Assuming you are in the US you can use Google Voice. I use this as my main number on my DroidX and the app on my Galaxy tab. There are other texting apps like text free but I am not sure of tablet support.
I've tried Jaxstr to send SMS from a wifi tab but no luck
I have the wifi only version and use google voice for texting.
i also use Text+ which now also supports voice calls

1+ to TextPlus. Its worth trying out and it works on adroid and ios. They give your own number and I beleive unlimited txting. The calls you need to pay for though.
I got the Wifi + 3G and I can text to other phone numbers.
I use Textab on my DX and 10.1. Works pretty well, but after awhile my DX really starts to lag while using the Textab app.
Need to finish setting up my google voice.
If you use Exchange, you can also SMS via the e-mail client. Also, if you're with AT&T they have a unified messaging app in the Market that allows you to send and receive texts on your tablet over Wi-Fi.
Google voice for text.. grooveIP for talking over wifi..
galactic FORCE!
I use Heywire. You can add in your facebook and twitter stuff in there.

just got my SGTab today and found one called mysms. works pretty well, very similar to desksms. you need to install the app on your phone too, and it's all free
On my 3g Tab you can use Messaging built in without any messing round, assuming your SIM is enabled for it.
3G ones have sms by default as it were on the s2

This is what I do also, especially useful when you find yourself inside buildings with wifi but no wireless.
you can also use whatsapp
Tablet Talk is pretty cool for using your phone over wifi/bluetooth also.
If you have an android phone you could use desksms. It's made by Clockworkmod. You set it up on the phone and with a yearly charge it lets you text, from your number, using gtalk or gmail on tablet or in browser. Been using it since it was released. It's great.

I'm having an issue sending and receiving mms messages, unless my 6p is plugged into a power source. It was working fine until last Saturday. I'm running stock, with the bootloader unlocked. I don't have any adblockers, and tried changing the APNs, and some other tricks people have tried on the forum. Any help or advice would be great.

You didn't list what you tried, so... try turning off wifi calling preferred.

I apologize, I have tried turning off WiFi, turning on and off airplane mode, enabling and disabling auto mms download. I have WiFi calling off. As soon as I plug my 6p into a power source it will download them. It isn't restricted to just pictures, or contact cards.. I also received a longer text that was sent as an mms and it wouldn't download.

Which carrier and texting app are you using? I've heard there were issues with an update to Verizon's texting app recently in regards to MMS.

The change to the Verizon app was they disabled MMS over Wifi with the recent update. You can get around that restriction by installing a previous version of the app.

I'm on Verizon, I'm using the stock messenger app. I've tried Hangout as well but same result. I have not tried the Verizon app. I know the newest update was causing issues and would have to install the previous version.

Where is a good trustworthy place to download the previous version of the Verizon messages app?

I was able to resolve the MMS issue last night. I downloaded the Verizon messages+ app ver. 6.0.6 and tested to make sure that I was able to send myself a picture and was, I then went to my APN setting reset to default, retested with the VZW app and still worked, back to APN changed MMSC and MMS port. Reboot my phone checked that the APN setting didn't change, did a retest with VZW still worked. Opened messenger (stock app) and did a test and MMS was working there as well. So far still using messenger and things are still working. Hope that helps anyone.

Is anyone having a similar issue with Rogers in Canada? My regular text messages usually send immediately but when I send photos or screenshots (MMS), it will get stuck and won't send. Also, when these MMSs are stuck, my regular SMSs won't send either until I get a notification that MMSs has failed. Then all my SMSs can be sent. It seems like Rogers issue for not being able to process larger MMSs but I want to know if others using Rogers are experiencing it.
Love the app, but trying to hide the notification. It shows up as an Android System app and doesn't have any way to block it. Thanks

Its a VPN icon as block this add a local vpn to block ads. So basically you have an active vpn at all times and since vpn is a system icon (not block this), don't think you have a way to remove it.
Thanks. Are these local VPN apps dangerous in any way?

Hi Everyone,
Although I like using the ATT messages app with my Nexus 6P, I run into problems when I try to send mms messages or initiate group text sms conversations. The messages never send using the ATT app.....I just see spinning dial for over an hour then message usually fails. As soon as I switch to the default messaging app, the problems disappear and I have no problems (other than having to re-create the group message or mms). The "True Caller" App works fine as well for mms and group sms messages. I have this (ATT messages-specific) problem with un- rooted and rooted stock and with custom rooted roms. I think that the problem is goes away with some cyanogen-based and AOSP roms. Has anyone else tackled this (does anyone other than me use the ATT messages app with the 6P LOL)? Thanks!
Are you using Ad Blocker by chance? I had an issue with AT&T and sending messages when I had Xposed installed with Ad Blocker.

Nope I'm not using Ad Blocker nor any Xposed modules. Sometimes I had problems with my Note 3 as well (but not always). I'm now using True Caller and Stock messaging app with no problems. Thanks!
Anyone else having issues sending MMS via anything other than the stock app? I've used Textra, Evolve, and now Google's messenger and none will send MMS nor receive MMS, I have to open the stock app on the phone to get them. I actually went a week not knowing it was happening until someone mentioned they had sent me a pic, so I opened the stock messaging app and showed I had a lot of MMS I hadn't even received.
I revoked permissions from the stock app, reinstalled the other app, even etc, but still nada, can't send/receive MMS at all.
Thoughts?

I am using YAATA no issues, but I did not disable the stock app or verizon messenger+ because my watch uses verizon messenger+
MMSCC Url
http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy
nothing (blank)
MMS Port
80
I also put mms over wifi
I haven't disabled anything, and it still doesn't work. I have given every app all the permissions they needs (stock messenger, google messenger, etc) yet it still won't send MMS in Evolve, or Google Messenger........ONLY the stock LG Messenger.
Anyone have any more ideas?
Actually ive had issues with mine on occasion using Textra. Tells me that my APN settings are not working or something like that. Mines AT&T variant though. Idk whats up but its annoying as hell.
But after like 10 minutes it works just fine again.

Did you buy it from Verizon? In other words is it the Verizon model, or just being used in Verizon?

I've had the same issue. The weird thing is it started out working fine - I'd installed Google Messenger and I received mms group texts just fine for a couple days, but now every mms message just says "downloading"...
Same issue here, with Verizon phone. Also worked fine for first week or so using Google Messenger. Now neither that nor LG Messages apps can send/receive MMS - only Verizon Messages+ works.

I can't figure that one out, why it worked initially... I haven't taking the OTA, and I didn't really do anything that should have changed that, it just up and quit...
I've had luck getting Textra to work. There's an MMS Behavior option in there - Legacy appears to work (I think that's the default), system does not, then it's all just perpetually downloading...
not here. using unlocked us996 on Verizon and sends mms on textra fine

correction: apparently LG Messaging and Verizon Message+ both work. Google Messenger and Google Hangouts do not. Guess I'll try some other 3rd party apps...

Textra and Evolve neither worked for me
I've used Textra on my VZW V20 since day one.. ZERO issues.
GOSMS works, as long as you have it set to "legacy".
What's maddening is Textra used to work fine, but then just stopped.
UPDATE: Uninstalled all 3rd party messaging apps, rebooted, reinstalled Textra.......working again. YAHOO!!!!!!!!
Not working h918 on att settings correct no mms

This is the solution. Download YAATA, navigate to Settings > MMS and manually configure the APN using the settings posted by dwertz (see post #2).
