hey guys, this phone looks amazing and it's extremely cheap, I'm thinking about buying it. I have a few questions though:
1. what's with this whole pinch to zoom delay thing? for me it looks like it's extremely annoying, is it really a feature or just a bug? can it be fixed?
2. as an arc s user I'm very concerned about available RAM memory. In arc s you have like 180mb of free RAM, which is pretty low, you can't multitask at all, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. How does it look like in Nexus 4? how much free RAM is available for user?
3. I've heard the phone is getting really hot after a while of using it, is that true?

1rst answer: don't have that issue on stock.
2nd answer: nexus 4 has 2 GB of ram. Yes it can multi task. Its got 4 cores so yeah it can handle up to 8 tasks hyoer threading.
3rd answer: Yes it can hot. That's if your surfing the web, playing games, checking emails. All phones get hot when doing that. No phone ever stay cool if you heavy using.
The nexus 4 does have poor heat contacts but when rooted and configured with the right kernel set up,you can significantly reduce heat.
thank you for reply
this is the bug or feature I was talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwCdNxDZwe0
You can find someone complaining about everything on the internet, don't put too much stock in those kind of reviews. Pinch to zoom is fine for 99.9% of us.
2gb RAM, you'll be fine
And yeah, the phone gets hot with prolonged use. But its got a giant fast processor running a huge bright screen, that's to be expected. Again, a very small minority have problems, the vast majority of our phones are fine

The bug you're talking about only affects the chrome browser, you won't see this using the stock AOSP browser or any other.
Also about the phone getting warm on stock it gets hot/very warm switching to other kernels the nexus 4 gets lukewarm at the most
After having the Note 3 for some time, would you buy it again today?
This is assuming that a Note 4 was not on the market.

No I would not ....I wanted to love this phone but I just can't. The camera is hit and miss ...sure it can take some really awesome pics but it also takes some bad ones. I normally have to take a few pics before it looks good. The GPS in mine is horrid. It will lose signal mid route. The Knox pop up is getting old fast. And last when connected to WiFi it will randomly pop up and say its unstable when its not.

I have not experienced any of the issues that were mentionsd in one of the posts above. You must have a faulty handset.... my note 3 is amazing, it makes every other smartphone seem awful. I have had so many people stop me to say how nice it looks. And the camera is wonderful, never had any issues in photo quality. This never ever lags, EVER. So you can feel confident in your purchase. This will be a future proof device for some time.

Yes, without thinking.
As far as issues above:
1. camera is great for the phone, need to know limitations and workarounds. I had misses with $3000 DSLR. Maybe low light could be improved in next update little bit, but I really try not to take pictures in low night, they'll look bad even on $100000 night vision camera.
2. GPS on mine is fantastic, I get lock inside the house my dedicated GPS could not dream off, perfect tracking in city canyons
3. Never seen Knox message after first couple times, not sure if it was "don't show for 30 days" , or something else I did, should know in about 1 week. It was meaningless anyhow, something like the messages about WiFi networks available everywhere, yeah I know they are, but I have no password.
4. I had Note3 WiFi issues despite GS3 and laptop working great. Updating router firmware fixed it once and for all, yeah, I couldn't believe either it was that simple and why was the router set not to auto update, no idea.
I actually wanted rumored Note3 active, that's probably I would go for, if it finally show up, instead of Note3, otherwise there is pretty much nothing else with all the features.
I'm on the fence
I love the phone, but the message app is laggy.
Worst part. I feel like I'm still with Apple, waiting for a jailbreak. Buying the ATT version was a mistake, (but I didn't know any better).
locked bootloader, wth! I certainly picked the "worst time" to switch to Android, (always chitty luck for me!)

Absolutely. However I should note that I have had my device for less than a week at this stage
The only thing I really dislike is the Knox bit. I wouldn't mind rooting and putting a custom kernel on it, but alas I cannot, and not willing to sacrifice my warranty at this stage.

I realize you have to know limitations of the camera... That's why I shoot with a Sony a65. When I want to take a pic of my daughter and I don't have my sony I have to take multiple photos because it won't focus or she will be blurry because of slow shutter speed... The indoor (low light) pics on the note 3 are down right horrid. Like I said I wanted to love the phone I just can't. The GPS is the main reason though as I absolutely need it for work.

