GPS randomly turns itself on - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my G2 now for almost two weeks and although I love it I've been having a very strange (and incredibly annoying) issue with my GPS.
It started today, took my phone off the charger and looked up the bus times. I pulled it out once I got to work and noticed the GPS was turned on. I thought it was strange but I turned it off only to pull my phone out again two minutes later to find that it had turned itself back on again. I was not in any app at the time.
It happened again after work when I unlocked the phone and checked Facebook it turned itself on while I was using the phone. It happened at least two more times as soon as I made a phone call I happened to check the time and noticed the GPS was on again, at the time I placed the call GPS was off. I turned off only to find it back on again after the call ended.
In total, GPS has turned itself on at least 6 times today (I've lost count as this point) NOT INCLUDING the THREE times it has turned itself on while writing this post - at what seems to be almost 5 minute intervals (although still seemingly random).
here's the kicker, since I haven't installed any new apps in the past few days I don't know what could be the cause of this. in fact, I actually DISABLED location services yesterday (or the day before), further confusing the Hell out of me. in an attempt to preserve battery as recommended with positive results in another thread.
I noticed a similar issue in a forum on another website but the author determined it as the stock weather widget causing the issue. I don't use the stock weather widget, I use the Android Weather widget and specify manual updating in the settings (I click refresh on the widget every time)
This is so incredibly irritating, does anyone have any idea what could possibly be the issue?
EDIT
I noticed my battery is lower than usual today and I just checked my battery usage...Android System has ate a whopping 59% of my battery, it even tells me to manually turn on and off GPS which is what I do!! it says GPS has a total time of almost 11 hours! I have a screenshot but it's not let letting me post it at the moment

Maybe it's carrier iq related? I want to say I saw a thread on here where someone was saying carrier iq kept activating the gps.

I can't stand carrier iq, and I [strongly dislike] that at&t supports and factory installs it.
Is it possible to cleanly remove carrier iq? And, hypothetically, if such a task required root, would be it reversible if I had to replace my phone under warranty? I know the Verizon G2 shows rooted status in system status, not sure if the at&t version does too.

Looks like the carrier IQ issue on the ATT version. Use system tuner to disable the carrier IQ processes. (7 of them. Look up the carrier IQ thread for details)

I'll check that out then. I did a factory rest last night because I was so fed up with GPS turning on (it got worse, much worse) and it seemed to help but I noticed GPS turned on itself twice today.
Do I need root in able to do this?

Yes you must root to use the System Tuner to disable the Carrier IQ.
Another option is to go to settings:general:apps:running:android system: and force stop Carrier IQ and then force stop the android system that Carrier IQ resided in. You will have to do this every time you restart you phone. However, there is no guarantee that Carrier IQ is totally stopped but all indications are that it is.

I've noticed mine gps started doing the same thing today. I've had mine for almost a month now and always had my GPS location turned off. All of a sudden today it keeps turning on by itself. I am with ATT.

I'm on at&t as well and from what I have researched they're one of the few carriers who supports carrier iq. Bunch of pricks if you ask me. This program literally hinders one's phone and service in more than one way, what's the point of having this amazing 3000 mah battery if their malware program destroys it in more than half the time the battery should be lasting? I don't understand, but I digress...

I've been doing this for the time being and it does seem to help. I restart my phone after every full recharge and stop the iq agent process. So far since I've been doing this my battery life is lasting longer and I've only noticed GPS turning itself on twice in that past two days (much better then before!). Also Android System is back below my screen usage percentage, albeit still coming in second to screen usage. My battery lasted 13 hours today with mild usage while at work and then heavy data usage at night (YouTube streaming for about 2 hours) plus local music and other miscellaneous internet usage. Screen time of 3 hours at 35% total battery usage, android system 17% total battery usage and I'm happy to day GPS run time of only three minutes!
I am content with this for now however I do plan on rooting so I can totally remove carrier iq, and I recommend others with this issue do the same if you value your battery life, privacy and sanity (lol). I also plan on giving at&t a (very polite and respectful) piece of my mind on the issue, usage and ethics of carrier iq. I'll report back with updates or if anything else interesting happens.
EDIT
I did install the app Voodoo Carrier IQ Detector and although yesterday it told me Carrier IQ is present but appears to be disabled, today it's saying it's present and active with a detection score of 270 (lower is better). No idea what the score means but it doesn't sound too great. Also not really sure why it is active since I have stopped the process and didn't do anything different from yesterday (when it said it was disabled]. Either way, figured I'd include that.

I disabled carrier iq using system tuner and now my gps NEVER turns on unless i turn it on, and i noticed a huge difference in battery life for the better. Just another great reason to root!

Disable "Android System" that Carrier IQ resided in. Carrier IQ will then be shut down completely.
There are 7 system files related to Carrier IQ and I suspect that some are residing in the "Android System", but they are not visible.

Yeah, my problem exactly.
Android system runs at 50% battery use, while the screen is at second at around 20%.
GPS and Location Detection is constantly on, even though I keep turning it off. This is total bull****.

How much data usage!!??

So, I use netcounter to keep track of my data usage, as I'm sure many others do. My Vodafone contract, that I started a year ago with my HTC Magic, gives me 500MB a month. This has always been plenty - sometimes getting a bit close if I decide to download a couple of custom roms while out the house.
The last week or so though, my usage has SKYROCKETED for no apparent reason.
Netcounter says I've used 302.95MB of non-wifi data TODAY, and it's 9:30am!! I've just woken up! PLUS I've had wifi turned on throughout the night!
What seems suspicious to me is that of that 300+MB only 8.23MB was recieved - 294.71MB was SENT from my phone, between midnight and now, over 3g, when it was connected to the wifi the whole time.
I've apparently used over 1GB in the last 7 days. 90% of which was sent from the phone. I have absolutely no clue what is causing this, and to be honest I'm somewhat praying that it's a glitch with netcounter... otherwise my phone bill is not going to be pretty...
Anyone know of any apps I may have installed that could be causing this? Or any other processes that could have the same effect? As it was so much data sent I thought maybe it was different apps sending anonymous usage data, but switching off all of those that I could find doesn't seem to have solved it D:
I used about 700MB last month...
My bill says 3,7 Gigas...
I tend to use & abuse tethering...
12€ unlimited data plan. Isn´t it at Voda UK?
Check what apps/services are running, could be something going a-miss somewhere.
Seems a bit wierd you had a load of xfer over 3g even with wifi enabled though - maybe try and force 2G only and see what the logging program says then?

Sadly unlimited isn't actually unlimited. 500MB "fair usage" and I think you get charged when you go over that...
As Highland3r says: just use wifi and force 2g only. I use netcounter too, and it says I've only used 3.6mb 3g and 130.73mb over wifi in the last 7 days (only had phone for 5 days actually).
If you think it's a glitch try reinstalling netcounter or something.

I'm in the UK with 3 Unlimited Data Plan (1GB Fare Usage)
I use 3G watchdog to make sure i dont go over and it works a treat, i ALWAYS surf the internet download ROMs and apps using 3G but i havent used much lol
40MB used in the last 5 days, ( i havent downloaded any ROMs for a while though lol)
Maybe u shud try using 3G watchdog at the same time as the app your using at the minute
it will show you if the app is messing up or just confirm that you are somehow sending alot of data to someone through 3G
Same thing happening to me!
Although here in Argentina is much more limited, but I try not to use EDGE, and it consumed 1mb download and 26mb upload.
I don't know what does it upload...
LOL Vodaphone sucks hard. I get 3gb with T-Mobile USA.

If you are using the news and weather widget to display news stories, you'll notice that every single time it cycles to a new story it uses a tiny bit of data. If you've set it to also download pictures for stories, I could see how overnight it could use a ridiculous amount of data.

You wouldnt expect that to upload data though?
Did you try another app to measure and/or killing 3G and seeing if that makes a difference?
It's probably a wild guess, but do you use the Voice Recognition a lot? It send the audio to Google and returns text, so it uploads much more than it downloads.
But I don't think it would be that much.
Well even with wifi turned on, andriod by default puts the wifi to sleep when your phone(display) does to sleep too. So if you had some culprit program running the background, even with wifi turned on it'll still use the cell network by default as long as your phone as asleep.
So... I've been monitoring the usage throughout the day...
Reached about 20MB of data over wifi today, which is reasonable for the amount of browsing I've done on it. At last check (about 2-3 hours ago) cell data was at 0B, as it should be with wifi on.
Pulled it out of my pocket just now - 3G icon was in the notifications bar... thought that was probably a bad sign... 65.42MB 3G data used... 95% sent, 5% received...
ARRRGGGHHHH D:
I never use voice recognition. What the hell is uploading all this data? And WHAT data is it uploading? /:

Sensorly turns itself on if you do any of the following:
Turn on or off GPS
Turn on or off WiFi
Turn on the phone
In addition, when the app starts, it will turn on wifi.
It's a cool app, but if you have GPS on, and it kicks in and you forget to kill it, your battery is down 50% in an hour. It's extremely frustrating that something so useful is so damn annoying. It's almost malware. I uninstalled it from my phone.
I uninstalled sensorly last night... so it's not that.
Might try uninstalling WaveSecure. Pretty sure it's not auto-backing-up anything as on the site I only have the sms and call data from when I purposely told it to back up... but worth a try...
the only other apps I've added recently are...
Gmail Notifier
Gesture Search
Dialer One
that's about it... ):
I had the same issue a couple of weeks back, I was at the point of only setting my APN to the correct value only when I wanted data enabled, usually just for an hour a day over lunch due to it going crazy downloading something. After a week of doing this the issue appears to have gone away and I am back to leaving data enabled 24/7 with an average of 10-15MB per day inc normal useage. From my orginaly post on this forum I was given the following advice to try and track down the issue...

dial *#*#4636#*#*
go into battery history
change the first drop down to "network usage" and see which apps are using the most.

l2_hsic wakeups - finally getting rid of it

i posted this in the Note section since it had a big thread going about this wakeup annoyance called l2_hsic, but as i am using a S2 i should post this here as well (you may remove my posts there if you think 1 is enough, i have no permission to do that yet), its a wall of text so im just gonna quote it:
i too had alot of battery drain without actaully using the phone much, was reaching aorund 2 weeks on stock 4.0.3 but the performance wasnt all that, so i installed Supernexus & DorimanX (extreme_battery), great performance but the battery wasnt really what i expected, barely a week with low usage, tried lots of things while i searched a ton of topics about l2_hsic, using gsm-only with FD disabled, turned off play store notifications in the store itself and market updates in TB, WiFi is only on when needed, data usage is disabled, so is gps since i dont use it, baseband/ril is matching, and disabled stuff in TB/gemini/LBE which i dont use, battery got a tiny bit better but far from the 2 weeks i was reaching with stock (had alot of stuff/bloatware frozen though), i was even thinking about flashing stock again but that was gonna be the last option, performance on custom roms was far better
so it got me thinking, saw alot of l2_hsic wakeups with no appearant reason to why or what was triggering those while i had just under 1%/h drain with all that stuff off, then i remembered the last time i opened the play store before flashing Supernexus & dorimanx it didnt work, probably froze too much in TB but didnt want to get to the bottom of it since i was gonna flash a new rom & kernel anyway
so a couple days back i decided to freeze google play store/services and market feedback agent in TB and block them as wel in gemini (had a hunch they could be the culprit triggering all these wakeups since some autorun lines automatically re-enabled themself after turning them off in gemini, one even was called WAKE_UP lol), denied all access in LBE and then used the phone as i normally would (occasional WiFi, couple calls a day and thats it)
rebooted the phone a couple times the last couple days to test if it wasnt a 1-time-wonder but things stuck and im glad to say im now at 0.2%/h of battery drain in deep sleep, up to a max of 0.5%/h when in use, down from around 1%/h in deep sleep, so it will probably last a bit longer than the stock rom/kernel would have before, great success!
before i froze the store/services/agent i had around 1500 wake counts from l2_hsic on a couple of hours while the phone was in deep sleep, now im at a couple wake counts on almost a day while actually using the phone like i usually do
now, in case i need to go in the store i just have to enable the stuff again in TB/gemini/LBE, little effort imo for alot more battery life

notice the l2_hsic wakecounts are now 16 on a week, where i had a couple thousand during a few hours of deep sleep before i disabled the store/services/agent, this is the stock battery with Supernexus + DorimanX (extreme_battery) on 2G, wi-fi wasnt on this week, and i only make like a couple short calls a day, same as ive always done, yet the store woke my phone up so much i barely reached a week with a full battery before disabling it

TLDR: in a nutshell, after trying all possible solutions to get rid of the thousands of l2_hsic wakeups (in deep sleep that was), it was actually the google play store/services(/agent) that caused it, disabled it, and i have more than doubled my battery life
obviously most people use their phone alot more than me, i make a couple calls a day, rarely turn on wifi and thats it, someone using the store on a daily basis is probably not gonna disable it and reenable it over and over, just wanted to point out how much the store actually drains your phone without wifi/data in deep sleep on a 2G network

It's a pity that gmail/youtube wouldn't work at all after disabling google play services, google play store and market feedback agent.
The data/wifi signal that would usually turn blue stays grayed out. I'll be trying enabling just play services

Interesting, it would be good to see this bug fixed but Google apps remain connected, especially Gmail
and after a couple months the l2_hsic evil is back for no appearant reason, i hit up TB one day with half a battery and it couldnt find the pro key again, so i closed it and thought i'd ignore it, next day i turn the phone on again and my battey is near empty, wtf? enabled google play stuff again, updated my apps including TB, pro key problems solved, disabled the google play stuff again, no luck, l2_hsic is back in full force, disabled all the google apps, no luck again either, but i noticed umts_ipc0 was in there too with just under the amount of l_hsic wakeups, which has something to do with the usb, so i started looking further and it seems a fix for the l2_hsic wakeup bug has already been found, even though its on another device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41338478
only problem now is to have the kernel modders take a look in their kernel and see if that bug is present and if so, if they can fix it?

Stock Android 4.3 'Android OS' permanent wakelock

Looking at some XDA and Reddit posts, small set of users (my Nexus 4 including, unfortunately) experiencing some sort of bug with stock not rooted Android 4.3 after OTA on all range of Nexus devices.
The bug is Android OS holding device awake all the time and not letting it into deep sleep. It looks like it has not huge impact on battery life, but still it is abnormal. Rebooting devices, for me, curing this, but only for a day or two, after a few days wakelock makes its come back.
Unfortunately WakeLock Detector does not show who is guilty, looks like it is in the kernel. I just have bought BetterBatteryStats, and will look at its data tomorrow. What WLD does show is that my Nexus 4 had 0:00 of deep sleep today:

Here is what Android's battary stats looks like:
And here is what is should look like and does look like on my 2012 Nexus 7, that is unaffected by this. And stats looks the same for a few days after I reboot my Nexus 4, before wakelock occurs again:
I have to assume that it has nothing to do with connectivity, because same thing happens even if I disable wifi and mobile data entirely.
Here is a list of topics about the same issue I could found, but they only have questions, not answers.

Unfortunately, I also do not have any answers (yet). The purpose of this post is gather all the info I've found in one place, and maybe rise the awareness about this.
Update:
Ok. I had BetterBatteryStats on my phone for 30 minutes, and this whole 30 minutes PowerManagerService held wakelock itself. So, it safe to assume that it is an offender.
Hi, I saw your reply on this thread.
I read some speculation somewhere that the wakelocks might be caused by the device continually trying to poll for location, and apparently this behaviour could be corrected by the latest version of Google Play Services v3.2.25. I don't see the wakelocks now after upgrading to it earlier today, however this could also be because I rebooted my phone... Nevertheless I'm still not getting great screen-on time, just about 3.5 hours compared to other people's 5+ hours.
What's your version of the app? If you don't have 3.2.25 you can either download it directly (Android Police has put up a copy of the apk, but it might not be a Nexus 4-specific one) or download a more recent version of Play Store and wait for it to update Google Play Services automatically.
I'll report back here if I notice any more changes in my phone.

Location related wakelock are reflected in Android System and Google Services in the Android's battery stats, and as NLP (and some others) in the BetterBatteryStats. They account for about 1 hour of awake in a day. And they actually DO something.
This wakelock unfortunately does not show in Partial Wakelocks statistics in BetterBatteryStats, so I think it occurs somewhere deep in kernel.
If you use Google Now, or some other location based apps like Aviate, 3.5 hours of screen time is great. I do not turn off Wi-Fi, even when it is not available, use Google Now (without location history). 3 hours of screen on is what I expecting as a best case scenario.
Unfortunately, at days then 'Android OS' wakelock happens it nowhere near 3 hours.
So you're saying that location polling only affects "Android System" and "Google Services" wakelocks. Ok, I didn't know that.
But I did note that my "Android OS" wakelocks have now stopped. Although I cannot say whether the update to Google Play Services / Google Play Store had anything to do with it, or whether it was simply because I rebooted my phone. Do you know for sure that Play Services has no effect in this respect?
And yes, I do use Google Now and also Field Trip.
In any case, I'm also noticing that my battery drains at a much faster rate (as compared to 4.2.2) when I have my phone turned on.

It'll help with Google Services drain, I think. Anyway Google Play Services just updated for me (with Android Device Manager), hope it'll fix Android OS drain too. Hope is not high, though )
I've recently have this issue as well with "Android OS". Luckily I can still make it through the day easily but annoyed this kind of stuff still happens. I got the latest Google Play Services yesterday and still have this issue today after a full charge. Will reboot and see what happens I guess.

I've been seeing this on my Galaxy Nexus with AOSP 4.3 as well. It looks like this patch might be relevant: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/andr...mmit/e6771c41e8ae905a616f3fd369d0eacfcd2003b9

It looks relevant indeed. Although, I would not call the drain "rapid". I'm now looking close to my device statistics and try to pinpoint exact moment this lock occurs to find the cause.
If it is indeed caused by concurrent condition in PowerManagerService there is not much to do, but flash another, patched, ROM. But I eager to stay on stock.
Also seeing this with my Nexus 4. Reboot doesn't do much at all for me.
I was having the same problem with Android OS keeping my nexus 4 awake. It turns out the problem was using a wireless charger. If I wirelessly charged overnight my phone would never go into deep sleep when I took it off the charger. I went back to using the usb charger and the problem has gone away. I don't know if you are wirelessly charging but it did the trick for me.

It's documented problem about wireless charger https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/mobile/c4HRzEUNmFk/geRlvQRtSPoJ
Looks like it was there since 4.2.2 and nobody cared to patch this in 4.3.
Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with my case. I do not own a wireless charger and the name of the wake lock is different. When it is related to charger it is PowerManagerService.WirelessChargerDetector keeps device from sleep. In my case it is less specific PowerManagerService.Wakelocks
I have this issue i think maybe going back to 4.2.2
I have the same problem of android os keeping phone awake on my nexus 4 .. I have been having the same issue . I finally dealt with it last night after flashing multiple ROMs and kernels. I went back to OTA 4.3/rooted/twrp and flashed from the updated .84 modem back to the previous .48 modem. Went back to only losing ~4% overnight. The problem appears to be the qualcomm modem driver. Additionally, I am mostly seeing this problem from people outside the US.

What I also tried, that didn't work at all, was stopping all running services during an Android OS wakelock. Even with all the services stopped and the RAM cleared, the wakelock didn't stop at all. So, it means the drain comes directly from the OS/drivers/etc, not any running app. In fact, after 2 factory resets, 1 reflash and keeping my phone completely stock for days, the Android OS wakelock kept occurring. Even if you don't sign-in into your Google account, the wakelock will still be there eventually draining all your battery.
I will have to give the old modem a shot.
So, somewhere here, on XDA, I read suggestion to clear cache (Settings -> Storage -> Tap on 'Cache' and then 'Yes') and then reboot.
I did this on Friday and to date wakelock did not return. I do not know did this really help. May be it was just a coincidence, or maybe this nasty wakelock will return, but this procedure is easy and harmless, so maybe it is worth to give it a shot.
Same Problem
I just got my nexus 4 a week ago and I have been having this problem ever since I got it. It seems to be an issue for me no matter what rom/kernel/radio I flash. I've also tried complete factory image flashes of 4.2.2 and 4.3 with radio and it has no effect on this issue. I am very discouraged because I love this phone other than that problem.

Nothing else on the forums worked for me so as a last chance, i tried this solution and it worked. Well, sort of. I did this last friday and afterwards android OS battery usage dropped from around 25% to 8%. Also in Wakelock Detector, i saw that my CPU was no longer awake all the time. But unfortunately, as of this morning, problem reappeared. I tried to erase cache again but it didn't work.
Is this happened to you as well?

[Guide] Battery & Performance Tips

Just thought I’d put a short guide together on what I think are some things to do to get the most out of your spanking new Samsung S6 when you get it or you already have it. Most of you guys might already know most of this or might not. Just thought it might help some people. This ain’t rocket science but every little bit helps!
Battery:
This is the hardest thing to do because like a fingerprint everyone has a different set up with apps and how they use their phone (wifi vs 3g vs 4g etc) that screen on time will always vary. Also you don’t want to turn everything off and cripple your brand new smartphone just for your battery. There’s a balance.
However here are some general things to do that do help:
1. Install Greenify from the Playstore. I have found this is the number one way to stop drainage. This app will hibernate apps when not in use. It doesn’t stop their functionality at all but hibernates them.
2. Don’t use Google Now. I think it’s a gimmick and does bugger all for me however if you use it it will drain your battery big time. Of course if you love it then use it!
3. Don’t use location services. Another big drainer. Just use it when you need it. However if you have apps that need it then of course leave it on!
4. Use ‘auto’ on screen brightness.
4. Don't use the Facebook app. It's a massive drain of battery. And Facebook is awful.
5. If you continue to get big drainage then download Gsam battery from the Playstore and look at the ‘wakelocks’ – this way you will be able to see what’s draining your battery. As a general rule your phone should go into deep sleep for at least 80% of the time.
This way you should get 5+ plus hours of Screen on Time.
Performance:
Here are a few things only that really do help with speed and performance - even though this phone really doesn't need it it still helps!:
1. Go to Dev Options and change the transition animation scale, the animator duration scale and the window animation scale to 0.5. This little thing speeds up your phone like nothing else.
2. Root* your phone with Cf auto root. And then start debloating. Get rid of whatever you want by downloading Titanium Backup and going into each app and freezing whatever you want. Freezing is safer than uninstalling but does the same thing. Debloating is a must!
*And yes I know the Knox arguments for not rooting but I've rooted every Samsung phone I've ever owned and sold every Samsung phone I've ever owned.
*And yes I know that you won't be able to use Samsung Pay but it ain't coming out for months and there's too much freedom you get from rooting to not do it because of this.
Just an FYI... Google Now does not drain your battery!!

do you have any battery life screenshots of your s6 with these steps done?
This is not untrue advice but it is also not new to this device at all. This is the same advice on android years ago and it's basically saying turn off everything that drains the battery then you get 5 hours of screen on time. Well most people want to use google now, facebook, and location services so that defeats the purpose of the phone. Really there needs to be some serious improvements in battery tech but so far we as consumers are allowing companies to get away with putting sub par battery performance in their flagship phones and we keep buying them anyway. I am guilty of it too but it does not give companies any real incentive to focus on battery life.

Of course if you turn location off but that's the point - it's made to be used with location on which will drain battery.

@poczynek
I have a GS4, and I'm looking to get a GS6 soon.
I have read your post and I am not sure if what you claim will bring any evident increase in battery life at all.
1. Greenify - What does it do? Why should I greenify an app? What apps/services did you greenify to give you an increase in battery life?
I can't say for sure but if I ran my GS4 without disabling apps vs disabled apps I bet the battery life/screen on time would be similar.
However I did disable a whole bunch of Samsung and other bloatware apps that came on my phone because I don't want their bugs or services to be running unnecessarily.
I have a looked at Greenify to some detail and thought to myself why bother? All of the services and apps that are running are fine...why would I need another app "Greenify" to manage something that is native in Android which is to simply disable bloatware apps.
Please provide a real example of what you would Greenify, as opposed to simply disable and what/how it benefits you?
I think I have over 70 apps disabled on my GS4 because they are things that I don't use.
2. Google Now - well this depends on if you use Google Now Everywhere, with it's ability to talk to the phone by saying "OK Google". In addition, Google Now has that card system which will send you news and other related cards based on what "you" the user configures. I'm not sure if you do setup all of these cards results in a great amount of battery drain either. I personally don't use Google Now voice activation or the cards, but I have not disabled the app.
I can agree with you that Google Now's voice system will drain the battery, but that's expected because it is always listening (if you enable that).
3. Location Services - by this you mean the GPS/Cell/WiFi location capabilities? I can tell you that I leave my GPS on GPS Only mode. I don't want my phone to use cell towers or WiFi to help improve upon the location of me. I have had no issues with doing this. I do believe if I use cell towers and WiFi to improve my location then the battery drain will be higher, but wouldn't that be dependent on if an app uses the location in the first place?
I mean, if I have my location set to highest accuracy and I leave my phone on over night, there should be no apps that would utilize the location services. Unless an app, for example Google Now decided to check where I am, I don't see the problem of leaving your location services set to high accuracy.
I personally use GPS only and I can confirm that no app triggers the location services during the day or night unless I open an app that requires it, for example Google Maps or a Weather app that I may be using the GPS to gather my location information. PS: I use AccuWeather and I have disabled use GPS for location and rather it uses my actual location based on my city and state.
4. Auto Brightness - although Samsung has one of the best auto brightness sensors for Android, there is much controversy (google it) that Android drains a lot of battery when using Auto brightness because it has to constantly use the light sensor to determine your screen's brightness.
When I got my GS4 I immediately disabled auto brightness and I manually control it, simply have 3 settings. I have 10% brightness for day time use, 100% for outdoor/car use, and 10% with screen filter set to 20% for bed use (late night and early morning). I will be doing the same with the GS6.
I can't speak entirely for auto brightness and whether it saves or consumes battery life, but from my research, people should just manually control it as opposed to using auto brightness, the exceptions are iPhones and Samsung phones.
Furthermore, during my testing, I ran a Geekbench 3 battery life test on my phone with the following conditions.
WiFi, GPS = On
Screen Brightness 10%
Bluetooth, Mobile Data, NFC = Off
Result = 2 hours and 55 minutes (screen on time)
Same test with screen brightness 100%, result = 2 hours and 45 minutes (screen on time).
This shows that in continuous use the real world difference in battery life between 10% and 100% brightness is only 10 minutes. Remember this is for the GS4. I am not sure how the GS6 will handle both extremes in terms of battery life for the screen brightness. My guess is that there will be little difference between using 10% and 100% in real world numbers like shown above.
5. Facebook and FB Messenger - you state don't use it but don't pose an alternative, let's be realistic a ton of people use it, by simply stating don't use it and not providing an alternative is somewhat pointless. My GS4 is rooted and I have been using BetterBatteryStats (BBS) for 2 years now and I can say for certain that FB does not drain the battery. However I can see that FB and Messenger do create a lot of Alarms, about 10 - 30 per hour. But when I look for Kernal or Partial wakelocks I see no correlation to battery drain.
I have even removed both apps from my phone and used my phone during a regular work week and I have found no real world difference in battery life.
However it is possible that FB and Messenger could have had a bug that caused battery drain, I have physically seen this issue with Viber and cross checked with BBS to confirm. But that was an old version of Viber, and since then Viber has been working fine.
I personally helped Jango Radio fix their battery drain issues. For example you open the app press the home key, then you will see that your phone will be awake for as long as the app is sitting in the background. I told the dev team to fix it and they did. I used BBS and watch the Partial wakelocks to confirm the issue.
Your final statement of using Gsam is fine, I've used it too, no battery life monitor is perfect, but at least they can help determine if there is a rogue app.
In terms of performance, I agree with doing 0.5x for all transitions, it does make a big difference. Less waiting for apps to close/minimize or open.
In terms of rooting and debloating with Titanium backup, that is something that rooted users can do.
I agree uninstalling system apps/pre-loaded apps will give you some space back.
Freezing an app versus disabling an app...well disabling should be good enough for people especially since you don't need root.
If you freeze/greenify apps versus simply disabling apps you don't need/use I'm sure the performance improvements would be identical, however I don't think there is much of an improvement regarding either methods.
A simple way to test this is to take a stock S6, run a benchmark, like Geekbench, and then root the S6 and freeze everything that is not needed and run Geekbench again. If there is no real numerical change in the benchmark, then I really doubt you will feel a real world difference in performance.
Let me know what you think.

Jesus, you've basically disabled your phone, why not just return it and go with a pre-paid flip phone? Listen I understand there's definitely a battery issue with the S6 but come on guys, just have a charger with you until this is addressed via an OTA update or something.
Using GSAM, how do I see Wakelocks and how do I see Deep Sleep?

"33. Battery-Add Battery charging ready reminder feature: User could set battery level under charging to receive the reminder."
seems they have given up on fixing the issue therefore just adding an alarm to recharge the battery... not good!
I saw the update but they deleted it on their download support page for now.

I am optimistic about the development department of Zenfone, atleast they are working deep enough about their flagship. The battery drainage is an issue for almost every Android L(5.0) user. I hope this issue will be fixed after we get update for 5.1.1 .
Asus is also expending their QA inspection team this will help for the end user to have stable releases afterwards.
Thumbs up Asus for the efforts.
I just received my phone this morning. it's a CN model. I charged it to 100%. Played a bit with it at work when I had the chance. I've spent the rest of the evening setting it up. The latest update is sitting waiting for download but I won't take it until tomorrow. I want to see how it goes overnight.
Even given the short time I've had it I'm pretty sure the battery stats are simply misreported and the poor battery life that some people are experiencing are down to individual setups or faulty devices. I've done nothing yet to conserve battery other than turning off the stupid ASUS battery saver, deleting some Chinese bloat and setting Wi-Fi to switch off when screen is off. From what I can see battery is comparable to my G2 which I was very happy with. As you can see from the screen shots it's pretty good.

so does this mean your device is running on CN firmware? so maybe the biggest culprit for battery drain in WW is google playstore and other gapps, because CN firmware didnt preinstalled with gapps..

Trust me. The battery life is aweful and is not just down to user error. I've used many, many android devices set up using similar parameters. Wether android 5.0 is to blame or something else, it is not my user error causing my excessive battery drain.

Um, what issue are you talking about and why are you jumping to conclusions? Don't jump to conclusions. You literally have no idea what ASUS' intent is and why would you complain when our phone has received an update every 2wks so far?

Um, even with Android OS battery usage at 21% and screen at 12%, according to batt stats screen, I still managed around 5.25hrs SoT.... With 32% battery left.
Granted this is just from last night to this morning and is mainly just Web browsing and playing some music (was up late couldn't sleep!). WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/autosync on.I've frozen/disabled most pre-installed apps and services.
Glad to see updates with Google Voice, I've had some issues with outgoing calls not using voice.
I am not jumping to conclusions... Merely stating the obvious statement made by Asus... Secondly.. I believe in Asus and their commitment to this device .. But building up another wakelock is not the way to go IMO..

Yes, that's why I'm running with CN for a while. I don't have to have google apps as system apps. Once I have a setup I'm happy with I'll back up and test it for a while with them moved to system to see if there is any difference. I'll then switch to WW and compare that. (I'll also pick up my google drive offer at that stage.)
It has lost about 3% overnight so it's heading for about 6 - 7 hours SOT. I'm guessing that that will drop to about 5 hours in normal use given other people's reports.
I've already ruled out the android OS in battery stats as causing any real drain. I've encountered this before with a previous device. All the manufacturer did was adjust the way battery stats was reported. There was no underlying bug to fix.
I'm taking things slowly and methodically with setup so if I do run into any real battery issues I should be able to easily identify the culprit(s).
I'll take the OTA some time in the next day or so and see how it compares. I'll feed back in this thread but I guess the WW update will be out by then.

Everything you have said is exactly what I said even down to the G2 similarities. I see no issue with battery in comparison to other android phones.
