Graphics tearing with custom kernel - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys! Any nexus s users out there? Holla!
I own this phone now. Anyway, I installed franco's kernel on Slim Bean 4.3 weekly, and got the graphics 'tearing' that we all know and love.
I found a solution here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45640961&postcount=2426
...which probably everyone knows already. But I didn't, so I decided to post here to share the fun!
I guess this isn't really a question, I just posted it in case it helps any other noobs (like me) on this device. Also so I can subscribe to it in case I forget the solution again in the future.

whats up @bedalus ! how have you been?
yea, the screen tearing issue is widely known, so is the fix. if running a jwr rom, and a jss/jls kernel, youll get screen tearing. there are 2 fixes for this. first one is the simplest, go to the dev options in the main settings and disable hardware overlays. the second fix is eady as well, but can come with a price. the 2nd fix is a flashable that converts your jwr rom to jss. this fixes the screen tearing, but also gives you the chance to experiance the "keyboard" lockup that happens on jss roms.
or, you can run jwr based kernels on jwr roms without issues. and franco has jwr and jss kernels availble, just flash the right one. and of course, jss/jls roms with jss/jls kernels are fine

Hey buddy! Still fighting the good fight I see! Love your photography on g+ btw
You know... I tried rascarlo's Rom and liked it, but I lost root immediately somehow and gave up because I'm too dumb/pressed for time. Then I went cm 4.2.2 for a while... tbh I'm pretty fresh here and don't know my arse from my elbow yet. Any tips or links you consider required reading?

thanks! many people rag on the n4 camera, bit its a great camera if you know how to use/adjust a camera.
yea, i flash the supersu zip every time i go into recovery, just in case with rasbean.
links i dont have any off the top of my head. its pretty similar to the gnex. psx is a good jwr based rom. viper4android will make your n4 sound much better(its a root app in the playstore. description is in chinese, but the app is in english.
but, if you do have questions, feel free to ask, ill answer them as best as i can. btw, nice to see you here

It's nice to be here. Els (the missus) has the old nexus s, so it's still getting good use. But it's nice to have a competitively modern nexus. Thanks for the tips, I'll take a look soon. Stay simms22, as they say

ok, this new kernel rocks. SZ .2.0 Is up on my website for download and for voting and it's on the graphs. Amazing results to say the least. Most significant battery changes in a long long time. Closest to 42 on linpack ever. They just released a .2.1cfs so I assume they forgot something in the .2.0's. Usually that is what happens when they release a .x.1 right after a .x.0 So I will update the downloads accordingly. But I know that the .2.0s perform bugfree for my everyday use. Maybe it was just the SZ governor they forgot to merge again or whatever, I dunno, I'll look into it. Enjoy the results.

Wow, great work, that's a lot of info in there.
Are you planning to test some of the non-sense kernels? I saw somone post a quadrant score over 1700 with the MiUI test rom, would be interesting to see some of the AOSP results.
awesome work man... its gonna be great to see everything side by side like that
one question tho: no love for the AOSP kernels?
edit: apparently I have been beaten to the punch
looks like King's # 6 is the best all around...
from what i saw....i could be wrong
yeah, AOSP kernels would be great to see data for compared to all of these 'almost the samey' kernels.
and I'm back from work lol!
Yeah aosp kernels I am going to do add in next. I just tested snap with turbo, and LOL omfg 2500 in quad is insane.
Linpacks didn't go up though, so it must not have been dalvik vm optimizations. I wonder what turbo really is.... hrmm
And yeah, on sense roms i use kings 6bfs as my daily driver. Error free, smooth as silk, and lightning fast, all with amazing battery life.. Kings 7bfs and 8cfs had some really weird problems and I wont touch it. It was jerky as hell, didn't score well. I tried several wipes/reflashes/redownloads, etc. without resolving it.
very nice!! thanks for the contribution!
ive been doing the same thing charting rom (with and without custom kernels) development progress from 2.1 stock all the way till now with fresh and netarchy.
Its just fun to see how fast the phone has gotten through the months since release.
Dunno if and when i'll get the time to illustrate the data, but its been my little side quest too!!
cheers homie.
Can't wait for the AOSP kernel results! nice work!
Great work. However, if I may offer a suggestion, please add the stock kernels so we have an idea as to how they compare?
I too would love to see a comparison to stock. I haven't made the jump to a new kernel yet, but I want to soon and this thread is great for helping me pick which one.