Carrier branded phones are stupid in general - your mistake (somewhat - also ATTs mistake for locking bootloaders)
Get hangouts and enable SMS in settings, use it as your message app
That's the beauty of Android - even though personally the stock messaging app is flawless and fluid on my handset despite tons of SMS messages.
I bought 2 for my wife and I, and we'd do it again in a heart beat! Love this phone! What a great upgrade from my Atrix, only thing we miss is the finger print sensor for added security but since no one has made a good phone with a finger print scanner...
I'm a media consumption whore and the screen is perfect, speakers get the job done too, clear and loud. 3gigs of ram and a 2.3ghz quad core processor!!! My phone might not be x86 but it's still faster than a lot of computers out there.
Battery life is amazing. With my atrix is have to charge it every 5 hours but the note 3 lasts me all day on heavy usage, and I do mean heavy! Videos and music and data. Thanks to greenify and wakelock detector I've been able to set up my phone where it can last what sends like a week on standby. Seriously overnight it only drains 5% and that's with WiFi, Bluetooth, etc left on

I see so many posts with people gnashing their teeth with anticipation for the upgrade to Kit Kat. I have to ask: Why? Most of the features that we experience are no longer in the Android OS but in Google Play Services. Google does that on purpose so that we, the users, can get upgrades to features without relying on the OEM or phone carrier. The Android OS has become the layer that talks to the hardware.
I've had Kit Kat on my original Galaxy Tab 10.1 for months and don't really notice any features that aren't on my Note 10.1. In fact, with the changes in the way the XD card is handled in Kit Kat I'd think that one would want to avoid it for a while until that's resolved (if ever).
I don't care about the actual android version, what I'm looking forward to is bugfixes and performance/stability improvements to the OS from Samsung.
Like the screen shaking for example. Needs to be fixed imho.
In short: I'd rather have a perfect 4.3 than buggy 4.4!

Kitkat is optomized to run on lower end hardware leading to great speed and stability increases on high end hardware. More stable faster and smooher. Can't argue with that. And Google does that so they can still say android is "open" while controlling our experience all the same

I agree with that. I installed Kat Kat on my S4 recently and biggest change I see as a user is several of my apps are broken because the new SD Card limitations in Kit Kat. Depending on your priorities you may be better off with 4.3

I see no speed difference with the S4. Rooted S4 with 4.3 is just as fast and same battery life. No exaggeration here, since really do not see a difference. It is already fast.
Seems the only marginal way to improve speed would be kernel level. My Note 2014 is peppy already too.
Apps open as instantly as could be expected and smooth performance.
hopes for kitkat is mainly for their new optimizations for the tablet. korean's 4.3 latest patch increased our tab's performance greatly, unfortunately the US model doesn't have as much luck.. yet. i hope to see kitkat and wishing that their optimizations will make this tab manage memory better, the stock apps working smoother, and overall touch wiz integrations becoming more fluid.

While you might not see a difference personally most people have reported a significant speed increase between 4.3 and 4.4 on every device. When hacked 4.3 compared to 4.4 it might not be as noticeable but hacked 4.4 blows hacked 4.3 out of the water. Of course it might not be so in your personal perceptions

Unhacked S4 4.3 vs unhacked S4 4.4 is about the same performance-wise. It looks like they may have sped up the animations a bit (but I could have done that myself before). By the time animations finish and screen finishes redrawing is about the same time.

Multi-user support is on my Note. But I won't use it. When I used it on my rooted Tab 10.1 it slowed things down and consumed battery life. Unless you absolutely need it, say for kids, then I'd stay far away from multi-user.
I'm hoping for a better integration with bt keyboard, I rooted my device and installed an app called blue tooth keyboard monitor so it doesn't drop the connection after 5 seconds now but I've seen a lot of other people with the same problem and samsung referred by complaint to a product specialist so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a better solution

interesting I have a Logitech k810 which I've tested with my s3 an iPad and an asus transformer with no loss of connection, I've seen people who say it could be a h/w problem but since the performance has improved since rooting and the addition of the bt app I was hoping that it isn't a h/w issue especially since I've already rooted it I've tried changing every setting possible
Any update would be welcome in Europe. The performance boost and the multiuser support of MK1 are still USA only for most users.

