TrevE mod Wifi Tether - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have used the same settings for this app on the S3, and Note 2, however it fails on the Note 3. Anyone know what settings to use to get it to work?

I'm not sure man, I was using on my n2 as well but I assumed I needed to be rooted to run it on the n3, I could be wrong, that's just what I assumed but then I read about people using the Foxfi app from the play store and it working great so I gave it a shot and it's done good by me so far, however I haven't ran it longer than about an hour so far. And the only trick to get it working is once u download the app and turn hotspot/tethering on, you will get a pop up saying u need to set it up with verizon or something along those lines, DO NOT hit cancel, instead just push the home button and you'll have mobile hotspot working. I use it to give wifi to my nexus 7.2 that's installed in my dash of my car and I run Google maps n music all the time. So far so good, but like I said I do need to give it the test of time still and see how it holds after a few hours of use. Hope this helps ya maybe? I agree though, I'm Def a fan of the TrevE mod wifi. It always ran fantastic.

Yes, wifi tether / treve mod needs root. I am currently using it with the S3, waiting for GN3 to be delivered. In the past, I would either post questions on wifi tether forum or email the development team, which generally resolved any issues that arose. Maybe someone already has it working on another carrier? Should check ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint GN3 forums

Im sure the settings probably just need to be configured slightly different from the N2 to get it to work! TrevE is my go to tether app...the stock hotspot sucks imo.

bump... I'd like to see this working too. It's nice to see how much data and what speed you are getting. I have yet to get WiFi Tether working on any variant of Android 4.3 though.

You don't need any apps. configure wifi hot spot then turn it on. A Verizon pop up comes up about wifi hot spot subscription, don't press cancel. Done.
Cancel turns it off the hotspot, just press the home key and that's it.

It is my experience that Wifi Tether has always been more stable than the Verizon app, I get constant drops with it.

Gingerbread wifi tether for root. DX

Has anyone noticed that if you try using wifi tether for root, it will enable both wifi tether for root and the built in Verizon wifi tether when you turn it on. Im stuck at work so I haven't been able to test tethering to see if it works or if it sends you to the Verizon sign up page.

P.s. I also notice that the Verizon tether app tells you to sign up at att's website. I thought that was interesting.

Yeah I remember reading about the at&t mistype on a few of the blogs. Maybe wifi tether for root just needs to be updated for GB.

I can confirm that Wifi-Tethering works and does not send you to the Verizon sign up page. I'm on the Gingerbread pre-rooted.
That's good to hear. When you turn on free wifi tethering does it also turn on the built in tethering or no? Both icons pop up in my notification bar when I turn it on, I wonder if its just my phone.

Is there anyone else that can confirm that wireless tether works. Im still having issues. I get sent to the Vzw subscription screen even after cycling airplane mode on and off.

I am having the same problem.
Wireless tether and 3G Hotspot Icons both in the notification bar when I turn on Wireless Tether. When connected to my Xoom and open the browser I get the VZW notification page telling me that it costs $20/month. =/
A solution would be awesome.
If not it looks like I am gonna have to SBF back. Dammit man!!!
I am looking for a good thread on SBFing back, any suggestions?

There's an issue on the developer's google code page for Wifi Tether. From the log that's posted, it looks like one of the system calls was changed in gingerbread. (Just an observation from my limited knowledge)
I tried 3g Mobile Hotspot built-in app and my 3G icon just repeatedly disappears. After turning off Hotspot, I still don't have a connection and have to disable/enable radio to get it back or reboot.

In the log that's posted on the link I provided you see a lot of this:
Code:
getsockopt for multiport failed strangely: No such file or directory
It makes me think that something was changed in the system that causes it to start 3G Mobile Hotspot when firing up Wifi Tether. A little googling reveals this:
Code:
The getsockopt() function manipulates options associated with a socket.
So I'm guessing the appropriate sockets are not getting created or modified correctly for tethering to function properly and somehow the 3G Mobile Hotspot app is triggered. According to MDW and whatnot, the Hotspot app is supposedly prepatched but 3G drops repeatedly for me, so something is amiss. From what I can tell, 3G Mobile Hotspot is no longer an app even though it shows up in the App Drawer, if you try to remove it by dropping it on the trash on LauncherPro, it tries to remove Settings. It looks like tethering is just built in now.
I mostly understand what you are saying.
But my next question is how long til a functioning tether? Is it even possible since 3G hotspot is now built in?