Everyone always asks what the best kernel is, or what the differnces are between them. I decided to spend a month or so testing stuff. I made a webpage where all of you can view the differences. I will of course be continually updating the page with new kernels and hopefully new tests as well. There is my contact info on the page, and you can just pm me here also if you want. Of course I put up a donation link, don't flame me, it just takes a lot of my time to do this, so I figured if anyone appreciated it and wants to donate then my kids can certainly use the diapers lol.
Enjoy the data everyone
More info is of course available on the page. I will be gone for the next hour or so and then I will be able to respond to everyones questions/comments. Thanks for looking,. I suck at making webpages lol.

Nice work man
We all appreciate your hard work and contributions.
Htc 6 and 7 kernels added in the mix! Eat it up peoples. It's easy to see why 7 has everyone praising it over battery life. It has an extremely low idle power draw, and that is what most people's phones do 90 percent of the time anyways.
will someone please send me the 3.29 kernel from the new OTA? send it to [email protected] or [email protected] and I'll have it on the list tomorrow. FPS Unlocked straight from htc??? ZOMG they listened to evo owners WOOOOOOHOOOO!. This should lead to some interesting hacked versions of it. They fixed the battery life, and now this. You'd think they care or something lol.
super impressive, i just rooted a couple of my friends' evo's this evening and this was super helpful. I'm on cyanogen but they both wanted to stay with sense. will definitely donate on payday, hope you get the aosp kernels added in.

Unofficially Official Rom

OK I have been reading threads in this forums and I'm sorta lost and annoyed. I read a thread saying that an official update for ICS can brick your phone so you need to do a full reset or something like that. I am confused as to why an official release 'might brick your phone' and I 'should proceed with cautions'. An official release of any OS should be stable and shouldn't cause such issues right?
I am pretty upset that ICS is still yet released for Galaxy Note, not talking about the prototype but the full software and still with the prototype it is 'risky' to update. Honestly I don't bother with custom OS, I prefer official releases and just have it rooted but now I am looking towards 'PARANOIDANDROID' rom, though I haven't flashed it because I'm waiting for it to be updated (so it can play MP4 and other stuff) but still its released faster than the official full ICS and has several features the android people should have added in the begining that are not added to ics. (Only one thing is PA doesn't have SNOTE which is kinda essential to the phone and I don't think the devs will add it) So because of this I also find it really dumb that our warranty is voided if we flash a custom firmware.
I am really confused as to what is happening and am I wrong at some part, can some one explain and post your thoughts about this topic. My point of this thread is just to ask about the 'may brick your phone' part and to see what you guys think about this entire thing with android and their prototypes instead of official releases and cfw. I truely blame android's (or samsung) latesness in releasing the OS for people opting for custom roms than sticking to the official ones. Android really has so much potential since it is 'open' unlike iOS but they are not bringing their A game to the table.