Its fine for you not to notice a difference. Most of us however notice a major dofference between kk and jb. Its a matter pf perception. If you were happy already you wont notice it as much if at all. We notice it instantly because kk is much much smoother.

I agree (on the S4) kit kat is much smoother (which I think of as: more consistent frame rates during the animations, lack of stutter). Most of the apps loaded pretty quickly in 4.3 though and I've not noticed much difference with those. Some improvements I have noticed: some apps that were particularly laggy before (S. Memo, Dialer (when switching to and from contacts), and Calculator) are zippier now.
I've also noticed that there are some improvements (not performance-related though) in the way the email app handles exchange accounts.

I have to agree with the poster who also responded to you.. I was using a cheap "Poetic" keyboard initially and it would drop connection all the time. Since then I have switched to a Kensington keyboard and the connection stays solid all day every day. Paid more for that keybooard too, of course.

So it sounds like I possibly do have a hardware issue, which is strange because I thought that if the bt antenna didn't work properly I would have no connectivity at all. Actually the first thing I did after trying to change every setting possible was to buy another keyboard (that actually cost less than the Logitech k810; which I believe to be a quality product ). Unfortunately I had the same problem with the connection dropping after a short period of inactivity. I've read just about every thread on xda, and have yet to resolve the problem, so I may be stuck. Since I've already rooted my device I doubt there is any chance of returning it, at least not very easily. hmm?
Well I picked up a Note 12.2 (black/32GB) Friday and well have some mixed feelings considering the cost.
1. Need to root for more multiwindow apps
2. Chrome performance is still lacking - Googles fault, not Samsung's but figured raw performance would address it.
3. Really hate the physical home button and cap buttons more then I even thought I would. Why Samsung thinks this is a good idea beats me!
4. Really don't like that everything is scaled up in size for the larger screen. I realize it's the same resolution as my Nexus 10 but a DPI setting would have addressed this. Just makes it feel cheap and like it's for old people or kids. Need to root to change DPI...
5. Seems Samsung took big step backwards on some S Pen apps. The demos I watch for the previous Note devices work much better and more streamlined then on the Note 12.2. Really not sold on the S Pen and think mine is going back for a Tab Pro 12.2 if it's released soon otherwise maybe just a outright return.
6. Seems really stupid they hide the menu button under the multitask button (long press). I know many apps have a menu button but for those that do not this could really throw off a person who is not resourceful. This is the kind of crap that backs up the idea that an iPad is easier to use.
7. Definitely some random lag. Why does Samsung need to over bloat everything. stock Android fits in like 300MB and TW Android is like 8GB!
8. Very limited development activity!
I probably have more to say just not coming to mind yet. If I keep it I simply have to root in order to address the DPI and multi-window apps. It's an expensive device to give up warranty on... Only on day 3, we'll see how the next few go...
Totally understandable. Takes a bit of contemplation when the price is this high before deciding to root.
Having owned a Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the past, I knew going in though that there was no way i'd be satisfied with out of the box Touchwiz. I also knew that I wanted certain applications like Titanium Backup so I basically knew I was going to root from the moment I handed over my credit card to the cashier.
Good luck on your decision.
Thanks for the review it's a shame Samsung screwed this up. Had huge potential. Their latest products are not very impressive. I think you just made my mind to get the new Sony z2 tablet.

Its not bad at all. .. Just a lot of money for something that is not near perfect. I thought about a Z2 buy really wanted a 12 inch tablet. Root will address mammy issues and Google improving Chrome performance will do a lot. I'm pretty sure I'm taking the note 12.2 back and getting a tab pro 12.2 as $100 is to much for the s pen unless you are going use it a lot. .
I feel the same about the bloat. Really, my only problem with the tablet was TouchWiz. I plan to root within the next few days (as long as I'm still enjoying the tablet). I, for one, ONLY got this for drawing and writing.

