so a couple times now I've had the notification light start blinking red when i've had no notifications. is this telling me there is an error or something? subsequently I've also had it it flash green after getting a text and clearing the notification, it just wouldn't stop unless I opened the stock messaging app which I don't use anymore and have the notifications turned off for.
my main concern is the flashing red, usually have to restart it to get it to go away.

Umm I think it flashes red when the phone is on the charger. Have you looked in Settings/Display/Notification light. Click on the Notification Light and it will open another screen.
Make sure your notification for text isn't set to repeat, for me that setting causes ghost notification, if your on the default out of the box settings cycling the phone a few times, power on off a few times and try that.
yeah I know it's red when charging but this is off the charger. Also I'm rooted and don't use the stock messaging app, I use textra, the notifications on the stock app are all turned off. I do have led colors set for different people when I get texts though, but like I said I had no notifications when it was flashing. Hasn't happened again yet but I'll keep watching.
I found something useful! I was getting these "phantom lights" and it was only doing it for my gmail app which I had set to pink. I found out that it was doing this when I got an email that was not in the primary inbox (i.e. promotions tab) It will not give a notification but it will still blink because you receive an email.
Hope this helps someone

Thanks for posting this! I thought I was going nuts as the damn light was blinking and I could not figure out why. I figured it out just this morning as I was looking through my list of Gmail "folders" that I had received an email in one of them. Once I cleared that the light stopped.

I believe it flashes red when you are at 20% or below in battery life. Was your battery life in that range at the time?

seems to be random colors now and only happens when I'm in my car and get a text. I'm thinking it something to do with textra and my texts coming in through my ford touch system. when I first connected the bluetooth it asked if I wanted messages sent to the system and I said no, but it did it anyways. I'd actually prefer to turn this off but there is no way on the phone I can see.

Hi all,
i have a question about notifications :
How long notifications such as a received text messages disappear from the notification bar?
I often have to go to the Friends of the widget to see the new sms icon in green, after 1 or 2 hours that i cant use phone and notifications disappear.
Tnx to all
Notifications normally don't disappear until you're explicitly read them or cleared them. Text notifications should still be there even if you restart your phone.

thanks for the reply, but I still have this problem with the notifications in the bar, as if there was a deadline in time, perhaps some setting?
maybe because i installed the ota 1.72?
I also find the notifications on this phone to be haphazard. I'm sure the light notifications clear after a short time. I've missed several important messages as a result.
I will monitor this more carefully since I am not 100% certain that this behaviour is actually happening -- but I think it is.
Just got this phone last week and same here. Notifications are fine for everything except SMS. I sometimes dont get:
a) A Notification of a new SMS.
b) the messages icon on my home screen, doesnt show a new text count, with a green circle and number.
When I go into messages, there is a new sms or sms's.
Im running 1.75.110.2
and kernel 2.6.32.21
Its a pain.
Concerning the no SMS notification, it's a known bug since the 1.72 update. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887098 .
I've concluded that SMS is a disaster on Android in all respects.

OK. I have been monitoring this for the last few days. I can now confirm that the notification light goes on when I receive a text (SMS) message but it does not stay on. So, if I don't notice the light at the time, I am unaware that there is a text message waiting for me.
I presume that this behaviour effects everyone running the 1.72 update.
I see a lot of questions about multi-colored LED, but none helpful to me. However, I apologize in advance if I missed it, and this is a repost.
Anyway, I was wondering if there was a "hack" or app that would allow the notification LED to show multiple notifications. Right now, if I have an unread text, it only blinks purple, regardless of whether or not I have a missed call, or Google Voice message as well.
Is there a way to set it up to alternate colors? So it would alternate purple and green if I had an sms and Google Voice message, or alternate green and blue if I had a Google Voice message and missed call?
Any help is very appreciated.
Thank you,
-Rex
Try blink.

Hey, I was wondering about this myself. I tried Blink, neat little app however, it looks like the Droid X's LED only comes on when the screen is off. It would be cool to have the LED continuously blinking until you address the notification. (unless there is an option to change it?)
I did not know the DX has a full array of colors for the LED until I installed this app, I will use it regardless
handcent allows you to customize ringtone, notification light, vibration pattern, and theme of texts. i HIGHLY recommend using handcent instead of the stock texting app. just make sure to turn off notifications in your stock texting app or else you get two notifications per text.
On my nexus 4 the notification led only seems to activate for SMS messages and glows white.
It does not flash for Emails (I use the Email app not Gmail) or missed calls.
Is this normal or is there a setting somewhere?
Try using the "Light Flow" app to control your LED lights. It works great. You can pick how often the LED blinks and the color it should use.

I get all different colour notifications depending on what app I get a message from without using any 3rd party app.
I've never used the email app unfortunately but seems as though missed calls doesn't trigger the LED. The notifications I know work are:
GMail - Set to white
Whatsapp - Set to green
Facebook - Set to blue/purple can't remember which
SMS - Set to white
I would've thought the Email app would just use the default white notification but maybe it doesn't have a trigger for it?

Before using lightflow, facebook, whatsapp worked for me, nothing else did. not even the notification whilst charging the battery.
After installing lightflow, all sorted except facebook, whatsapp!
Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks guys, I have just bought Light Flow and all seems good.
Now have notifications for Email, Missed Call & SMS

I don't use either of those but did you try adding them to lightflow? I'm pretty sure you need to specifically add non system apps to lightflow.

Is possible to disable the Gmail green led notification but still get the icon in the status bar for new emails?

Have you tried unchecking the "Missed LG Emails" option under Notification LED.
I'm not sure about that but I use light flow and thats how I disable the led for different gmail accounts and still get the icon in status bar.
I have that unchecked and still get the green led flash for new Gmail messages. I have used light flow in the past and liked it. I tried it on this phone and it didnt seem to work properly. I had the led disabled for Gmail in light flow settings but it still flashed. I suppose because notifications were turned on in the Gmail app itself.
The other strange thing with light flow on this phone... In settings, I have notifications in order of whats being used first. Even though I have them both turned off, google now and gmail were at the top, indicating that they were on.

For gmail setting, same thing happened to me but then I digged deeper and I think inside the gmail notification settings in light flow for that specific account there was an "inbox" option I entered and disabled it there. I also have "Missed LG emails" off.
I don't get led notifications when I get texts. It works when I get Facebook notifications or other things like email. But not text. Anyone know how to fix that? Without 3rd party apps

Using Samsung's messaging app my LED notification is blue and pulses every 6 seconds approximately. In Settings > Display I have the LED indicator option to "On". Then inside the messaging app click 'More" in the top right hand corner, then click Settings and make sure Notifications are "On". That's how mine is set up and LED is working fine.