I don't understand the whole thing but it's really scary and i'm now afraid to flash a CFW and i really wanna avoid bricking my phone. Can someone explain it more clearly, from what I understand if we flashed ICS leaks and flash back from recoveries we are bound to have issues??? Am i wrong, can someone explain??
AFAIK.... paranoid rom is cm9 based which is perfectly safe... so worth taking a shot...
Im on paranoid rom too... working great... going to try the updated version tonight
we are on the same page mate...
i prefer stock + root/cwm.... i really dont bother with custom rom...
and this bug is the biggest troll on gnote
thank you kvsandeepreddy for clearing up my doubts, I flashed v1 of PA but lacked a few stuff and am so glad to see v2, but I doubt you can play mp4 files on the stock video player as android needs to release their source code and I really need that feature and hate other players, but anyway hope they would fix it all soon and port SNOTE (which I don't think they will but I keep saying it)
musashiro, I suspect you are still on GB like me and honestly I don't think it's worth it waiting for Samsung to release ICS, first they don't have an exact date for the full release and even if they did release a full update now, PARANOIDANDROID has soo many features that ICS lacks and won't be added.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662802
You can check this page out, it is the ROM, it's super cool and it's screen shots looks promising, also PA has both tablet and phone mode. I find it hypocritical when Samsung promoted the NOTE as a 'Phone? Table?' and force us with a phone mode indirectly making it a phone and making us the same as other normal phone owners when we clearly aren't. So PA sorta fixes it and gives us both phone and tablet mode making it truly a 'Phone? Table?' allowing us to chose which mode we want.

And regarding the s pen and others it is not possible because they work only in touchwiz framework and the pa rom is based on cm9 which has nothing to do with samsung.... u can try an app called papyrus beta whic is far better than snote....
Personally i hate the official ics and dint even use it for a day...

I already currently use mxplayer, but I use it to only play .mov videos that I take using my iPad or iPod that I keep on my phone (home movies). I prefer the stock one as it has options for proper resize of videos and looks nice without ads. But thanks anyway for the suggestion and I will checkout papyrus, just hope that at least papyrus allows for proper backup, hope I enjoy PA just as much as you do (you seem like your having the time of your life with it)

It's OK but from screen shots PA looks much more enticing than the stunner and since additionally you advised not to flash it now I will just stick to PA but Supernote looks cool, there is always something in every ROM that I want.... if only there was an ultimate ROM with everything.

Yea I guess your right, hard to please everyone. The entire aosp and aokp and others really confuse me but honestly from what I have seen so far, (alot of YouTube demos of roms) PA looks the best and the PAD on it is a big deal but I decided not to flash v0.2 yet and wait for some more updates as people are commenting on issues with battery and something about SD and internal cards being switched or something and other issues. I really want that rom but the issues people comment about are pretty crucial to be fixed especially battery so I guess I'll just wait for a more stable update. Is it wrong to say v1.0 is a real release and 0.2 is still beta??

Do you guys want an updated ICS build, what kind?

Exactly what the thread title says...
As most of you should already be aware I have a gingerbread build that I try to provide something close to a monthly update on (plus or minus a few days). What I would like to know tonight is if y'all would like something similar with ICS?
Just like the gingerbread builds this won't have a lot of progression and I won't be trying to really create anything so much as compile y'all something (hopefully stable) to use if you so choose.
Assuming the answer to the first question is yes, do y'all have a preference for the build (cm9, aokp, etc)?
A release candidate of CM9 would be nice or if there's an ICS rom of ParanoidAndroid, then that would be great as well, I like having proper tablet UI for apps.
Has hash already updated his CM9 kernel?

Every enhancement
the sg7 enhancement, linaro, supercharge, oc'ed kernal
and nothing else.
Base it on the least flashy ROM. I want to change, and add in things as I see fit, and I want the most basic version of android to do it from. I want it the fastest it can go, so all the enhancements and nothing else added in.
You can port sense rom to our Kindle???
All of the roms I have tried have these really annoying bugs. In the ROM I have now, the WIFI keeps dropping, even when i'm in the middle of a download.
If you guys can make a simple, stable ROM without all the bells and whistles (swipe left, themes, etc), that would make me (and a lot of other people) very happy.

With a little bit of tweaks I'm pretty sure we can use the newer JB kernel (they're both 3.y based but the newer one has the working charge indicator and screen driver.