This thread reminded me that I had bought button savior for another android device that I had so thanks for that. Currently using button savior with root and liking it. Nice to have home, back and menu buttons within reach now.
Well after using my Note Pro 12.2 for week+ then trying my Nexus 10 again you really see how much better this tablet is. Decided to keep it, hopefully I'll find some value out of the S Pen. Just rooted it today so it's getting even better as I apply some tweaks (DPI, Chrome user agent, freezing apps, enable more multiwindow apps).
Had one for a few days...
Really nice screen size, like the larger fonts/UI as they are, easier to read and use compared to an iPad.
Disappointed in poor gallery performance showing 2560+ wide png images very slow render times.
Lag is still seen browsing the Web, eBay seems to bog it down . 8 cores and 3GB ram... Why?
PDF reading with EbookDroid improved but still short of Goodreader on the ipad.
Preferred the older gen of a snote, f (x) input / wolfram now gone.
Price given the issues above seems too high.
Too big
So I have had the Note 12.2 for a couple of days and all I can say that it is too big for me as a daily tablet. I will give it few more days of use and than decide if I'm going to keep it or not.

1. No you don't there is an app for that.
2. Chrome sucks on anything. It literally is the worst. Dolphin and others can sync with desktop chrome and dolphin supports flash. You lost all credibility the moment you complained about chrome.
3. Samsung intends for it to be used mostly in portrait they are nice when used with a keyboard. But its ok to dislike it
4 . It's a bigger screen of course they made things bigger. It makes sense. If you want a smaller launcher use a different launcher. Or just root and adjust your dpi. Buy a third party protection plan like square trade and you dont have to worry about your warranty.
5. The spen apps have gotten better. Look around the forums. Many people had the old 10.1 and upon switching hated the new ones but have come to prefer the new apps. And if you "arent sold on the spen" why the #*@% did you pay extra for it?
6. Google has been pushing to get rid of the menu button. Samsung and some chinese oems are the only ones that still have it and samsung is the ONLY one that gives you the apps button and menu button. All apps should have an overflow in kitkat and samsung gives you this. 2 ways to get to a menu!! Dont you feel lucky!!
7. This device does not lag period. Ive only observed very slight jumps in graphics (the drop down bar almost exclusively) it is extremely smooth out of the box even before rooting and disabling apps. Your whining about a minor easily fixed graphical complaint (force gpu rendering and disable some bloat, no root required) which apparently ruins the entire tablet for you. As for bloat everything has bloat. When was thr last time you bought an LG phone or an iphone or hell even a nexus. Just so you know STOCK ANDROID DOESNT COME WITH GAPPS!!! So even nexus is bloat ridden. Samsung adds alot of functional applications. Most of the "bloat" is actually extremely useful if you are a business minded person. And you can disable alot of it. Just root and uninstall!
8. It is a 750 dollar 12 inch tablet with identical specs to a 500 dollar tablet and similar to some 350 dollar tablets. What do you expect devs (most that do this as a hobby) to just go running to best buy and grabbing it up? Also you keep complaining about rooting but you want dev activity which would mostly require root. Are you serious? Your like a bad tech reviewer that just found out rooting exists and cant device to hate or love it. If you want more dev activity buy another one and give it away to your favorite developer.
So in conclusion you dont know why you bought this tablet (Im thinking "ooh its big and shiny!!!" Had something to do with it) you didnt read the forums to see that the spen apps have been improved or that many of your complaints (ui lag and multiwindow apps) could be easily fixed, and your bipolar about rooting. I suggest you return it and purchase an ipad air. It might be a bit closer to your level.

Already rooted and the a different launcher (already using Apex) only adjusts the launcher icons, not overall DPI. You say of course... Well I disagree! To maintain a constant experience they should have adjusted the DPI. Bigger screen should mean more real estate, same size icons, not bigger everything!

5. The spen apps have gotten better. Look around the forums. Many people had the old 10.1 and upon switching hated the new ones but have come to prefer the new apps. And if you "arent sold on the spen" why the #*@% did you pay extra for it?

Well at the time the none pen (tab pro 12.2) was not available. Since you seem to think you know everything I would think you knew this. I had 14 days to return this and tab pro 12.2 was release within that time but I decided to keep the note. Wouldn't say I'm still sold on the pen but I plan to keep this tablet for at least 2 years and I'll get some use out of the pen. Will improve resale when I'm ready for the next tablet so I figure it's costing me about $50 premium which is really not that bad. So there you go... That is why the #*@% I got the Note instead of the Pro Tab 12.2.

