How committed to open source is Omni? - Omni Q&A

For example, will Omni just say install photosphere or use an open source app like Focal?

If omni distributes it, it will be as open as is possible. There are some unfortunate limitations, particularly due to hardware drivers, radio, modems etc... Blame your OEM there
Part of omni is about choice, and while you have the choice to use Photosphere, it's very important to offer choice - hence free and open source implementations of as much as possible are always encouraged

Actually, not really. These sources have been available from the start; these packages are GPL licenced, so they HAVE to be released. This isn't too much of a help.

I disagree. For newb's like me who go back & forth between the two OS's its very helpful.
I will admit to spending the majority of my Touchpad time to android though.

I'm really curios. How does having source code help a self proclaimed newb? That's an oxymoron. By definition, a newb doesn't possess the knowledge to compile source code.

He means roms that are created by developers who will openly implement user suggestions to add/improve the rom. He wants to know which developer will do such a thing.

I'm sure every developer is open to suggestions, but developers have a view of what they want in their work. It's all about discretion. I feel like this thread is going anywhere....

Well, I believe the creators of Paranoid Android and AOKP are very community driven and would open their ears to good ideas. CM team are also great. However they dislike dirty hacks and like to stay stock as much as possible. :good:

Right now, if you can make the device run AOSP well, it should work fine with Omni

If your device runs AOSP (or any derivatives for that matter) then you can compile and run Omni on your phone.

I understand that. I'm asking something irrelevant to that.
Ah ok. Yes, it will be possible to make it "officially" supported. It will take time though to get to the stage where this happens, as a lot needs to be done first with the sources to make it ready

Test Build of OmniRom for i9300

Hi Guys,
I just found out that @Rebellos has shared initial test build of OmniRom for our beloved S3 (i9300). Just thought of sharing with you.
Currently Bluetooth, GPS and FM does not works. I am downloading now. Will update thread with screenshots after installing.

For the first time using an AOSP based ROM, I could see Cell Standby consuming the longest state in battery details. The battery graph was pretty flat over night. The ROM feels minimalist and light on resources. The split window feature is nice, need some tweaks to make it perfect though (rotate the window to top when it is taking keyboard input to ensure the contents are seen). Overall, I would love OmniROM to remain light and clean with only those features that truly add value.
From i9300 perspective, we have most (if not all) the major developers involved in the OmniROM project, I can expect only awesomeness to come out

Received email from them today, but no apk.
Dear Jolla Launcher tester candidate,
Thank you for your interest in the Jolla Launcher Alpha test program! With over 13 000 requests in, we are positively overwhelmed by all the support from the community.
Although we hugely appreciate all the requests, the number of testers for the Alpha phase is limited to 600. This is to ensure we can handle and act upon all the feedback we receive. If you’ve been selected as one of the first 600 Alpha testers, details will have been sent to you in another email. If not, no worries as the Beta phase is just around the corner and you’ll be invited to be a Jolla Launcher Beta Tester.
Please follow the tag 'jolla-launcher' on together.jolla.com to either report your feedback (if you're in the group) or to follow the progress of the Alpha testing. For the reporting, please stick to together.jolla.com, so that we can better handle all the feedback.
In the meanwhile, keep an eye on more upcoming news on Jolla’s global market expansion - we can't wait to announce that!
Thanks again!
Best Regards,
Jolla Team

What android version do you have? It might not work on Android L. (I have a mod installed to switch soft keys appearance to that of L's, so don't get confused by that.)

Well someone was going to do it sooner or latter. If they really wanted to limit testers, then they should've picked people from their own company and made them sign NDA.