This is sort of where I was already leaning; was considering basing something off of the loosethiskin builds that TWA was providing before cm10 but I wanted some opinions first as just like my cm7 rom I won't be the one running it (I'm using cm10 and it's going to remain that way)

No; others may be capable and or willing to do this. I personally don't touch binary ports; partly cause I don't want to and partly cause I don't know how to do binary ports (I haven't researched it do to the fact that I just didn't want to do it; source code for me)

I haven't experienced any of those issues but one thing I can point out is wifi issues are most likely kernel related; I'm most definitely not a kernel dev so anything I do will have something close to hashcodes current kernel (assuming it won't work as is)
Hi Sblood,
Funny, I was just thinking about this today, wondering if anybody that's capable is willing to take the time to do this. While I'm pretty much satisified with my JB rom, I really like ICS and I was very happy with twa_priv's CM9 builds.
I watch a lot of video from CNN and that's flash, the JB roms are finally giving me pretty good performance with this but I also like to watch video from ESPN and I haven't figured out a way to get that to work. With ICS, it prompts you to choose a player to watch the videos, like MX Player or Dice Player, with JB, it just tells me that the content is unavailable. That's probably the biggest thing I miss from ICS. I still keep a nandroid of twa's last CM9 release under a different gmail address and update any apps from Play Store every couple of weeks and then I OD on ESPN vids & Flash stuff, tonight I had 17 apps to update. LOL
For me, it's a tradeoff of JB Google Now for ICS ESPN vids and I'd rather have ESPN videos. So, if you could use twa's CM9 build as a base and hook in Hashcode's newer kernels, say on a monthly basis, that would be awesome & most appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike T

Sorry I've been busy and interest actually seemed much lower than I would have expected so it's been a somewhat lower priority.
I would still love to get it done (if for no other reason than we don't really have a stable/buildable version of ICS) but as it stands I've been having a few issues getting the ICS device repo updated to use the current kernel but I have been trying at least some.
I have to remind you it's the holiday season as well.
A good, stable, release candidate ICS ROM? I can see the appeal. I'd definitely give it a whirl. I'm starting to get tired of instability on a lot of ROMs.

That's a joke right; it's been 5 days since you asked this previously, it's still the holiday season and I haven't said anything in regards to something working so it must be I'm just not sure I get the humor in it...
Admittedly I probably shouldn't have created this thread til I had made some more progress but the goal was to find out if people were even interested in ICS in the first place. As I have stated this is still on my project list but let's be serious for a moment; how high of a priority do you really think back tracking to a previous version is? (I'll give you a clue: it's not).
I can tell you this; syncing cm9 and the old Kfire-Android local manifest for it doesn't build (and that's with the old kernel branch), it's not as simple as sync a bunch of folders and compile; I have to actually dig into the code of several repos to sort this out.
Lastly consider that my primary role is as a recovery dev; you know the term 'the plate is full', well I have a platter over here...
Not directly related but on the subject of recovery development; this is where most of my time has gone as of late.
I'd like to see an updated ICS but if it doesn't happen......oh well......I'll wait
.....when you hit the walls of sanity, you have no-where to go.....
Yea I'll wait too. And it was a joke. :c
How about a ROM with similar battery life as the stock Amazon one? Every custom ICS or JB ROM I have tried has not been awesome for battery life. Especially in sleep mode.
I'd like to see a honeycomb ROM that wold be pretty neat

lets be patient and wait for the developers to cook em
we are not allowed to ask for ETAs or requests on XDA. but otherwise, just my 2 cents that atleast JellyBAM will be here without much ado considering its on Galaxy Nexus too. im sure its just that the dev couldnt get hands on a Nexus 4 yet
i guess i shouldnt even write, but boy, i hope it takes them a while. when a new nexus comes out i always enjoy how sane and nice everything is. users friendly. roms fresh. no bull****. and mashup roms are probably amongst the worst things that xda can offer, its pretty much the 9th circle of rom hell. : P
seriously, the conflicts between these three roms, which are different and follow different strategies, are so vast that its getting dangerous. we pulled out completely, mostly because we fear retribution from google which does not take app breaking lightly. the way i see it, what they do abuses our work in the worst way possible. this is not cherry-picking or kanging, this is rom raping and the laziest most uninspired and unoriginal dev work i can imagine. not sure if aokp and cm agree but thats our impression.
its xda, things are open source and all, you do what you want but im telling you, you miss out badly. each of these three projects gives you so much more, if consistency and love for detail is something you value, that is. sorry for the rant, couldnt resist.