I have no idea what reality you live in but I have plenty of apps that don't have the menu button overlay and all tablets that use the on screen navbar buttons will show a menu button in the navbar when needed. You can call it what you will. I don't like Apple/iCrap anything but my point is that this can cause confusion for an inexperienced user (not me) and I'm sick of hearing the argument that iPads/iPhones are easier to use. This oversight by Samsung back up that claim for inexperienced users.

Samsungs ROMs contain a ton of bloat in the ROM code, it's not just the apps that take up the extra space. I know what stock Android is and that GAPPS needs to be loaded on ROMs like CM, AOKP, Paranoid, OmniROM. Been using these ROMs about as long as I have been using Android (@ 5 years). You can sit hear and defend Samsung all you want. I have had an S2, S3, S4, and the Note 12.2. Every single one of these device had some lag. It's not that big of deal or I wouldn't continue buying Samsung. I just really thought the raw horsepower of this tablet would make it smoother. My almost 2 year old Nexus 10 is smoother overall in the GUI, no question about it! The 12.2 clearly has more horsepower and I clearly see that in several apps I use that require a ton of processing power.

I've rooted every Android device I have ever owned. In addition to the list of phones above I've had a few other makes of phones and a few other tablets. I don't have an issue with rooting at all. Both my S3 and S4 were rooted the same say I got them. It was simply a little harder to root a $800 device with the understanding that it would void warranty. So I waited a couple weeks until I was sure I was keeping it and to ensure there were no hardware issues with the unit. So according you your response I guess it's not ok to state that there is limited to no developer activity. There you go again running your mouth. I'd guess you are some spoiled kid who been taught no respect. To be clear, I bought this tablet for two reasons. First, I have been waiting a year for the next generation of tablets to replace my Nexus 10. Second, I have wanted a larger tablet and no one else makes a 12 inch tablet.
So in conclusion I don't know what your problem is. I posted up some good honest opinions on this tablet. You obviously don't think Samsung can do no wrong. I don't use Apple products but I'm not too childish to respect what they do right. I have never owned a iPad but do support a few of them so I'm not oblivious to how they work and compare to Android tablets. I couldn't care less what you you think about my credibility. You clearly have a personality disorder! Already using Dophin w/flash (generally only for flash sites). I didn't know it would sync with Chrome so I may look into that although Chrome beta does perform a lot better then stable Chrome.
Wrong, it's intended to be used in landscape. The wouldn't put the buttons on the bottom (holding in landscape) if it was meant to be used in portrait.
Sorry typo on my part. Meant landscape lol

Yet that doesn't change the fact that Samsung is the only company giving you menu function at all does it? If it was a nexus you wouldn't have any sort of menu key. At least you have one. The ones I find most often that don't have overflows are emulators. This is because devs haven't updated their apps to include them.

I don't see the lag. It is a matter of perception. I have used a nexus side by side and feel the note is just as smooth. I'm not defending Samsung. I make 150 dollars an hour at one job 962 dollars in 8 hours at another (typically ends up around 1500 a day though) and 8.50 an hour at another (keep it for the discounts.) Although I don't work in the tech field. I don't have the attention span for it. Love technology but coding is incredibly boring and tedious to me. More just bringing it to your attention that it was kind of a whiny post. It's much better now that you have described in detail your grievances. Oh and yes I DO have a personality disorder. Kind of. I have aspbergers. A form of high functioning autism that manifests itself in social skills. I am very bad with social cues such as body language lol. I would rather be be alone than with people usually. Sadly my girlfriend doesn't agree. It is often found along side ADD. I also have that. It's OK though. People with ADD are typically very bright (which I am) That being said I intended to be a bit offensive. Your post was written In a way that got it very little attention. You get more responses ( I wouldn't have been a jack*#@) if it had been written just a bit differently a list of a problems will get nothing more than a return it from most people. Especially when you answer your own problems ( Rooting was a great solution) Good luck with the dpi change (I love adjusting apps individually instead of system wide) and I sincerely hope you enjoy the tablet for the next 2 years. I will.

I am eligible for an upgrade in just a couple of weeks. I love my S3 so naturally I would like the S5. However, like most of you on here I am heavily into modding my device. I just wanted to see what everyone thought of the phone without root. Has it hindered your usage much? Would you still recommend it without root?
Note: I'm not trying to discourage the community, I am sure this phone will see root eventually.

