The capability of changing my pixel density using LCD Density Changer was one of the last few questions i had before i jumped shipbto the shift. I figured that maybe others would have this question too.
I was able to change from a 240 to a 180 with no issues if i use the preview button while on temp root from VISIONary. I'm sure the other sizes will work well too!

Why would you want to change the pixel density to less dense? Are you having a hard time seeing the text on the screen?

Its the other way around. By decreasing the pixel density I am increasing the amount of screen real estate.
Its like changing your monitor resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768. You make everything smaller so you can fit more on the screen. I tend to do this and then use adw.launcher to set my app drawer to 5 columns and have more then 4 application shortcuts across my desktop screens.
For my evo 160 was a sweet spot but on the shift its 180. Any smaller and you would struggle reading text or taping the correct space on the screen.
I hope you're not using Sense with LCD density changer. It's useless without being able to adjust icon rows and such.

Your exactly right. I am using adw.launcher dreaming of the day when I can put cm7 on and do the same thing with out the sense apps.
One of the biggest advantages of our SGS2's is the big screen. However a DPI of 240 seems to be the only option which makes the phone look like a toy. If the DPI is changed programs like Phone, Camera and Calculator are not displayed properly. There is a solution for this. Read this thread to fix Phone and Calculator:

Just push the apk's to system/apk
To fix the Camera push the Camera.apk to system/apk
TOP!
I'm very thankfull.

DPI is just like the screen resolution you change in windows, the more the screen resolution the sharper the screen looks.
Similarly anything below 200 and less DPI in mobile makes things look smaller as if you have switched to a higher resolution.
Can you please attach a screen shots comparing default and the improved dpi?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
These images were taken in my galaxy i9003
You can see the visible difference between 240 dpi and 200 dpi
Particularly when the web browser isn't intelligent enough to deal with it properly.
EDIT: I'm leaving the original post as is, but adding that I discovered the differences between the 2012 and 2013 devices disappeared after the 2012 upgraded to Android 4.3. Web site fonts in chrome display the exact same size on both devices.
Below is a screen shot of the same page in Chrome on the 2012 Nexus 7 (left) and the 2013 Nexus 7 (right). (I'm a new user thus can't seem to post outside links, sorry. Please copy paste that to your browser. And someone please link to the picture?)
farm8.staticflickr.com/7351/9419672088_f5f14cc16e_b.jpg
The 2012 shows the font in a size that I can actually read. The 2013 shows a font so small the device is useless for me in portrait mode for this site. People are so excited about the new 7, but things like this affect usability for me a lot more than whether it's 20% faster. I also don't like the fact that the new 7 is longer and has sharper edges that feel more like they're stabbing you, but that's a separate topic.
I assume what is happening is that the device reports its resolution, and the web site uses it to determine the fame size. The 2013 nexus has 1200 pixels across so the site makes the frame nice and wide, which translates to tiny frigging characters. They may be nice and crisp, but they're still too damn small. This is NOT progress.
Is there any way to increase the font size in Chrome for pages like this? I mean without increasing the fonts on the whole device, and without pinching and zooming. I'm probably going to return my new 7 and buy a 2012 on discount if I can't figure out a way to make it do basic web surfing as well as it's predecessor.
Am I just missing something simple?
a quick solution would be downloading this great browser:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.boatbrowser.free
and going into Settings / Page Content Settings / Text scaling.
plus it would allow you to go full screen properly, have some control over text wrapping, use gestures, etc.
Chrome has Text Scaling settings as well (Settings / Accessibility) but i still prefer to use Boat.

Good screen shot comparison of the 2 devices.
There are a couple of things;
1) In the nexus "settings:display" I have already changed the system default Font size to "Huge". It seems to improve the size a bit on the forum website you showed.
also,
2) within the Chrome browser itself, you can go to the "Settings:"Accessibility" and increase the text scaling. This will definitely increase the font size.
Then change setting to your liking....

Thanks andrawer. For #1, I don't want everything big. Just certain web pages.
For #2. I overlooked this setting. Unfortunately it (and even #1) affects some fonts but not others. It produces a strange mix of multiple sized fonts. Hrmph.
Personally I like the smaller font and larger layout space as it lets me see the original spacing better.
I understand your point though.
It's as simple as changing font size.....no?

In theory, yes.
In reality, no.
Just depends on how sites are built. Some sites force a set font size which will look small on high res, other sites scale... Or have a dedicated mobile site, which is preferred.
Mobile sites shouldnt mean sized for a phone, but just touch oriented and better organized for the smaller res.

Right, I hear you. The problem I that not all sites are well designed. And for those sites a high Res screen is actually worst.
funny thing is that xda is one of those "not well designed" sites. I get all sorts of mixes in font size, and that's just between different posts.

I've already addressed why neither of those solve the problem.
If you're finding it to work well for you that's great. A lot of other people are too. But for me this is a deal breaker. I need to be able to comfortably view web sites that are important to me, and the 2012 does this just fine. For me the new model is a step backward in this regard.
Chrome see,s to handle the high resolutions poorly(first noticed on my Droid DNA). For example, if you look at Drudge Report on a 1080p+ mobile device, it looks all wonky on the left side. If you look at it using the AOSP Browser, my favorite, it looks just fine.
OP, have you tried an alternate browser?

Setting the DPI on the device to 480 doesn't seem to have any harmful affect to stock Motorola Apps (Active Display was the culprit before)..
Anyone else see anything at alternate DPI's?
How are you changing the DPI?
Wait... you have root? How are you changing it?
No root... Just Developers Mode turned on and USB Debugging available...
Then you can do:
Code:
adb shell wm density 480

Larger or smaller DPI alone does not determine how small or large everything is on the display. In fact, an accurate DPI setting is what allows Android to draw things the right size, regardless of the screen size and resolution.

You should read this: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html
BTW, what is the right size?
---------- Post added at 08:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 AM ----------
Edit N6 is also 560. The G3 really is an oddball.
480 is, in my opinion, a decent size. But it doesn't play nicely with SwiftKey. (if you're a SwiftKey user)

See figures 2 and 3 on the page you referenced. They demonstrate exactly how DPI allows Android to paint display elements the right size, or as they say "appropriate size". BTW...read it long ago.
FWIW actual pixels per inch for the Moto X Style is reported to be ~520 by GSMArena. Actual on the Nexus 6 is ~493, same QHD pixels over a larger area. In all cases, declared DPI should be something close to reality.

You are correct. The observed size is a function of PPI and DPI. Hold the PPI constant and reduce the DPI and the observed images are smaller, hold the DPI constant and reduce the PPI and the observed images increase in size? RIght, or do i have that backwards? I cant wrap my head around what is the "right size" or "appropriate size" or "close to reality". Whats the reference? For example is the home button on the X the "right size" or is the one on the N6 or G3?

Due to some of Android's inner workings, the DPI setting should ideally be a multiple of 160. That's not always realistic since it should also be close to the actual screen pixel density. As a compromise, a multiple of 40 is often used. The Moto X stock setting of 560 is at 3.5 * 160, so results in fairly clean scaling when necessary.
If you are using the smaller DPI to squeeze more onto the screen, 480 should be pretty good, with the next 2 stops being 440 and 400.
I tried 440 and updated the camera app the icons work properly now.

Big bump here, sorry for that. I keep changing my DPI and even when I set it back to the default (560) Swiftkey and the dialer app look awful. My pictures in the dialer app looked warped and awful, and SwiftKey is unusable. Any ideas how to fix this? I really want a DPI of 500 but I don't want those two apps looking funky. And even set to default they look funky now.
Another bump.
Has anyone got the pictures for contacts showing ok on any DPI other than stock?
For those not in the know, DPI setting can be changed on Android devices so that you can basically fit more on the screen. I must warn you that sometimes some apps might not show up in play store as your device is treated like a tablet (for example) - although I personally never had a problem resulting from this.
To change it you need to edit ro.sf.lcd_density=420 line in the build.prop file that is located in the system folder. As long as you can get to that file you can use any text editor to change the line
The default is 420, I changed it to 320 and you can see the results in the attached screes shot. Don't forget to restart the phone for changes to take effect.
Oh you live dangerously.
Mine is at 360 and it's the best for me .
For other people; you can also change it without having to root by using adb.
Holy crap do you guys have Superman vision? I'm in my 20's and I almost had to squint for the 420 density lol.
Mine is currently set to 480, the default for the G2 which has the same physical dimensions for the LCD.

I use 320 on my N5x as well. I accidentally set it to 220 since that was what I used on my N4 and I didn't realize the resolution was different. I would say 220 is at the bottom end of what I would consider to be usable. It basically fits what would normally be on a 8" tablet on a 5" phone.

Agreed. At 420dpi I have no desire to make it smaller.
I settled on 440 and changed font size to large. 480 made the status bar too big imo. Some of my older apps have too tiny text for my aging 40+ year old eyes :sly:
420pi seems to be pretty solid for me, I truly wouldn't want it any smaller or larger than what it is at.
I use Nova Launcher to set icon size to 145% and system settings to set font size to large. Looks just right to me. Out of the box both icons and font sizer were too small and uncomfortable. Years ago I was an iPhone user and I'm sure I still have some of the DNA, lol. I fill my homescreens with icons - hate wasted space.

Does the build.prop method make all apps behave properly? I tried using the adb method, but I had a few apps which didn't handle it properly (not the least of which was the Play store).
440. That matches roughly to the same estate as Galaxy S4 - just a tad bigger (as I expected when upgraded 5.0" to 5.2")
