So with that out of the way, to root you'd want to use this thread.

Check out the development section for the Verizon G2. It should have you covered. CyanogenMod/AOSP-based ROMs are still unstable as of yet, but Verizon progress is arriving quick. If I were you, I'd wait until they do a beta release and perhaps have support for double-tap to wake.
All other ROMs are based off stock. They are a huge improvement over your factory ROM, removing bloatware and such. I like CleanROM for the AT&T variant, but have found that for straight-up features and de-bloat on Verizon, Malladus is quite nice and wins my recommendation. It also has the fix for Mobile Hotspot not reporting to Verizon baked in, as well as a smaller nav bar. I highly recommend using the mods in that thread to get the Recents key on your navigation bar instead of menu. Much more useful.

It is the wrong section! The first post, a sticky, in this forum reads: This device has its own Q&A Forum... Please use it. Questions do not go in GENERAL.
It's okay though, your thread will hopefully be moved. I still answered your question. Just know that some people will be bothered by the clutter we've created

Thanks for all the great info! Greatly appreciated! I'm pretty familiar with Loki. I had the s4 for a short stint.

I came from a GNex as well. I've had my G2 for about 2 weeks now and I'm in love and still finding out little things about it. The rear buttons will take some time to get used to and are styled differently than the other variants. I like the others better but you'll get the hang of it.
I flashed Malladus 1.1.3 last night and it's a huge improvement over stock. It's debloated (there is a ton of bloat on this thing) and doesn't have any negative effects on battery life. One tip I can offer is instead of following the directions to install TWRP, download the free app called Flashify and flash the recovery image. It took two seconds and worked like a charm.

Please do not use Flashify, and please do not recommend Flashify. There is a chance that it will ruin your boot partition, putting your phone into a bootloop that can only be fixed by flashing back to stock. Take the few seconds needed to run the proper adb commands in this thread.
Option 2 is easy and safe. Please use it as opposed to Flashify. The devs on Freenode #lg-g2 have had to help a LOT of people who got screwed over by that app, and therefore removed it from that thread. Please proceed with caution.

Thanks for the heads up. I generally use an adb method opposed to the one click methods. Thanks for all the community support, this why XDA is the best.

This is actually the easiest device I've ever rooted and installed custom recovery. Probably because there was no need to unlock bootloader.
It was quite breeze. I just hope the development for the VZW version picks up.I'm sure it will soon!

I would like to start off saying I just recently purchased a Nexus 4 and I would really like to root it, i'm a complete noob too rooting and have a few questions. I did read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688 and the how too Youtube video. questions below
1. I did see that i can keep the custom rom and just unlock and root my device, but will this allow me to change my cpu speed and such to conserve battery or would i need to install a different kernal and rom?
2. After rooting and unlocking my device and keeping stock rom will i still be able to get OTA updates without reverting back to factory state? or would i have to revert back to factory state DL the OTA update and re-root again?
3. I know that nexus 4 tool kit says Root Stock Jelly Bean builds (upto 4.2.1 JOP40D), can i use this for 4.2.2 or is their a updated Tool kit for 4.2.2? and if their is can someone please provide a link i tried searching for it and couldn't find anything, and preferably from Mr. mskip
I know these questions have probably been asked a million times and i apologies in advance for that. (noob problems )

1. CPU control is a function of the kernel. You can keep the stock kernel, but I'd recommend a custom one. More features and capabilities.
2. I may be mistaken, but I believe your OTA will function as long as you are on the stock ROM and kernel with the factory files in place and the stock recovery. That's a lot to sacrifice for an update, especially when they'll be readily available here.
3. Don't use a toolkit. Use the rooting sticky to learn how to do it right.
thank you

Because when one uses a toolkit nothing is learned. If they ever run into a problem they won't know how to fix it. It also makes it more difficult for others to help because they don't understand the terminology.
I wrote more about this last January. That thread is linked in my signature "Dangers of toolkits and one click root methods."

I wouldnt worry about updates.
Devs upload there ROMs with new android updates quickly.
Itll be much easier just to flash custom UPDATED ROMs than ota updates in my opinion.

I strongly suggest you go back and read the "root" threads for this information. You can use the forums "search" feature to find many other threads on the subject that should be helpful as well. Jumping into things without reading about them will only get you in trouble. At the very least, you will end up asking a bunch of questions that have already been answered many times. Good luck.