If you're highly use to root, I would not recommend. If you aren't, I would. There are so many online ads and formatting issues with Kit Kat while browsing. Force to zoom and text fit is not working in all browsers. Nor Flash. Each of these work, but not all in the same browser it seems. I've probably tried 10 but prefer Boat for its customization and navigation bar. And if a feature works in one browser, I find those browsers aren't as highly configurable, so you're having to sacrifice a few things to achieve another within a browser. Come to think of it, all my complaints are internet based. So perhaps its not as bad as it sounds. It really is an awesome phone, but my device has been like a desktop computer in my pocket for years. I feel severely limited at this point. Also the sd card thing is limiting. I don't have the right words to describe, but basically it makes you have to utilize its own file browser for the most important jobs. I can no longer sync music and videos to my sd card off the bat. I can only sync to internal, then move. I don't think that My Files is very user friendly compared to my default file browser, so its time consuming to do all this shuffling to my 64gb sd so I can view things as I need and want to utilize them. Lots of bloat, but most can be turned off or hidden thank goodness.
But as I said before, terrific phone otherwise. Battery is tops. Touchwiz is fine. Screen is excellent. Easy to hold and feels sturdy and not easy to drop. Fast charging. Satisfactory phone all around. The chrome part is cheap looking to me, but oh well. Less fingerprints than s3. Nice features and hiccup free. Just stifled where it counts to me. People who aren't use to having options, still have them where it matters. I've happily been able to sideload. It's just taking some getting use to.
Thanks for the complete reply. I cannot believe you can't sync music from the SD card, that is insane. Wow, I also forgot adobe flash doesn't come stock anymore. I usually flash a stock rom such as CleanROM to streamline and kill the bloat. Some key things I use root for are: long press volume key to skip music tracks, gesture controls, titanium, root Explorer, adblock, and for control over my CPU speed.
I'm considering the M8 for root but I am rough on my phones and know the glass screen will shatter. I love the form factor of the S5 more and water resistance is a major draw. I just wish I could do something to help with the root effort.
Also, Chrome browser gave you trouble? What do you use to play music? I use poweramp

I don't have the S5 but I'll give my reasoning for not getting this device. In my option, Android is great because you are given control, but when a phone is locked down like this then it's no better than an iPhone. IPhones are meant to be locked down so that's expected but android phones are meant to be open and let users do what they want with it. I really dislike Samsung giving into Verizon and AT&T, therefore I refuse to support their decision to continue their policy of locking down their devices.
As for the htc one, I love it and this is coming from a hard core Apple user who's going to get into iOS development. Plus HTC offers a free screen replacement within the 6 months for your concern about the screen. What ever you decide, I hope that you become satisfied with your decision.

