Why not just leave gps enabled? I doubt you would notice any difference in batt life.

^^^This. I've left GPS on 100% of the time on my last 10 Android phones, and it has literally zero effect on battery life. I've compared with it off, and with it on, and both give exact same results. My wife didn't believe me either and she tried and got same results as well and keeps it on all the time now too. If anything, it actually helps battery because your phone isn't randomly trying to pull network location all the time as GPS overides priority location (if I remember correctly).

Here is my thought.
I live in Florida, and if a hurricane comes and knocks out power, I would like my cell phone to be able to send/receive e-mail/text, and phone calls. I don't want ANYTHING else to function like Facebook, Words with Friends, etc. to conserve battery life as much as I can.
Is there an easy way to do this in an emergency situation?
Freeze all the apps since you want email you cannot simply turn off data. Also note that there is a good chance power will be out to the cell tower near you as well. Generator power only lasts so long.

In an emergency situation you turn on airplane mode and toggle it once an hour or once every few hours to get messages. Power might be out for days, so you don't want data on all the time as its a waste and you prob don't need texts and emails immediately.

For that situation I would buy a car jump starter and use that to charge your phone.

You would just need a charged car battery and cigarette lighter charger.

You know it would be cool to have an app where you choose certain apps out of your app list to be frozen and unfrozen on command. Like a widget clicker or even a status toggle. Just an idea.
Also just curious but if power get knocked out wouldn't that kill the towers as well? Or do they have emergency batteries?

LOL I know I can do this, but that process seems quite complicated. I was wondering if there was a simpler way.

If I am going to do this, wouldn't it make even more sense to just shut the phone off?

Titanium Backup has widgets that will do this.

Damn if he ain't right. How do you set the filters?
Keep in mind your TWS % is a big factor in battery drain. Also, if your area gets a direct hit, you most likely won't be able to call out. Texting will still work.
I know this from experience during Katrina. Anyone in the 504 code was SOL for calls, but text and direct connect still worked.

i was going to suggest this app. Juice Defender has preset power save options, it runs balanced by default, u can go up to advanced to save more battery and extreme to save alot of battery. You can also set up a custom plan to shut down pretty much everything but what u want.
I just updated maps today and noticed that it is REALLY killing my batteryblike really bad!!! Anyone else have this issue?

Hello,
I have had the same issue on many android devices. I believe that it stems from the "google now" application, which isn't even really well implemented on the GS4 anyway.
You can make it use less battery by turning off GPS when not using it, or if it really bothers you, you can always turn off location services.
What I have done is turn off all the cards in google now that use location, so things like weather, traffic, photo spots, public transit, etc...
This has helped my battery life a lot, more so on my Nexus 4 than my GS4, but still helpful nonetheless.
By the way, Ins't the GS4 the most kickass phone ever? xD

If you have root access on your phone I would suggest this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155737
it will hibernate apps and save you lots of battery life.:good:
The number one thing killing my battery in the settings menu is Google services.. How is this possible. The screen isn't even number one.. Has anyone experienced this being the main cause of battery drain? Is their any way to fix this?
Do you have sync enabled? Thats the name in the battery stats for your phone syncing accounts

Well that was simple. Thanks.
My new S4 searches for GPS location every 10-15 seconds for some reason. Can I find out what app is doing this, or does anyone know why it does it? Thanks.

Do you have GPS & all location services enabled? Or an app that has location services enabled? Also how can tell it is searching every 10-15 seconds?

I do have all that enabled, yes. And I know it because the GPS crosshairs show up that often.

Download a battery monitoring app (I HIGHLY recommend GSam Battery Monitor) and see what is using your GPS signal.

It might be smart Wifi. Go into your advanced wifi settings and turn it off. (It uses GPS to determine when to look for wifi)
I believe you may have a user app running in the background that is constantly accessing your location. Kill user apps one at a time until the gps indicator stops flashing or you may find the culprit by checking the permissions of recently installed apps.

I have GPS on 24/7 and it doesn't drain my battery. I've been averaging one day with 3hr + on screen time. It must be an app draining his battery this bad.

Thanks! I think smart WiFi was the ticket.
So I was just trying to check how good is my battery life with juice defender. And I found out this Wake lock, this is showing that my phone have never been sleeping, does anyone knows if this part from the juice defender or an android system Wake lock?

I think that's the radio, and it might just be there because it has to be. Might also be other apps causing the radio to be active constantly, though.
Although I don't actually know anything about this (besides that RIL stands for Radio Interface Layer), so I'm probably wrong.
I'm having the same issue, and still can't figure out what's causing it. If you figured it out please report back.

Thats really weird, have you modified the kernel at all? you should try to reinstall the rom fresh.
Nothing modified or tweaking at all, Just complete stock kernel coming from Hyperdrive ROM and I still getting excellent battery life. Weird