Not sure if this is in the right place. I apologize if its not and please move it accordingly.
For the S3 there was a running thread where some developer would take every AT&T update, inject root into it and make it available for flashing via custom recovery. I know there is a subset of members here who are fine with TW. And now with the work Nottach put into his xposed module we get all the cool theming without losing TW features. We can also freeze or remove stock stuff as we see fit since all future updates would be flashed this way. This allows that subset of folks to freeze the stock updates and still be on the latest and greatest instead of updating and then rooting again. Its also a great restore option without needing Kies or ODIN once you have the custom recovery installed. If its possible now that we have custom recoveries I would love for someone who is capable to make it happen. Right now it's just the original and MDL update.
Just my request. I belong to that subset.

Agreed, just gotta get on board with it before the originator of the "stock TW - rooted, deodexed, zip aligned, init.d support" ROM turns it into a circus with all the crazy mods no one initially wanted.... I've seen that happen one too many times and it actually caused me to unsubscribe from the thread! Too much work turns that stock ROM into what YOU actually want on your phone, not many others!
Please note, I'm NOT talking about MDOB, I like that ROM for what it is, but I want to bring it back one step before too many features are stripped off of it so I can choose what to remove myself, as well as allow full integration of Nottach's work and my SystemUI tweaks! Hell, if I knew what I was doing with some of this stuff, I'd try and make one myself, I just don't have the skill, time, or patience to maintain a thread on it though, unfortunately

+1 on this
Every other device I've had I have been able to get just a deodexed rom with root only. I guess we will have to learn or wait some more.
I guess I agree with you guys on a few of the other things I would do any way (de-odes, etc) and having the ability to remove what I want. I hope someone takes heed. Root injected ROM please (deodexed, zipaligned, etc ok) but then leave it to me to do whatever else. Anyone taking up the task?

I'm working on cleaning up the app and a new battery icon implementation that should cover any ROM or SysUi.

Im talking about the updates, my bad.
This is what I meant when I posted this request. They are doing it on the international s4. Wonder why no interest here. Best part is that it keeps everything original, no counters are tripped and no status is changed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250824
I'd be really happy with a Scotts Clean Rom version, he runs the update and posts the latest rom soon after.
It's near stock and often adds options to put back in most that was stripped out.
I run it on my Note 2 and it is a thing of beauty. So smooth, still some touch-wiz but without AT&T bloat.
Unfortunately he doesn't have the funding for an AT&T S4 and thus far has only developed the Verizon S4.

Thoughts?
I've been noticing that there doesn't seem to be much activity around the Sprint Version of the HTC One. Correct me if i'm wrong. I did manage to get the recovery changed and the device rooted.
Recovery didn't go too smoothly because i didn't realize there was a different TWrp for sprint and i assume the same goes for clockwork. I tried using both and wouldn't work until i found a very brief mention of a sprint TWRP file that ended in wls.
I really wanted to try the Revolution HD ROM but quickly noticed that it seemed like most all version of the htc one are supported except the sprint version. There is a v9.4 but i have yet to find it.
Question: Is the sprint version that different from the others? That difficult to work with? or is the interest just too low?
I was thinking i'd try to have this thread (easily searchable for sprint users) with some quick info on how to deal with those devices. Though i will admit i'm not that skilled in software mods. Just a member of the community that appreciates all the work you guys put in on all these devices and supporting the freedom we enjoy to use our devices as WE please.
If anyone want to join in and commenting about Sprint specific devices and issues.. feel free.
Sorry the sprint version tends to lag behind others because of the cmda chip. Since all international leaks are probably going to be from gsm models, they are only going to be usable on gsm versions of the phone. Until someone leaks a cdma version of 4.2.2 there's not much we can do.

Recovery Experience
Step 1 - Unlocking Boot Loader
I used the Revolution HD thread as a start point. It is very detailed and easy to follow. It directed me to this flashing Guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618... The bootloader process is easy and pain free.
Step 2 - Flashing to a more advanced recovery
The guide doesn't suggest which to use. I went to the Device essentials (sticky thread of the forum). The choices seem to be TWRP and Clockwork ... (if there are more feel free to suggest). Unfortunately this didn't go as planned because I was unaware that the recoveries for a sprint device were different ... So for you ... if you are using TWRP you must use the recovery specifically for Sprint devices .. currently the file name is "openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7wls.img". I will try to find a link or anyone can volunteer it.
1. The first thing it allows you to do is save your current recovery. I was unable to do this because i had the wrong recovery and by the time realized it i had tried to flashboot flash. However, you can flashboot boot .. which basically allow you to load the recovery and save your current recovery. then you can flash and replace your recovery with the new one.
That is it.. that is kind of where i am at for now. I haven't flashed a ROM .. and i will say i am having some difficulty with both "superuser" it keeps asking to update but then fails and Wifi Tether .... so i'll return with answers to that when i find them.
Hope this helps someone