My apologies for the novel. First of all, I want to explain why I did not get the rootable HTC One. After I got the S5, i made a trip to Verizon to check out everything I'd be passing up. The closest contest was with the HTC One. I was impressed by the G2 but wanted to see if the G3 would have sd card expansion and be comparable size to S5. When I held the One and S5 side by side, the screen size was a significant size difference. Also, the M8 was taller. I'm a tiny person, so the S5 barely fits in my pocket as is. A larger device for me personally, is not realistic. I'm not going to start carrying a bag or bulky belt clip just for a phone. Secondly, I have many years of training in photography. While I understand a smartphone will never be an SLR, the photog in me wanted a device that I felt was still comparable in most ways.
Chrome is fine as a browser, but that's where the desktop in a pocket comes into play. It cannot run flash. Its not highly configurable. No navigation bar and useful shortcuts. No add ons. If I force to zoom a webpage with a large ad, it zooms the ad in as well thereby taking up valuable screen real estate.
I use Player Pro for music which is great. But I can no longer sync using Doubletwist. I drag and dropped my Music folder/Playlists via cable to make sure it went directly to my sd where I wanted it. My favorite video player no longer reads the right aspect ratio of my films. Many apps are playing catch up to Kit Kat and its limitations/changes. So I find myself using various video players occasionally. One has better sound than the other and so on and on.
Oh, and this is just a nitpick, but the Menu button has been replaced with app manager, the same feature you'd get when you long pressed home on S3. The button will still function as a proper Menu button if you long press it while inside an app though. So that's good. Otherwise you access Menu through the Navigation bar or via the 3 onscreen dots.
I miss Cleanrom so much! Both M8 and S5 seem to test well in drop tests. But its all relative. Everyone I knew with S3 had broken screens. I dropped mine so many times, including concrete with no kinda protection and it never cracked other than the plastic corners. Some of the built in gesture controls have been eliminated, so best to inquire about which ones you need. Several off the beaten path "features" are gone as the were deemed too gimmicky, even though people still appreciated them. Firefox has an Adblock add on and Flash works with it too. The force to zoom is not as magnified as Chrome. I can't recall seeing a working text to fit in any browser, but I may be mistaken. RIP Titanium and CPU speed for the time being but I think this thing is fast.
Oddly enough, I just got Root Explorer and my default file explorer to perform tasks it wouldn't do before. So maybe all is not lost there. I'll need to research this one further. I'm pretty sure it wasn't reading my playlists off of micro sd before...
On S3, I kept device on powersaving, but powersaving on this phone causes it to hiccup too much. I still get at least 15 hours or so with several of those, 3-5 hrs screen on. Speaking of which, GPS is different too. I do keep it on Powersaving as having it completely off inhibits certain location functions now. Haven't used long press to skip tracks in years, so unsure how to even set that up anymore (got it to work through Player Pro settings but only with screen on). You are right, the form factor is great. Would have preferred it a little shorter, but my understanding is they made it as small as they could.
Good luck with your decision. I paid full price for the first time ever and have an upgrade coming in November. If we don't have root by then, I may consider my options. Some things are getting easier by the day though. Just have to adjust your expectations a little.
I drop my S3 at least once every day and I have one small scratch on the screen after 2 years. As for the M8 replacing a cracked screen once , that's nice..until it cracks a second time. I run my S3 on powersaving mode as well, it is disappointing to hear the S5 hiccups on it, especially since CleanROM would probably fix that.
What I'm taking away from everything you've said is that it's a truly great phone but not quite great enough to make up for no root. Thanks for your input, I will probably hang on to my S3 until root or a new release.

This is my first Android phone not unlocked and rooted, it is a little annoying but I am still extremely satisfied with it. It pisses me off that I pay $600 or so for a phone and I am limited to what I can do with it, but I am on the other hand grateful for the security! And hoping and praying that our devs won't let me down, and we have root soon!

I have always had root on all my phones but with this of course it does not have it. But where that is a big con the phone is amazing in the power and battery use. The camera is so big of a pro for me I can give the devs time for root. Becouse for me I can wait for that. I used root mainly becouse the phones I had did not have the newest Android so for me this works for now.

Coming from the S3 myself running different ROMs including Alliance TW based ROM. I love the S5 and don't have many complaints about not having root. Although, I do seem to have issues copying files from internal sd0 to external SD card. Other than that I haven't run into anything that made me want to root it yet.
However, when root is available I WILL ROOT ASAP!

Pretty much this, have fully customized SIII and when I can upgrade in July I will probably pick up the S5. Hopefully by then some stuff happens with root. I don't mind about custom kernels but root is important so I can remove bloat, ads and recoveries.
The choice is tough, buy a S5 with removable battery and storage but no root. Buy a HTC with root but no removable battery and storage. Coming from a Droid X2 on release and getting the S3 on release....The S3 has spoiled us.

IMO, 4.4 sux butt on all devices without root due to 'Goople' killing external writes. They truly suck butt. Using the lame security excuse is like if Windows killed external writing for apps. How would consumers like that?
I just got mine yesterday. I am coming from an S4 on TMO with unlimited LTE..... A) having to keep track of my data usage is going to be a challenge but at least I'll have coverage when I need it. I rooted my S4 and Note II before that the moment I got them home. I have not used a TW based ROM in two years. I thought not having PIE controls was going to be the death of it but the 'Toolbox' feature is pretty darn good. Now it's all the ads. I never realized how many ads there were!!! Holy Crap, I think the ads are going to eat all my data!!!! I have 13 days left before I can't take it back, but on Verizon, I don't see another option short of the S4.