Hi all,
I am the developer of SentinelROM, which is one of the most popular ROMs for Nexus 10, Nexus 7, Nexus 4 and HTC One X.
SentinelROM is compiled by me with modified CyanogenMod 10.1 code (additional tweaks for performance and battery life, as well as some theming). So far the ROM has been very successful.
I've decided to release the ROM for Samsung Galaxy SIII (i9300) also, but I need your help as I don't own a SGSIII to test with.
I am reaching out to anyone who would be willing to flash my test ROM and test a few things for me.
If you're interested, please PM me either here, or via the SentinelROM facebook page. I will reply with a download link and instructions.
I only need a few people for testing, so please don't be offended if I don't get back to you with a download link.
This ROM is for i9300 only at this stage, so please do not reply if you own an i9305 as the ROM will not work on your device.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You know I want to, but as you said on FB, probably not a good idea to do it on my wife's everyday phone
Everyone, this guy turns out a great ROM. I have Sentinel ROM on my Nexus 4 and it's very, VERY nice. I highly recommend it.
Thanks for the plug mate.

Well everything is working as normal. I played about with the rom it is pretty stable. Everything works, and when i fell asleep unlike cm the battery never drained maybe about 3 percent drain overnight which is great. So the battery life on this rom is excellent. You're good to go with your rom. Sorry for the late reply i installed this around midnight. Used the rom and till about 2am and fell asleep. I am still using it. I must say overall it is a great rom. Thank you very much. I've not yet found a fault but maybe i might find one but that would be cm related.
For a beta rom this is really stable. Onlything maybe it isn't a big problem now but in the ota updater lol it doesn't recognize the device as MO.
Beautiful!!!
I'll credit you in the OP. Thankyou very much!

sentinel rom v 4.5 for gt-i9300
Hello, Sentinel.
First of all I'd like to thank you for this truly amazing rom, there's so many things I can do with my phone and change almost everything I want to within it. I only found 1 issue which may not be an issue at all, I might still be a bit inexperienced with all this modding stuff, but I haven't found a way to overclock or undervolt my phone using your kernel, but I took a risk of using siyah kernel 1.9.1 which is said not to be compatible with 4.2.2 JB and basically all new roms that are out now, but the funny thing is IT DOES WORK! And I think that siyah 1.9.1 kernel and your custom sentinel rom is the best combo ever for my galaxy s3. The battery works great even when I overclock it, it's really stable and never glitching. I can say I'm a heavy consumer, wifi constantly on, and I'm playing psone games with and emulator alot and it still does a pretty decent job. On my next payday I'm definitely donating, buddy. And in a months time when s3 stock 4.2.2 JB will come out, I'd like to see what you can do with that one aswell.
Keep up the great work, best regards, Lietus.

Hi Lietus. I assume you posted this here because you can't post in the ROM thread, so I'll answer you here
My official position on over/underclocking and UV/OV is discussed on my website. Have a browse.
Sorry but it's not something I support in my ROMs. People are alwsys welcome to use other Kernels to unlock these features if they want them.
Looking forward to payday
Hey, this is my first post, you did a really good job with this rom!
Is there any way to disable the fullscreen keyboard feature?
I understand where you're coming from and I totally agree with you if we users want we can make it ourselves using different kernels especially when your ROM is that great and it accepts different types of kernels. And I've got 5 different types of android machines which could use some improvement so if you're interested and have the time to expand your ROMs through those it would be just awesome. Because your ROM is actually the first custom one I've tried, and after a lot of research I can't seem to trust myself with someone else's