T-Mobile USA blocking wifi hotspot

Been using my Google provided wifi hotspot feature since the n1 including up until about an hour ago when I got the pleasant message on my laptop screen that in order to use my phone as a hotspots I need to pay T-Mobile $15 per month. Anyone else have this happen and are there any known workarounds? Running bugless beast pixel edition.

There is a similar post in the HTC One S forum with a fix. Just added a new APN with nothing but epc.tmobile.com in the config and it seems to have fixed the problem......for now anyway.
Just got throttled again with the new apn settings. Looks like it may be time for a clear card.

damn a day late. Called Tmobile and after talking with customer loyalty just ended up paying for it. They did however give it to me for $10 instead of $15 and didn't make me extend my contract. I will probably end up getting a clear card for internet now and calling them back to cancel the hotspot feature. Good to know about your fix though.
happened to me too, running stock rom, i'll try the name change method later

4) Where is says Router name (SSID): I change the original name.

Is that what you meant when you say Change the name of your wifi h.s.? If not I could use a little help. Thanks
Well its now happened to me.
I'm running Mark V ICS ROM with CM9 and used Barnacle... was tethering my laptop then all the sudden I got the txt from T-Mo about adding or be blocked... so I scrambled and try to find device manager to freeze it...buy can't find it anywhere. Now I got a message saying my tethering is blocked.
Does anyone know what system app or process is reporting? Like I said...I froze device manager in other phones and it worked...just can't find it on this one

changing your settings won't help to work around throttling.
apparently you need to stop using chrome as your browser.
I read somewhere also, that tmobile can't tell you are tethering if you are on a mac.
EDIT
{Seems that it is false that tmobile can tell if you are on a mac, but it does appear to be true that tmobile can tell when you tether if you use the wrong browser in the device you are tethering to. So it doesn't matter if you change your settings or you get a different tethering app - just use a safe browser}

Still no work around? Its not about the throttling... its about using the hotspots feature and the data we already pay for and something built in ad a feature of the phone.

I just got the tethering block after I installed Google Chrome on my laptop which was weird so I went back to using internet explorer and I'm not blocked. I gave the Galaxy Nexus running stock 4.0.4.
I'm using AOKP ROM Build 37. I just tethered Wifi Hotspot to my A100 tablet, it's accessing the internet just fine using Boat Browser. Other apps connecting to the internet just fine too. Wonder if only the stock "T-Mobile" ROMs that have the tethering blocked.
I personally think it's unethical for carriers/providers to charge extra for mobile hotspot. After all I'm paying the 2GB or 3GB or 5GB so I should be able to use it.. Hope for a class action suit against the carriers for such unethical practice to gouch more money from the consumers..
Edited: I use ROM Toolbox and change the DNS on the tablet to Google DNS for it to work. The default DNS did not work.
Use Safari in Mac
I am using Nexis One for more than two years and yesterday I go the t-mobile hotspot message. I initially thought maybe I am over 1GB and they are doing this. After reading this thread, I changed the SSID and tried with Chrome on MAC and I still had the error. I tried with Safari on MAC and I can use the hotspot. I am writing this using Nexus one hotspot with Safari on Mac.
I was pretty pissed when I noticed that they did this yesterday with my G2. C'mon T-Mobile, this is an old phone that isn't going to get the bells and whistles of ICS. At least you can let us have this! I'm running stock but am now considering moving to CM7. Does anyone know if WiFi hotspot works, with chrome, using CM7 on t-mobile?
I'm also wondering if it has anything to do with the browser agent. In remember being able to change a browser agent with desktop chrome and Firefox through an addon. Does anyone know how to do that with tablet chrome? I only know how to switch between mobile and desktop but that doesn't appear to make a difference
Well..I got hit about a week ago and was blocked..funny thing...I flashed a new ROM and when I tried it again..I used internet explorer...was blocked....then I tried FireFox and boom. I'm back on
Running a week now on new ROM and using hotspots tethering for my laptop and my wife's iphone. Kids iPod and daughters iphone and still running strong

[Q] Does Wifi Tether TrevE Mod not work on ATT S4, stock rom, rooted?

Ever since the G1, I have used the Wifi Tether app, which is now known as Wifi Tether TrevE Mod. Now Ijust upgraded from my S3 to the ATT S4, however seems it doesnt want to load up the tether, just starts with errors, checked various setup methods and a few threads that offer advice. Tho the one that talks about tetherprovisioning.apk is talking more about the built in hotspot, not the rooted wifi tether way.
So was wondering, anyone else have a stock s4 for att and is able to the wifi tether treve mod?
I usually like using this thing for when I want to make an "attwifi" hotspot so the 3DS can do its nintendozone thing. =)
Edit: Ok forgot to check the main website for updates. So just did that and went from the 3.2 beta 2 to the 3.3 version, however still no joy here, still saying starts with errors, cept NOW it wont show logs, just says doesnt exist. Not sure but I am gonna keep playing with this.
Bump. Anyone using this one still or actually managed to get it working?

@scottguest11 didn't say that - he only said that FoxFi seems to work well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49558391&postcount=5
Try the app "Tether Setting" (noboru) - this relies on a bug in the VZW hotspot app where the hotspot starts running even though the nag screen about not having signed up for a paid service pops up. The trick is to not press the "cancel" button when that popup dialog appears, but to navigate away from that by pressing the Home button. (Also, this app requires few privileges compared to FoxFi)
This works for MJ7 - I don't know about MJE. If you have MJE maybe you could give it a roll and report back here.
[Edit] I just stumbled across this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2564777
while looking for something else. Kinda suggests that toggle hack won't work on pure MJE ... but there is a framework mod available. Might just be a better idea to cough up the $8 though.
I'm using Foxfi, but I've noticed that while tethering to my iPad, it seems to be able to only use one app at a time. I usually play Spotify, and it pauses anytime a notification pops up, and it also pauses if I use any other app. Not happy with it at all!
I can't seem to get it to work. Will the free foxfi work at all? I have no problem with paying the 8 but the free won't work so i don't wanna get it and it not work. I also tried noboru WiFi settings with no luck.

FoxFi works smoothly with MJE. Paid version of FoxFi.
As of the 26th Verizon blocked the app again, now the folks at foxfi have to find the way around again to make it work agai, well at least thats what im experiencing

I just tried Foxfi on my note 3 and its's still working for me. I don't like how it shows tethering when I going to settings and check on the data that I've used though. So I'm not using it anymore. Looks like I'm going to root and either install a ROM which I really don't want to do, don't want to hassle that crap. So I'll probably do the little script change or line change whatever it is that allows the hotspot to work.
Never mind my last comment, I deleted the app reinstalled and working fine again
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
Yea foxfi works on the free or paid version and it is working on MJE. the only difference in the paid and free is that the free only lasts for 30 minutes then it turns off and you just have to go restart the hotspot
Found a different app that costs less, and works without the various steps like foxfi.
Doesn't seem to have a widget, takes some time to load the app, and turn on the wifi tether, but works well.
On updated 4.3, MJE, rooted.
Program is called wifi tether router - fabio grasso

1. You can't do it if you are in the area of an AirRave
2. You must have "CMDA/LTE" selected in the more mobile networks options. ---Although, once you are done and back in the area you are staying in and don't need a hotspot, choosing CDMA only get's a MUCH better signal.
Then yes, the GalaxyTools app will work.
If you select CDMA only do you still get 4G since you are not selecting LTE?

Ok two questions are you doing a Profile update after you run the program? If so you are rewriting the modification and that will remove the ability to use the tether hence the statement that you don't have a data plan with tether message.
2nd Do you have a Airrave? If so you CANT USE the tether with that running, also if your towers are not running well in your area you will see the lost data connection at times, simply turn the tether on again or your local towers don't have the capacity to use the tether at this time. Which leads to the question have you used it anywhere else other then where you have tried to use it now? (i.e in a location with better towers)

looks like the sprint version is Not working dated 11/26 ?? Did you go the tmobile route? Can you explain which route you went to Root the sprint version?
I initially tried the spring method and when it didnt work i ended up flashing the tmobile version. Im guessing this tether thing doesnt work because of the towers around here. Although the sprint coverage map doesnt show it working here, i do get the spark icon at the top. I hadnt been updating profile or any of that other stuff, it just doesnt work even in cdma only. Im sure somebody will make a rom soon that will get tethering working