Resolved SuperSU and Wifi Tether Issue. The issue was the binary update. HOwever i am not sure how i fixed it. i just tried using the TWRP/CWM method for a third time and it work. it rebooted into recovery, installed the binary file and booted back into the OS. SuperSU worked and then i tried Wifi Tether and it started to work as well .. FYI "settings for Wifi Tether" that i use
1. Device profile "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)". 2. Wifi-Driver reload (checked).
Now I just need the awesomest best ROM .. any suggestions!?
I've hard bricked this thing once trying to flash a rom once. Tried to gain custom recovery via AUTOREC. Should be called Autowreck.
Sometimes it is best just to ask to be pointed in the right direction.
I just learned about LOKI and SAFESTRAP. BUT are these just for TW based ROMS? I want a CM based ROM. PACROM, specifically. I see others with this AT&T phone running it.
Will someone please help a noob with a tutorial or advice and stop me from running in circles? W/ rooted 4.4.2, NC1 build.
Start with reading well the SafeStrap thread by Hashcode in Q&A
and the All Thinks ATT, MK2 in General
You can only use SafeStrap and can not flash non TW roms or custom recoveries/kernels, so CM AOSP etc
Sorry

Been reading the safe strap thread. 89 pages! Stumped on the first one. ENCRYPTED? Not sure. How do I tell? Nb1, Mk2, Mf3 software? No idea. Did not see it in settings> about device. How do I tell is the next step I guess.

Get a terminal emulator on your phone. In it type:
su
getprop ro.bootloader
What does it say? Look at the last three characters
Edit, in about devices what is your baseband, last three characters?

Sorry, I thought you NC1 now?
jd will get you sorted, he is more hands on with safestrap than i am
but, the gist of it is going to All Thinks ATT, MK2 and to post 5
but read all you can in both threads--:good:
Nc1. So this is the SafeStrap file: JFLTE-3.72-kk-B01.apk. How a bow the encryption determination? Sound like a bootloader if it is encrypted.

Did you get nb1 from your baseband? Is your device encrypted? That's different than than the bootloader. Your bootloader is definitely locked. But you can root by updating to nc1 and using towelroot and then safestrap.

You have to use the stock slot, not a secondary slot

What are you trying to flash? PAC isn't going to work, it's cm based. You can only flash touch wiz based roms

Anything else. I have Gravitron zip ready to go. But I cannot even get S'S to open now. "SafeStrap has stopped working". Even after attempted reinstalls. If there was someone here local I could just delegate this to, I would.

You probably have to use Odin to re-flash nb1 and start over

That may be. Got safestrap to start working by using se linu mode changer. Still stuck at updating partition details. Gonna start a thread on that I think. Maybe one on the search functions too.

Just as an FYI, I've had very good results with Golden Eye installed via SafeStrap. No problems with it, whatsoever, in my experience. That being said, I'm tired of being restricted to touchwiz ROMs so I've bought a T-Mobile S4 (unlocked SIM/Bootloader) and will be selling my ATT one soon.

Starting to feel the same way. Flashing this sgh-i337 is turning out to be quite an infuriating ordeal. So much conflicting info. Allllll these ROMs available for S4, it seems. But they don't work because this version isn't compatible. And the Tw ones I've tried ALL DAY are not working either. Granted, I was not using SS correctly initially, but now that they are successfully loading in the stock slot are not working. Graviton never boots, stays on the ouroboros snake screen. Imperium has no data or wifi etc (i9505 rom? I tried it as it said it was verified working 9th i337. Nope. Figured it was a problem when it said i9505 on my model). Goldeneye, actually can connect, wifi etc. But when I change settings in Wanam, it does not take them (after reboot). Had all the other connectivity issues until I flashed a patch. Also, I was pretty happy to see than I could activate hotspot. But my device was nowhere to be found by other devices. Modules, kernals, patches, oh my... out of all the tutorials for S4's on the wide wide world of internets, nothing seems to fly. This must be the red headed bastard child of Android.
I know it is all user error, but can nothing be simple?
Just want a simple rom and hotspot. That looks awesome. Hrm.
About to try this GE download. GE-XXUGNG4-37.zip. I tried the later NG-8-38 version last time. And yes, I did the ST update at&t module update previously.
Great googley moogley! I think he's finally got it, folks! Ooooh. Niiice. So smooth. Roomy!
This hacking biz ain't for the faint of heart. Thanks guys!!! MUCH APPRECIAT3D! :good:
