Hi,
how described at the link support.google.com/nexus/answer/3257354?hl=en&ref_topic=3415471 the nexus 7 should not charge when is turned on and plugged to a computer but mine does.
I think it is strange it charges when I plug to usb computer but I need to plug because I use it to test apps during development.
Is it the normal behavior to charge also when turned on?

Hi, dafiduck...
The link you give, (http://support.google.com/nexus/answer/3257354?hl=en&ref_topic=3415471), refers to the second generation Nexus 7 (2013), and not the first generation Nexus 7 (2012). So whilst this...
QUOTE: "Your Nexus 7 can be charged via the USB port on a computer only when Nexus 7 is in sleep mode (screen off) or turned off."
...may be true for the newer Nexus 7, it certainly isn't for the older model.
Indeed, on the many occasions when I've plugged my first generation model into my PC, it immediately starts charging, regardless of whether its in sleep mode or not.
Hope that clarifies it for you.

Maybe it is... but I can't really assist you much if you have the second gen. Nexus 7. This forum is, after all, dedicated to the first gen. Nexus 7.
You might have better luck posting your question on the correct forum somewhere here...

Considering he doesn't get all the crap people have got, like (bloody) bleeding screens, unnecessary multitouches, non-resurrectible pixels, some kind of magic batteries which stay at 100% until they die...
That would really be great if those issues would not have been there in the first place.

My backlight flickers, on occasion. I believe it's when auto-brightness goes to around 30%. That said, when I accidentally put the tablet at 30% brightness, the backlight shut off completely. It was the biggest pain to get it back on again. Anyone else have/solve this issue?

Stock stuck at boot
I've had this issue since day one (when I picked it up on the 27th). It seemed that the device would just get stuck at the boot screen (X logo) and not do anything. I did fastboot unlock, which automatically initiates a reset of the system. Even through that, it didn't work. Is anyone else facing issues with stock? And any suggestions other than keep resetting?

What method did you use to root it? I had a similar issue but it was resolved by holding the volume up, volume down and power button to start the tablet up. after that I was able to restart it and have it work perfectly.(I was rooting with the nexus root toolkit)

Hi everyone,
I recently bought a 16gb 2013 nexus 7 at Walmart, and I really love the feel and the screen clarity of the device. But it has this shutdown problem when I first remove it from the box. Like during the initial setup when I enter in the user name and email address, it turned itself off at least after each step. One after entering my name, one after entering my email address, and one after registering itself with google. After the initial setup, it then do the automatic update to 4.3 and the. It shut itself down a few time during that sessions.
Also, it shut itself down twice white I was watching some YouTube video, and about three other random times while I was casually reading a website forum, I was reading about the issue of nexus 7 random shutdown by the way.
Anyway, I immediately returned the device within that same day of purchase. Though I really like the device and would like to buy it again.
I was wondering if all 2013 nexus 7 device suffer from this random shutdown issue, or did I just got a bad unit.
Thanks everyone

I've had 3 N7's, 2 16GB that had the random reboot issue and my current 32GB that has the random shutdown. Back to Staples this one goes too. Perhaps this will all be sorted when the 32GB LTE is released.

Hi, I was trying to update my nexus 7 from fastboot, one of the fastboot commands for the bootloader gave an error. So I tried to reboot and again same error, so stupid thing I did and I turned it off from the bootloader (when the device was still on). now the device is not responsive, it doesn't turn on or have any reaction. I'm familiar with unlocking bootloader and all the android stuff since the first day of android, so my nexus 7 doesn't have any bootloader in it anymore (at least not a proper bootloader. in the device manager when I plug it in, it shows as a device called APX. can anyone help me get turn it on. as far as it turns on I can handle to flash it with some code lines. but I have no idea how to bring a bricked nexus 7 to life.
and if it helps so far googling I ended up with a program called QPST. if anyone help me use it I think I can bring it to life
I'm even considering donating if anyone help me succeed, cause for one fact I know this device is not coming to life easily
welcome I have the same problem been looking everywhere. Have you got the 2013 because i think qpst is for qualcomm chipset
I have the old nexus 7, and I have tried even nvflash, I can communicate with my device through USB but I need someone who knows better to give me (us) the right files so I can push the data to the device, maybe search for nvflash or nexus 7 blob.bin file if you have never heard of it

I don't know about you but I'm taking a risk of detaching the memory part from the motherboard reprogram it with the boot data and re attach it to the board again. seems like a crazy idea but its better than another 300$ to buy a new one

I'm not that advanced. I downloaded the cardhu driver package directly from nvidia website which seems to have lots of interesting files including nvflash I don't know if you already seen but I used this to get my uid which never happened with anything else, maybe if looked at by someone with more knowledge can pick something important from there. I figured out how to fix it with blob.bin for own device, without my blob.bin I found a generator from acer tablets which generates your device encryption to use someone elses blob.bin using your UID, UID is a good choice. but if you've used costume roms before, there is 50% chance your UID have been modified from the original one. I don't know how it happens, but it did for me in past.
by the way you can read your original UID by just opening back of the nexus 7, its written inside the back of the tablet on the lower part near the speakers
So that means we just need an already made blob.bin. well getting a blob.bin won't be hard, I'll ask around since there are lots of people who backed up their blob.bin

Hi, mehras1991...
Here is my 'blob.bin' (and other associated files) that I generated some months ago, using the flatline procedure.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/37483979/blob_bin.zip
The files in this .zip archive were generated from a WiFi only Nexus 7 2012 model.
Hope this helps... but to be honest, I'll be very surprised if it does... as bootloaders are crypto-signed to a specific Nexus 7.

Yeah, I was able to backup my own blob.bin using the instructions. Still doesn't help me with the bricked Nexus 7 though. Why do they need to make it so difficult? There should be a generic blob that would let u recover a device, or at least a utility to generate a valid blob file knowing only the devices's UID.

so if you have your own blob.bin what's the problem, you can easily recover it with nvflash, just incase your computer doesn't recognize the dead device, don't plug it to a USB 3, it just makes it harder for you to resolve it. when you plug the tablet doesn't turn on, but your computer see the usb port open. and don't leave the tablet pluged to laptop alot, since the tablet can't be charged at this stage, if it runs out of battery then you also have to replace a new battery to boot it up the first time.

Need more Info:
When did this start?
How much time does it take to charge?
Which ROM and kernel are you on?
Do you have a rooted device?

And, What things have you tried?

No, 2012 version and 2013 version are not the same! But I give you a tip: maybe the charging port (micro USB) is dirty, or broken. Charger is broken. I don't have a Nexus 7 2012 so I don't know the hardware and can't help you.

No, 2012 version and 2013 version are not the same! But I give you a tip: maybe the charging port (micro USB) is dirty, or broken. Charger is broken. I don't have a Nexus 7 2012 so I don't know the hardware and can't help you.

Thanks for all helpings. I changed the charger and the usb cable also but nothing happen (i mentioned that). So maybe the thing is battery.
This happened to my 2012 Nexus 7, I had to replace the charging port.
You can get them on eBay for about $20 and if you can use a screw driver, you can change the port out in about 20 minutes.

I had this problem too after not using it for about a month. Replaced the charging port and problem solved! One of the easiest fixes to do
So I've been lurking here since I got my Nexus 4 (over two years ago) to find answers to my problems and usually I've been able to find an answer.
Now, I think my trusty Nexus 4 has finally given up the ghost. I powered it off Thursday night and when I went to power it on Friday morning, I got nothing. It had over 50% battery when I turned it off, so I don't think it's the battery. I've tried to boot it just about every way I can find, but nothing. It's been plugged in most of the weekend and still nothing.
So I'm thinking it's time to start looking for a new phone , what do you all think? If anyone thinks they've got a way to get it to boot up, just let me know, I'll give it a shot.
Thanks!
It sounds like it died. I don't have any suggestions on how to get it running if it doesn't even turn on.

Does your PC detect it at all? Also have you looked in the Nexus 4 General section as there are a few threads about unbricking your Nexus (if that is, your Nexus is bricked and not dead), I'll try and find a few links for you now.

*edit - Ok here's a few links, I'm going to have to do them one at a time though as I'm on the phone!

No, if I plug it in to the PC it doesn't see it all.
I read through http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/tutorial-how-to-unbrick-n4-t2347060
but I don't think it will work because I can't get it to boot into any mode I've tried.
If you're running Windows 7 go into Start->Control Panel(view by large icon for ease of use)->Device Manager and go to Action and scan for hardware changes with the Nexus connected just to be certain that it's just not being detected properly in its current state.
Also there was another guy with a very similar problem that managed to fix his (does require dismantling the phone, but it's not too complicated)

Thanks for all the help, I saw another similar thread about the battery, but since it was about 50% when I shut it down on Friday night, I didn't think about doing it. I guess it will be the last shot. I have one more day left of time off from my knee surgery, so I might give it a go tomorrow and see what happens. I'll let you know how it goes.

Giving thanks using the 'Thanks' button is always appreciated!
I hope the surgery went well and that both you and your device are up and running soon! If there's anything else you need don't hesitate to ask

Asking for thanks is kind of gauche. If it comes it comes

It may well be, but nobody seems to thank anybody without incentive on this forum any more :sly: I know this from experience, I've been here since the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 days!
*Edit: Ahh they were the days, with developers such as @nobodyAtall and @doixanh !

@jgill33 : try charging it for some more days.... perhaps its battery is having problems.
No way, I just fanboyed way too hard then @doixanh, where have you been for the past 2/3 years?

OMG!! I just got done doing the battery thing and it worked!! The odd thing though is that the battery was no where near dead. I only charged using that method for about 10 minutes and then it restarted the phone with 30% battery. I have no clue what the problem was . . . but I think I might take this scare and upgrade . . . maybe, lol.

Brilliant news mate!
If anything I'd say put a new battery in there (£17~) and you'd have peace of mind in the fact that it will be unlikely to happen again any time soon, plus you'd save anywhere upward of £150 on buying an upgrade!
